The 2010s and 2020s saw a surge of American children's media that put queerness front and center. Take the work of N.D. Stevenson, such as the Netflix series "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power" and the animated film "Nimona," based on his graphic novel. From "Steven Universe" to "The Owl House," cartoons have gotten a lot gayer in the last decade.
And it is almost precisely a decade because Nickelodeon's "The Legend of Korra" is the show that broke down the dam in 2014. In the show's fourth and final season, Avatar Korra (Janet Varney) falls in love with her best friend, Asami Sato (Seychelle Gabriel). A sequel to "Avatar: The Last Airbender," "The Legend of Korra" is set in a fantasy world where people can bend one of the four elements. Korra, as the reincarnation of world defender the Avatar, can bend all four. If kids can accept a world that fantastical,...

Animation has come a long way since its inception. The meticulous hand-drawn frames of yore have given way to digital techniques, and things like ink and paint have been replaced by Cintiq art tablets. However, one thing has remained the same: every animated work draws inspiration from something else.
Today, there are more remarkable animated shows to see than ever before. Disney and Hanna-Barbera no longer control the narrative. Now, audiences can find something to pique any interest. Shows like Amphibia and The Owl House appeal to the whimsical whims of fantasy fans. Anyone with an itch for something more mysterious can turn to Infinity Train and Gravity Falls. For comedy, Chowder and Regular Show are always available. All these shows seem wildly different, but they’re all connected to the same source. More specifically, their creators were all protégés of Thurop Von Orman and J. G. Quintel’s Cartoon Network show,...

Matthew Rhys is moving to New England and becoming a mayor — on television, of course. The Perry Masonand The Americans star is set to lead AppleTV+'s new, supernatural series Widow's Bay, from accomplished and prolific writer Katie Dippold, who's penned such films as The Heat and Ghostbusters, and also wrote 31 episodes of the iconic sitcom Parks and Recreation. Also involved in the stellar team? Director Hiro Murai, whom many know from his breathtaking work on Atlanta, Station Eleven, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
Anyone else allowing themselves to get a little bit excited about this one?
According to Deadline, the new series has a decidedly supernatural bent — appropriate given Dippold's last feature script was Disney's The Haunted Mansion. The show takes place on a mysterious and perhaps cursed New England island with aspirations of Nantucket-level tourism grandeur. However, its superstitious citizens — led by a mayor (Rhys) who doesn't exactly...

The Owl House ran for three seasons on Disney Channel, during which time the relationship between human teenager Luz Noceda (Sarah-Nicole Robles) and child-like demon King (Alex Hirsch) was always central. However, how a certain piece of Boiling Isles lore connects to their dynamic is never explicitly clarified in the show. The Owl House follows Luz as she stumbles into a magical otherworld and settles into the Owl House, where she trains as a witch under the tutelage of chaotic witch Eda Clawthorne (Wendie Malick).
When they all meet, Eda already has King, a somewhat mysterious creature who believes he was once the king of all demons, in her care. However, King is objectively still a kid, and he and Luz develop a best friend/sibling relationship, while Eda comes to view them as her surrogate kids. However, while Luz was largely a fully-fledged witch and King was revealed to...

The Owl House was a triumph among Disney fans new and old, drawing upon the style of previous hit animated TV shows while offering something new, with many standout episodes. The adventures of human Luz Noceda (Sarah-Nicole Robles), her witch mentor Eda the Owl Lady (Wendie Malick), and demon best friend King (Alex Hirsch) exhibit plenty of hilariously absurd humor, all the while gradually assembling a profound story of self-acceptance and standing up for what's right. Creator Dana Terrace's kooky and smart world-building shows no bounds, while the supporting cast provides the show with strong friendship and romance subplots.
The Owl House was prematurely canceled after season 3, wrapping things up with a shorter final season, which nonetheless did justice to Luz and everyone else's character arcs and the vibrant setting. This is also a TV show that makes the case for filler episodes, and the one-off adventures of The Owl House...

Disney has produced plenty of great animated TV shows over the years, from the 1980s to the 2020s. Starting with shows like Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers and DuckTales, Disney reinvented some of their classic characters for TV. Later, they started developing original TV concepts that didn't rely on existing characters, but these shows became iconic in their own right.
Disney has never had quite as many iconic cartoons as other networks - like Cartoon Network, for example - because they also produced live-action TV shows for younger audiences. Still, there have been some animated classics over the years, from shows like Kim Possible and Recess in the 2000s to modern hits like Amphibia and The Owl House. Disney cartoons are often categorized by their sense of adventure, combining crowdpleasing humor with exciting stories.

Luz's witchy adventure in the Boiling aisles came to an end in The Owl House Season 3. Despite a satisfying series finale that reunited the core characters of Luz, Eda, and King, fans have wanted more and have been persistent with their demands. However, it was pretty much clear that Disney was done with the series from the moment it was announced that the third and final season would feature a painfully short 3 episodes, compared to the 40 episodes that made up Seasons 1 and 2. Regardless, fans did not relent in pushing their luck, pressing home their demands. As such, this latest update from series creator, Dana Terrace, will be a hard pill for fans to swallow.

Over its three-season run, which aired on the Disney Channel, Dana Terrace's The Owl House established a sprawling, magical world where its characters could play. Even so, fans of the show have noticed a fair bit of crossover potential. While The Owl House mostly (and justifiably) prioritized telling a self-contained story, it also took the time to canonize a major connection to another fan-favorite Disney cartoon: Gravity Falls.
One of The Owl House's most prominent fan theories has been that the character of Edalyn Clawthorne (Wendie Malick) was once briefly married to Stan Pines (Alex Hirsch), aka Grunkle Stan, from Gravity Falls, the Hirsch-created show that ran for two seasons on Disney Channel and Disney Xd from 2012 to 2016. The theory dates back to February 2020, when it was first presented by Instagram user inlovewithcartoons.

The following contains major spoilers from Snowpiercer Season 4, Episode 8, "By Weeping Cross," which debuted Sunday, Sept. 8 on AMC.
Snowpiercer Season 4 grinds to a frustrating halt with Episode 8, "By Weeping Cross," which is more about planning for things to happen than anything actually happening. The AMC series wastes most of the excitement it generated with Melanie Cavill's return by devoting a whole hour to preparations for the war between New Eden and Nima Rousseau's army. Presumably that's because the writers want to deliver a bang-up series finale worthy of the possible end of the world, but it doesn't stop this episode from being slow.
"By Weeping Cross" quickly resolves the cliffhangers from Episode 7, with the exception of anything having to do with Melanie. Instead, it splits its narrative between Nima and an unknowing Alex Cavill bringing Snowpiercer toward New Eden, while the citizens brace themselves for their last stand against the soldiers.

When ‘Gravity Falls’ premiered on Disney Channel in 2012, it must have been hard to imagine the cultural phenomenon that it would become in the following years, but that didn’t keep creator Alex Hirsch from dreaming big. Though it only ran for two seasons on Disney Channel and Disney Xd, the impact of ‘Gravity Falls’ was massive. Since the show ended in 2016, Hirsch has gone on to create other hits such as ‘The Owl House’ and is an admirably outspoken advocate for animators, but ‘Gravity Falls’ didn’t really stop when the show ended. Hirsch has dropped not just Easter eggs online after the finale, but a series of books and a worldwide Arg that brought one of the most iconic characters in the series very nearly to life. All of it has been eaten up by loyal fans trained to always be looking for clues and to crack the...

Disney's Gravity Falls presented a universe seemingly filled with queer characters, even though few were explicitly labeled as such. It was no surprise that fans began to read some of the Gravity Falls characters as LGBTQ+. Even 10 years after the Disney series aired, the topic is still discussed. As newer and more openly queer cartoons air, such as The Owl House, fans are even more eager to dive into what could've been in Gravity Falls.
Two of the most heavily queer-coded characters were Dipper and Wendy. Regular viewers questioned if Dipper was transgender, due to a multitude of factors seen throughout the show. Gravity Falls also portrayed Wendy in a fashion that had many fans wondering whether she was heterosexual. As main characters, their status as members of the LGBTQ+ community would mark a significant step for representation in animated television especially for Disney.

Hawks from My Hero Academia is a fan favorite due to his intelligence and determination. Zeno Robinson voices Hawks in the English dub, showcasing his talent across popular anime characters. The article highlights key moments and characters from various anime series like Sk8 the Infinity and One Piece.
Keigo Takami, better known as the pro-hero Hawks of My Hero Academia, quickly became a fan favorite after his full introduction in episode 87 of the anime. He began as a friendly and charming enigma, putting up a very lackadaisical front when, in actuality, Keigo is a very intelligent and determined man who wanted to make a safer world so that heroes could have it easy. In the anime's English dub, he is voiced by the talented Zeno Robinson.
Zeno Robinson began his voice-acting career during his middle school years, landing his professional debut role at 14 years old as "Alan Albright" from Ben 10: Alien Force.

Shows like BoJack Horseman paved the way for Hazbin Hotel's clever comedy and deep storytelling through animation. The Owl House offers a fantasy world with a found family story like Hazbin Hotel, but family-friendlier. Infinity Train showcases inventive character design in a strange setting similar to Hazbin Hotel.
The second season of Hazbin Hotel might be coming faster than the five years it took to produce season 1, but it is still a ways off. Luckily, there are plenty of good shows for fans to watch until then. One of the best elements of Gravity Falls is how spooky it is. The series is an excellent balance of the weird, the comedic, the wholesome, and the perturbing. Mabel and her brother Mabel live in Gravity Falls, Oregon for a summer with their uncle, and things are strange from day one.
Gruncle Stan is cagey, and he has plenty of secrets, along with the rest of Gravity Falls. As Dipper and Mabel unravel more and more mysteries, they discover strange and frightening creatures. Some are spooky ghosts, some are eldritch creatures that only come out one night a year, and some are bone-shivering villains with untold powers.

Animated horror TV shows cater to adult audiences with complex storytelling and innovative art styles. The medium of animation allows for terrifying visuals, making horror TV shows even scarier than movies. Shows like "The Owl House" and "Love Death + Robots" push boundaries in horror and fantasy storytelling.
Horror is a well-known genre that requires a particular type of storytelling, and it turns out some of the best horror TV shows are animated. Though animation brings to mind a younger audience, plenty of animated shows and movies aren't suited for children because they are made to frighten and intrigue adult audiences. If anything, horror always has a place in the animation genre because there are fewer limitations on what can be shown onscreen.
A quality horror television show must have innovative art styles, complex character development, and nuanced takes on morality and darkness.

The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy delivers positive LGBTQ+ representation and compelling humor throughout season 1. Other animated sci-fi series can learn from the Amazon show's approach to LGBTQ+ characters. There are other animated series that feature the humor and representation that Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy benefits from.
The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy is Amazon's hilarious new sci-fi series, and it features great LGBTQ+ representation — so much so that it may leave viewers searching for more animated comedies with LGBTQ+ characters. Dr. Klak's mental health storyline takes up much of her character arc in The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy season 1, but viewers also get a look at her love life during the first batch of episodes. Dr. Klak is a queer character who shows interest in women — including Dr. Zypha, the hospital's new dendropathologist — and previously had a relationship with the non-binary Dr. Azel.

The Owl House cancelation caused fan outrage due to mismatched Disney audience preferences. Creator Dana Terrace revealed the cancelation decision stemmed from the show's demographic skewing older. The series ended in a short Season 3 with three specials, leaving fans wanting more.
Fans hate it when a series gets canceled. Especially when it was a good show with great ratings, fun and loveable characters, and colorful animation. That's how The Owl House fans still feel in 2024 after the Disney Channel animated series got canceled after Season 3. To make matters worse, the third season was incredibly short. Disney has made some bad calls in the past (and present), and sadly, this is just another wrong move for the company.
Fans have speculated on a multitude of reasons behind the cancelation. However, the truth behind why The Owl House got canceled is more ridiculous than you think. It has nothing to do with ratings,...

Fans of Percy Jackson can find similar themes and tones in shows like Shadowhunters and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Cursed and Lockwood & Co. offer fantasy stories with elements of ancient myths, perfect for Percy Jackson viewers. The Owl House and Wednesday provide magical fish-out-of-water stories that are enjoyable for children and young adults.
Percy Jackson & the Olympians season 1 delivered a compelling fantasy story that's faithful to Rick Riordan's books, and with no official announcement regarding season 2, fans might be looking to fill the demigod-shaped hole in their hearts with shows like the Disney+ series. It's difficult to pinpoint series exactly like Percy Jackson, as Riordan's story walks a fine line between high-stakes fantasy and lighthearted comedy. It's also aimed at children and young adults, though it's relatable and timeless enough to appeal to mature audiences as well — particularly those who grew up with the books.

The Owl House intentionally references aspects of the Harry Potter series, deconstructing tropes and making fun of specific plot elements. The show features humorous references to the Sorting Hat, a school of magic, and destructive plant magic, which differ from Harry Potter's portrayal. The Owl House rejects the concept of the Chosen One, emphasizing the importance of choosing oneself rather than the idea of a single person with a destiny to save the world.
Dana Terrace's animated TV show The Owl House intentionally avoids the biases and plot holes of the Harry Potter series, moving the fantasy genre forward. The Owl House follows human teenager Luz Noceda who falls through a portal into a magic world, where she befriends and learns magic from Eda the witch and King the demon. The show shares some recognizable plot elements with Harry Potter, namely the education of young people with magical powers.

TV characters often undergo surprising transformations throughout a season or series, deviating from the initial impression made on the audience. Character changes can be due to external factors like showrunner decisions or actors' lives apart from the series. Examples include Jenny Humphrey in Gossip Girl, Damon Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries, and Amity Blight in The Owl House.
Some popular TV characters make a first impression that turns out to be very different from the rest of their character arc. As more details about a character are revealed, and the story itself forces them to adapt, the character evolves into something completely different from what the audience was expecting. Good writers can do this so that the character's first appearance makes sense in the context of their story throughout a season or a series.

LGBTQ+ representation in animated shows is vital for LGBTQ+ viewers to see themselves and navigate their own experiences and identities. Shows like She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Steven Universe, and The Dragon Prince showcase diverse families, gender identities, and sexualities, normalizing LGBTQ+ characters. Cartoons like Harley Quinn, Big Mouth, and The Owl House challenge stereotypes and depict healthy and normalized LGBTQ+ relationships, while also exploring sensitive issues with sensitivity and humor.
There are numerous examples of cartoons that have deftly incorporated LGBTQ+ representation. While this journey has taken a while, LGBTQ+ representation has become somewhat standard across most entertainment mediums. Animated shows boast a wealth of brilliant examples.

Young Hellboy fanart from the creator of The Owl House is enough to make a compelling argument for why the pint-sized hellspawn should return in more stories. Dana Terrace is best known as the mind behind The Owl House, a Peabody-award-winning show that was canceled after three seasons. In spite of this, the show has gained an immense cult following, largely thanks to incorporating more LGBTQ+ representation than fans would expect from a cartoon under the Disney banner.

What makes the 2016 film Your Name great is the way it subverts the classic body swapping trope that is so common not just in anime but in other media too. The body swap storyline has become so prevalent in fiction that it has become a trope in countless films and television series like Freaky Friday, Gravity Falls, and The Owl House. Traditionally, this narrative is used as a way to give two or more polar opposite characters a situation where they come to understand the perspective of the other. This eventually leads to the two reconciling their differences and improving their relationship with one another. This type of story is difficult to pull off today because of how common the trope and its clichés are, but the film Your Name actually expanded upon the idea and subverted it in the best way.

The Owl House was an animated series that ran from 2020-2023, and while the fantasy world and great story was a draw, the characters are what made it so popular. From the happy-go-lucky lead protagonist Luz Noceda (Sarah Nicole-Robles) to her shifty but loyal mentor Eda Clawthorne (Wendie Malick), these characters fill out the magical world of Demonland, and Hooty, who is The Owl House himself.

Romance is a key aspect of most series, but up until recently, LGBTQ+ couples didn't often feature in TV shows. However, in recent years, queer couples have become more and more common, with great writing that portrays relatable and interesting relationships from this community.
From Carol and Susan in Friends, a relationship that slowly and steadily normalized the LGBTQ+ community in television, to more modern couples like David and Patrick in Schitt's Creek, fortunately, there are some great portrayals of queer couples in television. Hopefully, this will become more frequent as the years go by.

In 2020, Dana Terrace's The Owl House premiered on Disney+, and it became one of the best animated TV shows. The series follows 14-year-old Luz Noceda, who accidentally stumbles into the Demon Realm instead of going to a Reality Check summer camp. While there, she befriends Eda The Owl Lady and King. Luz decides to live with them in the titular Owl House to study magic, and antics quickly ensue.
The Owl House is very much a dramedy-horror tale, and it boasts plenty of expertly-written jokes, good dialogue, interesting character arcs, and high stakes to keep viewers of all ages interested. A Chaotic or Disaster Bisexual is defined in a variety of ways. They could give off so much chaotic energy, that without knowing anything else about them you could correctly guess that they’re bi. They can also be defined by their awkwardness when it comes to flirting and expressing their feelings. Despite being attracted to a wide variety of people, the Chaotic Bisexual is a hot mess above all else.
While some may see this term as an insult or an essentialization of an entire sexuality, many embrace this title with open arms. Identifying as a Chaotic Bisexual allows us to embrace the flaws that make us human and not take ourselves so seriously. Netflix's award-winning animated series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power has roots in the iconic tabletop role-playing game (Ttrpg) Dungeons & Dragons.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Nd Stevenson described the inspiration he took from his and his wife's high school-themed D&d campaign. "I got really into all the spells that I could do with a warlock. One of them was the teleportation spell, the Misty Step. My wife, [The Owl House writer Molly Ostertag], who was the Dm, I managed to make her life a living hell with that spell by just teleporting into the third act boss battle in the first five minutes," he stated and went to explain how that encounter influenced Glimmer's teleportation powers.
