Lola Petticrew, an Irish actor whose career has only recently gotten started, has had a recent run of movie and television performances that is setting up the actor for an impressive and celebrated filmography that fans will want to keep an eye on. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Petticrew began their professional career with the 2017 short film, Sparrow. Mainstream work came the next year, in 2018, when Petticrew appeared in small roles in Come Home and Next of Kin. While they would go on to have a notable movie career, it's TV where Petticrew has made the biggest impact.
Petticrew has identified as queer and non-binary since they were 14, though they consider their work in Dating Amber, a coming-of-age dramedy about two closeted teens in 1990s Ireland, as the moment they learned to fully embrace their gender and sexuality (via TheQueerReview). A24 has released a trailer for its upcoming emotional drama, “Tuesday,” which stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) and Lola Petticrew.
The film premiered at the 50th Telluride Film Festival on Sept. 1 and is expected to release sometime this summer.
Louis-Dreyfus plays a loving, caring mother to a terminally ill teenage daughter (Petticrew). The two have a powerful bond, and early scenes of the “Tuesday” trailer show how they’ve embraced their circumstances with joy and humor, undaunted by the looming specter of death.
That changes when the daughter is literally confronted by death manifested in the form of a talking bird. As the story unfolds, the mother must learn to make her peace with and accept the brevity of her daughter’s time on Earth in an emotionally devastating drama about the echoes of loss and finding resilience in the unexpected.
Rounding out the cast is British actor and playwright Arinzé Kene.

A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).
You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”
Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.
The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).
HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

Produced by Fable Pictures and Sony Pictures Television, “Anne Boleyn” garnered headlines last year for Turner-Smith’s casting, which marks one of a handful of times a Black actor has portrayed a major royal figure on a British terrestrial broadcaster.

For those of us old enough to remember, in 1995 the majority of teenagers in the developed world were almost as ignorant and bigoted as their parents about gender and sexual identity — or at least decidedly not the enlightened folk most Gen-z kids seem to be these days. The endearing Irish comedy-drama Dating Amber harkens back to that time with a mix of wary nostalgia and downbeat affection by casting Fionn O’Shea and Lola Petticrew as two queer teenagers pretending to be a straight couple to get a little peace.

A new drama about Tudor queen Anne Boleyn, starring Jodie Turner-Smith, has found its Henry VIII.
British actor Mark Stanley has been cast as the iconic monarch. Best known for playing Grenn in the HBO series “Game of Thrones,” Stanley has also had starring roles in “Kajaki,” “Our Kind of Traitor” and “Dickensian.”
Boleyn was the Queen of England from 1533 to 1536 as the second wife of King Henry VIII. Their tempestuous marriage, and her execution for treason, made her one of the most colorful figures in English history. The Fable Pictures drama for U.K. broadcaster Channel 5 will explore the final months of Boleyn’s life from her perspective, and will follow her as she struggles to survive, to secure a future for her daughter, and to challenge the powerful patriarchy closing in around her.

"You know you can tell me anything and I will love you no matter what." Goldwyn Films has released a trailer for the British indie coming-of-age comedy film Dating Amber, the second feature from filmmaker David Freyne. The film is about a closeted gay teen and his lesbian counterpart who pretend to be a couple to avoid suspicion. Dating Amber is "a love letter to all those kids who grew up in a small town and who needed to escape in order to be themselves." Starring Fionn O’Shea & Lola Petticrew as Eddie & Amber, along with Sharon Horgan, Barry Ward, Simone Kirby, Evan O'Connor, Ian O'Reilly, and Emma Willis. This looks good! Yes it's a story we've heard before, but this looks like it has a refreshingly spunky look and feel, not only taking place during the 1990s but the with the wonderful connection these two have. Here's the official trailer...

Teen romantic comedies can be hard to invest in emotionally, particularly as one sinks further into decrepit, cynical adulthood. Whether or not the guy gets the girl in time for senior prom seems pretty inconsequential when you know they’ll probably be torn asunder by college. The good ones have something a little more lasting and internal at stake: Youthful crushes come and go, but you only truly come of age once. A gentle, bittersweet Irish charmer that’s more thoughtful than its generic title, “Dating Amber” finds such stakes as it follows two closeted teens who pretend to be in love, thus deflecting the speculation of classmates and concerned parents. What we root for isn’t just the kids’ tender (if strictly platonic) relationship, but their threatened senses of self: With light, loving strokes, writer-director David Freyne etches lives on the precipice of ruin.

So Dating Amber, released originally as "Beards", is a “poignant” (check), “honest” (absolutely!) and “funny” (very much so) “look at the highs and lows of teenage life where the only way to fit in is to not be yourself, even if this goes against your very being”.
That’s what it says on the label and, for the most part, the label is accurate. Well, for the first half anyway. According to personal preference, you may consider that a serious weakness or strength in what might otherwise come across as yet one more frothy tale of bigotry and coming out in Ireland in the 90s.
The set-up is recognisable from other recent comedy offerings that deal with growing up and being true to yourself, including Sing Street, Sex Education (Netflix) and Normal People.
Amber (Lola Petticrew) and Eddie (Fionn O’Shea) are two teens on the brink of leaving school to begin the journey.

To celebrate the release of the brilliant new romantic comedy-drama Dating Amber, which arrives on Amazon Prime Video this week, we spoke to one of its stars Fionn O’Shea about the film and his recent hot streak…
Set in the 1990’s Ireland, Dating Amber charts the friendship between Eddie (O’Shea) and Amber (Lola Petticrew) who decide to pretend to be a straight relationship in an effort to fit in and to keep their parents at bay. While it’s setting its thirty years prior, much of modern-day attitudes towards queer and Lgbtq+ lives can be seen through the characters in the film, and O’Shea talks to us about the importance of that, why the film isn’t a “happy ever after” story and the impact the story will have on audiences.

The Irish helmer’s second feature is a coming-of-age comedy starring Fionn O’Shea and Lola Petticrew in the lead roles. After a five-week shoot in Ireland, David Freyne’s new comedy, Beards, recently wrapped filming and has now entered post-production. The director’s first feature, entitled The Cured (2017), was a sci-fi horror flick set in a post-apocalyptic society, in which a virus that turns people into zombies has been cured. That film starred actors Ellen Page, Sam Keeley and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, among others. Freyne’s very well-received debut was screened in the Special Presentations section of the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. The story of Beards, penned in its entirety by the helmer himself, centres on two closeted teenagers in mid-1990s Ireland, called Eddie and Amber (both aged 17), who decide to stage a relationship in order to stop everyone speculating about their sexuality.
