Robert Rodriguez’s Revived El Rey Network Clinches Roku Channel Deal
Image
The El Rey Network, which is getting set to make a rare transition from cable TV to free streaming, has set a deal for crucial real estate on the Roku Channel.

Starting tomorrow, the Robert Rodriguez-founded network, will start streaming as a 24-7 linear offering on the Roku Channel, one of more than 190 on the free outlet. Launched in 2013 as a result of the agreement reached by Comcast and NBCUniversal with regulators yielding new commitments to diverse programming options, El Rey targeted young, English-speaking Latino viewers. It wound down its nearly decade-long run on traditional pay-tv at the end of 2020, having peaked at 40 million households. While other channels have gone dark on cable and returned as digital properties, El Rey is one of the first to attempt such a shift during the streaming era.

The Roku Channel, which has 40,000 on-demand film and TV titles in addition to its linear offerings,...

Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey Network Segues From Cable TV To Streaming In Deal With Cinedigm
Image
Nearly a decade after fronting the launch of cable TV network El Rey, filmmaker Robert Rodriguez is taking its operations into the streaming realm.

In a deal with Cinedigm, which operates a portfolio of targeted streaming offerings like the Bob Ross Channel, Fandor and the Dove Channel, El Rey will continue to have a 24-7 live presence. Distribution partners have not been announced, but targets will include smart-tv and connected-tv platforms and streaming outlets like Pluto and others offering bundles of free channels.

At the beginning of its new phase, the streaming outlet will be less widely available than when it was at its cable peak, when it reached 40 million U.S. households. Even so, backers say its rebooted future is brighter given the overall shift toward streaming. Many of El Rey’s advertising relationships and resources will carry over to the new setup, and Rodriguez is an established figure...

Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey Network Cable Channel to Be Rebooted for Streaming With Cinedigm
Image
Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez has taken El Rey Network — once a linear cable TV channel — and revived the Latino-focused brand for the streaming era in partnership with Cinedigm.

Launched in 2013, El Rey Network at its peak reached over 40 million pay-tv households. The cable channel, stocked with a range of English-language scripted and unscripted programming catering to Latino audiences and beyond, shut down at the end of 2020.

In partnership with Cinedigm, El Rey Network will relaunch as a free-to-watch over-the-top streaming service available on platforms including connected TVs, digital set-top boxes, media-streaming devices and the web. In addition, Cinedigm will work with El Rey to ink deals with advertisers for custom content. Cinedigm also will exclusively distribute Rodriguez’s feature film “Red 11” and a companion docuseries, “Rebel Without A Crew: The Robert Rodriguez Film School,” to Ott platforms.

The date of the El Rey Network streaming channel launch has yet to be determined.

We Can Be Heroes is yet another Netflix film project for which the streaming giant has tapped a high-profile name, in this case that of action auteur Robert Rodriguez. Rodriguez is set to write, direct and produce We Can Be Heroes for Netflix, a genre film set in the aftermath of an alien invasion, leaving the children of superheroes tasked to rescue their kidnapped parents. However, the film’s cast brandishes some notable headliners in Priyanka Chopra, Christian Slater, Pedro Pascal and Sung Kang.

2019 Cannes: Zlotowski, Bonello, Takashi Miike, Robert Eggers, Lav Diaz & Guadagnino in Fortnight
We waited for the other shoe to drop and this year’s Directors’ Fortnight is chockfull of directorial films with six of the twenty-three (twenty-four films if you include Robert Rodriguez‘s Red 11 – a Masterclass on the SXSW title). Among those who don’t need an introduction we find the heavily anticipated sophomore film by Robert Eggers. The Lighthouse might have been too avant-garde for the Un Certain Regard and Main Comp and reunites the section with Willem Dafoe who was there with The Florida Project. Lav Diaz makes his first trip to the Croisette with The Halt while master filmmakers we find Takashi Miike with First Love and Bertrand Bonello‘s shot in Haiti Zombi Child (which was still in production in January – so this print will still be wet) are among the headliner names. …...

Robert Rodriguez Explains From Dusk Till Dawn Ending, El Mariachi Origins
David Crow Mar 26, 2019

Robert Rodriguez talks new thriller Red 11's origins from making of El Mariachi... and where Seth is really going in From Dusk Till Dawn.

When Robert Rodriguez comes by our studio during SXSW, he’s maybe a little nostalgic. Whereas most other filmmakers descend onto Austin in early March for a whirlwind of press and festivities, Rodriguez lives here and will remain long after the banners come down. Thus his trip was one practically across the street when he begins to reflect on the making Red 11, a new thriller intrinsically linked to his first film El Mariachi, plus those early days that’ve become something akin to filmmaking legend. In this vein, he and his children just watched From Dusk Till Dawn for the first-time together—and not the TV series either. This is the 1996 cult classic that starred George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino (who also...

‘Red 11’: Robert Rodriguez’s Latest Is Part Genre Thriller, Part Instructive Filmmaking Teaching Tool [SXSW]
Known for his guerilla approach to filmmaking, getting shit done efficiently and under budget, Robert Rodriguez is a multi-faceted creator with a passion for championing aspiring artists into the industry. Robert Rodriguez in Sin City : J'ai tué pour elle (2014)
Shockingly high concept for its astonishingly low budget, Robert Rodriguez’s “Red 11” was never meant to see the light of day, but turned out so well that the director opted to share it with the public as a kind of empowerment tool. Make no mistake: The thriller — which takes place in a medical research lab where young people sell their bodies to science, at a price — is a clunky, badly acted, and frequently embarrassing by-the-numbers picture at best, held together with shoestring and paper clips, but that’s almost beside the point.

Debuting at SXSW just weeks after Rodriguez’s most expensive production yet, “Alita: Battle Angel” (and shot over 14 days during post-production of that project), “Red 11” was inspired by the unorthodox way Rodriguez made his Sundance audience award-winning debut, “El Mariachi,” and designed to prove that resources are irrelevant when it comes to teaching oneself how to make movies,...

Robert Rodriguez on Advice From James Cameron and How ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ Brought Him Back to His Roots
Robert Rodriguez in Sin City : J'ai tué pour elle (2014)
Just a few weeks after making the biggest movie of his career, Robert Rodriguez is returning to his roots. While the Austin-based genre filmmaker’s James Cameron-produced “Alita: Battle Angel” has grossed over $350 million worldwide, Rodriguez already has a new movie on the market. He directed “Red 11” with his son Racer as his only crew member and a budget of $7,000, matching the paltry amount Rodriguez famously spent on his 1992 debut “El Mariachi.” That legendary experience spawned the filmmaker’s influential memoir-as-manual “Rebel Without a Crew,” as well as a docuseries with the same name in which filmmakers attempt to do the same thing.

“Red 11” was a dose of nostalgia for Rodriguez, who resurrected a screenplay he wrote in the wake of “El Mariachi.” Drawing on his own experience participating in medical trials in 1991 — the payment helped him finance his debut — “Red 11” revolves around exactly that: a...

"Red 11"
"Battle Angel: Alita" director Robert Rodriguez' new film, is the ultra low-budget feature "Red 11", named after the shirt color and patient number Rodriguez was assigned when he sold his body to a research hospital to pay for his first feature "El Mariachi", opening March 15, 2019:

"...Katy Harris, Alejandro Rose-Garcia and Katherine Willis star in this horror thriller set in the 'Legal Drug Research' world. At these 'Facilities', young guys become 'Lab Rats' to make quick money...

"...but our hero 'Red 11' is here to buy his way out of a huge debt, but while under the influence of experimental drugs, Red 11 doesn’t know if what's in front of him is fact or fiction..."

Exclusive SXSW Debut: First Poster for Robert Rodriguez’s $7,000 Film ‘Red 11’
We at Collider have an exclusive poster debut to share with you today. It’s the one-sheet for Sin City and Alita: Battle Angel filmmaker Robert Rodriguez’s new film Red 11, which was made for just $7,000. He first burst onto the scene with his low-budget indie El Mariachi, and has since taken a “Diy” approach to his diverse range of films regardless of scale, from Desperado to the …...

SXSW 2019 Film: 10 Promising Selections, From Robert Rodriguez to Beto O’Rourke
Janet Pierson
The first half of January is always busy in the film community, as Oscar voting comes to a close and the Sundance Film Festival starts its engine. This year, the SXSW Film Festival threw its cowboy hat into the ring, pushing up the initial announcement of its film lineup instead of waiting until after Sundance. The result is an even more complex window into major festival premieres and potential discoveries that will distinguish the first quarter of 2019.

The move is partly the result of Sundance ending later than usual; while the festival normally goes until the end of January, this year, it ends February 3. The constrained timeline also impacted SXSW’s earlier submission deadline, and meant that its programming team had to scramble to lock in this year’s selection. “We were tighter about no exceptions to the deadline,” said SXSW Director of Film Janet Pierson in an interview. “We had to be decisive sooner.

Red-Band Trailer For The Horror-Themed Amusement Park Serial Killer Thriller Hell Fest
A serial killer is on the loose and brutally murdering people in a horror-themed traveling amusement park in this new red-band trailer for Hell Fest. Then reality kicks in and they are fighting to survive!

I like the concept of this movie because it's something that I think a lot of us may have thought about while going to these fun and creepy Halloween attractions every year. What if a demented killer went on a killing spree in one of these settings?

The movie stars Amy Forsyth, Reign Edwards, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Christian James, Roby Attal, Matt Mercurio and Tony Todd, and here's the synopsis:

Robert Rodriguez Will Return to His Low-Budget Roots for New Feature With $7K Price Tag
Robert Rodriguez in Sin City : J'ai tué pour elle (2014)
Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez infamously made his first feature, the lauded 1992 indie “El Mariachi,” for the paltry sum of just $7,000. Even twenty-five years ago, that was hardly the kind of budget filmmakers dreamed about, but Rodriguez managed to turn limited money into a signature feature that helped launch his career. And now he wants to do the same for other rising stars — with a big twist.

On the upcoming unscripted series “Rebel Without a Crew,” producer Rodriguez will challenge five filmmakers — including Scarlet Moreno, Alejandro Montoya Marin, Bola Ogun, Bonnie-Kathleen Ryan, and Josh Stifter — to make their own films for just $7,000, with zero crew to be found. It’s a wild enough idea, but one that comes with a real kicker: per a new press release, Rodriguez himself will participate in the challenge and also make a new film for just $7,000.
