Noel Clarke’s legal battle with The Guardian kicked off on Thursday at London’s High Court, as the “Doctor Who” actor seeks libel damages from the British newspaper for publishing sexual misconduct allegations against him.
In a bombshell 2021 report from The Guardian, Clarke was accused of groping, harassment and bullying by 20 women. At the time, Clarke denied the claims, but said he would be “seeking professional help to educate myself and change for the better.” Appearing in court on Thursday for a preliminary hearing, Clarke’s lawyer, Adam Speker Kc, said his client underwent a “trial by media,” The Evening Standard reports.
“Over a series of days at the end of April 2021 and the beginning of May 2021, Guardian News and Media Limited chose to label [Clarke] as a sexual predator and accuse him of having acted improperly towards a large number of women in a sexual and criminal way over many years,...

U.K. film and TV star Noel Clarke has spoken up about the so-called ‘cancel culture’ and McCarthyism and revealed that he had suicidal feelings after sexual harassment allegations against him.
In an interview with U.K. tabloid Daily Mail, the first after London’s Metropolitan Police decided not to investigate the claims against him, Clarke said: “Twenty years of work was gone in 24 hours. I lost everything. The company I built from the ground up, my TV shows, my movies, my book deals, the industry respect I had. In my heart and my head it has damaged me in a way I cannot articulate.”
“There has been no arrest, no charges, no trial, no verdict but I have been criminalized,” Clarke added. “This is a form of modern McCarthyism.”

British actor and producer Noel Clarke will not face criminal charges over sexual harassment allegations made last year after London’s Metropolitan Police dropped its investigation, citing a lack of evidence.
The bombshell 2021 story, reported by The Guardian, saw more than 20 women accuse the Bulletproof and Doctor Who star of various incidents of misconduct between 2004 and 2019. He has denied all of the allegations, but has sought professional help to improve his behavior.
A statement was issued by the police saying a “thorough” assessment of the claims had been conducted and that it had “determined the information would not meet the threshold for a criminal investigation.”
It added that any further criminal allegations would be “thoroughly considered” if they came forward.
The fallout from the report saw broadcaster Sky cancel Clarke’s series Bulletproof and suspend any further work with the actor. He also had his BAFTA membership revoked.

Exclusive: The BBC has overhauled its guidelines for dealing with bullying and sexual harassment on set in light of “recent revelations” in the TV and film industries.
Deadline has seen an email sent by BBC chief content officer Charlotte Moore to dozens of UK indies, which tasked producers on all new shows with confirming they have a suitable “respect at work policy”, naming at least one safeguarding contact and requiring all cast and crew to complete anti-bullying and harassment training before the cameras roll.
The blanket policy will cover all genres and is an update on the previous policy.
According to the BBC memo, contact details for support helplines should be made available on all call sheets, and, where filming involves scenes of an intimate nature, an intimacy coach should be engaged.
Producers were told to contact their commissioning editor or genre director if they have “serious concerns about behavior on a production.

"Artfully meditative." Grasshopper Film has unveiled an official trailer for an indie documentary film titled Bulletproof, which first debuted last year at a number of film festivals including Hot Docs, DokuFest, and the Philadelphia, Camden, and Maryland Film Festivals. The chilling film is about the response of American schools to gun violence. "What does it mean to be safe in school in the United States? Safe from what, and from whom? Bulletproof poses and complicates these questions through a provocative exploration of fear and American violence." Todd Chandler's doc explores the complexities of violence in schools by looking at the strategies employed to prevent it. Lockdown drills, teacher firearms training, metal detector screenings, and school safety trade shows. The film then wonders "what these rituals reflect back at us, looking beyond immediate causes and responses to mass shootings in a cinematic meditation on the array of forces that shape...

Left Bank Pictures, the Sony-backed U.K. producers of Netflix smash hit “The Crown,” has been accused of mishandling a sexual harassment complaint, according to an expose published in The Guardian on Monday.
Freelancers Holly Bourdillon and Laura Johnston were working on the post-production of “White Lines,” another Netflix show produced by Left Bank, in December 2019 in London. Chris Croucher, then an executive producer at Left Bank, sexually assaulted Bourdillon, and also physically assaulted Johnston, according to The Guardian.
Croucher was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2020. He pleaded guilty to sexual and common assault in January 2021 and was sentenced to three months’ curfew and a five-year community order.
However, Bourdillon and Johnston allege in The Guardian that a meeting with Left Bank CEO Andy Harries and COO Grace Wilson, along with two other unnamed members of staff in January 2020, caused them distress. “Andy starts the meeting by saying that Chris was an amazing producer,...

Exclusive: BAFTA has become the latest influential UK industry body to call for a high-level summit to address historical sexual misconduct allegations amid a growing #MeToo movement in television.
BAFTA joined Time’s Up UK in requesting that key industry players gather to find a way of improving accountability when survivors of bullying and assault make complaints about their experiences, sometimes years after they have occurred.
In a statement sent to Deadline, BAFTA CEO Amanda Berry said: “We join Times Up UK in calling on the industry to come together at a high-level summit to address the urgent need for a consistent and trusted industry-wide approach to responding to allegations of bullying and harassment.”

Michaela Coel’s “I May Destroy You” won two BAFTAs in a year where there was no single dominant winner at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ (BAFTA) Television Awards on Sunday.
The BBC/HBO show won best mini-series and leading actress for Coel, who dedicated the award to the production’s director of intimacy Ita O’Brien.
“Thank you for your existence in our industry, for making the space safe for creating physical, emotional, and professional boundaries so that we can make work about exploitation, loss of respect, about abuse of power, without being exploited or abused in the process,” Coel said.
Paul Mescal won leading actor for BBC/Hulu show “Normal People.”

Exclusive: Time’s Up UK, the charity born out of the Harvey Weinstein scandal and subsequent #MeToo movement, is exploring ways of improving accountability in the British television industry when allegations of sexual misconduct emerge years after a production has shut up shop.
Time’s Up UK chair Dame Heather Rabbatts told Deadline that her organization wants to address the “gray space” that exists when there is a lag between an inappropriate incident taking place and a complaint being lodged or made public.
It follows the allegations against Noel Clarke made by more than 20 women. Many of the accusations, which Clarke vehemently denies, date back to shoots that have long since wrapped or are in the hands of a different production team, such as BBC sci-fi drama Doctor Who.

Ricky Gervais has responded to misconduct allegations against “After Life” producer Charlie Hanson, a long-time collaborator on numerous projects by the British comedian.
“I am shocked and appalled to learn of the historical allegations made by a number of women against Charlie Hanson. The decision was made to immediately remove him from production and I am confident the matter is being handled thoroughly,” said Gervais in a statement on Saturday.
Hanson produced two seasons of Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s BBC and HBO comedy “Extras” as well as the pair’s film “Cemetery Junction.” He was also behind Gervais and Merchant’s series “Life’s Too Short” and “Derek,” which starred Gervais.

The CW is the fifth — and final — broadcast network to firm up its fall 2021 schedule, and there are some big changes.
Riverdale is leaving Wednesdays behind after five seasons leading off the night.
The buzzy teen drama is moving to Tuesdays at 9/8c, out of The Flash.
It’s a big move, but clearly, one to bolster the ratings of the young-skewing drama.
It has been on a slippery slope in the ratings, much like many of the other CW series, so the move is hardly a big surprise.
The CW is also touting both The Flash and Riverdale kicking off with “five-episode events.”
The Flash‘s five-episode event will feature crossovers with Arrowverse characters.
“We’re talking about other superheroes from the CWverse that will come together in each [of the] individual episodes,” CW CEO Mark Pedowitz said of the news.

The Noel Clarke- and Ashley Walters-led drama “Bulletproof” has been canceled by U.K. broadcaster Sky following accusations of misconduct made against Clarke by several women last month.
“Sky will not be proceeding with any further series of Bulletproof,” a spokesperson for Sky said in a statement to TheWrap Friday.
The show was in pre-production on its fourth season when accusations were first leveled against Clarke last month, and Sky halted their relationship with the actor. An individual with knowledge tells TheWrap Sky tried to figure out how “Bulletproof” could proceed without star Clarke, but ultimately could not find a creative decision that would allow for them to move forward with the series.
On April 29, The Guardian published a story including accounts rom 20 women who accused the “Bulletproof” actor of sexual harassment, unwanted groping, inappropriate comments made on set, sharing explicit photos and videos without consent and bullying.

Sky has canceled the fourth season of Bulletproof following The Guardian’s explosive investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against Noel Clarke.
Deadline revealed last month that Sky suspended its work with Clarke following the publication of The Guardian’s story, which featured accusations from 20 women who had worked with the actor and producer. Clarke strenuously denies wrongdoing.
At the time, we reported that the Comcast-owned broadcaster was exploring other ways of making Season 4 of Bulletproof, but Sky has now decided that this will not be possible. A spokesman said: “Sky will not be proceeding with any further series of Bulletproof.”
The UK producer behind the series, Vertigo Films, continues to investigate Clarke’s conduct. All3Media, which backs Clarke’s production company Unstoppable Film & Television, is also investigating the star.

Sky has canceled “Bulletproof,” three weeks after multiple sexual misconduct allegations emerged about the show’s lead Noel Clarke, Variety can reveal.
A spokesperson for the Comcast-backed pay-tv operator confirmed the decision: “Sky will not be proceeding with any further series of ‘Bulletproof.'” Meanwhile, production company Vertigo Films has also said it “will not make any future series of ‘Bulletproof.'”
Variety understands season 4 of the show had already been commissioned and was in pre-production stages when news broke in The Guardian on April 29 about Clarke. Sky immediately took steps to halt any work on the program — and other work with Clarke — and has been holding internal discussions ever since about what’s next for the show.

Members of the U.K. film and TV industry are calling for an overhaul of on-set safety measures and a “recalibration” of how to protect survivors of abuse following reports of multiple allegations of sexual harassment and bullying against Noel Clarke during his decades-long career as an actor, writer and producer.
Since The Guardian released its investigation into the star, best known for his roles in “Doctor Who” and “Bulletproof,” as well as creating “The Hood” film trilogy, 26 people have come forward with accusations against him. Clarke has categorically denied any sexual misconduct or criminal wrongdoing, but released a statement apologizing for some of his actions.
The revelations have emboldened industry insiders to speak out about a culture that has allowed professional misconduct to continue, even after the Time’s Up movement swept the film and TV world four years ago with the #MeToo reckoning sparked by the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

A report has been filed with London’s Met Police relating to sexual misconduct allegations against British actor Noel Clarke.
Met Police confirmed that they received a third party report on April 21 relating to allegations of sexual offenses by a man. Police are assessing the information, but an investigation is not currently underway.
A statement shared with Variety reads: “On Wednesday, 21 April, police received a third party report relating to allegations of sexual offenses allegedly committed by a male over a period of time.”
According to the BBC, an anonymous third party report can’t be investigated by police; however, it can be used as intelligence for cross-referencing against other reports against the same individual.
It’s still unclear who made the initial report to police.
The embattled Clarke is facing numerous sexual misconduct, harassment and bullying allegations from at least 20 women who worked with the actor-producer in a professional setting.

It has been an eye-opening 24 hours for the U.K. film and TV industries as the fall-out continues from bombshell sexual misconduct and harassment allegations against British actor Noel Clarke. (Check out Variety’s explainer about Clarke and his career to date.)
In the course of just one day, the 45-year-old actor-producer has been dropped from his management and suspended by BAFTA; production on the latest season of his police procedural show “Bulletproof” has been halted; U.S. network The CW has cut ties with the series; and his co-star and close friend Ashley Walters has spoken out against him.

This week, British actor, writer and director Noel Clarke has made headlines after being accused of groping, harassment and bullying by 20 women.
Clarke played Mickey Smith in “Doctor Who” from 2005 to 2010 and starred as Sam in the films “Kidulthood,” “Adulthood” and “Brotherhood,” which he wrote and directed, intent on bringing more representations of working-class Britain to screen. Clarke also writes, produces and plays Aaron Bishop in the British police procedural series “Bulletproof,” alongside close friend Ashley Walters.
Clarke made his film debut in 2003’s “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” and has since starred in movies including “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “Centurion,” “4.3.2.1.,” “Fast Girls,” “Storage 24,” “I Am Soldier,” “The Anomaly,” “I Kill Giants,” “Mute,” “10×10,” “The Corrupted,” “Twist” and “Sas: Red Notice.”
In 2015, Clarke founded the London-based production company Unstoppable Film and Television with Jason Maza, eventually securing investment from super-indie All3Media, which owns “Fleabag” producer Two Brothers and “1917” outfit Neal Street Productions.

Exclusive: All3Media has suspended Noel Clarke and his business partner Jason Maza from their production company Unstoppable Film and Television following an explosive report on misconduct in The Guardian.
Deadline hears that All3Media chiefs made the decision to suspend the duo this morning, pending the outcome of an investigation into Clarke’s actions after the actor was accused of inappropriate behavior by 20 women. Clarke vehemently denies the allegations.
Maza is also caught up in the story after The Guardian reported that he phoned people in recent weeks who allege or say they witnessed Clarke’s sexual misconduct. He told one woman that Unstoppable would be “done” if the claims emerged. His lawyer said the calls were to “friends in the industry” to dispel “untrue” accusations.
