Theatergoers got up close and personal with Evan Rachel Wood during recent surprise appearances in Sleep No More.
The Golden Globe–nominated actress, 32, shocked attendees at the interactive, immersive live experience during two New York performances in December. Wood, who currently can be heard lending her voice to Disney’s Frozen 2, played the role of the Nurse during the show.
Held at the McKittrick Hotel in New York City, Sleep No More is a unique show that takes guests on a choose-your-own-adventure style narrative beyond a single stage, instead roaming throughout the space.

Like Baz Luhrmann’s groundbreaking 2001 romantic-tragedy movie before it, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a poptastic spectacle with a grab bag of famous pop songs.
For the stage production, music supervisor, arranger, and orchestrator Justin Levine expanded its sonic landscape, using more than 70 pop songs (credited to 161 writers) in the construction of the score, which includes Karen Olivo singing Katy Perry’s “Firework” and Aaron Tveit singing “Roxanne,” by the Police.

U2’s Joshua Tree 2019 tour touched down at Seoul, South Korea’s Gocheok Sky Dome on December 8th. It was the group’s first concert in South Korea, and it happened to also be the anniversary of John Lennon’s death. Early in the show, Bono paused “Pride (In the Name of Love)” to pay tribute to Lennon.
“Let’s turn this concrete sky arena into a cathedral,” Bono said. “We think about a great peacemaker we lost December 8th, 39 years ago tonight: John Lennon. We lost John Lennon, great peacemaker,...

Director May el-Toukhy tackles a subject that has not yet been explored and is frightening in the possibilities it reveals to us as women assume positions of power and authority. The troublesome specter of exploitive female sexuality is also elaborated upon in the Dutch Oscar submission, ‘Instinct’.
Two highly developed Western European nations, Denmark and The Netherlands, take female sexuality to extremes here in ways we only saw before as men’s terrain with such films as Last Tango in Paris or In the Realm of the Senses.
My initial reaction to both films was a sort of shame, as if somewhere deep inside of me, I understood the impulse that impelled both these women to venture into forbidden zones of action, but wished it had not depicted it so graphically. It would take a psychiatrist to explain the impulse in human nature that makes us enter dangerous sexual territories.

The Grammys took a fairly expansive sweep with this morning’s nominations for Best Musical Theater Album, The Motown sound, Rodgers & Hammerstein, the folk-rock music of Anaïs Mitchell, the reworked radio hits of Moulin Rouge! and Imogen Heap’s Harry Potter musical suites were all represented.
But four of the five nominations did not include composers, since the music was not original to the cast albums. In the case of several, the musical numbers consist largely of oldies, some reworked for contemporary settings. Anaïs Mitchell’s previous concept album for Hadestown was already Grammy-nominated upon its release in 2010.
The nominees:
Ain’t Too Proud: The Life And Times Of The Temptations is a rousing recreation of the Motown sound, focusing largely, but not exclusively, on the title group’s hits. Nominated were original cast members Saint Aubyn, Derrick Baskin, James Harkness, Jawan M. Jackson, Jeremy Pope and Ephraim Sykes and...

“Yesterday” director Danny Boyle asked composer Daniel Pemberton to help actor Himesh Patel become comfortable with the Beatles material he’d be performing. Pemberton hesitated until Boyle promised the job would only last three or four weeks.
So Pemberton said yes, and was on the film for a year and a half.
In the film, Patel plays Jack Malik, a struggling singer who is about to give up on his career when an unexplained phenomenon erases all memory of the Beatles from the entire world — except, amazingly, for him. He starts playing Beatles songs that nobody else knows and is acclaimed as a songwriting genius.
Pemberton recruited a singer-songwriter friend, music supervisor Adem Ilhan, and together they turned the “EastEnders” actor into a credible musical performer who (in the romantic-comedy script by “Love Actually” writer Richard Curtis) turns his memories of Beatles songs into a meteoric rise to pop stardom.

Yesterday from Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) and Oscar-nominated screenwriter Richard Curtis hits theaters on June 28th. The film stars Himesh Patel, Lily James, Kate McKinnon, and Ed Sheeran in a rock-n-roll comedy.
On Abbey Road, the Beatle’s last recorded album, Paul McCartney wrote this lyric for the song, The End, “And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.” Although the song doesn’t appear in the film, Yesterday, it really sums up the spirit and message of this funny, heart-warming movie. I truly enjoyed the experience of watching this movie and laughed, cried, sighed and sang along as the story unfolded.
Yesterday tells the story of Jack Malik. Yesterday, everyone knew the Beatles. Today only Jack remembers their songs. That, in fact, is the unique starting point for the film. After a mysterious accident, Jack wakes up to discover...

If not for an endearing cast and some occasional splashes of Richard Curtis’ signature British charm, “Yesterday” would be a complete waste of its clever premise — not to mention the money it must have cost to license 17 of the Beatles’ most famous songs. As it stands, this sweet but vacuous exercise in suspending disbelief is an overstuffed and underwritten misfire; a studio-engineered crowd-pleaser so convinced “All You Need Is Love” that it loses sight of some other essentials along the way: Believable characters, elegant pacing, a script that develops an actual heart instead of just nodding its head to a steady drumbeat of Hallmark emotions. For a movie that manages to inspire a funny and self-effacing performance from Ed Sheeran, “Yesterday” gets tripped up on the basics.
The premise, dreamed up by one-time “The Simpsons” writer Jack Barth, is ingenious for how specifically it taps into a fantasy that should...

Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen are rom-com experts!
The two, who are currently starring in their own rom-com, Long Shot, stopped by The Late Late Show with James Corden on Thursday night to attempt an impossible feat: with the help of host James Corden, Theron and Rogen acted out 20 rom-coms in the span of 12 minutes!
The skit started out with brief recaps of You’ve Got Mail, Maid in Manhattan and Jerry Maguire, before Corden, 40, got into character to play the rom-com king Hugh Grant in three movies in a row: Notting Hill, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Bridget Jones’ Diary.

"You are the world's greatest singer/songwriter!" Universal has finally unveiled the first official trailer for the new movie directed by Danny Boyle, officially titled Yesterday - formerly known as All You Need Is Love. From writer Richard Curtis, the original concept for this movie is crazy - one day everyone wakes up and the entire world has never heard of The Beatles. Except for one guy. Who becomes famous for singing/playing all the classic Beatles songs, because no one knows that it isn't him who came up with all of this genius work. As wild as that seems, only Danny Boyle could pull that off and he seems to have done that. Himesh Patel (from "EastEnders" and "Damned") stars in Yesterday, along with Lily James, Kate McKinnon, Ed Sheeran, Ana de Armas, Joel Fry, and Camille Chen. This looks as amusing and enjoyable as I hoped, and I can't wait to see it.

Despite the looming specter of Brexit, the UK production business continues to drive strong numbers — even if preliminary statistics released by the BFI today do not all constitute new records. Film and high-end TV production spend combined exceeded £3.1B ($4B) in 2018. Television saw the bigger increases, repping £1.173B ($1.53B) of the total for a 4% hike on 2017 and the highest level since the tax credit was introduced in 2013. Film production spend was £1.924B ($2.51B), the 2nd best score on record. The figures were released today as part of the BFI’s annual statistics report which also covers box office.
Inward investment, with the U.S. a key producing partner for the UK, was £795M on high-end TV and £1.628B on features. Significantly, three of the top box office draws locally in 2018 were made in Britain: Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War (£70.8M), Universal’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (£65.5M...

50 years after The Beatles' White Album was released, "Happiness is a Warm Gun" remains progressive musically and politically.
It is difficult now to hear The Beatles' song "Happiness is a Warm Gun" without feeling the subliminal twinge of pain associated with John Lennon's death. Along with the "shoot me" taunts spoken over the introduction of Abbey Road's "Come Together," the anti-gun satire teases strings of predictive allusion. But Lennon wrote the song to bring out a warm and cozy feeling. And no, it wasn't the first rush of bliss that happens when heroin hits the veins. It was from a book by Peanuts cartoonist Charles M. Schulz which had a panel reading "Happiness is a Warm Puppy." The intent and the delivery weren't too far off from what Lennon was pushing with "All You Need Is Love," and as far as the Beatles were concerned,...

Todd Rundgren had a loving history with the band that taught him almost everything he knew about music.
Rock Hall of Fame Class of 2019 nominee Todd Rundgren is a musicians' musician who consistently puts art in front of fame. A True Star, which is also the title of his 1973 album, he broke onto the scene with two romantic pop classics, "Hello, It's Me" and "I Saw the Light" off his third album Something/Anything?; explored the intricate maneuverings of prog rock with his band Utopia, and scored one of his most and least recognizable songs just banging on a drum all day. Rundgren never shied from referencing his musical influences, or ripping down his own idols. Ten years after The Beatles proclaimed "All You Need Is Love," Rundgren confirmed the message when Utopia's Oops! Wrong Planet closed with "Love Is the Answer." But not all Todd's encounters with the Beatles were loving.

Skip The Beatles' "Revolution 9" at your peril. It's music, not noise.
Turn me on dead man.
Long before conspiracy-minded rock fans screwed up their needles playing records backwards, to paraphrase George Carlin, The Beatles’ “Revolution 9” was a spooky experimental tour de force of hidden meaning. Marketed as one of the first boy bands, the mop topped sensations were best known for being at the toppermost of the pops. The ultimate pop band was also at the forefront of the rising underground scene.
While The Beatles are best known for writing love songs, not only catchy romantic ditties, but songs about the larger concept of love, they had a very dark side to their output that defied easy categories. John Lennon could be particularly scary. He forced George Harrison to arrange a guitar solo that had to sound better backwards on “I’m only Sleeping,” and shoveled...
