Image
Columbia Pictures has emerged victorious in a multi-studio bidding war for the rights to The Earthling, a short story by Jonathan Marty. Deadline reports that Columbia paid mid six-figures.

Final Destination Bloodlines helmers Zach Lipovsky & Adam Stein are attached to direct and executive produce the film.

Chronology’s Eric Heisserer and Carmen Lewis (“Shadow and Bone”) will produce alongside 1201 Films’ Scott Glassgold.

Although plot details are being kept under wraps, it’s said to be a survival sci-fi story with shades of The Martian and Edge of Tomorrow.

The Dead Boy Detectives Should Have Had a Cameo in The Sandman Before It Signed Off
Image
One of the most devastating cancellations last year was Dead Boy Detectives.

This show, set in The Sandman universe, follows the adventures of the Dead Boy Detectives agency led by Charles and Edwin, a pair of ghost boys, along with their friends Crystal, a psychic, and Niko.

When Netflix announced that the show would not be returning for a Season 2, fans were obviously devastated.

(Ed Araquel/Netflix)

However, the streamer ordered another season for The Sandman, though Season 2 for this show would be its last.

So, fans held out hope that our favorite ghost boys would make a brief appearance.

Unfortunately, Netflix let us down yet again. Talk about rubbing salt in the wound.

Big Brother Spoilers: Eviction Votes Locked In as Houseguests Set Next Week’s Targets
Image
It’s been quite the week in the Big Brother house, and somehow, it seems like the insanity was only the tip of the iceberg.

As TV Fanatic previously reported, Mickey activated her power and took control of the game.

Initially, she made an enemy in Rylie, who publicly trashed her to anyone that would listen and branded her a “liar.”

(CBS/Screenshot)

The distance between them heightened somewhat when Mickey put him on the block, alongside Kelley and Keanu.

Then, the impossible happened. The pair started to form a bond and seemed to be allies in the house.

(Sara Mally ©2025 CBS Broadcasting, Inc)

Keanu won the Golden Power of Veto and – as expected – removed himself from the block on Monday at the Veto meeting.

Jimmy is the Big Target on Big Brother

Then, in the biggest blindside of the season, Mickey replaced Keanu with her alliance member, Jimmy.

Taron Egerton's New Crime Movie Recalls One Of The Best Movies Ever Made
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Stop me if you've heard this one before. A drifter or outlaw is on a perilous journey with a young partner, who is either his literal or spiritual son/daughter. It's a common formula not tied to any specific genre. You can see it in gangster movies ("Road to Perdition"), Westerns ("True Grit"), science-fiction, superhero stories ("Logan") and more.

The best version of it isn't an action story but a road trip black comedy: Peter Bogdanovich's "Paper Moon," about con artist Moze Pray and his maybe daughter Addie (Ryan and Tatum O'Neal) driving through Great Depression-era Kansas. The legacy of "Paper Moon" lives on to this day. It has inspired recent stories including a key episode of "Andor," and the new Neo-Western crime thriller, "She Rides Shotgun."

Based on Jordan Harper's page-turning, bite-sized novel, "She Rides Shotgun" begins...

The Day After Ncuti Gatwa Called His Stint ‘Strenuous’, Doctor Who Writer Pitches to Let the Franchise Rest
Image
After Ncuti Gatwa’s statement about leading Doctor Who being a strenuous job, former writer of the show Mark Gatiss said that the series should go on a hiatus. Gatiss wrote several episodes for the revived show and has had an obsession with the series since his childhood, having written for magazines and producing a documentary on Doctor Who.

Gatiss, who also played multiple roles in the show, mentioned that the series had survived a hiatus before, and maybe it was time for another one (via Prospect Magazine).

It’s been back for 20 years, which is an awfully long time. Almost as long as its original run. That’s pretty spectacular. So maybe it’s time for another rest. I really don’t know. I only know that I still love the show with all my heart.

Doctor Who’s future is currently unclear as the series grapples with low...

The Overlooked Pedro Pascal Sci-Fi Movie You Need To Watch After The Last Of Us
Image
This article contains spoilers for "The Last of Us."

"The Last of Us" will be returning for season 3 on HBO, but Pedro Pascal's Joel will not return barring any further flashbacks.

The vengeful Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) murders Joel in "The Last of Us" season 2's second episode. He definitely won't be forgotten — Ellie (Bella Ramsey) is now out for revenge herself, and the show's fans are similarly mourning. But if you're still hungry for a science-fiction story about Pedro Pascal partnered up with a young child, you have other options. And no, I don't mean "The Mandalorian."

The 2018 science-fiction film "Prospect" stars Pascal as Ezra, a loquacious and morally dubious miner on a frontier world. Directed by Zeek Earl & Chris Caldwell, the star of "Prospect" is a teenage girl named Cee (Sophie Thatcher). Cee and her prospector father Damon (Jay Duplass) land on a forested moon, "The Green," to mine for valuable gems.

Dennis Quaid's Forgotten $31 Million Turn-of-the-Century Sci-Fi Is a Streaming Success 25 Years On
Image
After appearing in Coralie Fargeat's Oscar-winning The Substance last year, and more recently starring alongside Wyatt RussellinBroke, Hollywood veteran Dennis Quaidis proving that, even after 50 years since his uncredited debut role as a bellhop in Crazy Mama, nothing is going to slow him down. With the 71-year-old Golden Globe nominee still a huge name across the world, it seems his extensive back catalog continues to catch the eye, with the latest in his storied career to achieve streaming attention one of the more underrated in his filmography.

Currently one of the top 10 most-streamed titles on Tubi, Frequency is somewhat of a forgotten hit for Quaid, with this turn-of-the-century sci-fi managing to prove impressive both critically and with audiences. Receiving a "certified fresh" 70% critics' score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Frequency boasts an even better 81% audience rating. Impressively, this isn't even the highest-rated movie for Quaid of said year, with...

Image
History from the ground up — the stories you didn’t learn, the people you never knew, shaping history in ways you never expected.

Launching on 20th March 2025, Journey Through Time uncovers the overlooked, forgotten, and untold sides of history — from hidden stories to new angles on events we thought we knew. Each episode weaves the monumental with the personal. “We don’t just tell you what happened in the past; we want to show you what it felt to live through it,” says Co-host Olusoga. “Like the programs I make on TV, this show will uncover the sorts of history that didn’t take place in parliament or palaces. IMDb Interviews Three Stars to Watch in 2025
Production art
To kick off the new year, IMDb invited three of Hollywood’s rising young talents for its first-ever roundtable interview, “Stars to Watch Spotlight.” Moderated by IMDb producer Tre Wesley, the half-hour video features actors Rhenzy Feliz (“The Penguin,” Encanto), Isabela Merced (Alien: Romulus, Madame Web), and Sophie Thatcher (“Yellowjackets,” Heretic) discussing their breakout performances, their first IMDb credit, industry leaders they’d love to work with, and more.

Audiences can see Isabela Merced in two of 2025’s most anticipated titles: Superman and Season 2 of “The Last of Us.” In addition to last year’s Alien: Romulus and Madame Web, she has starred in Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Transformers: The Last Knight, and Sicario: Day of the Soldado.

Sophie Thatcher was recently in A24’s Heretic and can be seen next in Season 3 of the Showtime series “Yellowjackets” and Companion. Her previous acting credits include “The Book of Boba Fett,” MaXXXine, The Boogeyman, and Prospect.

Rhenzy Feliz recently co-starred with Colin Farrell in “The Penguin,” playing Oswald Cobb’s henchman-in-training, Victor. He also provided the voice for Camilo in Disney’s Encanto. Next on the horizon for Feliz is director Kelly Reichert’s crime drama The Mastermind.

Heretic Cast & Character Guide
Image
Heretic's cast may be small, giving the actors in the film plenty of room to bring their characters to life. Directed and written by A Quiet Place scribes Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the thriller is focused on a pair of young missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who accept an invitation to the home of the seemingly genial Mr. Reed. As their initially pleasant conversation simultaneously grows more personal and abstract, the two young women realize the true danger they've stepped into.

Heretic is a great horror film and has earned some of the highest accolades of star Hugh Grant's career. The movie thrives on his performance, which shifts from funny to chilling and back again with startling effectiveness. Grant has a pair of up-and-coming stars opposite him, who prove more than capable of keeping up with the seasoned movie star. It's a...

Yellowjackets Season 2 Premiere Shatters Streaming Records for Showtime
Yellowjackets (2021)
Yellowjackets is back and breaking more records for Showtime, and we're not surprised.

The series burst onto the scene in 2021, delivering a compelling concept and fine acting, becoming one of the buzziest shows on the air.

The anticipation for Yellowjackets Season 2 was off the charts, so the show would inevitably continue to scale new heights.

But how well did Yellowjackets Season 2 Episode 1 perform?

Showtime has revealed that the highly-anticipated return secured nearly 2 million viewers across platforms.

According to the premium cabler, that number marks the best season two premiere for the network in more than 10 years and nearly double the series premiere audience.

"Yellowjackets broke records as the most streamed Showtime debut ever thanks to Ashley, Bart, Jonathan and our extraordinary ensemble cast who brought season two to even greater heights," said Chris McCarthy, President/CEO, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios & Paramount Media Networks.

‘Yellowjackets’ Season 2 Premiere Draws Nearly 2M Viewers, Breaks Showtime Streaming Record
Image
The Season 2 premiere of Yellowjackets delivered Showtime‘s best debut for a second installment that the network has seen in more than 10 years.

Sunday’s episode raked in nearly 2M viewers across all platforms, according to Showtime. The network didn’t provide a specific viewing number. It’s difficult to compare the first and second season launches, because similar data isn’t available for the Season 1 debut. The Season 1 finale drew 1.3M viewers.

Season 1, which earned a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes and received seven Emmy nominations, averaged more than 5M weekly viewers across platforms, the highest for a freshman series on the network in almost six years, since Billions in early 2016. It was the second-most streamed series in Showtime history.

With the debut of Season 2, Yellowjackets now holds the title for the No. 1 season debut for Showtime on digital platforms, beating out Dexter: New Blood for the honor.

Yellowjackets Season 2 Trailer Reveals Chilling Revelations, and Teases Plenty of Horror
Yellowjackets (2021)
The tightly-woven mysteries at the center of Yellowjackets are about to be exposed.

Showtime dropped the official trailer for Yellowjackets Season 2 on Thursday, and it looks like a stellar follow-up to the first season.

The trailer is chilling and offers excellent insight into what to expect in the coming episodes.

It also features Florence + The Machine's cover of "Just a Girl," which was inspired by the show.

"Once upon a time, there was a place called the wilderness," we hear in the trailer.

"It was beautiful. But it was also violent and misunderstood and it waited and waited to befriend whoever arrived."

"The whole time, there was some darkness out there," adult Natalie (Juliette Lewis) says.

"I thought we left it there when we were rescued, but now I realize, we brought it back with us," adult Lottie (Simone Kessell) says in the clip.

We also hear Misty and Natalie speak about Lottie.

Pedro Pascal Has Perfected the "Man on the Run With a Child" Trope
Image
If Pedro Pascal appears in one more project where he is reluctantly on the run with a child, we're going to officially call it a sub-genre, or maybe even its own genre. Pairing Pascal as the reluctant babysitter with young performers has become kind of a trend. With shows like HBOs new hit The Last of Us, the Disney+ stalwart The Mandalorian, and the 2018 film Prospect, the 47-year-old Chilean-born actor has been paired with two young teenage girls and little Grogu, a child learning to harness his immense powers using the Force. This is not a bad thing, mind you, and we're here for it. All three of the projects have been terrific, dramatic offerings that have done very well. There's something about Pascal and his somewhat curmudgeonly demeanor that plays quite well off of the exuberance and naivete of a young sidekick. While all three roles have that in common,...

Pedro Pascal Cried Even When He Wasn't On Camera In The Last Of Us Episode 6's Most Emotional Scene
Image
This post contains spoilers for "The Last of Us" season 1, episode 6, "Kin."

Truly, Pedro Pascal's dad powers know no bounds. Whether he's using them to elevate the film around him (like in "Prospect") or deploying them to act under a mask (as in "The Mandalorian"), the man can play a gruff, grumpy father or a stoic-loner-turned-adopted-parent with a heart of gold like nobody's business. Really, the only thing he's better at than playing laconic dads might be playing fast-talking, disapproving mothers.

While HBO's "The Last of Us" has yet to call upon Pascal to utilize that particular set of skills, it has nevertheless afforded him the chance to showcase his full range as an actor while still operating firmly in irascible dad mode. Yet, even after five episodes of dramatic storytelling ranging from bittersweet to devastating, few scenes have allowed Pascal to shine quite like a key moment in episode 6, "Kin.

Joel's Emotional Last Of Us Episode 6 Scene Proves That Pedro Pascal Can Do No Wrong
Image
This post contains spoilers for "The Last of Us" season 1, episode 6, "Kin."

As a massive fan of the original games, one of the more rewarding aspects of watching "The Last of Us" be retold in live action is seeing lead actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey add their own personal flair to our beloved pair, Joel and Ellie. On paper, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have kept the show extremely faithful to the original games, story, and characters. However, because Ramsey and Pascal were discouraged from playing the games before embodying their roles, they've been able to imbue their own subtle reinterpretations and trademarks into their performances.

Ramsey has consistently nailed it as Ellie, stealing every moment and dramatic beat of the series so far with a youthful pluckiness and emotional edge that is reminiscent of, but totally distinct from, Ashley Johnson's original motion-capture performance of the character.

Death In Space Is A Sci-Fi Horror RPG That Lets You Have A Good Time Simulating A Bad Time
Image
(Welcome to Cardboard Cinema, an ongoing series where we look at board games inspired by or connected to our favorite media. In this edition, we look at an RPG that offers the ultimate horror/science fiction roleplaying experience.)

As a child of the '80s, I entered a cultural landscape where space horror was firing on every cylinder. From the "Alien" franchise to VHS staples like "Screamers," the '80s were an excellent time for horror movies of all budgets. Even now, as director-driven science fiction has become the norm, there's still the occasional "The Cloverfield Paradox" or "Life" to spark our appetite for monster movies with plenty of crawlspaces but a significant lack of oxygen.

And now, with tabletop roleplaying games like "Alien: The Roleplaying Game" and "Mothership" earning great reviews, there has never been a better time to launch your forays into the darkness of space. Of course,...

Welcome to The Fringe - The Exciting New Cinematic Universe Coming from the Makers of Prospect
Something very special is coming from the creators of Prospect (review). Directors Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell are kickstarting one of the coolest looking new cinematic universes via an Nft drop and if you are not convinced by all the amazing and meticulously detailed material and thoughtful backstory they've created for it, I don't know what to tell you.

The world they are created looks to be set within the same one as Prospect, one owing to the western tradition of lawlessness and populated by miners, engineers, bounty hunters, trappers and mercenaries.

SXSW 2022 Interview: Co-Writer/Director Tom Gormican and Co-Writer Kevin Etten on Celebrating Nicolas Cage’s Awesomeness with The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent, Pedro Pascal’s Enthusiasm, and More
Image
This past weekend, the 2022 SXSW Film Festival hosted the world premiere of the meta genre-bending comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which was directed by Tom Gormican and co-written by Gormican and Kevin Etten. The story is set around the iconic cinematic phenom known as Nicolas Cage, who is down on his luck and decides to take a gig where he’s paid to show up at a superfan’s (played by Pedro Pascal) birthday party and ends up getting mixed up in some governmental espionage where things get just a little too “real” for Cage and his new best pal.

While in Austin, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with both Gormican and Etten following the premiere of Massive Talent about the unusual project and whether or not they ever thought about what would happen if Cage had turned down playing a version of himself for the film.

Pedro Pascal, Jay Duplass, Sophie Thatcher, and Ben Little in Prospect : L'Ambre de la lune verte (2018)
Must Watch: This Teaser for a New Sci-Fi Project Called 'The Fringe'
Pedro Pascal, Jay Duplass, Sophie Thatcher, and Ben Little in Prospect : L'Ambre de la lune verte (2018)
Whoaaaa! This looks awesome. There's a badass new project in the works from the two talented filmmakers Zeek Earl & Chris Caldwell, best known for turning their short into a feature film called Prospect. Their latest idea is called The Fringe, and it's essentially a new "sci-fi, cinematic universe" set in space following scavengers or freelancers called Drifters: miners, engineers, bounty hunters, trappers, mercenaries, gastrotechs. They've decided to dip into NFTs to try "new model of film financing that will put full creative control back into the hands of the film's artistic team." The Nft collection will be comprised of in-world characters called Drifters. "The Nft project will be an immersive narrative experience that will introduce fans to the universe in novel ways, creating a portal into the world’s lore via the art and other integrated mediums like an in-world compendium." Sounds cool. There's a teaser out for The...

Animaniacs (2020)
Hulu New Releases: November 2021
Animaniacs (2020)
As the Hollywood blockbuster machine continues to dust itself off and release some early winter hits, Hulu is going in a bit of a different direction with its list of new releases for November 2021.

There are no big Hulu original films of note this month. Instead there’s a whole host of original series. The TV parade starts on Nov. 5 with the release of Animaniacs season 2. Also getting a second season this month is monarchal comedy The Great on Nov. 19. The most intriguing series, however, is animated Marvel comedy Marvel’s Hit Monkey. As its name so graciously implies, this is a show about a hit monkey…as in monkey assassin. Naturally the hit monkey is haunted by the ghost of Jason Sudeikis because it’s important that everything make sense.

Though Hulu doesn’t have any original movies in November, its list of library movie titles is quite vast.

‘Yellowjackets’ Trailer: Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci Lead Showtime Drama from ‘Narcos’ Team
Image
The first television project from Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, two of the producers behind “Narcos” and “Narcos: Mexico,” is nearly here. The duo’s “Yellowjackets” series is slated to premiere November 14 on Showtime.

The premium network recently revealed the trailer for the upcoming 10-episode survival drama, along with the official description:

Equal parts survival epic, psychological horror story and coming-of-age drama, “Yellowjackets” is the saga of a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans, while also tracking the lives they’ve attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later, proving that the past is never really past and what began out in the wilderness is far from over.

The series’ trailer aptly plays on the disparate themes of “Yellowjacket.

Balthazar Getty in L'Île oubliée (1990)
Showtime’s upcoming survival drama “Yellowjackets” put its young cast through the ringer, forcing them to confront tough environments and psychologically taxing scenarios to tell the story of a girls soccer team whose plane crashes in the remote northern wilderness.

The “Lord of the Flies”-esque series unfolds across two timelines, with the teenage version of the central cast trying to survive in the wilderness and their fully grown selves attempting to piece back together their lives 25 years later. The drama, led by Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis, Melanie Lynskey and Tawny Cypress, is described as “equal parts survival epic, psychological horror story and coming-of-age drama.”

“We knew we didn’t want this to be a show about what happened, but about why it happened,” series co-creator Ashley Lyle said, previewing the show during a Television Critics Association panel on Wednesday. “And so we figured the best way to do that...

How One Reddit Community Is Finding the Next Generation of Screenwriters and Novelists
Image
Freelance animator Marcus Kliewer was already having a rough year when the pandemic hit. Supported by a Canadian unemployment program, the Vancouver resident decided to pour his energy into writing short horror stories and posting them on Reddit’s r/nosleep community.

The 28-year-old posted his first story of the pandemic in September. Three months later, his work was discovered by Ground Control Entertainment’s Scott Glassgold. In June, Netflix announced a screen-rights deal for his story “We Used to Live Here,” with Blake Lively attached to star and produce alongside Ground Control and Matt Reeves’ 6th & Idaho.

“If it wasn’t for Cerb (the unemployment program), I would be landscaping right now,” Kliewer told IndieWire. “Instead, I was writing six days a week full time.”

Kliewer said he also made a two book, high-six-figure deal with a major publishing company; he’s not saying which one, since it’s yet to be announced.

What’s New on DVD in June: Marlon Riggs, ‘The Nest,’ ‘90210,’ ‘Saw 4K’ and More
Marlon Riggs
Must of the Month

A great way to celebrate Pride this year is with The Signifyin’ Works of Marlon Riggs, a Criterion Collection box set that pays tribute to an essential voice in LGBTQ+ cinema and Black filmmaking. Before his death of HIV/AIDS complications in 1994, Riggs created a vital body of work that includes the sensual and poetic “Tongues Untied” — a film decried on the senate floor by Jesse Helms, and recommendations don’t come much higher — the incisive documentary “Color Adjustment,” about the history of Black characters on American TV, and brilliantly moving personal and experimental films like “Black Is… Black Ain’t” and “Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien (No Regrets).” This compilation of a singular artistic voice belongs in every library.
