British presenter, broadcaster, filmmaker, author and historian, professor David Olusoga, will be presented with a BAFTA Special Award at the upcoming BAFTA Television Awards on May 14. The award is one of BAFTA’s highest honors recognizing an outstanding contribution to film, games or television.

Olusoga’s credits include presenting history series “A House Through Time” (BBC Two), writing and presenting series “Black & British: A Forgotten History” (BBC Two) and the BAFTA-winning “Britain’s Forgotten Slave Owners.” In recent years he led major interviews with the former President of the United States, Barack Obama and lectures including the Edinburgh TV Festival MacTaggart Lecture in 2020.

Olusoga said: “It is humbling to have my work in television, as both a producer and a presenter, recognized in this way.”

Exclusive: Blockbuster hits Black Panther and The Woman King have cleared the path for Netflix to succeed with Jada Pinkett Smith-narrated docu-drama African Queens, according to the show’s exec.

Premiering this week, African Queens will first tell the story of Queen Njinga of Angola and subsequently Cleopatra in its second season. It is produced by Welcome to Earth with Will Smith indie Nutopia and Pinkett Smith and Will Smith’s Westbrook Studios.

Speaking exclusively to Deadline ahead of a London screening tonight, EP Maxine Watson, who has worked on some of Britain’s biggest factual hits, said recent blockbusters have created a landscape in which shows like African Queens can flourish. A separate Njinga drama from Starz, which is being exec produced by 50 Cent, is also in the works.

British presenter David Olusoga will deliver this year’s MacTaggart Lecture as part of the virtual Edinburgh TV Festival in August.

Olusoga, a popular academic, appears frequently in some of the U.K.’s top factual shows, such as the BBC’s “A House Through Time,” “Black and British: A Forgotten History” and the BAFTA Award-winning “Britain’s Forgotten Slave Owners.”

The 20-year TV veteran, who is British-Nigerian, is also one of the U.K.’s foremost historians and ranked among the most influential Black Britons of 2019 and 2020. Olusoga is a professor of public history at Manchester University and the author of “The World’s War,” co-author of “The Kaiser’s Holocaust: Germany’s Forgotten Genocide and The Colonial Roots of Nazism,” and a contributor to The Oxford Companion to Black British History.

Olusoga joins the ranks of prominent industry voices who have given the agenda-setting keynote speech at the Edinburgh TV Festival.

Meghan Markle is seeking a court order preventing the Mail on Sunday publisher Associated Newspapers from naming five of her friends as part of an ongoing legal dispute, according to reports. Markle is suing Associated Newspapers after the Mail on Sunday published a private letter to her father Thomas Markle. In a court filing, Markle said Associated Newspapers is attempting to name friends who gave interviews supporting her case. “These five women are not on trial, and nor am I,” Markle said, according to a copy of the filing seen by the Daily Telegraph. “Both the Mail on Sunday and the court system have their names on a confidential schedule, but for the Mail on Sunday to expose them in the public domain for no reason other than clickbait and commercial gain is vicious and poses a threat to their emotional and mental wellbeing.
