Japan has produced hundreds -- if not thousands -- of animated works that cause the average viewer to reach for their tissues. Recently, a prominent ranking site had Japanese audiences choose their all-time favorite tearjerker anime -- a lineup that includes several international hits.
Ranking.net, a site dedicated to media-related surveys, recently unveiled the results of its "Heartwarming Anime That Will Make You Cry" poll. Out of 4,200 total participants, the overwhelming majority voted for Kyoto Animation's Violet Evergarden -- a moving military drama about a young woman with harrowing memories of the battlefield. The series earned 1,653 votes -- over double that of second place winner, Your Lie in April, which earned 713 votes. The third and fourth most highly-voted works -- Clannad: After Story and Angel Beats -- both originate from the mind of Jun Maeda, the well-known co-founder of Key Visual Arts. Fans of Japanese anime enjoy watching heartbreaking series just as much as the producers want to make their audiences experience cathartic sadness. Though many upbeat, happy anime series instantly uplift the audience, there are just as many sad anime sure to have viewers walking away with tears streaming down their faces. With plenty of sad anime on Crunchyroll, fans who prefer a good cry will have a lot to choose from.
From dramas about teenage romance to series that cover serious topics like illness and war, there's no shortage of heart-wrenching anime with varying levels of severity. Animate Times -- a news outlet run by Japan's largest anime and manga retailer, Animate -- has unveiled its top five picks for the most tear-jerking anime of all time. Modern classics largely lead the charge, with the list populated by favorites from the 2010s.
The list includes the well-known shows Your Lie in April (the beloved adaptation of Naoshi Arakawa's manga) and the 2018 hit series A Place Further than the Universe. Also featured in the lineup are Violet Evergarden, Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day and Angel Beats!, with each relatively recent anime best known for serving pensive explorations of grief and friendship. While some fans may have expected older, iconic tear-jerkers like Grave of the Fireflies, all of the list's featured titles are from recent memory -- Angel Beats! being the oldest, which premiered in 2010. While recency bias may have some fans rolling their eyes, the...

There's a particular challenge that original anime face in that, unlike manga adaptations, they don't have a built-in audience and fanbase. Therefore, sometimes it can take a while for them to gain some momentum in the anime community. When “A Place Further than the Universe” first aired in 2018 there were many who dismissed it as another “cute girls doing cute things” show that had little to offer beyond mildly humorous antics. Those who gave the show a proper chance, however, found a deeply affecting coming of age comedy-drama from a creative team at the top of their game with plenty of emotional catharsis and heart-warming growth.

Iruma-kun is a cheerful and funny anime that follows a human boy's adventures in a demon school. The Way of the Househusband is a hilarious anime that flips gender roles as a former Yakuza member becomes a stay-at-home husband. A Place Further Than the Universe is an uplifting anime about four girls who form a strong bond while journeying to Antarctica.
The most upbeat anime guaranteed to cheer fans up are not only cheerful enough to clear away any lingering sadness, but will also be inspiring, motivational, funny, and sometimes just outright absurd. As a result, series of all sorts of genres can bring about cheer, from mainstream comedy, to sports, to isekai.
As a medium, anime is fascinating because of its wide reach and the variety of relatability it offers. Whether one is feeling down, or if just a distraction is needed, there is an anime out there that will fulfill the role,...

A Place Further Than The Universe is an underrated anime currently available on Crunchyroll that every fan of motivational stories should check out. Motivational stories aren't uncommon in the anime industry, with some of the most well-known series revolving around underdogs and outcasts going from zero to hero, pursuing their dreams relentlessly in spite of any obstacles they may encounter. Yet, as numerous as they are, there is no story quite as inspiring as that of A Place Further Than The Universe.
A Place Father Than the Universe follows a group of four high-school girls who, despite having different reasons for doing so, decide to embark on a journey to Antarctica together. Naturally, such a journey is full of difficulties and hurdles to overcome that start long before their ship departs. In fact, their dream seems so impossible to achieve that even their peers are shown to mock them for it.

(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)
The purpose of this column has always been to highlight anime that newcomers could jump into without prior knowledge of the medium, shows that hopefully act as a gateway to a medium full of incredible possibilities. Recently, I've been trying to avoid brand-new shows, and instead focus on shining a light on older classics and relatively more modern but still underseen anime — basically, shows that you don't hear about trending on social media.
That being said, a brand new show comes along sometimes and surpasses anticipations and expectations to deliver a viewing experience so unique and thrilling I am left with no choice but to immediately write about it in the hopes that everyone catches up before the season ends. That is the case with this month's anime: "Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead.

Everyone loves a good romance, but nothing beats platonic love and support. Positive female friendships are the oft-unsung hero of a good story. Shonen anime particularly has many examples of amazing friendships between guys, but shonen and shojo have supportive relationships between girls and women that last through maturity and life changes.
Bonus points are definitely awarded if the female friendship passes the Bechdel test: at least two women talk to each other and discuss something other than a man. Best friends are one of the closest consistent relationships a person can have in their life, and they make for great deuteragonists or well-crafted side characters in anime.

"Haven't you ever taken a path that wasn't laid out for you?" GKids has revealed an official US theatrical trailer for Goodbye, Don Glees!, a Japanese anime from Atsuko Ishizuka arriving in US theaters next month. The film opened in Japan in February and has been playing at international festivals this summer. Teen misfits Roma, Toto, and Drop call themselves the "Don Glees," an informal name for their backyard adventures. One day, when the trio gets blamed for a nearby forest fire, they set off into the woods to prove their innocence. As disaster strikes their expedition, tensions flare between the friends as they realize that growing up has taken them on wildly different paths in life. Ishizuka follows up her series A Place Further Than the Universe with her first original feature film. With luminescent animation and lush backdrops, Goodbye, Don Glees! is a tender coming-of-age about the fearlessness...

Following her excellent work in the “Blue Literature” and “A Place Further than the Universe” series, it was about time for Atsuko Ishizuka to direct and pen a movie of her own, with “Goodbye Don Glees” being her first effort with both capacities. Animated by one of the top anime studios at the moment, Madhouse, and featuring an approach that moves somewhere between Miyazaki and “Stand By Me”, “Goodbye Don Glees” is definitely an interesting anime
