February on the Criterion Channel Includes Argentine Noir, Joan Micklin Silver, Chantal Akerman & More
Image
I consider myself something like a student, autodidact or otherwise, of cinema and––even still, must confess––had not ever grasped the concept of Argentine noir. Credit to Criterion Channel, who’ll expand my horizons with February’s program (concisely titled “Argentine Noir”) that includes one known title––Pierre Chenal’s Native Son, an Argentine film from a French director adapting an American novel about the African-American experience in Chicago––and five I look forward to discovering. Retrospective-wise, their wide-reaching Claudette Colbert program could double as a lesson in Old Hollywood, between Capra, Stahl, DeMille, Lubitsch, Sirk, and Sturges. February, of course, brings Black History Month and Valentine’s Day: the former engenders a series featuring films such as Nothing but a Man, Portrait of Jason, and Losing Ground; the latter brings “New York Love Stories,” from Carol to Crossing Delancey to, curiously, Annie Hall, which likely would not have...

Standing At 2’1”, The World’s Smallest Woman Meets The World’s Tallest Woman At 7′ 1” For The First Time
Image
Last week, Jyoti Amge, the world’s shortest woman at 2’1″, appeared on This Morning Show in the U.K. to celebrate the 20th annual World Record Day. Jyoti has held the record since 2011, when she turned 18, and she says it has always been a dream come true.

In her interview with Cat Deely and Dermot O’Leary, Jyoti candidly discussed her challenges and accomplishments. Her translator, Amol Pangul, shared that “the best part of her life was being the Guinness World Record holder, which gave her confidence.”

Because of the Guinness record, she grew her acting career, starring in the fourth season of American Horror Story: Freak Show, where she appeared as Ma Petite.

Despite her many accomplishments, Jyoti still faces everyday struggles, such as needing help from friends or family whenever she leaves the house and navigating the challenge of dressing like an adult while only fitting into toddler sizes.

American Horror Story: What Happened To Jyoti Amge After Freak Show
Image
Indian actress Jyoti Kisange Amge gained fame for portraying Ma Petite in the fourth season of American Horror Story, though this isn't her only achievement. Among the many colorful characters in the 4th season of AHS, Ma Petite was impossible to miss. Unlike many of the other carnival performers, Jyoti Amge's Ma Petite required no prosthetic effects. Her stage act in Freak Show's traveling carnival focused on her size, and many viewers were instantly intrigued at whom the actor playing Ma Petite was, since she was clearly the same height as her character and an adult, rather than child, performer.

Ma Pettie was played by actress Jyoti Amge who, according to the Limca Book of Records and the Guinness Book of Records, is the world's smallest living woman. She was declared so on her 18th birthday in December of 2011, standing at a height of 2 feet and 0.6 inches (62.8 centimeters). Reportedly,...

Jaya Bachchan, renowned for her work in Indian cinema and politics, is celebrating her 76th birthday on Tuesday. Born as Jaya Bhaduri in a Bengali family, Jaya’s father, Tarun Kumar Bhaduri, was a well-known journalist and a poet.

After completing her education, Jaya attended the Film and Television Institute of India (Ftii), Pune, where she honed her acting skills.

John Corbett’s Best Roles: ‘Raising Helen,’ ‘Serendipity,’ ‘Sex and the City,’ ‘To All the Boys,’ and More
Image
With his work spanning decades of TV and film, and a warm presence that’s equally radiant across screens big and small, John Corbett has made an illustrious career from being “that guy” in “that rom-com.”

The 62-year-old actor is perhaps best known for his role as Aidan Shaw: Carrie’s second choice on the ’90s smash hit “Sex and the City” and the second-most controversial character in its contemporary Max spinoff, “And Just Like That…”

Corbett is equally celebrated for his breakout film performance as the leading man in indie darling “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” Nia Vardalos’ treasured love story from 2002 tells the tale of a sheltered woman and her enormous, meddlesome family introducing Corbett’s dashing fiance character, the magnanimous school teacher Ian Miller, to countless kooky relatives, the Greek Orthodox Church, and the healing power of Windex.

Those two star-making moments for Corbett re-collided this...

The Night They Raided Minsky’s, from 1968, is listed as Friedkin’s fictional description of the 1925 invention of the striptease. Well, burly-kew may not have seen the footlights until that time frame, but I’ll bet that the striptease was actually invented shortly after they came up with clothing.

The burlesque shows staged by the Minsky brothers were roundly criticized by decent folk, while famous poets, pundits and publishers whiled away the hours of Prohibition with live nude girls – well, nearly nude – up on the stage. The Minskys were routinely raided by the cops, and the whole burlesque business was shut down in the mid-1930s amid public outcry whipped up by...

There Are Beautiful, Heartbreaking Movies About Childhood — and Then There’s ‘Petite Maman’
Image
There is what you might call a “spoiler” in the title of Céline Sciamma’s new movie, a key to unlocking her look at childhood that’s hiding in plain sight. The French filmmaker’s follow-up to Portrait of a Lady on Fire begins not with love, but with death: An eight-year-old named Nelly (Joséphine Sanz) has just lost her elderly grandmother. Her mom (Nina Meurisse) is packing up everything in the house she grew up in, located on the edge of a forest. Dad (Stéphane Varupenne) is helping out the best he can.

I opened the door to my home and heard my wife crying. Out loud. As she is not one who finds herself openly weeping all that often, I was concerned. With tears streaming down her face she said, “Sidney Poitier died.” She did not know him personally, had never met him, but, for her, it was as if a close relative had been struck down. Browsing through social media posts, it is apparent that many feel that way. My wife has met a number of celebrities during her time in Los Angeles, but never Poitier. That will always live within her on the minus side of her life’s ledger.

Toronto Festival Unveils ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ As Opening-Night Premiere, Zhang Yimou’s ‘One Second’ As Closer; Check Out First Slated Films
Image
Toronto Film Festival organizers declared two weeks ago they will be welcoming back in-person audiences for a fest that will run from September 9-18. This after Canada made an exemption to allow for the National Hockey League playoffs to happen in country, and more recently that the Toronto Blue Jays will resume playing in the ballpark on Blue Jay Way by the end of the month. The fest also allowed fans to wet their beaks with a few films that were set.

On Tuesday morning, Tff unveiled its first big batch of premieres and galas. Co-heads Joana Vicente and Cameron Bailey have set Dear Evan Hansen at the Opening Night Gala Presentation, with the Stephen Chbosky-directed adaptation of the Broadway hit to premiere September 9 at Roy Thomson Hall.

The festival will close with the Zhang Yimou-directed One Second. That film was originally due to play in 2019 Berlinale, but was...

Brie Larson in Captain Marvel (2019)
ReFrame Stamp Affixed On Record 26 Films For 2019
Brie Larson in Captain Marvel (2019)
The ReFrame coalition has awarded 26 feature films released in 2019 with its ReFrame Stamp, which recognizes the top 100-grossing gender-balanced narrative and animated features. The list, which grew from 20 total films that earned the stamp a year ago, includes Booksmart, Captain Marvel, Harriet, Hustlers and Oscar Best Picture nominee Little Women.

This reflects gains for women in the important roles of director, department heads, and women of color leads and co-leads. With an aim to increase the number of women of all backgrounds working in film, TV, and media, the ReFrame Stamp, which is showcased in end credits and appears on IMDb, serves as a mark of distinction for projects that have demonstrated success in gender-balanced hiring. Additional points are awarded to content that has women of color in key positions.

This year’s list included 12 women directors (12 percent) in the top 100 films at the box office compared to 4 in 2018, with...

Issa Rae on Her On-Screen Romances: ‘There Are People Who Don’t Procreate With Just White People’
Issa Rae
Issa Rae co-stars in two romantic movies with leading men of color this year: “The Photograph,” a drama with Lakeith Stanfield, and the upcoming rom-com “The Lovebirds” with Kumail Nanjiani. Rae said the former — written and directed by Stella Meghie — echoes the nostalgia of one of her favorite films centered on black love, “Love & Basketball.” The latter features a coupling she hasn’t seen since Denzel Washington romanced Sarita Choudhury in 1991’s “Mississippi Masala.”

“Every time there’s an interracial romance, it feels like it centers on whiteness, and it doesn’t have to,” Rae told Variety. She added, with her signature deadpan, “Just so you know, there are people who don’t procreate with just white people.”

The star and creator of the HBO comedy “Insecure” is certainly keeping busy. In addition to starring in movies, like “The Hate U Give” and “Little,” she executive produces shows like “A Black Lady Sketch Show,...

Natalie Portman Responds To Rose McGowan Oscars Cape Criticism, Mentions Harvey Weinstein
Natalie Portman at an event for The Oscars (2020)
Natalie Portman has fired back at activist Rose McGowan, who blasted her for faux activism stemming from the gesture of wearing a cape at the Academy Awards featuring the names of snubbed female directors.

McGowan said in a Facebook post Tuesday that Portman’s gesture was hollow and asked her to “stop pretending you’re some kind of champion for anything other than yourself.” McGowan said Portman has “worked with two female directors in your very long career- one of them was you.”

Portman’s Oscars outfit featured a cape embroidered with the names of Greta Gerwig (Little Women”), Lulu Wang (The Farewell), Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers), Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), Mati Diop (Atlantics), Melina Matsoukas (Queen & Slim), Alma Har’el (Honey Boy) and Céline Sciamma (Portrait of a Lady on Fire).

“Some thoughts on Natalie Portman and her Oscar ‘protest,’” McGowan’s Facebook post said. “The...

Timothée Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan Reunite For Wes Anderson Film The French Dispatch
Indie-movie-lovers, rejoice, because Wes Anderson's new film The French Dispatch premieres in theaters this Summer. With an all-star cast, including Timothée Chalamet (The King), Saoirse Ronan (Little Women), Elisabeth Moss (Us), and Tilda Swinton (Uncut Gems), we are positive that Anderson's latest film will be phenomenal.

Set to premiere on July 24, The French Dispatch will be Anderson's first film set in Paris, where the writer-director currently lives. The premise is shrouded in mystery, but IndieWire reports that the official synopsis is a "love letter to journalists set at an outpost of an American newspaper in 20th Century Paris." When speaking to French publication Charente Libre in April 2019, Anderson said that "the story is not easy to explain," adding, "[It's about an] American journalist based in France [who] creates his magazine. It is more a portrait of this man, of this journalist who fights to write what he wants to write. It's not a...

It was a big night in Hollywood as the 92nd Annual Academy Awards were announced from the heart of Los Angeles at the Dolby Theatre. There were plenty of surprises in store leading up to the big reveal for Best Picture of 2020. Joker and 1917 were the front runners, with Parasite a long shot favorite, but in the end Bong Joon Ho's Parasite swept up at this year's Oscars with Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Foreign Language Film.

This year's Oscars offered plenty of unexpected twists and turns, though most of the awards played out just as many suspected and predicted they would.

The Academy Awards went without a host for the second time, following last year's first hostless Oscars in over thirty years. There were some big presenters on hand to handle the show, and present the night's coveted award to each of the winners.

Coronavirus Crisis Forces China to Cancel Dolittle, 1917 and Jojo Rabbit Releases
Robert Downey Jr., Emma Thompson, Marion Cotillard, Octavia Spencer, John Cena, Selena Gomez, Rami Malek, Kumail Nanjiani, and Tom Holland in Le Voyage du Dr Dolittle (2020)
The coronavirus crisis is continuing to have a major effect on Hollywood as several major titles have scrapped release plans in China. Second only to the U.S., China has become one of the most important movie markets in the world, with studios relying heavily on box office dollars from the country to help turn movies into hits. In some cases, China can even rescue movies that may otherwise have turned into total flops. Unfortunately, a few big movies are going to have to sacrifice box office dollars in the Middle Kingdom in the interest of safety.

According to a new report, Dolittle, 1917, Jojo Rabbit and LIttle Women have all sidelined release plans in China. All four movies were set to be released in the country at various points this month. Interestingly, last year's Hellboy remake, which went on to become one of the year's biggest bombs, was also finally...

Oscars Analysis: What Saturday's '1917,' 'Ford v Ferrari' and 'Little Women' Wins Mean
Sam Mendes at an event for Les noces rebelles (2008)
Saturday night was the award season's version of the presidential election season's upcoming Super Tuesday: A storm of results came in all at once, offering — or at least appearing to offer — a bit of clarity about the overall race.

The biggest deal, by far, was the 72nd Directors Guild of America Awards, where the prize for outstanding directorial achievement in motion pictures was won by 1917's Sam Mendes. ‘For Sama’ Directors Waad Al-Kateab And Edward Watts On Feeling Like “Little Fish” In Big Oscar Pond
Feras Fayyad
When the Oscar nominations were announced earlier this month, two documentaries about Syria made it through: Feras Fayyad’s The Cave, about a courageous woman doctor running a subterranean hospital outside Damascus, and For Sama, directed by Waad Al-Kateab and Edward Watts, the story of Al-Kateab’s effort to raise her baby daughter in Aleppo as the city was systematically destroyed.

“Before the revolution there’s no Syrian film that made it to the [Oscars’] final five,” Al-Kateab notes. “And for the Academy people to [nominate] these two films, it was for us the best thing that could ever happen.”

Watts adds, “When we were making the film, we were told so often that people didn’t care about Syria anymore, that everyone was exhausted by it. And so to see at this level people engaging and supporting two films about Syria, it gives you hope that actually people do care about...
