On Wednesday night, Stephen Colbert opened “The Late Show” with a joke about Donald Trump’s tariffs. During “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” Jimmy Kimmel spoke to Denis Leary about his new Fox sitcom, “Going Dutch.” And over on Netflix, John Mulaney peeped at his neighbors through a telescope.
One of these things is not like the other. Even if the gist of Mulaney’s bit sounds like it might be setting up some sort of game — similar to what “Tonight Show” viewers seem to enjoy — the execution doesn’t deliver Jimmy Fallon’s typical tomfoolery. (Every “neighbor” Mulaney saw was soon attacked by a man with a lamp.) Instead, the discomforting gag further separates “Everybody’s Live” from traditional late-night talk shows, even as it doubles down on what Mulaney already created with his 2024 cult hit, “Everybody’s in L.A.”

Chelsea Handler is heading back to Netflix this spring. The comedian’s upcoming standup special, “Chelsea Handler: The Feeling,” will premiere on the streamer on March 25. And this time around, she’s rallying against pickleball.
“I blame Covid for pickleball,” Handler says in the first clip for the upcoming special. “When people bang on and on about pickleball, that is not real exercise, Ok? So shut the f–k up about it. You would burn more calories shoving an actual pickle up your asshole on a pickleball court then playing a game of pickleball.”
Throughout the special, Handler also jokes about her own birth, her business ventures as a teenager and what a press release describes as “a frenzy of ill-timed events all motivated by ‘the feeling.'” The special was written and performed by Handler with Shannon Hartman, who previously executive produced Handler’s “Revolution” special and worked on “Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj,...

Over the years, The Daily Show has employed some of the best talk show hosts, including Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. The people who lead The Daily Show have also become some of the richest talk show hosts. As a result, it makes sense that people want to host The Daily Show, even though they may have to deal with terrible guests and cope with criticism.
At one point in the past, there were rumors that Hasan Minhaj would be tapped to host The Daily Show. However, that never happened. Hasan later revealed that a scandal resulted in him losing out on hosting The Daily Show.

Hasan Minhaj: ‘I Had the Daily Show Gig,’ Then Lost It Amid Stand-Up Act Backlash — ‘That’s Showbiz’
Hasan Minhaj has confirmed that he was was going to be named The Daily Show‘s new full-time host last year, but the controversy about his stand-up comedy act — namely, embellished tales told therein — cost him the job.
“We were in talks, and I had the gig, and we were pretty much good to go,” Minhaj says in a new Esquire profile. But in the wake of a now-infamous New Yorker article, published in September 2023, “It went away,” he affirmed. “That’s part of showbiz.”

Throughout the six-episode run of Netflix’s Everybody’s in L.A., John Mulaney’s comedian guests kept trying to find ways to describe the live talk show’s chaotic-bordering-on-surreal atmosphere. “I feel like this entire show is a Banksy!” a confused Jon Stewart suggested. Nikki Glaser perhaps explained it best, by telling Mulaney, “It’s like an inside joke that only you are in on.”

Can experience generating viral moments on late night TV translate to a political campaign? The Biden-Harris reelection effort is betting that it can.
President Biden’s 2024 campaign operation has hired late night TV veteran Andy Crystal as its research director, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Crystal was most recently lead research producer on the Apple TV+ series The Problem with Jon Stewart, and before that worked as a senior news producer on the Netflix series Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj.
Crystal is expected to combine the traditional campaign research approach with creative tactics like viral videos and investigative reporting meant to cut through the clutter of social platforms, per campaign officials.
It’s a skillset that Jim Margolis, the executive producer and showrunner of Patriot Act, believes will translate well.
“Andy’s vision, vast intellect and passion for finding and reporting important stories drove our most memorable episodes,” Margolis says.

To the average person, the New Yorker’s expose on Hasan Minhaj’s fabrications in his stand-up routine may be shocking. But three former “Daily Show” staffers who spoke exclusively with TheWrap said they were not surprised.
“There was always this suspicion that maybe this guy’s full of s–t. Maybe he’s exaggerating,” one former staffer told TheWrap, noting that Minhaj’s stories in his stand-up always seemed “too perfectly set up.”
The admissions by Minhaj that several incident of racism didn’t happen to him, or didn’t happen the way he recounted, should disqualify him to host the Comedy Central news-comedy show, they said.
“It’s extremely dangerous to cry wolf on racism, especially if you want to be the host of a very influential, politically-driven show,” a former “Daily Show” staffer said.

On the heels of wrapping up his week of guest-hosting at “The Daily Show,” Hasan Minhaj is set to host the Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday, and he’s looking forward to shifting from political humor to entertainment-focused jokes.
“I’m really excited because I’ve spent so many years working in political satire. So whenever people usually see me host these types of events, I’m making fun of the president, the administration, the debt ceiling, some autocrat or dictator or analyzing or giving my take on some sort of geopolitical disaster,” he told TheWrap in a recent interview. “In this gig, the stakes are so much lower and it means that I can just have so much more fun and it can be silly and goofy and irreverent and wacky, which is awesome.”

Former “Daily Show” senior correspondent Hasan Minhaj is “pumped” to return to the late night satirical news program starting on Monday.
“It feels like a homecoming for me. It really was my comedy undergrad,” the two-time Peabody Award-winning comedian told TheWrap during an interview about his upcoming hosting stint for the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards.
“I owe everything in my career to that show. It was the show that gave me health insurance, it was the show that gave me an opportunity to work with Jewish Yoda Jon Stewart. I got to work with Trevor Noah who was absolutely incredible and what he brought to the show was so different, and the thing that I certainly hope for it is I hope I bring something new to the show.”
Minhaj is one of multiple rotating guest hosts as the “Daily Show” team searches for a successor to Noah, who left after seven years.

Conan O’Brien’s tenure at TBS might be coming to an end but the comedian, creator, and host of “Conan” is setting his sights on a new television show for the HBO Max streaming service.
It’s unclear what O’Brien’s HBO Max show will be like. WarnerMedia stated last November that the comedian’s “Conan Without Borders” shows, where he travels to other countries, would continue alongside his upcoming HBO Max series, which suggests that his new show will be something else entirely.

Mulaney revealed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” that he had been investigated by the Secret Service earlier in the year following a joke he made on “Saturday Night Live” about the death of Julius Caesar. Though Mulaney did not reference President Donald Trump, or any other contemporary politicians, he noted that the joke gained traction on social media and resulted in an unexpected meeting with Secret Service agents.
“The joke was about it was a leap year had been started by Julius Caesar to correct the calendar, and another thing that happened with Caesar was that he was stabbed to death by a bunch of senators cause he went crazy. And I said, ‘That’s an interesting thing that could happen,'” Mulaney told Kimmel. “A lot of...

Hilary Swank, who starred in Netflix’s sci-fi drama “Away” earlier in the year, reminisced about the show in an Instagram post on Tuesday following its cancellation by Netflix.
“Love and hope will always remain my ‘North Star.’ It was an incredible journey my compadres,” Swank said on Instagram. “And thank you to all my extraordinary followers who watched and supported our beautiful show. Wish we were showing you Mars. Until the next one.”
Swank starred in the series as Emma Green, a NASA astronaut who led the first astronaut expedition to Mars. The show also starred Josh Charles, Vivian Wu, and Mark Ivanir, among others.
“Away” premiered on Netflix on September 4. The show received mixed reviews from critics, including IndieWire’s Ben Travers, who, despite praising its polished look, referred to “Away” as a “stock family drama” that failed to capitalize on its sci-fi elements in his grade C review.

Netflix has pulled the plug on its upcoming Turkish drama series “If Only” after the government there refused to permit filming because the show features a gay character. The streamer opted to cancel the entire production rather than heed the complaints of the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which is increasingly cracking down on freedom of expression, IndieWire has confirmed.
Ece Yorenc, a screenwriter who had penned a script for the upcoming series, said the show was canceled last week on the eve of filming because of the government’s stance
“Due to a gay character, permission to film the series was not granted and this is very frightening for the future,” she told the Turkish film news website Altyazi Fasikul, as translated by the Financial Times.
Reached for comment, a Netflix spokesperson offered the following statement:
“Netflix remains deeply committed to our Turkish members and the creative community in Turkey.

It wasn’t too long ago that it was easier to name late night talk show hosts named Jimmy than it was to name any who were women or people of color. But as television has expanded to more networks and streaming platforms and talk shows have seen a political boom influenced by Jon Stewart‘s celebrated tenure on “The Daily Show,” we might see more non-white-guy nominees for Best Variety Talk Series than ever before.
The tip of the spear might actually be the host who took over for Stewart on “The Daily Show.” South African comedian Trevor Noah took the reins in 2015, but his version of the program wasn’t nominated for Best Variety Talk Series until 2018. It was nominated again in 2019, and this year our odds say it could even be a threat to win, especially after it transformed itself during the coronavirus pandemic; it was one...

Writers Guild of America leaders are seeking major gains in writer pay for comedy-variety shows on streaming platforms.
“Series like ‘Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj,’ ‘I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson’ and ‘The Iliza Shlesinger Sketch Show’ provide streaming platforms like Netflix with different types of entertaining content, which in turns helps those companies attract new subscribers,” the message from the WGA’s negotiating committee said.
“Despite this growth, terms for comedy-variety programs produced for subscriber streaming platforms are entirely negotiable, which means there are no WGA minimums. As a result, companies are free to pay writers as little as they can get away with, resulting in some of them not even earning enough over a season to qualify for WGA health insurance. In addition, residuals on a hit show barely amount to a few hundred dollars.”

Netflix has removed an episode of “Designated Survivor” from its service in Turkey over complaints from Turkish censors that the episode painted a fictional version of the country’s president in an unflattering light.
“Following a demand from the Turkish regulator, we have removed one episode of ‘Designated Survivor’ from Netflix in Turkey only, to comply with local law. It is still available on our service in the rest of the world,” a Netflix spokesperson told TheWrap.
The episode “Family Ties,” which premiered on the streamer in 2018, depicts a fictional version of a Turkish president named Fatih Turan played by actor Troy Caylak (pictured above). The character meets resistance from Turkey’s opposition while attending a Nato summit in the U.S., where he interacts with the fictional U.S. president Tom Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland).

Keeping yourself up to date on contenders in just about any Emmy Award category would usually require a whole host of subscriptions to any number of streaming services. But that’s just not the case when it comes to Outstanding Variety Talk Series.
It’s not that the contenders are any less diverse than in other categories. It’s that in order to sample some of the best and brightest bits from any given variety talk series in one place away from their home networks, all a person needs is relatively stable internet (or wireless) connection and access to YouTube.
Almost certainly a reflection of our ever-changing media landscape, networks, whether they’re cable, broadcast, or streaming, make large portions of their variety talk series available on YouTube, an easy conduit to virality and a brilliant way to be seen by audiences that are time-shifting their viewing habits more often than not.

Netflix has extended its original order for Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, greenlighting seven new episodes to bring the first season’s total to 39. The first new episode will launch on Sunday, March 29, with a new one going live weekly after that.

Netflix has given Hasan Minhaj’s “Patriot Act” a seven-episode extension, bringing the total episode count of Season 1 up to 39 from its original 32-episode order. The comedy talk show, which returns with its regular weekly schedule on March 29, is also changing showrunners again.
Prashanth Venkataramanujam, who co-created and executive produces the series along with Minhaj, is also taking on the role of showrunner for the new episodes. He will be the third person to hold the showrunner’s role since the series premiered in October 2018.
Original showrunner Jim Margolis stepped down in May of 2018 and was replaced by Steve Bodow, a former executive producer of “The Daily Show,” from which Minhaj is also an alum.

In a rare move of transparency, Netflix has released a list of movies and television projects that have been banned from streaming on its platform over the last five years (via Variety). The list includes nine projects, from the much-publicized episode of “Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj” that got removed in Saudi Arabia to Stanley Kubrick’s war epic “Full Metal Jacket” being taken off Netflix in Vietnam. Netflix says these nine film and TV shows are the only times it has ever removed content because of government censorship demands since it began streaming in 2007.
A statement on the report from Netflix reads: “We offer creators the ability to reach audiences all around the world. In some cases we’ve also been forced to remove specific titles or episodes of titles in specific countries due to government takedown demands.”

Netflix disclosed for the first time the movies and TV shows it has pulled from its streaming service at the behest of governments, as part of a new transparency report.
The nine titles, which Netflix removed between 2015-2020, include a single episode of “Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj” pulled in Saudi Arabia after the government demanded removal of the segment that was critical of the regime. The company said the nine cases are the only times it has ever yanked content because of censorship demands since it began streaming in 2007.
Other titles purged by Netflix in individual countries include five in Singapore alone: “The Last Hangover,” “The Last Temptation of Christ,” “Cooking on High,” “The Legend of 420” and “Disjointed.” In 2017, Netflix pulled George Romero’s horror classic “Night of the Living Dead” in Germany; the film is banned in the country.

Netflix has removed an episode of “Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj” from its service in Saudi Arabia after the country’s government flagged the episode for being in violation of its anti-cyber crime law.
Saudi Arabia’s Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) flagged the episode, titled “Saudi Arabia,” which it said was in violation of the country’s anti-cybercrime law.
In the episode, which was the second one of the series and aired shortly after the death of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Minhaj was critical of the Saudi government, in particular, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.
