The Creep Tapes not only marks the return of the Creep movies' titular serial killer but also adds new characters to the mix who serve as catalysts for exploring the franchise's comically unsettling world and stories. Made on a shoestring budget of $500, the first Creep movie garnered immense critical acclaim after its release in 2014 and still boasts an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 91%. For obvious reasons, the movie's success spawned a sequel, which premiered in 2017. Unlike most sequels, Creep 2 performed even better than its predecessor, boasting a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Although Creep 3 was reportedly in development after the second movie's success, creative challenges held its filmmakers back from bringing it to life. However, instead of creating Creep 3, they have now made a spin-off/prequel miniseries, which unfolds partly as an anthology. With each new episode, it shows how the franchise's central killer targets and murders new victims.

Let’s talk about the tiny movies in America.
Not the streamer productions around $20 million that benefit from Hollywood resources, nor the dwindling middle class of features lucky enough to secure independent financing for $5 million-$10 million. This is about the bootstrapped, maxed-out-credit-card moviemaking that exists through the sheer will of its creators. The ones with the microscopic cast and crew (and often the cast is the crew), the minimalist narratives mandated by minuscule resources — the personal and potentially alienating visions of singular moving-image artists who somehow manage to bring their movie dreams to life. What happens to them?
As SXSW convenes for its first in-person edition in two years, that question is particularly apt. It describes many of the films that will premiere at this festival, and they arrive with a reality check: Major streamer entities aren’t invested in these tiny movies at a time when said streamers have...

Incrementally knocking on Indiewood’s door with 2016’s Blue Jay (TIFF world premiere) and 2019’s Paddleton (Sundance Film Festival world premiere), Alex Lehman got behind the camera in New York City this past June with Kaley Cuoco and Pete Davidson for a rom com titled Meet Cute – an original screenplay by Noga Pnueli. Is Bigfoot, also known as Sasquatch, real? “Sasquatch,” the upcoming Hulu docuseries executive produced by Mark and Jay Duplass probably isn’t going to answer that question.
However, the series does aim to offer a deep-dive into a grisly triple homicide that was allegedly caused by a Sasquatch decades ago. Hulu recently released a trailer for the project which is directed by Joshua Rofé.
Hulu’s synopsis for “Sasquatch” reads: While visiting a pot farm in Northern California in 1993, investigative journalist David Holthouse heard a story that still haunts him. On a nearby farm three men were torn limb from limb in a savage Bigfoot attack. “Sasquatch” follows David as he revisits the Redwoods 25 years later in search of any evidence that might lead to the truth of what happened that night. As he pulls at the threads of this story he’ll be taken down a path that’s...

David Lynch once launched a one-man awards campaign for Laura Dern’s “Inland Empire” performance. At the cross streets of Hollywood Boulevard and La Brea in Los Angeles, Lynch famously sat in a director’s chair in between a cow and an Fyc banner for Dern. While not as strange, Mark Duplass has gone full Lynch this year by kickstarting his own one-man Fyc campaign on behalf of his “Paddleton” co-star Ray Romano (via the Los Angeles Times).
Duplass was spotted at various locations throughout Hollywood on Friday, November 15 posing for photographs with his handmade Fyc posters. One sign read “Everybody still loves Raymond,” while others included slogans like “4 Ur Conside-Ray-Shun!” and “Vote 4 Ray!” Duplass campaigned for Romano at Hollywood & Highland, Sunset Boulevard, and the offices of Film Independent.

Idris Elba is squashing any lingering hopes that he’ll one day play James Bond by fulfilling his dreams to be a DJ.
Rather than swigging martinis and driving an Aston Martin, People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” now stars in new Netflix comedy series, “Turn Up Charlie,” as a struggling British DJ trying to get his break in the music business.
In the new trailer that dropped Thursday, we see Charlie hitting the decks, hitting the floor as he falls out of bed with a mystery woman, and almost hitting rockbottom as he struggles to pay the bills. Luckily, he also lands a job offer — as a nanny for his best friend’s wild 11-year-old daughter.

NetflixIt is invigorating to see the way grief is portrayed by the men, played by Ray Romano and Mark Duplass, in this ‘cancer-buddy-road trip’ film.Vaishnavi SundarOver the course of cinematic history, the portrayal of ‘masculinity’ has largely remained a hackneyed template. A template that filmmakers have been able to execute with their eyes closed as it has remained unchanged for more than a century. Until very recently – owing to a surge of films that have tried to sidestep this tedious stereotype – a cinematic “man” could comfortably be fit in a tiny tinsel box. How uninspiring! This week I watched the Netflix original film Paddleton, starring Ray Romano and Mark Duplass. I hope this refreshingly novel portrayal of masculinity proliferates mainstream cinema consumption in the future. It is about time we shift gears from the toxic, rough machismo that is devoid of any vulnerability. The Duplass Brothers (Mark and Jay...

Paddleton is the latest comedy/drama from Netflix and comes from writer/actor Mark Duplass. Duplass stars along with Ray Romano in this heartbreaking buddy comedy. The pair play neighbors and long-time friends who challenged when one of them is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Is this another Netflix original dud, or is it something you should add to your queue.

An unwieldy hybrid of “Step Brothers” and “50/50,” Alex Lehmann’s “Paddleton” offers a funny, surprisingly tender portrait of two arrested-development adult men coming to terms with a terminal illness. Ray Romano continues to offer new dimensions to the dumpy everyman characters he could at this point play in his sleep opposite Mark Duplass’ do-nothing cancer patient, while director and co-writer Lehmann (“Blue Jay”) mines a familiar kind of male bond for an understated, unexpectedly powerful payoff.
Duplass plays Michael, a copy-shop clerk with one friend, his upstairs neighbor Andy (Romano). Notwithstanding their separate apartments, the duo spends virtually every free minute together, mostly rewatching the same kung fu movie while eating frozen pizza, but occasionally venturing outside to play an invented sport called “paddleton” which involves hitting a racquetball off of the screen of an abandoned drive-in movie theater into a barrel.

Director Alex Lehmann made his narrative feature film debut with the critically-acclaimed “Blue Jay” in 2016, a film that was shot with just a sketch of a screenplay in just under seven days, with actors Mark Duplass (who also wrote the sketch) and Sarah Paulson improvising the dialogue. His sophomore feature, “Paddleton,” which also marks his screenwriting debut, is a much similar, bare-bones production.

Matinees to See: The Gospel of Eureka (2/8), The Man Who Killed Hitler And Then The Bigfoot (2/8), The Unicorn (2/15), (2/15), How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2/22), Paddleton (2/22)
15. Alita: Battle Angel (Robert Rodriguez; Feb. 14)
Developed as a James Cameron directing vehicle, he was a bit too consumed with his Avatar sequels to helm Alita: Battle Angel so he stepped down to be a producer and give over the reins to Robert Rodriguez. Despite the first trailers selling more of a generic visual effects-heavy drama, hopefully there is something stranger under the surface in this adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s work, following a non-human awakening with virtually no memory.

Netflix has confirmed that 38 new original series, movies and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in February, including Dan Gilroy‘s thriller “Velvet Buzzsaw,” which reunites him with Jake Gyllenhaal who appeared in his first film “Nightcrawler.” Also on hand is Gilroy’s wife, the far too seldom seen Rene Russo.
On a slightly lighter note, Amy Poehler brings us the surreal comedy series “Russian Doll.” Ray Romano headlines both the cancer comedy “Paddleton” and the stand-up special “Ray Romano: Right Here, Around the Corner.” And Oscar nominee Ellen Page headlines “The Umbrella Academy,” based on the comic book series of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá.

Crafting an inspirational story that naturally combines playful humor and the serious question of what love looks like in action can be an intimating challenge. But director Alex Lehmann stunningly created an equally amusing and emotional story with his co-writer, Mark Duplass, for their new movie, ‘Paddleton.’ The comedy-drama is a captivating tale of the […]

A movie about cancer has no right to be as consistently amusing as “Paddleton” — a triumph for which credit should be spread around, even if it most deservedly goes to Ray Romano. As a bachelor whose best friend is facing his final days, Romano infuses this otherwise downcast material with regular doses of humor, all of it expertly designed to reflect the roiling emotional roller-coaster upon which he’s been thrust. Locating both pathos and comedy in a raft of small grace notes, the film seems primed to find a sizable streaming audience when, after its Sundance Film Festival premiere, it arrives exclusively on Netflix in late February.
Reuniting director Alex Lehmann with his “Blue Jay” collaborator Mark Duplass, “Paddleton” is almost exclusively a two-hander about Michael (Duplass) and his neighbor Andy (Romano), who lives above him in a dingy apartment complex. Michael’s fatal diagnosis is revealed immediately, and...

Death stalks every moment of Paddleton, the sophomore directorial effort from Alex Lehmann, who co-writes this script with Mark Duplass, his star here and the co-star of his first film Blue Jay. Michael (Duplass) is dying and there’s nothing he can do about it. He enlists his upstairs neighbor Andy (Ray Romano) to help him enjoy the months left. Not to do anything special, mind you, but rather the things Michael knows he likes: watch their favorite movie Death Punch on loop, make pizza and play Paddleton, a hybrid racketball game of sorts. A shutdown drive-in serves as their court, and the game looks legitimately fun on screen. There’s also a final prescription: a medication Michael can take that will kill him before “things get really bad.” Though Andy’s reluctant with all of it, especially the last part, he listens to his friend.

Alex Lehmann’s “Paddleton” opens on a decidedly (and deceptively) serious note. Michael (Mark Duplass) sits in a doctor’s examination room, looking drawn, haggard, and worried, and for good reason; he has cancerous lesions on his liver, and while his physician won’t come right out and call it terminal, it’s hard to miss the inference. But his neighbor and best friend Andy (Ray Romano), who’s come along for moral support, tries to get some clarity; he proposes an elaborate code wherein the doctor will correct him if he says anything wrong about his friend’s prognosis.

In the mid-2000s, Mark Duplass made a name for himself with a low-budget indie called The Puffy Chair and helped introduce the burgeoning “mumblecore” movement to cinephiles. Now, after a decade of near-constant movie appearances and starring on television shows like Togetherness and The League, Duplass is still embracing his low-budget roots by starring in a new […]

"I'm the dying guy!" "I'm the other guy!" Netflix has released the first full trailer for an indie comedy titled Paddleton, the latest feature from the director of Blue Jay. The film is premiering at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival in a few weeks, then arrives on Netflix in February. Paddleton is about the unlikely friendship between two misfit neighbors when one of them is diagnosed with terminal cancer. They go on an emotional journey together, chasing emus and getting into all kinds of wacky trouble, of course. The film stars Ray Romano and Mark Duplass, who co-wrote the screenplay with the director. The small cast also includes Marguerite Moreau, Christine Woods, Alexandra Billings, and Matt Bush. This looks pretty good. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Alex Lehmann's Paddleton, direct from YouTube: An unlikely friendship between two misfit neighbors becomes an unexpectedly emotional journey when the younger...

This year’s festival will play home to at least one melancholic buddy comedy from the Duplass brothers, thanks to Alex Lehmann’s “Paddleton.” The dramedy reunited the three-time filmmaker with his “Blue Jay” writer and star Mark Duplass — who also produced the film, alongside his brother Jay Duplass — and adds in beloved “Big Sick” co-star Ray Romano for a story of two mismatched pals who undertake an “unexpectedly emotional journey.”
Per the film’s official synopsis: “An unlikely friendship between two misfit neighbors becomes an unexpectedly emotional journey when the younger man is diagnosed with terminal cancer.” The film’s first trailer doesn’t shy away form the tough stuff — Duplass’ character is terminally ill, and he’s hellbent on doing some bucket list stuff before ending his life on his own terms — but it also plays up the bond between the film’s main characters without getting too...
