Matt Hutchins, the husband of the late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, has given a statement regarding the fatal tragedy that occurred on the set of “Rust” in which a prop firearm discharged and killed Halyna.

Matt released a statement through his Twitter alongside a picture of Halyna.

“Halyna inspired us all with her passion and vision, and her legacy is too meaningful to encapsulate in words,” Matt wrote. “Our loss is enormous, and we ask that the media please respect my family’s privacy as we process our grief. We thank everyone for sharing images and stories of her life.”

AFI Honors Halyna Hutchins’ Legacy With Scholarship Fund for Women Cinematographers

The American Film Institute has set up a scholarship for women cinematographers after the death of “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. AFI is now accepting donations for the fund, which “aims to help female cinematographers build sustainable careers in the movie business,” according to director and writer Olia Oparina.

Oparina, who calls Hutchins “her closest friend” and worked with Hutchins on the 2017 film “Snowbound” told Variety in a statement, “From the moment I sat down next to Halyna in UCLA extension’s film directing class, I knew we would be best friends.”

“We moved to Hollywood 11 years ago — two first generation immigrants from Ukraine and Russia who didn’t know a single soul in the movie business. Instead of asking others for a seat at their table, we decided to build our own. As we worked on finishing our master’s degrees, we began to find ‘our tribe’: a group of writers,...

Halyna Hutchins, Cinematographer Who Died on Set of ‘Rust,’ Remembered as ‘Truly Unique Artist’
Image
Michael Nell knew he needed somebody great to help him capture the darker side of Los Angeles — a world of low-rent motels, bar rooms and back alleys — for “Blindfire.” The movie, which was set to mark Nell’s feature debut, was a tense police thriller that examined issues of social justice and race, and it would take a master of the camera to help him pull it off. That’s how the neophyte director first connected with Halyna Hutchins, a rising cinematographer who was making a name for herself shooting short films and low-budget indies like “Darlin'” and “Snowbound.”

On Thursday, while Hutchins was in New Mexico shooting “Rust,” a Western starring Alec Baldwin, she was shot by a prop gun that contained a live round of ammunition and died at the age of 42. Authorities have confirmed that Baldwin discharged the shot that killed Hutchins and wounded director Joel Souza,...
