'The Cleaning Lady’ Fans Get a Win After Devastating Cancellation Blow
Image
The Cleaning Lady was recently cancelled after four seasons on Fox. During its run on the network, the drama series had new episodes available to stream on Hulu, a day after their TV debut. All four seasons are still available to stream on Hulu. However, more people will now be able to access the entire series as the complete season has also become available to stream on a new platform. While Season 4 aired, The Cleaning Lady Seasons 1 – 3 were available to stream on HBO Max, but the fourth season was exclusive to Hulu. The streamer has now revealed that Season 4 is finally joining the rest, giving Max subscribers access to Thony De La Rosa's complete story, as it were.

Inspired by the 2017 Argentine television series La chica que limpia, The Cleaning Lady follows Thony De La Rosa, a Cambodian surgeon who immigrates to the US seeking medical care for her ailing son.

Image
Following the news that Fox had canceled the crime drama The Cleaning Ladyin early June, the show, starring Elodie Yung, is finding worldwide success on streaming. Per FlixPatrol, The Cleaning Lady has an average ranking of 7.9 among global audiences.

The Cleaning Lady currently sits in the No. 9 spot in HBO’s Top 10 TV shows as of June 15. The series concluded its fourth season on June 3, and just days later, Fox revealed it would not be getting a fifth.

Yung starred as Thony De La Rosa, a former surgeon who works as a “cleaning lady” in Las Vegas so that she can remain in the city for treatment for a medical disorder. Why Fox Canceled The Cleaning Lady After Four Seasons
Image
Fox crime drama series "The Cleaning Lady" aired its season 4 finale on June 3, 2025. The series' fans didn't have long to savor the episode or guess what would come next, because mere days later, on June 6, Fox canceled the series, citing low ratings.

In fact, ratings for "The Cleaning Lady" had been declining consistently. The first season generally enjoyed around three million viewers (give or take) per episode back in 2022, while by the fourth season, it was down to one million. It's possible that the decline just has to do with fewer people watching all network TV, but the end result is the same.

Created by Miranda Kwok, "The Cleaning Lady" is a remake of an Argentine TV series, "La Chica que Limpia" (Spanish for "The Cleaning Lady"). The series starred Elodie Yung as Thony De La Rosa, a Cambodian-Filipino surgeon living in Las Vegas. On an expired visa and with an ill young son,...

The Cleaning Lady Canceled By Fox After Season 4
Image
Fox's crime drama and sleeper hit The Cleaning Lady has been canceled after four seasons. Inspired by the Argentinian series La Chica Que Limpia, the show debuted on Fox in January 2022, and focused on Thony De La Rosa, a Cambodian-Filipino former surgeon who becomes a cleaner and doctor for a prominent crime organization in Las Vegas, while pursuing a liver-saving bone marrow treatment for her young son. The show's first season averaged around three million viewers, but this had dropped to one million by The Cleaning Lady season 4.

Per Deadline, The Cleaning Lady has been canceled by Fox just three months after season 4 premiered. Despite a series of creative shakeups for The Cleaning Lady season 4, ratings were ultimately low, and the show aired its final episode on the network on June 3. It was canceled alongside other struggling shows, including Alert, The Great North, and Accused.

What This Means For The...

Fox has just decided to not go ahead with its police procedural series Alert: Missing Persons Unit and crime drama series The Cleaning Lady. The network announced this Friday that The Cleaning Lady’s recent Season 4 finale will be its last episode and it’s a similar case for Alert: Missing Persons Unit.

Based on the Argentine TV series titled La Chica que Limpia, the crime drama series was adapted for Fox by Miranda Kwok. It follows Thony De La Rosa, a brilliant Cambodian doctor who has to come to the United States to get her sick son treated but things don’t go to plan forcing her to go into hiding and start working as a cleaning lady for an organized criminal gang.

The Cleaning Lady Season 4 aired its finale episode on June 3, which has sadly now become its final episode.

The Cleaning Lady's Renewal Fate Revealed Following Season 4 Finale
Image
The future of The Cleaning Lady on Fox has been confirmed. It's not good news for fans hoping to see the show return for a fifth season.

Per Variety, it's been revealed that Fox has canceled The Cleaning Lady after four seasons. The news comes days after the fourth season finale. It's one of two shows to get the boot, joined by Alert: Missing Persons. Both shows recently wrapped up their newest seasons, with the latter consisting of three. This also follows the network's previous cancelation of Rescue: Hi-Surf, which was axed after a single season.

Doc was given a Season 2 renewal while massive four-season renewals were given to the animated shows The Simpsons, Bob's Burgers, and Family Guy. American Dad! has also returned to Fox after a hiatus of several years. Additionally, there will be some new shows coming to the network to fill the void of the canceled shows.

‘Cleaning Lady,’ ‘Alert: Missing Persons Unit’ Canceled at Fox
Image
Both “The Cleaning Lady” and “Alert: Missing Persons Unit” have been canceled at Fox, Variety has learned.

“The Cleaning Lady” had aired four seasons at the broadcast network, while “Alert: Missing Persons Unit” had aired three. Both shows wrapped up with their respective season finales in the past two weeks.

Fox announced their fall schedule going into their upfront presentation to advertisers in May, with both “Cleaning Lady” and “Alert” in limbo at that time. The two shows now join fellow Fox drama “Rescue: Hi-Surf” on the chopping block.

Previously, Fox gave out massive four-season renewals for “The Simpsons,” “Bob’s Burgers” and “Family Guy,” while also bringing “American Dad” back to the network. The medical drama “Doc” has also been renewed for a second season, while Fox has picked up the one-hour comedy “Best Medicine,” dramatic thriller “Memory of a Killer,” and the multi-part scripted event “The Faithful.”

Greta Molas, writer of Argentina’s “La chica que limpia” which inspired Fox’s breakout hit “The Cleaning Lady,” has signed to develop a new series, “Escorts,” with Madrid’s Hispánica Audiovisual and Uma Films, based out of Córdoba in Argentina.

A social-issue city underbelly thriller, “Escorts” turns on Mare, a young medical resident who attends an escort, helping her home. The incident opens up for Mare an unknown and tempting world.

The sex workers Mare meets, however, are planning to leave a well known agency where they are exploited in order to set up their own business. “It is not going to be that simple and terror begins to show its face,” the synopsis runs.

Just as in “La Chica que Limpia,” where the protagonist turns to crime in order to cover the costs of care for her ill son in the absence of social welfare support, “Escorts” is...

Did 90210 Begin as an Attempt to Adapt Degrassi for U.S. Audiences?
Image
Aaron Spelling did not try to license Degrassi Junior High before creating Beverly Hills 90210. Degrassi Junior High/Degrassi High was a popular Canadian prime time soap opera about high school students. The soap opera format of Degrassi Junior High/Degrassi High had a major influence on shows like Beverly Hills 90210, but there was no direct connection between the shows.

TV Urban Legend: Aaron Spelling tried to license Degrassi Junior High/Degrassi High for the United States television market and created Beverly Hills 90210 instead when his licensing attempt failed.

Television history is filled with examples of American producers adapting hit shows from other countries into successful shows here, like All in the Family (Till Death Us Do Part), Sanford and Son (Steptoe and Son), and Three's Company (Man About the House). That tradition continues to this day with hit shows like Ghosts (based on the British series of...

‘The Cleaning Lady’ Creator Miranda Kwok Upped To Showrunner Alongside Melissa Carter
Image
Exclusive: Miranda Kwok, developer and executive producer of Fox’s drama series The Cleaning Lady, has been promoted to showrunner alongside executive producer/showrunner Melissa Carter, who will remain in her post under a new overall deal she signed with series producer Warner Bros TV several months ago. The shift from one to two showrunners will take place at the beginning of production on episode 207 of the drama’s upcoming second season.

Kwok’s promotion follows a natural progression for creators with limited prior experience who land a series on the air. When she created The Cleaning Lady based on the Argentinian format La Chica Que Limpia, Kwok had been on Wbtv-produced The 100 for four years, rising to supervising producer, having been a staff writer on Spartacus: Blood & Sand before that.

She was paired with Carter, an experienced showrunner on Wbtv’s talent roster, who was tapped to run the new series.

Fox's The Cleaning Lady: Grade It!
Image
Thony De La Rosa, the woman at the center of Fox’s The Cleaning Lady, is excellent with a sponge and rag — but she appears to be creating a mess of her own that all the paper towels in Las Vegas won’t wipe away.

During Monday’s series premiere of the freshman drama, which is adapted from the 2017 Argentinian series La chica que limpia, we’re introduced to Thony (Daredevil‘s Elodie Yung) and her sister-in-law Fiona (As the World Turns‘ Martha Millan), both undocumented immigrants who work on the clean-up staffs for various nightlife events in Vegas. The women also live together,...

‘The Cleaning Lady’ Is a Rocky but Moving Look at Immigration and Crime: TV Review
Image
Credit where due: There’s something admirable about “The Cleaning Lady’s” attempt to use the tools of genre to illuminate the plight of undocumented immigrants. Fox’s new drama series, based on Argentina’s “La Chica Que Limpia,” centers on Thony (Élodie Yung), a Cambodian doctor who, having emigrated to the U.S., finds herself ensnared in the world of organized crime. Soon enough, she’s balancing trying to find medical care for her son — the reason she came to the States in the first place — with life as a cleaner picking up the aftermath of mob activity.

The situations Thony goes on to find herself in are outsized to the point of ludicrous, and the writing and direction doesn’t always help matters. In one sequence, a raid on undocumented domestic workers is set to Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun.” Elsewhere, the hunky law-enforcement...

Paola Suárez, ‘La Chica Que Limpia’ Producer, Dies at 41
Image
Paola Suárez, producer of the breakout Argentine mob drama “La Chica que limpia,” died on Sunday after suddenly collapsing in Córdoba, Argentina, at the age of 41.

Her death comes just months after Fox gave a series greenlight in May to “The Cleaning Lady,” a U.S. version of “La Chica que limpia” created by Miranda Kwok, which is scheduled to bow as a midseason entry in the 2021-22 season. “La Muchacha que limpia,” a Mexican makeover produced by WarnerMedia Latin America and Btf Media, aired on HBO Latin America from June 25.

Sporting glasses and a huge grin, Suárez embodied the huge energies of a young generation of Latin American film producers who took Buenos Aires’ Ventana Sur by storm from its second edition in 2010, turning a sales market into an informal international co-production meet attracting thousands.

Suárez didn’t have far to travel, coming from Córdoba, Argentina’s second city,...

Based on the Argentine series La Chica que Limpia, The Cleaning Lady centers on a whip-smart doctor (Marvel’s Daredevil‘s Élodie Yung) who comes to the U.S. for a medical treatment to save her ailing son. Both “9-1-1” and “9-1-1: Lone Star” were renewed, as was the medical drama “The Resident.” “9-1-1” will lead off Fox Monday’s this fall, while “Lone Star” is being held for midseason. “The Resident” is set to kick off Tuesdays for network in the 8 p.m. slot. All three shows debuted at midseason during the 2020-2021 broadcast season. In addition, animated comedy “The Great North” has been renewed for Season 3 ahead of the Season 2 premiere.
