This interview, part of our Cannes 2025 coverage, was originally published in the Notebook Special, a limited-edition print publication distributed at the Cannes Film Festival.Far from Heaven. One could be forgiven for feeling a bit wistful celebrating Todd Haynes’s extraordinary career in 2025. The 64-year-old American director is about to receive the Carrosse d’Or at the Directors’ Fortnight, the festival’s version of a lifetime achievement award, and it’s a reflective moment to honor an artist whose films, from the start, so provocatively confronted the evils of the times in which they were made. With epochal experiments like Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (1987), Poison (1991), and Safe (1995), Haynes broke out against a backdrop of extreme crisis—the AIDS epidemic and the political iniquity carried out in its wake—and any consideration of his filmography remains inseparable from these sociopolitical realities. Upon release, Poison became a central pawn in the...

We knew the day would eventually come, but man, do we wish we had more time. All eight seasons of Dexter will reportedly be leaving Netflix this June. With licensed content, streaming platforms often rotate titles as deals expire, and unfortunately, that means beloved series can disappear from your watchlist overnight.
Netflix's streaming rights for the popular crime drama are nearing their end, and unless a new deal is struck, Dexter will be gone from the streaming platform this summer. The current departure date is set for Thursday, June 19, 2025, which means the last day to stream all eight seasons will be Wednesday, June 18.
So, if you’ve been meaning to revisit the chilling world of Dexter Morgan or finally watch the series, now’s the perfect time to binge before it's removed. No one likes being caught off guard when their favorite show suddenly disappears. Don't let this happen to you with Dexter.

The John Wickfranchise revolutionized the action genre with its signature "Gun-Fu" fighting style, but Jason Statham almost stole it a few years earlier. Beginning with the release of the eponymous film in 2014, the series tells the story of a retired assassin who is pressed back into action after criminals destroy his newfound happy life. Though the simple revenge plot has been done a million times before, it was director Chad Stahelski's blend of martial arts and gunplay that made the action sequences jump off the screen.
Naturally, a string of sequels followed in the ensuing decade, and John Wick has even been spun off into TV shows, and standalone films. Outside their obvious box-office appeal, the franchise is also important because its approach to action and stylized visuals have become the go-to for Hollywood cinema. Nearly every big-budget action film made since has borrowed the franchise's neon-drenched aesthetic and its approach to fight choreography.

The John Wick franchise has become known for its incredible stunts and fight choreography, including what has become known as “gun-fu.” While gun fights and hand-to-hand combat seem to be commonplace in the world of action movies now, when the Wachowskis brought the idea to mainstream in The Matrix, it was just the beginning of where it would later go thanks to Chad Stahelski and the John Wick franchise. But it could have actually been Jason Stathamwho first got to embrace Stahelski’s brand of “gun-fu” before Keanu Reeves’ assassin had the chance.
While speaking to SlashFilm about the new John Wick documentary Wick is Pain, Stahelski revealed that Statham’s movie Safe almost became the pioneer of a punch-kick-shoot style of fighting rather than John Wick. The director went on to explain that the reason it didn’t happen was that Statham’s movie was just too grounded to incorporate the elaborate fight sequences.

When "John Wick" blasted into theaters on October 24, 2014, moviegoers lost their minds over the film's inventive amalgam of hand-to-hand combat and gunplay. It was doubly impressive due to Keanu Reeves' seemingly effortless facility for performing many of his own stunts. Obviously, no one was surprised that the star of "The Matrix" franchise could brawl and shoot convincingly, but the degree of difficulty appeared to be off the charts. Just when you think you've seen every possible iteration of martial arts combat on screen, along comes stuntman-turned-director Chad Stahelski to show action junkies that there's still plenty of room for throwdown innovation.
If you're a hardcore fan of the genre, you know that filmmakers have blended these gunplay and hand-to-hand combat before. The Wachowskis first introduced the idea in "The Matrix," which inspired Kurt Wimmer to go utterly gonzo by inventing "gun kata" in his ludicrously entertaining "Equilibrium." Wimmer was so...

It’s been more than five years since Modern Family ended in 2020, and Ariel Winter, who played Alex Dunphy on all 11 seasons of the show, has mostly retreated from the spotlight. The actress moved from Los Angeles to Nashville with her boyfriend, Luke Benward, in 2022, and spoke to People in a rare interview about what she’s up to now. “I didn’t leave the industry,” she confirmed. It's been far too long since the most recent season of House of the Dragon concluded on HBO, and the wait for new episodes rages on and on, but at least we're continuing to receive news about what's to come in season 3. As filming continues on the highly anticipated third season, we just learned about three new cast members who have been cast in some key roles.
Revenge alum Barry Sloane joins the cast as Ser Adrian Redfort, who is one of the members of Rhaenyra Targaryen's Queensguard. Sloane has also appeared in shows like Hollyoaks, Longmire, Shameless, Six, and he will also appear in the upcoming second and final of The Sandman on Netflix. But as a Revenge fan, I know him best as Emily Thorne's former flame Aiden Mathis.
House of the Dragon season 3 also adds Tom Cullen as Ser Luthor Largent, who's a commander for the City Watch of King's Landing.

If you watch a lot of thrillers on Netflix, chances are you've come across the Harlan Coben collection. Yes, Netflix actually calls it that. It's a lineup of 10 twisty, binge-worthy mystery shows based on Coben’s bestselling novels and one original series. However, it's worth mentioning that while some are excellent, others might not hit the same mark. That being said, if you’re looking for the best of the bunch, Fool Me Once should be the one you prioritize. Let me tell you why.
First off, it's an adaptation of arguably one of Coben's best books. The 2016 novel is a perfect blend of suspense, mystery, and unexpected twists, which translates seamlessly into the Netflix show. That might have something to do with Danny Brocklehurst being the creative to adapt the book to series. He previously worked as a writer on the Coben series adaptations The Stranger and Stay Close.

If you're a fan of thrillers, Netflix has no shortage of options, especially with its selection of Harlan Coben adaptations. Coben, known for his suspenseful novels, has become a popular name in the streaming world with many of his books turned into Netflix shows. However, not all of them live up to the hype.
As of right now, there are 10 television series adaptations and one original series of his currently streaming on Netflix. They are Safe, Stay Close, The Innocent, The Stranger, Gone for Good, The Woods, Hold Tight, Missing You, Caught, Fool Me Once and Just One Look. While each of these series has its share of twists and surprises, not all of them succeed in maintaining your interest or keeping the momentum strong throughout. Some may leave you hooked for a few episodes, only to disappoint with predictable plotlines, pacing issues, underdeveloped characters, or unsatisfying conclusions.

Before she played Jessica Pearson in fan-favorite legal drama Suits, Gina Torres played Zoë Alleyne Washburne in the cult hit Firefly. Fans were unfortunate to have experienced the series for only a single season, but Torres and other cast members were able to leave a lasting impression.
Torres knew the exact moment in the series that made her fall in love with the series. It is one of the exchanges between the captain of the Serenity ship, Malcolm Reynolds, and his second-in-command, a conversation that is revered by the Browncoats.

The French Directors’ Guild (Srf) will fete U.S. director Todd Haynes with its honorary Carrosse d’Or (Golden Carriage) award at the upcoming edition of its Cannes Directors’ Fortnight.
Haynes will receive the prize at the opening ceremony of the parallel section, running alongside the main Cannes Film Festival from May 14 to 22.
The honor follows Haynes’ recent stint as president of the jury at the Berlinale in February.
The Srf highlighted Haynes place heart at the American counterculture and his legacy of challenging social, sexual or artistic norms.
“From Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story to Safe, Velvet Goldmine, Carol and May December, your films have been inhabited by a great faith in cinema’s experimental and narrative possibilities,” the Srf board wrote in a letter explaining their motivation for the award.
“Your genius is to move and mesmerize us in a single move, combining Formal virtuoso with infinite empathy and tenderness.

Jason Statham wasn’t always an action movie legend. He started out as a competitive diver, and even modeled for Tommy Hilfiger and Levi’s. But as soon as he made his big screen debut in Guy Ritchie’s “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” it was obvious. A star was being born.
Statham’s gravely voice, martial arts talent and toned physique served him well, and he quickly became one of the most recognizable action heroes of the 21st century, starring in billion dollar blockbusters and quirky crime thrillers, with a smattering of tough as nails or just plain weird genre films in the middle. And sometimes he also pokes fun at his grizzled persona, proving that he’s having just as much fun as we are.
Not every Jason Statham movie is great, but a lot of them are better than they get credit for. And even the silly ones are often 100% pure Statham.

Ever since Jason Statham shot to stardom, I’ve found myself quite the fan. Whether it’s Crank, The Transporter, or Safe, I dig the guy. And his latest, the David Ayer directed A Working Man, happens to offer a fun time with the on-screen action. Jason Statham portrays Levon Cade, a good dad and a construction worker. However, when a local girl is taken, he decides to help out a friend, and retool his special skills. Yep, the dude has a history in the world of counter-terrorism. The film also stars Michael Pena, Jason Flemyng, and David Harbour.
We recently had the pleasure of speaking one on one with both Mr. Harbour and Mr. Ayer. For David, he discussed working with Ayer and Statham. And while he has a smaller role, the actor commands the screen every single time. As for Ayer, we talked about taking on an action...

Harlan Coben novels are always an experience. But when the bestseller author works with three long-time friends and creative collaborators to move their setting from the U.S. to the U.K. and adapt his stories for the screen, they are looking to make them into an entirely different experience altogether. Case in point: Netflix’s 2024 hit Fool Me Once, starring Michelle Keegan, Adeel Akhtar, Dino Fetscher, Richard Armitage and Joanna Lumley, which was the streamer’s biggest show of the year and garnered 12 billion viewing minutes.
“I call us The Core Four,” Coben tells THR on a Zoom call, where he is joined by the three others he’s referring to: star producer Nicola Shindler, CEO and executive producer at Quay Street Productions, the production firm, part of ITV Studios, that has been producing the hit Coben series; Quay Street head of drama and executive producer Richard Fee, and writer Danny Brocklehurst.

In an exclusive interview with Variety, bestselling author Harlan Coben sat down alongside director-showrunner Miguel Cohan (“No Return”) to drill down on the first Latin American Netflix adaptation of one of his multiple novels, “Caught,” (“Atrapados”).
Speaking on Zoom from Buenos Aires, Coben was full of praise for the work Cohan and his team had done on the mini-series adaptation for Netflix, set to debut worldwide on March 26. “What I love about this project is the idea of taking a novel by an American author and blending it with Argentine sensibilities – especially their incredible talent and unique settings,” he said.
He took a hands-off approach to the re-version, trusting them implicitly on their ability to adapt his work to an Argentine backdrop.

Jason Statham is one of the most bankable action stars when it comes to making repeated appearances on free streaming charts with his older movies. Despite many of these movies being panned by critics, being originally released over a decade ago, and appearing on multiple streaming platforms simultaneously, it is hard not to stumble across one of them when looking at lists of what people are watching. Statham’s brand of loud, brash, and brutal action movie has found a perfect home on free streaming charts, with movies like The Mechanic, Parker, and many others appearing time and time again. Now, the 2012 movie Safe is once again beating up the competition on Freevee.
While audiences usually cannot get enough of the British actor, critics have always been a little more skeptical about the films he leads. Safe is one of the rare occasions that audiences and critics were completely unanimous...

Jason Stathamhas starred in countless action thrillers over the years, and one that’s more than 10 years old has made a triumphant return to streaming charts. Statham stars alongside Robert John Burke (Law & Order: Svu) in Safe, the 2012 one-person-army film following an ex-cage fighter, Luke (Statham), who comes to the aid of Mei (Catherine Chang), a young girl who is being hunted by the same Triads who destroyed his life. Gerard Butler’s no-nonsense action turn as “Big Nick” O’Brien has become one of his best genre roles of the last 20 years, and having recently seen its sequel rip up the box office, Den of Thieves is now surging up not one, but two free streaming charts. The gritty heist thriller is no stranger to streaming success, but this is the first time it has been stealing its way to the top of both the Freevee and Tubi chart simultaneously.
Den of Thieves was a hit for Butler in 2018, and while fans had to wait seven years to see the sequel roll out at the beginning of 2025, the first movie has been pleasing action fans on streaming platforms for the last few years. Currently, it is holding the number one spot on Freevee, and the number three spot on Tubi, although it would not be surprising to see it...

During a talk held in Berlin’s Hebbel am Ufer theater, Berlinale jury president Todd Haynes shed light on how his filmmaking craft evolved from Superstar and Safe to Carol, as well as how Mark Ruffalo brought him a career-changing script.
Held in conjunction with Berlinale Talents, the evening opened with a clip of Haynes’ 1995 film Safe, starring Julianne Moore — a film which Haynes picked out as one of the most formative experiences of his career.
“I would like to preface this by saying that I think three films inaugurated my career, and all three of them dealt with illness and pathology,” said Haynes. “They are Superstar, Poison and Safe, and each film approaches those themes in very different ways”
Haynes elaborated on his inspiration behind the still-banned film Superstar: The Karen Carpenter, made in 1987, where he used Barbie dolls to narrate the life of Karen Carpenter, set to The Carpenters’ music.

On the heels of Harlan Coben's new Netflix show, Missing You, which premiered on New Year's Day, Netflix shared two interesting updates about the cast and filming start of Run Away, one of the upcoming Harlan Coben Netflix shows.
James Nesbitt, who also starred in Missing You and Stay Close, two of the three most recent of Coben's Netflix shows, will star in Run Away. Ruth Jones and Minnie Driver will join Nesbitt, according to Netflix.
In the series, Nesbitt stars as Simon Greene, a father "whose perfect life starts to crumble after his daughter Paige (Ellie de Lange), well, runs away," according to Netflix. The story is based on Coben's 2019 book of the same name, so if you want to find out what happens, that's a good place to start!

For the first time in a long time, Richard Armitage will not be starring in the next Harlan Coben Netflix show.
Netflix just revealed the cast of Run Away, the next of the Harlan Coben Netflix shows. While there are a few who have starred in other Harlan Coben Netflix shows, including James Nesbitt, in the cast, it's notably missing a key player from many of those shows: Armitage.

Thriller author Harlan Coben signed a multi-million-dollar deal with streaming service Netflix in August 2018, which would grant the giant the rights to 14 of its novels over the course of five years. Since then, the deal has been extended as the adaptations, which were turned into limited series, have proven to be major successes.
Following the recent success of the latest addition, Missing You, Netflix has announced the cast for the latest adaptation. Run Away was announced in January 2024 alongside Missing You, and it will feature a cast filled with famous names. Per Tudum, Good Will Hunting's Minnie Driver will be joined by 15 other familiar names.

The latest Harlan Coben adaptation, Missing You, was launched early in January on Netflix. As usual with a Coben story-based series, this one is going down a storm. The show is currently number one on the global Netflix viewing list.
It’s another story with Coben’s trademark twists and turns, mystery, and suspense as the story unravels over five episodes. Detective Kat Donovan, played by Rosalind Eleazar, faces up to a series of mysterious and troubling events that become connected. That includes the shooting of her father some years before.
Missing You followed on from the success of Fool Me Once, another Coben story released on Netflix in 2023. Before those we had Safe (2018), The Stranger (2020), and Stay Close (2022). They’ve left us all keen for more from the Coben catalog on our Netflix screens.
