Director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter David Koepp again deliver greatness with Black Bag, a crisp spy thriller and whodunit that will keep you guessing until the very end. Their second feature of the new year, after the creepy Presence, and third collaboration overall (including 2022's Kimi), boasts an all-star cast in a twisting odyssey of murder, betrayal, and lust. Black Bag skillfully avoids lame genre clichés by keeping the narrative taut and firmly grounded in realism. There are no overblown action scenes, silly gadgets, macho heroics, or slinky femme fatales here.
The opening scene introduces George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender), a senior British intelligence officer, at a roaring London nightclub. He clandestinely meets Meacham (Gustaf Skarsgård), a colleague assigned with a specific task. Meacham confirms that a top-secret program has indeed been stolen from the government. He hands George a list of five possible suspects with the clearance, aptitude, and opportunity to commit the crime.

Blumhouse is one of the biggest names in horror, and one of their four-year-old movies has found new streaming success. The production company now regularly releases anywhere between four and 12 movies a year, partnering with distributors like Warner Bros., Universal, Lionsgate, and Paramount, as well as streamers like Netflix, Prime Video, and Peacock. Though the stories, casts, and overall quality for Blumhouse movies vary from title to title, the films are generally made for less than $20 million, and they're generally horror or horror-adjacent.
2020 was a complicated year for Hollywood with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic causing global theatrical shutdowns, but several Blumhouse movies were still able to break through. The company's biggest success story of the year is, of course, Leigh Whannell's The Invisible Man, but Freaky and Fantasy Island were also hits. Other titles went straight to VOD, like You Should Have Left and The Craft: Legacy.

A year after premiering at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, Steven Soderbergh’s haunted house experiment “Presence” will finally hit theaters — on January 24, 2025. Neon scooped the movie out of the Park City lineup at the top of this year, now adding “Presence” to its growing roster of horror movies (and isn’t that the growing roster of any Hollywood company right now?) after “Longlegs” and “Immaculate” did strong business this year. In a most unusual twist on the haunted house movie, this film about a suburban family who discovers they are not alone in their new home is shot entirely from the perspective of the ghost. Watch the full trailer for “Presence” below.

Blumhouse Productions is an American film and television production company most well-known for its releases in the horror genre. While the production company doesn't dabble much outside the genre, it ping-pongs between different horror sub-genres. Slashers, the paranormal, and even killer robots are fair game by Blumhouse's standards. As such, they have produced many experimental films of varying quality.

However, most fans don’t know that back in 2009 the Footloose actor was struggling with one film. Bacon was given the opportunity to portray the role of a real-life U.S. Marine, Lt. Col Michael Strobl for the television movie Taking Chance. What he didn’t anticipate was how tough it was for him to play the critical role.

Steven Soderbergh built his reputation in part on his “one for them, one for me” mentality, alternating between making high-profile studio projects and offbeat, and often lo-fi, experiments. At first glance, his latest effort, Presence, a haunted house story staged exclusively through the Pov of a ghost, would appear to fall firmly in the latter camp. But while the out-there concept invites a host of tantalizing possibilities, the film’s adherence to conventional and uninspired plotting sees Presence fall into a blasé middle ground.
Opening in an empty suburban house, Presence establishes the viewpoint of its central apparition with a sequence where Soderbergh’s camera roams feverishly through the different rooms and up and down the stairs. Then, a real estate agent (Julia Fox) enters the picture, accompanied by some prospective buyers, a well-to-do married couple, Rebekah (Lucy Liu) and Chris (Chris Sullivan), and their two teenage children, Tyler (Eddy Maday...

Zach Cregger's film "Barbarian" cause a minor stir when it was released in 2022. Made for a downright modest budget of $4.5 million, the film raked in $45 million at the box office, grabbing the attention of many enthused fright fans seeking new voices in the pop horror zeitgeist.
"Barbarian" was also one of many films in the emerging microgenre of Airbnb-related horror -- Fearbnb? -- wherein the protagonists check into a bed-and-breakfast, only to find something eerie or menacing about the house they've paid for. The genre also included films like "The Rental," "Superhost," "You Should Have Left," and "Room for Rent." Fearbnb movies were timely, tapping into the public's uneasiness with a total lack of regulation in the upstart self-rental business; if no one is overseeing your Airbnb, who is to say the homeowner isn't keeping a monster in their basement?

In horror, we often talk about the final girl, the trope of that virginal teenager who is paying attention to her surroundings while all of her friends are distracted having sex and doing drugs. She's usually timid, but in the third act, she summons the strength to take down her attacker. We don't talk about final boys as often. That's mostly because there haven't been as many. When you look at the heyday of '80s slashers and horror, the three iterations of Tommy Jarvis in the Friday the 13th franchise, or Bruce Campbell's Ash in the Evil Dead movies are the major final "boys" that come to mind for most. We see more of them now, though not boys but men, and not a character, but actors who have made a career out of being called scream kings. Ethan Hawke is one thanks to Sinister, The Purge, and The Black Phone.

During a roundtable interview at this year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where star Daniel Brühl is being feted with the Kviff President’s Award, the actor-director-producer recalled the “very bittersweet memories” of his directorial debut, the dark German comedy “Next Door,” being chosen for competition at the 71st Berlin International Film Festival, only for the festival to be held virtually that year. Three years later, as part of Kviff’s celebration of Brühl’s career, “Next Door” is set to screen at the Grand Hall, the festival’s premiere venue, with a proper in-person audience.

Kevin Bacon praises Eddie Murphy as an actor in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and in general. Both Murphy and Bacon enjoyed their collaboration, with Murphy calling Bacon the "perfect villain." Murphy is considering a remake of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, potentially reuniting Bacon and Murphy in a new project.
Kevin Bacon speaks on finally getting the chance to work with Eddie Murphy for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Kevin Bacon has been in a good number of horror films over the decades, and he has admitted that he’s drawn to working in the genre because he’s a horror fan himself. Now it has been revealed that he and his wife Kyra Sedgwick are such big fans of the genre that they’re planning to co-direct and star in a horror film – and they’ve cast their daughter Sosie Bacon, who starred in the horror hit Smile, as a co-star!
Variety caught up with Sedgwick to interview her about her role in the Off Broadway play All of Me, and along the way they mentioned that she’s currently developing “a horror film she would star in with Bacon and their adult daughter, Sosie. The couple wants to co-direct the film, though the Directors Guild has other ideas.“
Sedgwick told them, “It’s very hard to get dual directing credit.

After 1999's Stir of Echoes, director David Koepp and actor Kevin Bacon teamed up again in 2020 to recreate a psychological horror novella, You Should Have Left. While the film's execution dulls the film down to a B grade, offering slightly eerie chills rather than haunting us, the premise is undeniably strong and intriguing. Bacon steps into the role of Theo, a wealthy man who is navigating his insecurities about being in an age-gap relationship while also tackling the guilt he feels over his past. He is eventually forced to confront the sins of his past through an enduring horror staple, the haunted house. However, as the supernatural aspect of the film is heightened, the house essentially turns into Theo's own psyche, offering an interesting take on the haunted house trope.

You Should Have Left delves into marital issues and guilt, with a unique take on a haunted house ending. Kevin Bacon's character's decision to stay behind symbolizes atonement for past sins in the film. The house in the movie represents a purgatory for sinners haunted by their past actions.
Blumhouse Productions' lesser-known offering of supernatural horror, You Should Have Left, plays with the haunted house sub-genre and places a modern twist on an ending packed with hidden meaning about marital and domestic issues. Starring Kevin Bacon as Theo Conroy and Amanda Seyfried as his wife, Susanna, You Should Have Left is a slow-burn thriller with deeper meaning about the larger ramifications of sin, marital strife, and guilt. Written and directed by David Koepp, You Should Have Left was based on the 2017 novella of the same name by author Daniel Kehlmann.

Jennifer Nettles, lead vocalist of the country duo Sugarland and a successful solo artist, got into acting by playing Dolly Parton’s mother in the 2015 TV movie Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors. Since then she has appeared in the sequel to that movie, Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love, performed in Chicago and Waitress on Broadway, had roles in the film Harriet and the TV series Underground, and appeared on multiple episodes of the HBO show The Righteous Gemstones… which happens to be executive produced by David Gordon Green, so that paved the way for her to have a role in Green’s most recent film, The Exorcist: Believer. Now Deadline reports that Nettles is following her Exorcist role by being cast in another genre project: the horror action series The Bondsman!

In a world where superheroes, sequels, horror (thankfully) and anything IP related are king, it seems as though the risqué original thriller has gone by the wayside. Over the past ten years or so you’d be hard pressed to find anything other than The Invisible Man, You Should Have Left, Gerald’s Game, Gone Girl, or Knock, Knock that really fit the mold (albeit with some finagling) and each of those is either tied to popular literature or skews closer to the horror genre.
But the original thriller thrived in the 1990s. Also thriving during this beautiful time in Hollywood were action movies featuring two adversaries face to face on the poster and/or movie cover. Movies like Face/Off, Point Break, Demolition Man, Universal Soldier, and Broken Arrow. 1992’s Unlawful Entry combines both of these elements with two heaping sides of the stalker and slasher horror subgenres. One of Kevin Bacon’s earliest roles came in the 1980 slasher classic Friday the 13th, and he has enjoyed returning to the horror genre now and then ever since. A few years ago, he teamed up with Blumhouse Television to try to get a television series follow-up to the creature feature Tremors going at Syfy. That didn’t work out, but now Bacon and Blumhouse Television are joining forces again for a horror action series called The Bondsman!
Deadline reports that The Bondsman is set up at Amazon’s Prime Video. Bacon will be taking on the role of Hub Halloran, a backwoods bounty hunter who comes back from the dead with an unexpected second chance at life, and love, and a nearly-forgotten musical career — only to find that his old job now has a demonic new twist.
The first season of the series is expected to consist of eight half-hour episodes.

The massive revamp of the Dcu franchise, which is being orchestrated by acclaimed director James Gunn, is a huge move in one of the most lucrative niches of the film industry that's undoubtedly being closely watched by fans, be it those of the comics and/or those who liked at least some of the previous cinematic adaptations. The person whose perhaps most aware of the near-astronomical expectations of what's to come is of course Gunn himself. In a report from The Direct, the director recently sat down with the Inside of You podcast for an interview about the road ahead with the Dcu, and how he expected backlash from the moment of the first announcement.

Despite having his own history with the genre, The Blair Witch Project even terrified Kevin Bacon, says Smile actor and daughter Sosie Bacon. The elder Bacon actor rose to stardom with his role in the original Friday the 13th as one of Mrs. Voorhees before going on to appear in the horror genre a variety of times the following couple of decades, including Joel Schumacher's Flatliners, Ron Underwood's Tremors and David Koepp's Stir of Echoes. The past few years have seen Bacon back in the horror field with the likes of You Should Have Left and They/Them.

While practically every other filmmaker seems to be pretending that the pandemic never happened, setting their films either before the plague or so far afterward that nobody talks about it anymore, Steven Soderbergh is out there mining the, shall we say, unique circumstances of the last few years for Hitchcockian thrills in “Kimi.”
It’s a low-budget, high-concept thriller that’s refreshingly contemporary on the surface, even though it’s pretty conventional at its core.
Zoë Kravitz stars as Angela Childs, who works for a tech company selling an Alexa-like device called “Kimi.” It works basically the same way all the real voice-activated technology you use does, except whenever it fails to understand a voice command, an actual human being listens to the recording to determine where the mistake was made, and correct Kimi’s programming to prevent future borks.
And if that sounds like a really terrible idea, if...

The Gerad Butler-fronted disaster movie Greenland will now be released via premium video-on-demand in the U.S. this December, skipping theaters entirely. Originally scheduled to be theatrically released on June 12, 2020, Greenland faced several delays and release date push backs and is now scheduled to hit PVOD on December 18, priced at $19.99 for a 48-hour rental.

Having broken through off Broadway with Sean Penn and Val Kilmer, it’s no surprise that the actor has spent 35 years striving to put being a teen idol behind him. ‘I’m drawn to dark things,’ he says
Alarm bells would ring for most couples if one partner suggested marriage as the perfect subject for a horror movie. Kevin Bacon does not seem perturbed, though, that his latest film, You Should Have Left, was inspired by just such an idea that his wife, the actor Kyra Sedgwick, came up with.
“I’m drawn to dark things,” he says down the phone from their farm in Connecticut. “On some level, it’s therapeutic. Even though it once seemed like a borderline impossibility, Happy Death Day 3 now has new life. Producer Jason Blum has revealed that he has every intention to make the planned third movie in the time-bending slasher trilogy.
