Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! (1976)
** (out of 4)
Everyone knows about the notorious 1978 film but here's a short that was made two years earlier by John De Bello and many of the other cast and crew that would turn up in the feature. This film was shot on 8mm and basically has a bunch of people finding their fate when the tomatoes break free and start to do their thing. There's nothing overly good here but at the same time it's not all that interesting. Well, I guess it'll be interesting to fans of the feature film who want to see an earlier version. Some of the ideas here are used in the feature film but this film lacks the (bad) charm of what would follow.

Before the killer tomatoes get to the big screen, the idea began as a student film that shows many ideas, dialogues, and scenes that would be used in the movie. It certainly has the humor, but the short film is just a draft. It's actually much badder than the feature film. The illumination, production, acting, and story are bad in many senses. It's pretty normal that happens in a student film, but at least served to start creating the movie. In fact, the movie looks much better than the short film. Certain, there are limitations for being a student film, and that's why it's hard to see the tomatoes in action. If there is something good that can be said about this short film as that can be found interesting to those who love the killer tomatoes franchise and want to meet its original seed. My final rating for this short film is a 2/10.
