Netflix has bolstered their number of reality TV projects in recent years. While the streaming giant has turned to competition and dating series that are relatively easy to produce and lead to untold hours of binging, they have also expanded their lifestyle-style reality programs as well. Series like Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, Cooking with Paris, and Interior Design Masters have proven they have what it takes to keep the audience in their seats, and if the streaming giant is known for anything, it's excessively investing in a good thing.

Fox is developing a single-camera comedy series based on the Australian show “Mr. Black,” Variety has learned.
The half-hour series follows the acid-tongued Mr. Black, a man who has one dying wish: to break up his adult daughter and her boyfriend – whom he happens to live with. The original series, which premiered in Australia earlier this year, was created by Adam Zwar and produced by Cjz for Australia’s Network Ten.
No writer is currently attached to the American version. Gail Berman will executive produce via SideCar, with SideCar and Fox Entertainment producing. Fox announced a new deal with Berman back in February just ahead of the 21st Century Fox-Disney merger. Under the new deal, Berman and SideCar are to identify and incubate programming both for the network and third-party platforms. SideCar will be responsible for developing scripted and unscripted programming to complement the active development of Fox.

Just a few years ago streaming services didn’t even produce reality series, but this year Netflix landed five Emmy nominations in four reality/competition categories and sparked buzz (and viewer joy) that may encourage linear networks to take more chances in the increasingly crowded reality space.
“With the amount of shows we’ve rolled out collectively, it felt inevitable that with many more programs to offer, the voters would embrace some of the new programs,” says Netflix vice president of nonfiction series and comedy specials Brandon Riegg. He notes the streamer leans tonally into more positive, aspirational and escapist reality programming. “A lot of what we’ve talked about is there’s so much great content out there, we do need to differentiate ourselves. I think having that mentality allows for these projects to bubble up that might feel unconventional but it fits within the spectrum of what we’re trying to program to.

When Marie Kondo (Netflix’s “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo”) needs a place to work in Los Angeles, she sets up in a West Hollywood house. Most often, she finds herself writing at a long, wood dining-room table, which has a view of the backyard pool, if you lean back just right. Since the space is not solely her own, she makes sure to bring specific items to better foster a sense of structure and serenity to get work done. “I am usually writing about how to spark more joy in our lives and how to let the atmosphere around us spark more joy, so it’s very important that the spaces in which I create also spark joy for me,” she says.

Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman are reunited again to bask in Emmy nominations — this time for their work as hosts of NBC’s unscripted crafting competition series “Making It!” Marie Kondo, the fastidious star of Netflix’s “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo,” could clean up at the ceremony with two noms, one as host of a reality or competition program, the other for structured reality show. But Kondo and the “Parks and Recreation” duo face high-wattage competition in the reality host field, starting with reigning champ RuPaul of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” who is trying for a four-peat after owning the category since 2016. Two other perennial Emmy magnets are also up for hosting honors: Ellen DeGeneres for NBC’s “Ellen’s Game of Games” and James Corden for CBS’ “The World’s Best.”
The range of nominees across Emmy’s reality and unscripted series categories underscores how broad the content of unscripted programming has become.

As diversity and inclusion attempt to stay afloat in Hollywood, this morning’s Emmy nominations showed that although the needle has been slowly moving, it hasn’t been moving enough to see change. This year, there were only 24 acting nominations for people of color. In addition, two reality show hosts of color were nominated which brings the total to 26. This is a major dip from last year’s record 38 and even less than 2017 which counted 27 diverse nominees.
Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us came in with the most nominations for people of color including a first-time nod for Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for Jharrel Jerome’s stunning turn as the real-life Korey Wise in the Netflix limited series. Other well deserved nominations from the series included Niecy Nash and Aunjanue Ellis for Lead Actress Limited Series or Movie as well as Marsha Stephanie Blake for Supporting Actress.

The highest-ranking among them, Hend Baghdady, comes from The Jackal Group, which Berman (pictured above) founded. Baghdaddy, who developed and executive produced “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo,” is not the only one of the bunch with The Jackal Group on her resume.
In (generally) descending-rung order on the “content development accelerator’s” corporate ladder: Baghdady is executive vice president of development and production; Susan Lierle is senior vice president of business and legal affairs; Jeff Nemon is senior vice president of drama development; Alana Romoff is vice president of development; Matthew Chadwick is vice president of alternative programming and production; and Eduardo Lopez-Mendez is manager of business and legal affairs.

Netflix is famously tight-lipped when it comes to revealing how many people are tuning in to its endless supply of movies and TV series, though the streaming giant does occasionally toot its own horn when one of its titles does especially well. Now the company is experimenting with a weekly list of its most-watched offerings in the UK, with nature docuseries “Our Planet” topping the first edition.
In a Twitter thread, the company announced that it will be releasing such lists on a weekly basis from here on out. To compile them, “we look at the most-watched individual season of a show, film or special (regardless of when it launched). ‘Watched’ means members finished at least 70% of one episode.”
“It’s a test as we want to make sure this information is useful for you,” Netflix added. “So we may tweak it in the weeks ahead. eg. we’re not including kids right now.

Add one more honor to Sandra Oh’s list. The “Killing Eve” actress, who was recently named to the Time 100, has landed on another list of 100 esteemed people: Gold House’s A100.

The list honors impactful Asians in a number of fields ranging from media and entertainment to social activism and politics.

Fox and Jackal Group chairman and CEO Gail Berman are partnering on a new production venture, Variety has learned.
The new company is called SideCar, which is described as a content development accelerator headed by Berman. The new unit will work side-by-side with Fox, identifying and incubating programming both for the network and third-party platforms. SideCar will be responsible for developing scripted and unscripted programming to complement the active development of Fox. Fox will retain ownership of all series that originate under the SideCar banner.
“The beauty of a SideCar is that the riders are literally headed in the same direction, and having Gail Berman riding shotgun is about as good as it gets,” said Charlie Collier, CEO of Fox Entertainment. “Michael Thorn, Rob Wade and their teams have Fox firing on all cylinders. Marie Kondo changed the lives of packrats everywhere when she released her best-selling how-to book of minimalism, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up," in 2014. So no one was surprised when she landed her own show on Netflix. Tidying Up with Marie Kondo is nothing but eight episodes of a woman helping random people de-clutter their homes, so what's with all the hullabaloo? The show's success lies in how deeply satisfying it is to watch people change their lives and homes for the better, but it's not the only show that offers that kind of gratification. Here are 10 reality shows that are just as satisfying as Tidying Up With Marie Kondo.

As you’ve surely noticed by now, Netflix boasts an ever-expanding library of original movies and TV series. “Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened,” “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch,” and “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” are just some of the conversation starters to premiere on the streaming giant in recent weeks, and they have something in common: They all cost money to acquire and/or produce. So much, in fact, that Netflix spent $12 billion on content in 2018 — and, according to Wall Street analysts (per Variety), could see that number rise as high as $15 billion this year.
“We believe [Netflix] could, if it chose, ramp margins more quickly by limiting growth in its substantial investment in global marketing and production, but it is (wisely) playing the long game,” Ben Swinburne of Morgan Stanley wrote in a note. In 2016, two years after the English translation of “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing” became a best-seller, Marie Kondo moved to Los Angeles to establish her home organization consultancy in America. Amidst her culture shock, the Japanese native soon realized her new country also provided something that her homeland did not: unprecedented levels of clutter on which to practice her art.
On Netflix’s “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo,” we see her gently guide clients to confront years of accumulation: towering stacks of baseball cards, never-worn athletic shoes literally decaying in the box. Kondo admits that one client, an empty-nester obsessed with collecting Christmas nutcracker dolls, has more clothes than she has ever encountered.
“Japanese homes are much smaller than American homes,” Kondo said through her interpreter, Marie Iida, who also appears on the show. “American homes have ample space so that it’s a difference of quantity.

Book lovers, calm down. When “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo” hit Netflix Jan. 1, America embraced her little folded T-shirt rectangles and shoeboxes reused to organize small items. But when it came to tossing out books — well, those were fighting words.
Do Not listen to Marie Kondo or Konmari in relation to books. Fill your apartment & world with them. I don’t give a shite if you throw out your knickers and Tupperware but the woman is very misguided about Books. Every human needs a v extensive library not clean, boring shelves
— Anakana Schofield (@AnakanaSchofiel) January 3, 2019
Others were more levelheaded, noting that the KonMari Method was not tantamount to book burning.
What Marie Kondo Says: Think about getting rid of books you aren't going to read or reread.
What Twitter Hears: Let's burn all books and slay the writers! Let the streets run red with their blood as our literary pyre's smoke blocks out the sun!

Millions of Americans are turning to a 34-year-old Japanese “organizing consultant” to help de-clutter their homes, and for Marie Kondo, the tidying expert and eponymous star behind Netflix’s “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo,” there’s nothing that “sparks joy” more than seeing people take ownership of their belongings — and their lives.
Kondo, whose eight-episode series premiered on Netflix on New Year’s Eve, touts the virtues of the “KonMari Method” of organizing, which aims to pare down the tidying experience. Rather than cleaning out room by room, the KonMari Method promotes sorting by category, and assigning a sentimentality to each item. As Kondo writes on her website, “Keep only those things that speak to the heart, and discard items that no longer spark joy. Thank them for their service — then let them go.”

It’s hard to imagine a cannier choice of premiere date getting made in 2019 than the one happening on the year’s first day.
On Jan. 1 — that day of putting into practice optimistic resolutions and, sometimes, enduring a bit of self-flagellation over the excesses of the night before — Netflix releases the first season of “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo,” an eight-episode self-help reality show spotlighting the Japanese decluttering guru and her vaunted “KonMari” method.
Happily for those spending their New Year’s Day seeking a bit of uplift for the year ahead, Kondo makes decluttering seem within reach, and appealing, too. Better still for all television fans, she’s an amiable presence on a show that wears its status as an adaptation of her mega-hit book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” lightly, a series that steers clear of overproduction in favor of the clean lines of classically-built home-improvement television.
