Highly disappointed

RATED 4/10 Language: Tamil Source: Netflix

Some movies make you that you wasted your time, and I feel the same while watching and while writing this review also. In tamil one proverb is there "Kazhuthai thenju Katterumbu aanathu" this will perfectly suit for director DeeKay.

I enjoyed the his first horror "Yaamirukka Bayame" and this one goes in the same template. First one is resort, this one is village thats all. The acting, making, comedies are ditto same. This time not at all worked.

On top of this the beginning of the movie massacre is literally looted from the movie "Ghost Ship". The only good thing about the movie is the flashback scenes and the Kaatteri scenes.

Interested plotline muddled by incoherent story

I do enjoy horror comedies occasionally. But these days, the sub-genre is so overdone that it spawned several mediocre knockoffs. Vaibhav-starrer Kaatteri(2022), to my surprise, has an interesting premise but suffers from the inability of the director/writer to write anything coherently. It has gore, violence, dark comedy, adult comedy everything that you can expect in this sub-genre. The dialogues are badly written, that is, to put it mildly. Often, the characters repeat the same things twice seemingly forgetting they already had said that. I must applaud the visual effects, the makeup, and the set. The base plot of a mysterious ghost village with hidden secrets is not new to world cinema but it is rarely used in Tamil cinema. Only if they had put a little bit more effort into coming up with a better story to supplement the plot. It looked like they made the story on the go without thinking about whether it would make sense in the end. The actors did a fine job with what they had been given. Some of the scenes were enjoyable if you just simply ignore the lack of any coherent storyline.

The movie had potential and is simply wasted by the poor writing. Watchable for the jump scares, the period set, and the horror effects. Perhaps, the movie would have worked as a proper horror movie without the comedy element.

Rating: 4/10.

A Disappointing Descent into Uninspired Horror

"Katteri" attempts to deliver a horror experience with a blend of scares and social commentary, but unfortunately, it falls significantly short of its goals. The film's execution is weak, resulting in a lackluster and ultimately frustrating viewing experience.

The narrative struggles to maintain coherence and engagement, with a plot that feels convoluted and poorly developed. The attempts at creating suspense and fear are often ineffective, relying on predictable jump scares and uninspired visuals.

The performances are underwhelming, with the actors failing to bring life to their one-dimensional characters. The dialogue is often clichéd and unmemorable, further hindering the film's ability to connect with the audience.

The film's visual effects are subpar and detract from the overall atmosphere. The attempts at social commentary feel forced and out of place, disrupting the flow of the narrative and lacking any real depth or insight.

Overall, "Katteri" is a disappointing horror film that fails to deliver on its promise. Its weak plot, uninspired execution, and lack of genuine scares make it a film that is best avoided.

Fun movie to watch on OTT

Not sure why it's so low rated .. this is a slapstick entertainer ... Decent entertainer to watch on a Sunday evenin .. this is like the directors previous flick Yaamirukey bayamen... The screenplay is decent with no lag ... At the same time you cant expect any quality story also... Watch for fun and you wont be disappointed.

The one liners and funny gags are decent enuf to keep you entertained for the movie time of 2 hours. You won't feel bored. At the same time this is not like edge of the seat horror, it's like feel good comedy horror movie. Vaibhav movies are mostly entertaining and this also falls into the same genre.

Silly but entertaining, we were entertained thoroughly.

I think the movie clearly starts as leave your brains out and provides slapstick comedy with lot of dark adult humor. But soon as it progressed into second half it slowly build up a background story for this madness and it starts to make sense and had us thinking a bit and it was cleverly stitched together.

This was surely put together from lot of movies I have grown up watching, but director has done a great job, it fits nicely.

Honestly I watched it to kill time because new lord of rings was so awful, had to find something and trailer looked funny, once movie started it just got funnier and we enjoyed the humor and all the jump scares.

I can understand this is a low budget movie and I am not going to complain about it but for the money they have really done a great job. The LOTR with massive budget couldn't entertain me but this one did, I am glad I watched it.
