Image
Tears were flowing as Tristen Epps-Long was named the Season 22 winner of Bravo’s Top Chef during the emotional June 12 finale. The fan-favorite impressed judges Kristen Kish, Tom Colicchio, Gail Simmons and guest three-Michelin-starred chef Clare Smyth. His progressive four-course meal infused Italian cuisine complementing the backdrop beauty of Milan and his passion for shining a light on Afro-Caribbean cuisine. Along with earning the coveted title, he received $250,000, a flight credit for $125,000, feature in Food & Wine magazine and an appearance at the annual Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado. The Houston resident also has the opportunity to headline their own exclusive dinner at the historic James Beard House in New York and also will present at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards in Chicago on June 16. Just when fans thought Top Chef couldn’t get more intense, Episode 13 of Season 22 brought one of the most frustrating eliminations of the season. The final four chefs were just one challenge away from heading to the grand finale in Milan, but not everyone made it.

That’s right – in a twist that left quite literally everyone confused, the judges threw in a gimmicky elimination round that felt more like a reality show stunt than a serious culinary test. As emotions ran high in the kitchen, it was an unlucky day for one chef who had to pack his knives and leave the competition. Let’s dive deeper to find out what went down in Top Chef Season 22, Episode 13.

Kristen Kish dishes on Season 22 of ‘Top Chef,’ Emmys, and the show’s global impact: ‘It’s all driven by the fans’
Image
Kristen Kish, the Emmy-nominated host of Bravo's Top Chef, returned for her second season at the helm, offering a fresh perspective shaped by her experience as both a former contestant and a champion of the iconic reality TV cooking competition.

The Season 10 winner stepped into Padma Lakshmi's shoes as the host of Top Chef last year — and wasted no time proving she was up to the task. Her debut earned her a 2024 Emmy nomination for Best Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program.

Now, as Season 22 nears its spicy finale on June 12, Kish dishes on everything from her favorite moments in the kitchen to her dream guest judges: "My parents! They're the classic Midwest mom and dad—I’d be highly entertained by their commentary.” Plus, she reveals why she’s settling into hosting —“The joints are looser, I feel more at ease” — and breaks down what...

‘Top Chef’ Season 22 Episode 9 Has Made Me Question the Show’s Judgement After the Recent Elimination
Image
Like all the previous seasons, anticipation was quite high for Top Chef Season 22, and it obviously didn’t disappoint. Each week, we’ve watched some of the most skilled chefs in the country fighting it out for the grand prize, even being a part of some of the most out-of-the-box challenges of the show. The same is true for Episode 9 as well, which brought a unique Tom Cruise-inspired task for the chefs.

While some managed to grab the opportunity with both hands, others simply failed to captivate the judges. But what’s surprising and a little unfair for me is that the most consistent and creative chef was sent home. Let’s dive deeper.

Looks like Top Chef is playing it too loose with its rules this season

This week’s Episode 9 of Top Chef Season 22 took things to a whole new level — and not in a good way.

‘Top Chef’ Season 22 Episode 9 Recap: Who Went Home After Tom Cruise Inspired Risky Challenge Left Me Concerned
Image
Just when I thought Top Chef couldn’t get more intense, this week’s episode dropped us straight into an action movie territory. Inspired by none other than Tom Cruise and his famous Mission: Impossible legacy, Episode 9 of Season 22 served up a challenge that was all about taking some major risks.

And just when I thought the stakes couldn’t get any higher, a familiar face from the movie franchise walked straight into the Top Chef kitchen. After this, what followed was a wild ride that kept me both excited and seriously worried for the participating chefs. Let’s dive deeper to understand what actually happened in this episode, and who went home.

‘Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen’ recap: After disastrous maple challenge, eliminated chef must contend with Canadian bacon
Image
"After being eliminated I felt like I truly hit a rock bottom," said eliminated Top Chef contestant Bailey Sullivan upon entering Last Chance Kitchen. "It's crazy too, because I watched a lot of Top Chef, and there's moments where you see people do things and you're like, why are you doing that? And that's what I felt like I was saying to myself." Alas, in "Brunch à la Boulud," she decided to make a tart for renowned chef and guest judge Daniel Boulud, even though baked goods aren't her specialty. That was a maple syrup challenge, but Tom Colicchio wasn't about to let her escape Canadian delicacies that easily. So for her Lck battle against Sam Olayinka and Mimi Weissenborn, she had to make an elevated dinner entree out of Canadian bacon. Watch the entire battle above.

‘Top Chef’ Host Kristen Kish to Mark First Emmy Nomination With New Tattoo
Image
Top Chef host Kristen Kish has long collected black tattoos on her arms to mark special occasions in her life.

So even if she doesn’t win, her 2024 Emmys nomination for best reality TV host, deserves some ink, she said. “100 percent. Even just the (Emmy) nomination as a first time host of Top Chef, my first nomination and the first in my entire life and my entire career, I will mark it regardless if I win or not. Because already this is one of those life moments for me. That is 1000 percent worth remembering forever,” an excited Kish told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday.

The Emmy nomination is especially sweet for Kish as it comes after she replaced Padma Lakshmi as the first new Top Chef host in 19 seasons, with her first season as host of the Bravo cooking show also featuring a series of key format alterations. “I can...

Top Chef's Locations Sabotage Some Of The Contestants, According To Claudette Zepeda-Wilkins
Image
Top Chef's filming location can disadvantage competitors due to limited ingredient options. Claudette Zepeda-Wilkins struggled with Mexican ingredients in Colorado's Whole Foods. Zepeda-Wilkins overcame her disadvantage by adapting her cuisine in Last Chance Kitchen.

Since Top Chef is widely considered to be one of the best reality shows ever, fans love learning more about it. For most reality shows, fans would be most concerned about drama, like the winning chef who was accused of stealing a recipe.

However, many Top Chef fans care more about what it is like to make Top Chef. For example, fans want to know the worst dish Padma Lakshmi ate on the show. Another fact about making Top Chef that fans don't realize is that, according to one chef, some of the competitors can be sabotaged because of where the show is filmed.

This article will reveal why Top Chef's filming location can...

“Top Chef: Wisconsin” was a season of change for the cooking competition series. Michelle Wallace on her shocking ‘Top Chef’ elimination: ‘I’m a badass’
Image
“I’m feeling okay surprisingly,” said Michelle Wallace in her exit interview at the end of this week’s episode of “Top Chef,” “Lay It All on the Table.” She was sent home after struggling with a challenge where the cheftestants had to serve their food right there on the table instead of on plates. And unfortunately for her, “Last Chance Kitchen” just concluded last week, so there will be no opportunity for her to return to the competition. She finishes season 21 in sixth place.

Wallace was in trouble from the very beginning of the challenge. She knew she wanted to highlight salmon and beets in a brunch-inspired meal, but that’s all the inspiration she managed to come up with. The irony was that she’s actually good at food served on tables. “Crawfish boil, that’s right up my alley.

‘Top Chef’ season 21 episode 11 recap: The cheftestants don’t need no stinkin’ plates when they ‘Lay It All on the Table’

Last week on “Top Chef” in “Door County Fish Boil,” the cheftestants went to the beach for a flavorful fish conflagration, which led to the elimination of Soo Ahn, who had come through “Last Chance Kitchen” as the season’s surprise 16th cheftestant. That leaves five competitors on the main show (plus one returning this week from “Lck”) competing for a chance to win a feature in Food and Wine magazine; an appearance at the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado; and $250,000 in prize money: Manny Barella, Danny Garcia, Dan Jacobs, Savannah Miller and Michelle Wallace. So what happened on May 29 in “Lay It All on the Table”?

“It’s a new day. My hand feels a lot better,” says Savannah the morning after the fish boil challenge. She stabbed herself pretty badly, which threw her off her game and landed her in the bottom three. “But having a...

Last week on “Top Chef” in “The Good Land,” the cheftestants had to honor Native American ingredients and cuisine, which limited the types of ingredients they were allowed to use. In the end the judges eliminated two of them based on that challenge and based on how the chefs had done in that week’s Quickfire: Laura Ozyilmaz and Amanda Turner. ‘Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen’ recap: Two-part ‘Top Chef Classic’ has the chefs racing for ingredients [Watch]
Image
Because “Top Chef” judge and “Last Chance Kitchen” host Tom Colicchio sent two chefs back into the competition at the midway point of the season (Soo Ahn and Kaleena Bliss), that meant the judges were obligated to, at one point down the line, eliminate two chefs to balance everything out. They did just that in “The Good Land,” where the chefs were tasked with honoring Native American cuisine. Amanda Turner and Laura Ozyilmaz were both guilty of overloading their dishes with too many ideas and ingredients, so both had to pack their knives and go. But how did they do when they both had to go up against reigning “Lck” champ Kevin D’Andrea? Watch part one of their triple threat match above, and scroll down to watch part two.

‘Top Chef’ season 21 episode 9 recap: ‘The Good Land’ honored Native American cuisine, so hands off the dairy!

Last week was “Restaurant Wars” on “Top Chef,” one of the most hotly anticipated and punishingly difficult challenges of every season. This year it resulted in the second elimination of cheftestant Kaleena Bliss, who decided to forego “Last Chance Kitchen” to protect her mental health, taking her out of the competition for good.

That leaves eight competitors on the main show competing for a chance to win a feature in Food and Wine magazine; an appearance at the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado; and $250,000 in prize money: Soo Ahn, Manny Barella, Danny Garcia, Dan Jacobs, Savannah Miller, Laura Ozyilmaz, Amanda Turner and Michelle Wallace. ‘Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen’ recap: Shocking decision leads to unexpected head-to-head after ‘Restaurant Wars’
Image
Kaleena Bliss was eliminated from “Top Chef” for a second time at the end of “Restaurant Wars,” which brought her back to “Last Chance Kitchen” to face reigning “Lck” champ Kevin D’Andrea. Would she be able to fight her way back into the competition again?

… The short answer is no, but not because she lost the “Lck” battle against Kevin. When she entered the kitchen and addressed him and host Tom Colicchio, she announced, much to their surprise, “Unfortunately, I’m not going to be competing today. One of the hardest things I think that I’ve had to learn in my journey of being a chef is that I need to put my mental health first before everything else. My heart’s telling me that if I were to step into this kitchen right now, I wouldn’t be able to give either of you my best.”

‘Top Chef’ 21 episode 8 recap: Kitchen mix-ups, long wait times and confused concepts – must be ‘Restaurant Wars’

“Top Chef” cheftestant and “Top Chef France” alum Kevin D’Andrea was eliminated last week in the ballpark-inspired “Sausage Race” challenge, leaving nine cheftestants on the main show competing for a chance to win a feature in Food and Wine magazine; an appearance at the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado; and $250,000 in prize money: Soo Ahn, Manny Barella, Kaleena Bliss, Danny Garcia, Dan Jacobs, Savannah Miller, Laura Ozyilmaz, Amanda Turner and Michelle Wallace.

So what happened when those cheftestants reached the famous — or infamous — “Restaurant Wars” in season 21, episode eight?

The episode begins with ominous music and black cars on the road. “I don’t know where the Gps is set to, but I know the area where it’s set to,” says native Wisconsinite Dan. “It’s right on the lake. There are so many things that this could be.” They arrive at Discovery World and find host...

“It was my first time that I was in the bottom, and it was such a bad dish that I got eliminated, so that’s definitely a punch in the gut,” says Rasika Venkatesa as she enters “Last Chance Kitchen.” “My business on ‘Top Chef’ feels unfinished.” What happened when she faced off against Kevin D’Andrea for a chance to return to the competition? Watch this week’s episode of “Lck,” titled “Let’s Play Ball,” above, or read on to find out what happened.

See‘Top Chef’ 21 episode 7 recap: ‘Sausage Race’ was a ball field battle of the wieners

Rasika was one of the “Top Chef” front-runners this season. She won two Elimination Challenges and one Quickfire Challenge, and she didn’t have a single low-scoring dish … until she was done in by flavorless, slimy eggplant in “Chaos Cuisine.” But her strong track record up to that point is...

‘Top Chef’ 21 episode 7 recap: ‘Sausage Race’ was a ball field battle of the wieners
Image
Early “Top Chef” favorite Rasika Venkatesa was eliminated last week in the aptly titled “Chaos Cuisine,” leaving 10 cheftestants on the main show competing for a chance to win a feature in Food and Wine magazine; an appearance at the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado; and $250,000 in prize money: Soo Ahn, Manny Barella, Kaleena Bliss, Kevin D’Andrea, Danny Garcia, Dan Jacobs, Savannah Miller, Laura Ozyilmaz, Amanda Turner and Michelle Wallace.

So what happened in episode seven, “Sausage Race”?

“It feels weird not having Rasika here,” says Danny, who has found a new running buddy in Savannah. Rasika was sent home last week in a result that was pretty shocking because she and fellow bottom chef Michelle have been two of the strongest, most consistent chefs of the entire competition thus far. “I felt like I was going home,” Michelle admits. Being in the bottom is “a kick in the ass.

‘Top Chef’ 21 episode 6 recap: Soo and Kaleena went from ‘Last Chance Kitchen’ to confounding ‘Chaos Cuisine’ challenge
Image
Charly Pierre was eliminated from “Top Chef” last week in “Supper Club,” leaving nine cheftestants on the main show competing for a chance to win a feature in Food and Wine magazine; an appearance at the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado; and $250,000 in prize money: Manny Barella, Kevin D’Andrea, Danny Garcia, Dan Jacobs, Savannah Miller, Laura Ozyilmaz, Amanda Turner, Rasika Venkatesa and Michelle Wallace. Except no, there weren’t just nine chefs left in the competition. This week not one, but two entered the show from “Last Chance Kitchen.”

So what happened in “Top Chef” season 21, episode six, “Chaos Cuisine,” when the size of the cast actually grew?

The episode begins with some “power bottom training” in the gym with Manny and Kevin, who have become close over the course of the season, bonded over exercise much like Danny and Rasika, but also bonded over their struggles in the competition.

‘Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen’ recap: Shocking twists and someone returns to competition in ‘Mid-Season Finale’ [Watch]
Image
“Top Chef” hasn’t finished “Last Chance Kitchen” for the season just yet, but the second-chance after show has reached a major milestone. In the two-part “Mid-Season Finale,” host and judge Tom Colicchio sent someone back into the main competition. Watch part one above, and scroll down for part two.

Charly Pierre entered “Lck” this week after he was eliminated from the main competition in “Supper Club,” where the cheftestants had to team up to make traditional five-course Supper Club meals. Pierre was in charge of the fish dish on the losing team, and he drastically overcooked it, so he was cooked. “Being cut on ‘Top Chef’ sucked,” he said. Now as he sought redemption, “I’m doing it for Haiti, doing it for New Orleans, and my restaurant and my sous chef and my cooks. We’ll do it one challenge at a time.”

The challenge this time was...

‘Top Chef’ 21 episode 5 recap: In ‘Supper Club,’ one budget-busting chef risked bringing down their entire team

Alisha Elenz and Kaleena Bliss were eliminated from “Top Chef” last week in “The Wright Way,” leaving 10 cheftestants on the main show (and two in “Last Chance Kitchen“) competing for a chance to win a feature in Food and Wine magazine; an appearance at the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado; and $250,000 in prize money: Manny Barella, Kevin D’Andrea, Danny Garcia, Dan Jacobs, Savannah Miller, Laura Ozyilmaz, Charly Pierre, Amanda Turner, Rasika Venkatesa and Michelle Wallace.

So what happened to the chefs in season 21, episode five, “Supper Club”?

The morning after getting some tough love from host Kristen Kish and guest judge Buddha Lo about their not-so-great dishes in the Frank Lloyd Wright challenge, Laura reminisces about her closeness with her sister. It sounds like their parents had the girls fend for themselves when they were just teenagers. “I had to worry about paying the bills, to buy groceries,...

‘Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen’ episode 3 recap: ‘Plates Aplenty’ was a high-stakes triple threat match [Watch]
Image
Another episode of “Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen,” another opportunity for Tom Colicchio to explain to eliminated contestants who the hell the new guy is: Soo Ahn, this season’s secret 16th cheftestant. This was a triple threat match, though, since this week’s “Top Chef” episode, “The Wright Way,” ended in the double elimination of Kaleena Bliss and Alisha Elenz. This would be a single elimination match, though, with just one chef of the three being sent home at the end. So what happened in “Plates Aplenty”? Watch the episode above, or read on to find out.

Alisha and Kaleena were eliminated as a team in a challenge inspired by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, so “Lck” brought a little more architecture to the kitchen for this redemptive cookoff. The chefs were presented with a variety of dishes and vessels with which they would plate their meals. They would choose...

Kenny Nguyen was ousted from “Top Chef” last week in “Take it Cheesy,” leaving 12 cheftestants on the main show (and one in “Last Chance Kitchen“) competing for a chance to win a feature in Food and Wine magazine; an appearance at the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado; and $250,000 in prize money: Manny Barella, Kaleena Bliss, Kevin D’Andrea, Alisha Elenz, Danny Garcia, Dan Jacobs, Savannah Miller, Laura Ozyilmaz, Charly Pierre, Amanda Turner, Rasika Venkatesa and Michelle Wallace.

So what happened to the chefs in season 21, episode 4, “The Wright Way”?

Well, we’re coming in hot right from the beginning of the episode, with host Kristen Kish announcing that there will be no Quickfire Challenge this week “because we’re building to something big.”

‘Top Chef’ elimination odds: Who will pack their knives and go in ‘The Wright Way’ team challenge?
Image
There are 12 chefs left in the main competition on “Top Chef” (and Soo Ahn still waiting to pounce in “Last Chance Kitchen”), and tonight in “The Wright Way” those chefs will split up into six teams of two to create dishes that will celebrate famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. So who will exit the competition in what last week’s preview of tonight’s episode indicated will be a double elimination?

As of this writing the consensus of Gold Derby users is that Charly Pierre will be eliminated. He hasn’t really distinguished himself in the competition thus far, flying somewhat under the radar through the first few episodes. He has mostly been safe through challenges, but he also cooked bottom dishes on two occasions. In “Living the High Life,” he was in the bottom three for the Elimination Challenge...

“Just because I got eliminated doesn’t mean I’m beaten down or defeated,” says Kenny Nguyen upon entering “Last Chance Kitchen” upon his ouster from “Top Chef” in the episode “Take it Cheesy.” “I’m going to show my grandma, who gave me this necklace, that she’s the reason why I’m a little bit of a hard-ass … I’m walking into ‘Last Chance Kitchen’ with the full intention of bodying every single person that I see in that room.” But when he sees surprise 16th contestant Soo Ahn standing there waiting for him, he’s like, “Who the f*ck is this guy?” Watch episode two of “Lck,” titled “The Big Stink,” above.

‘Top Chef’ 21 episode 3 recap: Who was gouda-nuff to win that sweet cheddar in ‘Take it Cheesy’
Image
The cheftestants on “Top Chef” have had a couple of weeks to find their footing in the world of Wisconsin cuisine, tackling some cooking basics in “Chef’s Test” and then exploring hops and bar snacks in “Living the High Life.” But it wouldn’t be a Wisconsin season without cheese. So what happened in episode three, “Take it Cheesy”? Read on to find out.

Valentine Howell Jr. was ousted from the competition in “Living the High Life,” leaving 13 on the main show (and one in “Last Chance Kitchen“) competing for a chance to win a feature in Food and Wine magazine; an appearance at the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado; and $250,000 in prize money: Manny Barella, Kaleena Bliss, Kevin D’Andrea, Alisha Elenz, Danny Garcia, Dan Jacobs, Savannah Miller, Kenny Nguyen, Laura Ozyilmaz, Charly Pierre, Amanda Turner, Rasika Venkatesa and Michelle Wallace.

‘Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen’ recap: Season 21 premiere introduces ‘The 16th Chef’ [Watch]
Image
After two “Top Chef” challenges there have been two eliminations: David Murphy in “Chef’s Test” and Valentine Howell Jr. in “Living the High Life.” So they went head-to-head in “Last Chance Kitchen” for a chance to return to the competition … Except they didn’t. David was nowhere to be found. Perhaps his bottom-three cookoff in “Chef’s Test” served as its own kind of “Last Chance Kitchen,” because there’s no mention of him at all in this week’s first “Lck.” As far as I can tell he’s out for good. Watch this week’s “Lck” above.

Instead, Valentine had to battle Soo Ahn, a secret 16th cheftestant who the show added to the competition specifically for “Lck.” He’ll have to win five times for a chance to enter the main competition at all. Tom Colicchio gave him and Valentine a challenge that flipped Valentine’s last challenge on its head.

‘Top Chef’ 21 episode 2 recap: In ‘Living the High Life,’ the cheftestants raised the bar on bar snacks
Image
“Top Chef” wasted no time throwing the contestants’ into the heat of the competition, going straight into the Elimination Challenge in last week’s season premiere, “Chef’s Test.” Some chefs passed their test with flying colors while others struggled. So who went out in episode two, “Living the High Life”? Read on to find out.

David Murphy was the first chef ousted from the competition, leaving 14 on the main show competing for a chance to win a feature in Food and Wine magazine; an appearance at the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado; and $250,000 in prize money: Manny Barella, Kaleena Bliss, Kevin D’Andrea, Alisha Elenz, Danny Garcia, Valentine Howell Jr., Dan Jacobs, Savannah Miller, Kenny Nguyen, Laura Ozyilmaz, Charly Pierre, Amanda Turner, Rasika Venkatesa and Michelle Wallace.

Manny won the Elimination Challenge in “Chef’s Test,” so he has immunity from elimination, but he doesn’t want to get too relaxed.

‘Top Chef’ elimination predictions: Who will be sent home at the end of episode 2, ‘Living the High Life’?
Image
Only five Gold Derby users correctly predicted that David Murphy would be the first cheftestant eliminated from “Top Chef” season 21, but that’s pretty impressive considering we hadn’t seen any of the contestants in action yet. How accurate will our odds be forecasting tonight’s second episode, “Living the High Life”? See who we’re betting on here.

As of this writing it’s a close call between Amanda Turner and Rasika Venkatesa. Turner had one close call already. In “Chef’s Test” she was tasked with cooking a soup for the judges, but hers was much too salty, which the judges’ couldn’t get past. So she ended up in the bottom three along with the worst grilled chicken chef (Kenny Nguyen) and the worst stuffed pasta chef (Murphy). But instead of comparing their dishes to decide who would be eliminated, host Kristen Kish instructed them to make...

Surprise! New contestant Soo Ahn joins ‘Top Chef’ season 21: He’ll compete in ‘Last Chance Kitchen’
Image
“Top Chef” started its 21st season last week with 15 cheftestants vying for the grand prize, but the show revealed there will be a 16th contestant entering the kitchen: Soo Ahn will fight his way through “Last Chance Kitchen” for a chance to win a spot on the main show and ultimately win the whole competition. In past seasons Brooke Williamson, Joe Flamm and current host Kristen Kish won “Lck” and then came back to win the grand prize. Can he make that arduous climb?

“Top Chef” is unique in giving its eliminated contestants a chance to earn their way back into the competition. In the digital after-show “Last Chance Kitchen,” hosted and judged by Tom Colicchio, the ousted chefs face off against each other to complete a challenging culinary task in a limited time. The loser is eliminated from the show for good, while the winner gets to stay in...

‘Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen’ season 21 preview: ‘Please meet this season’s 16th competitor …’ [Watch]
Image
“After every elimination, I’ll be waiting right here to give each chef their one shot at redemption,” says Tom Colicchio in the preview for “Last Chance Kitchen,” which will air after “Top Chef” season 21 episodes and pit the ousted chefs against each other for a chance to return to the competition. “But this season, I may do things a little differently — please meet this season’s 16th competitor …” Watch the preview above.

All is not lost for chefs who have a bad day on the Bravo cooking competition. “Last Chance Kitchen” gives them a chance to make a comeback. But it’s not easy. They have to go head-to-head against another eliminated chef to prepare a dish under a tight time limit. The loser is eliminated from “Top Chef” for good. But the winner gets to continue through “Lck” until finally a chef is selected to return to the competition.

Let Kristen Kish Ease You Into the New Era of ‘Top Chef’
Image
Wednesday’s season 21 premiere of Top Chef is a hard reset in a number of ways, most obvious among them being the new host. For the first time in 19 seasons and just as many years, it isn’t Padma Lakshmi gently but decisively telling an unlucky hopeful to pack their knives and go. It’s Kristen Kish.

The season 10 winner, initially kicked off the competition before fighting back to the finale on spin-off Last Chance Kitchen, emerged as an early and clear favorite to fill Padma’s shoes when she announced her exit last summer. Kish has been a familiar face to the franchise since her 2012 win, expanding her TV horizons by hosting the Netflix update of Iron Chef and National Geographic’s Restaurants at the End of the World. But those who tune in to the start of Top Chef‘s Wisconsin-set cycle will notice that Kish isn’t the only change.

Top Chef: Why Padma Lakshmi Isn’t Back for Season 21 and Who Kristen Kish Is
Image
When Top Chef makes its long-awaited return for its historic 21st season, it’ll be with a new host, chef and TV presenter Kristen Kish. You may not only recognize Kish from her shows on the Travel Channel, TruTV, and National Geographic but also as a former Top Chef competitor.

In fact, Kish won her season of the competition show, after first being eliminated in season 10 but then making a comeback in Last Chance Kitchen to ultimately beat out 23 other chefs. It’s an impressive resume, to say the least, and there’s arguably no one more qualified to take on the job of host and judge on Top Chef than someone who’s actually been through the gauntlet.

As great as it is to see Kish as the new face of Top Chef, some longtime fans might be left wondering why former host Padma Lakshmi decided to step down from the show.

After 20 Seasons, ‘Top Chef’ Introduces a New Era: ‘There Was No Better Time to Do It’
Image
After 20 seasons, “Top Chef” has gone through some significant changes. Most notably, former champion Kristen Kish replaces longtime host Padma Lakshmi for Season 21, which also introduces its first major twist — at least since the introduction of redemption with “Last Chance Kitchen” — to the overall gameplay in two decades.

“It was a great opportunity for us to take a look at what we’ve done for the first two decades and start thinking about the next two decades,” Ryan Flynn, SVP of Current Production for NBCUniversal Entertainment and Streaming, told IndieWire. “With Padma moving on, it really felt like a great exclamation point” on that period of the franchise.

With “Top Chef” Season 21, which sees Kish join returning judges Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons for the installment set in Wisconsin, there was an opportunity to “sort of shake the rhythm a little bit” and “challenge ourselves to step outside of the...

Who Is Kristen Kish? Meet ‘Top Chef’s New Host
Image
Top Chef has a new host for the first time since its second season when Padma Lakshmi replaced Katie Lee Joel. For Season 21, Top Chef: Wisconsin, it’s Top Chef: Seattle alum Kristen Kish who’ll tell folks to “pack their knives and go.” But who is Kish? Though she might be familiar to superfans of the culinary competition show, here’s a breakdown of all the key details. How Is Kristen Kish Connected to the Top Chef Franchise? Kish was initially introduced to the Top Chef world as a Season 10 competitor in 2012, which she ultimately won. It wasn’t an easy path to victory for her, though, as she was initially eliminated during the “Restaurant Wars” episode. However, she won her way back into the main competition with five consecutive wins in Last Chance Kitchen against other eliminated participants. David Moir/Bravo Kish went head-to-head with Brooke Williamson in...
