The project, selected for the Berlin European Film Market’s Fiction Toolbox Program at Berlinale 2025, is aiming for a November production start.
The film follows a same-sex couple in small-town India pursuing parenthood through illegal sperm donation. When Tithi cannot conceive, her partner Rahi becomes pregnant, leading to a descent into paranoia fueled by societal harassment and dark secrets about the pregnancy itself.
“Though it’s wrapped in thick atmospheric dread, ‘Ummeed’ deeply moved me with the emotional complexity of the characters and their resilience against societal prejudice,” says Tejpal. “More than a psychological horror film, this is a story about redemption and hope.”

Octavia Spencer has starred in many successful movies, three of them leading to Academy Award nominations, with the actress winning the golden statuette for 2011's The Help. With over 100 acting credits in different genres, one of her films has found new success on streaming.
In 2019, Spencer reunited with the director of the project that got her the Oscar for a completely different film — Ma. The psychological thriller was a complete change from their first project, and, although it had a mixed reception, it was a big hit at the box office. Six years later, Ma is a success again on Netflix, reaching the seventh spot with 3.2 million views on the global charts, the equivalent of 5.3 million hours viewed.

How evil can Octavia Spencer (Truth Be Told) be? Over the years, we've seen the Oscar winner's talent for comedy and drama, but one genre that she hasn't visited much is horror. It did happen, though: in 2019 she starred in Ma, a psychological horror movie that revealed a different side of Spencer. Almost six years after its release, the movie is finding a new audience on Netflix and has steadily climbed the streamer's global charts. This week, the movie accumulated 7 million views and made the top 3 list of most-watched titles on the platform.

Raw, scary, thrilling and suspenseful are some terms that can be coined to define Ma.
Released back in 2019, Ma, an American psychological horror movie, is currently proving to be a Netflix favorite for many of its viewers. It was directed by Tate Taylor and written by Scotty Landes. The movie stars the all-famous The Help actress Octavia Spencer in the lead role, with Juliette Lewis, Diana Silvers, Corey Fogelmanis, Gianni Paolo, McKaley Miller, and Luke Evans being part of the cast members.
The plot revolves around a middle-aged woman who befriends some teenagers after buying them booze on request. Later she offers them a place to party in after hours in her basement. Initially, it all seemed fine, even though the setup in her basement gave eerie vibes. As planned, everything was supposed to go well until the rules for partying were broken and that is when she snaps.

Director James Mangold explores a pivotal chapter in Bob Dylan’s early career in A Complete Unknown. Our review:
It is a truth universally acknowledged that music biopics must follow The Formula. Whether they’re about Ray Charles or Elton John or Amy Winehouse or Brit rock outfit Queen, their stories follow a path of pivotal childhood experiences, chance meetings, paths to fame and the scourge of drink and drugs, before everything’s wrapped up with a rousing concert at the end.
The Formula was so well understood by 2007 that Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story fired a silver bullet at the wretched thing – and yet still the template staggered on, showing up largely unscathed in the likes of Bohemian Rhapsody and Back To Black.
Almost 20 years after he made Walk The Line – a film openly lampooned by the above-mentioned Dewey Cox Story – its director, James Mangold is back in...

In today's age of the internet, memes are a language. Knowing the most current memes and being able to use them appropriately counts as eloquence. The appropriateness of a meme obviously depends on the juncture of a conversation in which it is used, usually eliciting laughter from the callback or reference to a memorable instance of pop culture. From movies and celebrity interviews to song lyrics and comic book panels, any audiovisual piece of work can become the source of a meme if a moment from them is consistently referred to across various contexts.
The popularity of a meme can often even have a profound impact on its source material, from generating buzz about a movie by becoming viral to keeping a show relevant, like Friends memes that prove it is still relatable. The best memes of the movie Ma, for example, have undercut the movie's suspense and horror for viewers,...

There are several members of the A Different World cast who have died - and the actors who have passed away after appearing on the NBC sitcom shows how high the caliber of talent in the show truly was. This article contains spoilers for Dandadan, Episode 7, To A Kinder World. Dandadan is now available to stream on Crunchyroll and Netflix. It also contains mentions of physical abuse, implied trafficking, suicide, and other serious themes. Reader discretion is advised.
The latest episode of Dandadan had fans sobbing by the end. The story of the Acrobatic Silky and her young daughter was unspeakably tragic. Unfortunately, the gravitas of the Silkys redemptive ending was quickly ruined by the catchy and goofy ending song. The song is great on its own, but its presence at the end of Episode 7 was a hindrance to the story viewers just saw.
Dandadan is not the only anime to do this. Plenty of other anime have ending songs that dont match particular episodes - or even the genre of the show audiences are watching. Many fans have complained about upbeat ending songs tarnishing somber or terrifying moments.

In a memo for employees, Netflix Cto Elizabeth Stone acknowledged there were some issues in delivering the Paul vs. Tyson fight to viewers.
The public line Netflix toed after its livestream of a boxing match between YouTuber Jake Paul and former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson was that from a ratings standpoint, the fight was a massive success. ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is set to release in about 4 months, and it’s already generating a lot of excitement. The show will bring back familiar characters, including Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock (Daredevil), Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin, Elden Henson as Foggy, and Deborah Ann Woll as Karen.
The original version of Daredevil: Born Again was canceled after filming nearly half of the episodes because it wasn’t very interesting and didn’t match the tone of Netflix’s original show. It was meant to be a courtroom drama with very little action from Daredevil.
After the creative overhaul, the show has significantly shifted its tone and level of “darkness.” This is confirmed by the show’s stars and the recent teaser trailer. The show will be more aligned with the tone of Netflix’s show with everything indicating that it will be rated TV-ma.

Danielle Deadwyler, who was previously snubbed by the Academy Awards for her starring portrayal in Till, said she’s more “relaxed” about being back in the Oscars conversation with The Piano Lesson. And, in fact, de-centering awards season might be the way to go.
“I’m relaxed about it,” the actress told the Los Angeles Times in a recent profile. “I’ve always known what has always been most valuable, which is people, what is going on with people, what is going on with culture. This is so much about the ensemble, about how much we are connecting and the joy that it brought us all to make. It’s not about recognition individually. That should not overwhelm one’s ego or psyche. I feel good and more settled in that understanding. The incessant questioning about awards, awards, awards can be too much.”
Notably, Deadwyler found herself amid a 2022 controversy...

The 19-year-old protagonist of Giovanni Tortorici’s ‘Diciannove’ – Leonardo Gravina, reminded me quite a lot of myself from that age. He has next-to-none self-awareness and a bloated self-esteem. Just out of his adolescence and technically an adult, he considers the world his oyster. Much like Julie from ‘The Worst Person in the World’, he tries different modes of education as if they are tempting dishes on a restaurant menu! Of course, he has no baggage of responsibilities weighing on his shoulders. He can be who he wants – at least he feels like he can.
In Tortorici’s loosely autobiographical film, co-produced by Luca Guadagnino, he looks inward into the chaotic journey he went through to find a sense of mental stability and experience growth. In his film, we meet Leonardo, leaving his hometown of Palermo and stepping into London to study economics. He resides with his older sister and her friend.

Nine years after making “Thithi,” one of my favorite Indian films of the 2010s, Raam Reddy is back with “The Fable,” set in a place that couldn’t be further away from the setup of his first film. Nestled deep in the Himalayas, formally set in 1989, “The Fable” retains the timeless nature in its setup, which is typical of the fables. It is shot in film, which only helps to further the cause. The magnificent opening scene sets the tone of the magic realism which is set to follow. Using fireflies as a constant motif, which in many cultures has a supernatural significance, only heightens the sense of magic realism.
But beyond the surface of magic realism, “The Fable” very meticulously examines the underlying tension between different classes in the village. Dev’s (Manoj Bajpayee) family are the owners of the apple estate, handed to them by the colonial rulers of the country.

Eva Mendes says the only movie project that would persuade her to return to acting is one alongside her husband Ryan Gosling.
The couple have appeared in two films together, Drunk History Christmas (2011) and The Place Beyond the Pines (2012)
Mendes, whose other hits include Training Day (2001), Hitch (2005) and The Other Guys (2010), walked away from the industry in 2014, and she explained in an interview with The Sunday Times newspaper that it wasn’t a challenge for her to leave the profession:
“I was never in love with acting. I don’t mean this in a self-deprecating way, but I wasn’t a great actress. I had my moments when I worked with really great people.”
And she said she was proudest of the two projects she shared with Gosling: “He gets something out of me that’s never been accessible before.”

The Madhesh Crisis of Nepal, whereby the Madhesh communities would launch a political movement for identity and equal rights, becomes the backdrop for “Pooja, Sir” (2024). More specifically the 2015 Madhesh Movement becomes the substrate on which this taut police procedural takes place.
Amidst this politically tumultuous environment of 2015, Inspector Pooja Thapa is deployed from Kathmandu to the border town of Rajgunj to investigate the kidnapping of two children in broad daylight, in the middle of a political proceeding. The investigation is heavily integrated within the political standpoint because one of the kids kidnapped is the son of a Madheshi politician, who had married a light-skinned woman to enjoy an upper-echelon status in society. The politician’s wife is also the headmistress of the school where the two kids studied. The politician is not the most popular in his community, while the rescuing of this child is the priority of the police chief.

Though he lent his voice to the What If…? series, Chadwick Boseman’s final live-action appearance in the MCU was in Avengers: Endgame. Everyone remembers his royal entrance into the Battle with Thanos as he comes through the golden spirals along with other heroes who had been victims of the snap.
While his last moment in the MCU was a brief glimpse at Tony Stark’s funeral, a now-surfaced deleted scene reportedly extends this. Fans seem annoyed that Marvel deleted the scene, which reportedly shows T’Challa and Doctor Strange discussing future threats and how to defend the world.

2024 has given us many impressive independent projects with distinct voices. Be it “Didi,” “Thelma,” or “A Real Pain,” they have proven to be more captivating than the buzzier titles. India Donaldson’s “Good One” is another glowing addition to this list that revolves around three characters: 17-year-old Sam (Lily Collias), her middle-aged father Chris (James Le Gros), and his close friend Matt (Danny McCarthy), who decide to go on a hike together. At the last moment, Matt’s son bails out on this plan, leaving Sam alone with the two men.
As they start traveling, we learn bits about their lives – their worldviews, behaviors, and preferences. Chris and Matt are products of an era where men were often conditioned to be unfeeling, insensitive, and stamina-flaunting. So, you are either a winner or a loser. There’s no in-between. In case you’re a mediocre man or not as strong in judgemental eyes,...

Salem's Lot is widely regarded as one of Stephen King's best - and perhaps more importantly, most terrifying - novels, which is why the new adaptation currently streaming on Max simply didn't cut it for the majority of fans and critics.
The movie follows the basic premise, but does not flesh out the main characters enough and is seriously lacking in scares and gore (pretty much every kill takes place off-screen) despite the R rating. It also leaves out some major story elements, including Ben Mears' childhood connection to the Marsten House.
In the book, this haunted house is almost a character in its own right, and is the source of evil in the town of Jerusalem's Lot that attracts Kurt Barlow and Richard Straker in the first place. Ben is left traumatized after sneaking into the house as a child, and returns to "The Lot" to confront his...

To say that the Academy has historically been biased against people of color would be a major understatement. Since the Oscars were founded in 1929, only 23 Black people have won across all four acting categories, and the numbers really aren't better in the other categories either. Telluride- The third of three celebrated August Wilson plays to make it to the big screen over the past decade, “The Piano Lesson” is one that many would expect might be the most difficult to adapt. The long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot from director Gary Dauberman (Annabelle Comes Home) is finally seeing release later this year, with a Vanity Fair preview piece today revealing that it’s going straight-to-streaming on Max in October 2024.
Check out a series of first-look images below and see more on Vanity Fair now.
“You could do a very dry version of this movie, but that’s just not my personality,” Gary Dauberman tells the outlet, previewing his vision for the classic Stephen King horror story. “It’s trying to ride that wave’s ups and downs. You’re having fun with it, and then you can have a scare, and then you’re having fun again. Hopefully it feels like a complete ride at the end.”
Originally set for theatrical release on September 9, 2022, the new Stephen King adaptation was recently bumped to April 21, 2023, before getting ejected from the theatrical slate.
