Detained

Detained review – Abbie Cornish is best thing in twisty noir that flirts with ridiculousness
Abbie Cornish at an event for 7 Psychopathes (2012)
Cornish intrigues in an implausible thriller about a woman who wakes up in a police station with no memory of how she got there

When Rebecca (Abbie Cornish) wakes up handcuffed in a police interview room with no memory of how she got there, something feels off. The officers grilling her about a hit and run seem legit at first: a detective (Moon Bloodgood) with a hard, mean stare is classic bad cop, assisted by a genial sidekick (Laz Alonso) who walks in with doughnuts. But the precinct is grotty even by police standards. What’s wrong with the place? You don’t have to wait long to find out. Just 12 minutes in, this overheated psychological thriller noir delivers an almighty plot twist. Like the movie, it’s more ridiculous than interesting.

Despite its B or even C-movie approach, Detained is given a bit of weight by an intriguing performance by Cornish.

Every Star Trek Episode Directed By Michael Dorn Ranked, Worst To Best
Image
Best known for playing Lt. Commander Worf in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, actor Michael Dorn also directed four episodes of Star Trek. Dorn is one of many Star Trek: DS9 actors who became directors. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Avery Brooks (Captain Benjamin Sisko) and Rene Auberjonois (Constable Odo) each directed nine episodes of DS9. Tng's LeVar Burton (Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge), and Star Trek: Voyager's Robert Duncan McNeill (Lt. Tom Paris) and Roxann Dawson (Lt. B'Elanna Torres) have all become successful television directors.

Many Star Trek actors, including Dorn, got their chance to direct episodes because Star Trek producer Rick Berman's "Director's School" let interested actors from 1990s Star Trek shows get hands-on experience as directors. The Star Trek Director's School was inspired by Dorn's Star Trek: The Next Generation cast mate Jonathan Frakes (Commander William Riker), who...

George Takei Has A Surprising Link To Star Trek: Enterprise
Image
George Takei's childhood experiences in Japanese American internment camps influenced an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise called "Detained." The episode "Detained" addressed the issue of prejudice and drew a direct comparison to how Japanese Americans were forcibly relocated during World War 2. George Takei's role as Sulu in Star Trek allowed him to raise awareness of the internment camps and advocate for equal rights, reflecting his own personal experiences.

Star Trek: The Original Series' Sulu actor George Takei has a surprising link to Star Trek: Enterprise and not in the way that viewers may think. The Scott Bakula-led Enterprise was a prequel to Star Trek: Tos, depicting the early days of Starfleet and the formation of the United Federation of Planets. Although the adventures of Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) and the crew of the Enterprise Nx-01 took place a century before the Star Trek: The Original Series characters began their five-year mission,...
