If you want to know the true meaning of love, find someone that looks at you the way Mamoudou Athie looks at a chair in Amanda Kramer’s surreal, stylish and militantly absurd comedy-drama By Design. Both specific in its intent and mischievously opaque in its execution, this willfully strange art project can switch from flip to serious in the blink of an eye, using a terrific cast to weave a trance-like state of oddness that somehow sustains to the finishing line. In Sundance terms, it fills a slot left open by Miranda July, America’s poet laureate of urban dysfunction, presumed missing in action since 2020’s Kajillionaire.
Like July, Kramer is concerned not so much with human beings as the space between them, opening on three women—Camille (Juliette Lewis), Lisa (Samantha Mathis) and Irene (Robin Tunney)—as they meet for their weekly lunch. Like an adult version of the Heathers of Heathers,...

Miranda July has not announced another feature since she directed 2020’s “Kajillionaire.” But that should hardly be a surprise from the offbeat filmmaker whose previous movie, “The Future,” came out a decade prior. The Los Angeles-based artist fills in her time with visual and performance art as well as writing novels and short stories. Her novels tend to be about middle-aged women changing the course of their lives, as was the case with 2015’s sexually adventurous “The First Bad Man” and now next year’s “All Fours,” which July explains in the Art21 clip below is about “the second half of a woman’s life. And it’s also a romance.”
July shares an update on “All Fours” in this excerpt from “Friends and Strangers,” the third and final episode of Season 11 of Art21’s “Art in the Twenty-First Century,” broadcasting on PBS October 20.

Emile Mosseri is slated to score the new Amazon original series “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” created by Donald Glover, Hiro Murai and Francesca Sloane. Mosseri served as a composer of films such as “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” “Homecoming,” “When You Finish Saving the World,” and “Minari,” which was nominated for best original score at the Academy Awards in 2021. He was also nominated for a Grammy in the best arrangement, instrumental or a cappella category for the song “Infinite Love” from Miranda July’s “Kajillionaire.”

When filmmaker-actor-writer Miranda July was approached about narrating the documentary Fire of Love, she didn’t see herself as an obvious choice.
“I was like, I don’t know,” she recalls, “I’m not like a narrator per se.”
Then there was the subject matter of the film – which has gone on to earn an Oscar nomination – the story of French couple Katia and Maurice Krafft, who gave their lives to the study of volcanology.
“What do I know about volcanoes? Nothing,” July tells Deadline. But then the film took hold of her. “I watched this sort of early version, I guess an early cut. And I was so shocked that at the end I was really emotional, as if volcanoes were my thing. And I realized, oh, it’s just this devotion that I relate to. That just kind of punched me in the chest or something.”

It’s time to get the hot cocoa boiling and the holiday decorations up! It’s almost December and nearly every streaming service has consumers covered with both seasonal content and new shows to carry them into the new year. Amazon’s Prime Video service has a few new series debuting, including “Riches.” Starring Deborah Ayorinde, from “Them,” the series is described as “a high-stakes family drama about the exploits of the stylish, privileged, and super-successful Richards siblings vying for control over the family business.”
The streamer also brings actor John Krasinski back into the world of Tom Clancy with the third season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.” This installment finds CIA officer Jack Ryan wrongly accused of treason and on the run from his own government as he races against the clock to stop a global catastrophe. The only thing better than Michael Giacchino's film and TV scores might be his title tracks. At a certain point in his career, the ultra-busy composer decided he was done giving his musical themes standard (read: boring) names like "[Name of Character]'s Suite" or those describing the scene they accompany in plain terms. This, in turn, is how we ended up with such golden dad joke track titles as "Suite, Suite Dino Revenge" from the "Jurassic World Dominion" soundtrack or "Foster? I Barely Know Her!" from "Thor: Love and Thunder" (to cite two recent examples), and the world is a much improved place for it.
Even in the case of Matt Reeves' Very Serious comic book film "The Batman," Giacchino filled his soundtrack with pun-y track titles like "Collar ID" and "Are You a Kenzie or a Can't-zie?" Naturally, he and his musical collaborators used Catwoman's presence in the movie as...

Two lovers, countless volcanoes, and hundreds of hours of footage: “Fire of Love” has an engulfing heat that viewers, much like the documentary’s subjects Maurice and Katia Krafft, can’t help but run toward.
As IndieWire can exclusively announce, National Geographic Documentary Films and Neon will debut the Sundance award-winning documentary “Fire of Love” in theaters July 6. Directed by Sara Dosa (“The Seer and the Unseen”) and narrated by filmmaker Miranda July (“Kajillionaire”), “Fire of Love” centers on married couple Maurice and Katia Krafft who, after meeting on a blind date, share a fascination with explosive volcanoes. IndieWire also shares the exclusive trailer below.

Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B has boarded Beetlejuice 2, Deadline has confirmed, bringing a new sense of life to a project that has long been in the works at Warner Bros.
The sequel remains in early development, with the script yet to be written. No other attachments have been disclosed at this time.
Beetlejuice is a classic film from director Tim Burton in which the spirits of a deceased couple are harassed by an unbearable family that has moved into their home, hiring a malicious spirit of the same name to drive them out. Michael Keaton played the title role in the original, with Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Catherine O’Hara, Winona Ryder and more rounding out the cast.
The film that Warren Skaaren adapted from a story by Michael McDowell and Larry Wilson grossed nearly $75M worldwide upon its 1988 Warner Bros release and won an Oscar in 1989 for Best Makeup,...

National Geographic Documentary Films has won out in a fierce bidding war for the rights to “Fire of Love,” a documentary and love story about two French scientists who died tracking the volcanoes that were their greatest passion. It’s the first big pact of this year’s virtual Sundance, a festival that has been rather slow-going in terms of dealmaking.
Netflix, Amazon, Sony Pictures Classics, Paramount and several other players were in the hunt for the film at various points. Financial terms of the deal, which was for worldwide rights, were not publicly disclosed but it is in the mid seven-figure range, according to knowledgable insiders. Reviewers flipped for the film, which drove up its price, with Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman hailing it as “moving and amazing” and “a spellbinding experience.”
“Fire of Love” is directed by Sara Dosa (“The Seer and the Unseen”) and narrated by “Kajillionaire” filmmaker Miranda July.

Surprises dotted the visual media categories at Tuesday morning’s Grammy Awards nomination announcements, with television dominating the original-score category but new movies ruling the compilation-soundtrack list.
As expected, H.E.R. was nominated for best song written for visual media for “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah,” which won the Oscar earlier this year. Her fellow Oscar nominee, Leslie Odom Jr.’s “Speak Now” from “One Night in Miami,” was also nominated.
H.E.R. and her fellow “Fight for You” songwriters Dernst Emile II (aka D’Mile) and Tiara Thomas also notched a song of the year nomination, and H.E.R. earned a nod in the traditional R&b performance category for that song.
Three of the six song nominees were from television projects: the Emmy-winning “Agatha All Along” from “WandaVision,” “All Eyes on Me” from “Inside Bo Burnham” and “All I Know So Far” from the Pink documentary by that title.

Debra Winger earned her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress with her performance in “An Officer and a Gentleman,” but she revealed in a new interview with The Telegraph that some people on set were dissatisfied with her work because she looked “puffy in the dailies.” Someone involved with the production came to her on set with water retention pills to help her lose some weight so she would be skinnier in the film, which cast her as Richard Gere’s love interest.
“I was so young I didn’t even know what it was, and I just handed it back and said ‘I’m not taking that,’” Debra said. “It just sounded ridiculous to me. But somebody else could have really succumbed.”
When asked where the confidence to reject Hollywood marching orders came from, Winger responded, “I certainly wasn’t taught that by my mother. I didn’t have great men around me,...

TV had the run of the place for awhile there during the pandemic. But now that vaccinations are speeding up and the weather is warming, it’s film’s time to shine. At least that’s the conclusion that can be drawn from HBO Max’s list of new releases for June 2021.
There are no real original TV series of note coming this month, which is highly unusual for HBO and HBO Max. In their place, however, are some really impressive film offerings. Major Warner Bros. titles like The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (June 4) and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights (June 11) both arrive this month. So too do some interesting documentaries like Revolutionary Rent on June 15 and Lfg on June 24. The former deals with the staging of the musical Rent in Cuba and the latter follows the U.S. women’s soccer team’s fight for equal pay.

Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” garnered six Oscar nominations, five of which were in top categories like acting, writing, directing and Best Picture. The film’s sole technical nod went to 35-year-old composer Emile Mosseri for his beautifully offbeat musical score (some of it featuring his own humming voice), which cushions the story’s emotional arc.
Mosseri, who makes his home in Glendale, California, and lived for eight years in Bushwick, Brooklyn, has made a big impression on the indie-film music scene in just the last couple years with scores for art-house hits like “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” and “Kajillionaire.” He is also a bassist in the rock band The Dig.
During a conversation with TheWrap, Mosseri spoke about the tricky line between sweet and saccharine in music, and of the particular Tim Burton film (with a score by Danny Elfman) that first sparked his obsession with movie melodies.

As we wait for Oscar nominations to drop next Monday, movie lovers find themselves reflecting back on a fantastic year for cinema (if little else). And regardless of your end-of-year rankings, everyone should agree that 2020 was a particularly strong year for movie music. The Academy Award for Best Original Score is going to be a highly competitive category, with compelling compositions in a variety of genres competing for only five slots. It is a testament to the fact that today’s top composers possess highly original voices comparable to the best directors, and elite musicians working in the television space created long-form scores that were every bit as powerful.

Nearly a year after closing its physical location, New York City’s IFC Center is preparing to finally reopen on Friday, March 5. The theater has announced a range of new safety measures along with new releases and several screening series. The arthouse venue first shut its doors on March 13, 2020 as early lockdown measures called for the closure of a variety of cultural institutions. In late February, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that New York City movie theaters had permission to reopen at 25 percent capacity and with a maximum of 50 people allowed per screen. Other areas of the state reopened months ago.
While the state has enacted a number of guidelines for reopening theaters, IFC Center has added additional safety measures, including mandatory mask-wearing at all times, no concession sales, and no eating and drinking allowed in theaters. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.
The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.
This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

While the Best Supporting Actress Oscar is often awarded to an ingenue, it can also be a way to reward a more season performer who has been overlooked by the academy in the past. Indeed, that is just what happened at the 2020 Academy Awards when Laura Dern took home this Oscar for her scene-stealing performance in “Marriage Story.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscars predictions for Best Supporting Actress.)
While Dern was clearly a featured player in her picture, two of her rival nominees, Florence Pugh and Margot Robbie, could easily have submitted themselves in lead for their roles in “Little Women” and “Bombshell” respectively. But the studios decided to campaign only their co-stars, Saoirse Ronan and Charlize Theron, in the top race and this proved to be a winning strategy as all four reaped bids.

As with leading men, the winner of Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars is usually one of the more seasoned competitors. Last year, Brad Pitt was 56 when he won for his featured performance in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” He joined a lucky 13 previous winners who were in their 50s when they took home the trophy. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscars predictions for Best Supporting Actor.)
Eleven more men were in their 60s when they won Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards. For eight fellows, it took till they were in their 70s to win while two (George Burns for “The Sunshine Boys” and Christopher Plummer for “Beginners”) were north of 80 when they took home their only Oscars.
At the 2019 Academy Awards, Mahershala Ali prevailed for “Green Book.” He had won this same category just two years earlier for “Moonlight.” He was the 31st (and 29th...

A Guide to Avoiding #OscarsSoWhite: Instructions for Academy Voters Before Filling Out Their Ballots
⊗ Film is supposed to be inclusive. But if you can’t see yourself on-screen, do you feel as if you even exist? One-third of our lives is spent at work, and the artists who express their creativity through cinema deserve to have their work seen, and not just because of the color of their skin or their gender but because when you are exposed to an experience different from your own, your creativity grows. Take a moment to review this list of eligible films, putting a check mark on the ones you have seen from this year. Ideally, that will leave you with a clearer picture of how you are contributing to cinema’s evolution with your votes.
Your goal should be to watch all of these films, but let’s be realistic. Try seeing at least 60% of them. All meet the Academy’s diversity requirements — in front of or...

Over the course of last year, I found myself consumed by the work of Paul Thomas Anderson. Early in the year, The Master, became my favorite film. Later, I did a rewatch of all of his films. I was a voracious consumer of Paul Thomas Anderson content. On my travels, I came across “Punch-Drunk Love: A Delegate Speaks,” a rather incredible essay written by Miranda July for the Criterion Collection copy of Anderson’s 2002 film. Not only was it extremely funny, but it brought a level of personal inspiration into the conversation. Here was a filmmaker who not only understood the film, but seemed inspired by it. Searching through July’s work, I looked for that inspiration…but couldn’t find it. The acidic nature of Me, You, and Everyone We Know and The Future both seemed to strangle their tenderness. Then I saw Kajillionaire.

It was 2003 when Evan Rachel Wood had a break out moment with the teen drama “Thirteen,” earning her first Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for Best Actress. This year she could return to the Globes with her second film nomination and fourth overall with the family heist film “Kajillionaire.”
SEEEvan Rachel Wood (‘Westworld’) on Dolores being one of the ‘crown jewels’ of her career [Complete Interview Transcript]
Directed by Miranda July and co-starring Richard Jenkins, Debra Winger and Gina Rodriguez, “Kajillionaire” follows Wood as Old Dolio Dyne who is used as an accomplice by her parents in their life of scams and petty crime. In the detached daughter role, Woods is given an opportunity to deliver what Richard Brody (The New Yorker) calls a “virtually choreographic” performance. He says that she “achieves wonders of expressivity with a tamped-down neutrality that masks a volcano of unlived life.”
