Netflix means a lot of different things to different people these days. A lot of it is warranted, and “Netflix Movie” is practically defined within the zeitgeist. Think of it like Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart’s famous remarks on obscenity and porn—maybe I can’t define what I mean by Netflix movie beyond the obvious, but I know it when I see it. It’s complicated, too, since Netflix both produces movies in-house and acquires them elsewhere. Fair Play was one of 2023’s best thrillers, though that was a Sundance acquisition, not a Netflix original. Fear Street: Prom Queen? Yeah, that’s a Netflix movie.

Richard Shepard’s The Perfection? Also not a Netflix movie. This one’s a Miramax production acquired by Netflix after the 2018 Fantastic Fest. Still, in the most favorable terms imaginable, Shepard’s film may not be a Netflix movie, though it certainly feels like one.

Netflix recently added one of the best horror films of the decade in Barbarian. If you survived that onslaught to the senses, we've got three more horrifying tales for you.

A quick note: like Barbarian, all three of these films are led by strong women, both the characters and actresses. So if you're the incel-type with mommy issues, you might want to stay safe with your Jason and Freddy fantasies. The adults will be watching these.

As in director Zach Cregger's startling debut film, all three of these films feature women who are thrown into the role of the victim, but (no spoilers) attempt to fight their way through the grisly events they face. A side note: for certain bloggers. I see this all too often. "Grizzly" refers to a type of bear. "Grisly" is derived from the Old English "grislic", meaning horrible. And horrible fates await in all three of these films.

The first trailer has been revealed showing Billy Zane as Marlon Brando at the peak of his powers in upcoming biopic “Waltzing With Brando.”

The feature, which also stars Jon Heder, has been picked up by Vmi Worldwide for foreign sales.

Written and directed by Bill Fishman, the film is based on a memoir by Bernard Judge which takes place between 1969 and 1974 while Brando was preparing to film “The Godfather” and “Last Tango in Paris.” Alongside Zane and Heder, additional castmembers include the Oscar winner Richard Dreyfuss, as well as Camille Razat (“Emily in Paris”), Alaina Huffman, Tia Carrera (“Waynes World”) and Mick Jagger’s son James Jagger.

It took Richard Shepard years to get out of “movie jail” after he made “The Linguini Incident,” the nearly-forgotten 1991 crime comedy starring David Bowie and Rosanna Arquette. But now the film is getting a second chance, with a series of screenings and an upcoming Blu-ray release.

And just like that, we’re into February. After starting the new year with a redo of our episode on The Perfection, followed by AIDS metaphor Safe, del Toro’s Gothic Romance Crimson Peak and slasher remake House of Wax, Trace and I are settling into our birthday month with four weeks of ‘Weird Sex’ films.

First on the docket: David Cronenberg‘s iconic body horror film Videodrome, which just celebrated its fortieth anniversary last week. In the film, Max Renn (James Woods) works at a Toronto TV station that programs sexy, violent content and he’s always on the hunt for new fare. Enter Videodrome: a pirated signal originally thought to originate from Malaysia (but is actually from Pittsburgh) that is basically snuff.

The trouble is that Videodrome is also a weapon, causing physical changes in the body of viewers (tumors), as well as vivid hallucinations.

It’s been another wild month on the podcast, ping-ponging between genres and time periods. Horror’s queerness has always been tied to the other. Whether we’re talking about literal monsters, as in the case of Bride of Frankenstein, or the queer-coded nature of Hays Code-era films like Cat People一or even decades-later queer vehicles Dr. Jekyll & Sister Hyde and Sleepaway Camp一there’s always been a queer pulse throbbing inside horror storytelling.

The career trajectory of Allison Williams is one that calls for closer analysis. The actress became known for portraying Marnie Michaels, a generally insufferable New York millennial, on HBO’s Girls. Following the success of that show, she went down a completely opposite path and has now starred in three horror films. She first dipped her toe in the horror pool by playing Rose in the game-changing movie Get Out, followed by her starring role in the sapphic thriller The Perfection, and now unleashes new hell in M3GAN. The fascinating part of it all is that she is picking roles that don’t fit into the traditional woman-in-horror tropes. This past weekend, a new horror icon arrived in the form of a sassy killer doll named M3GAN, who is brought to life in the film by Gemma, a determined purveyor of innovation who wants to push the boundaries of AI in our everyday lives by creating a best friend for kids that caters to their every need. Played by Allison Williams, Gemma is a character we don’t see a lot of these days in Hollywood, which was just one of the many aspects of M3GAN that this writer thoroughly enjoyed.

M3GAN establishes its leading lady as someone to watch in the horror genre. The film, which has comedic moments despite it being a horror, brings together a strong cast to tell its story. Now, Williams is returning for her third venture into the genre with the newest Blumhouse flick boasting a horror dream team of creatives, "M3GAN." Williams stars as Gemma, a brilliant roboticist who invents a lifelike robotic companion meant to act as a child's best friend and a parent's "greatest ally." There's only one massive problem: M3GAN is protective, defensive, and learning.

Is a PG-13 rating the kiss of death for horror in modern Hollywood? Sure, it can be, but it doesn't have to be. The company behind Summer of Soul, Disney+’s Hamilton and Netflix’s Conversations with a Killer is bolstering its senior creative team with Reiss as an exec producer.

She comes to the company, having co-exec produced The Andy Warhol Diaries, as well as producing Netflix feature film The Perfection starring Allison Williams and Logan Browning, BAFTA-nominated documentary The Eagle Huntress and HBO Max doc Santa Camp.

She previously worked with RadicalMedia, which was co-founded by Jon Kamen and Frank Scherma, on Spaceship Earth, which premiered at Sundance and was acquired by Neon in 2020.

Back in October, we heard that Richard Shepard, writer/director of the Netflix-released horror film The Perfection (read our review Here) was teaming up with his co-writers on that film to develop a supernatural mystery called St. Donatus for the Peacock streaming service. Now Deadline has broken the news that Shepard has another interesting project in the works: he is set to write, direct, and executive produce a limited series based on Alex Marwood’s psychological thriller novel The Wicked Girls (pick up a copy at This Link).

The Wicked Girls limited series is coming to us from All Creatures Great and Small producer Playground. The project is not set up at a network yet. Colin Callender, Scott Huff, and David Stern are overseeing the development of the show for Playground and serve as executive producers with Shepard.

Sundance Institute and Hartbeat have selected Mayanna Berrin, Kiana Butler Jabangwe and Danielle Solomon as the recipients of the “Women Write Now” fellowship for Black female comedic screenwriters.

Logan Browning, Tika Sumpter and Nicole Byer have signed on to direct three short films written by the fellows, which will debut at a special exhibition during the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

Additionally, the fellows have been awarded a one-year first-look deal with Hartbeat, the multi-platform media company founded by Kevin Hart. Script mentors will include Leigh Davenport (“Run the World”), Kay Oyegun (“This Is Us”), and Yamara Taylor (“Black-ish”). The company’s Head of Film, Candace Cherry Wilson and its VP of TV Development Tiffany Brown will serve as creative advisors at the program’s career development lab.

Allison Williams has boarded the upcoming Showtime limited series “Fellow Travelers” alongside Matt Bomer, Variety has learned exclusively.

The series was picked up at Showtime back in April with an eight-episode order. It is based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Mallon.

The show is described as an epic love story and political thriller, chronicling the volatile romance of two very different men who meet in the shadow of McCarthy-era Washington. Bomer will play the handsome, charismatic Hawkins Fuller, who maintains a financially rewarding, behind-the scenes career in politics. Hawkins avoids emotional entanglements – until he meets Tim Laughlin, a young man brimming with idealism and religious faith. They begin a romance just as Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare war on “subversives and sexual deviants,” initiating one of the darkest periods in 20th-century American history.

It’s been a decade since Lena Dunham was the voice of her generation. Or, well, a voice of a generation.

HBO series “Girls” revolutionized the TV landscape when it premiered on April 15, 2012. The series, created by Dunham, who also starred in, executive-produced, wrote, and directed the show, first debuted at SXSW before its TV premiere and eventual five Emmy Award nominations that year. Jenni Konner served as co-showrunner and producer while Judd Apatow also executive produced.

“Girls” stars Dunham as 20-something struggling writer Hannah Horvath, who has one foot in adolescence thanks to an allowance from her parents. After she’s informed she’s been financially cut off two years after graduating from a liberal arts college, Hannah embarks on navigating New York City by experiencing one mistake at a time.

Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, and Allison Williams play Hannah’s eccentric and at times codependent circle of friends.

Shepard has directed ten television pilots to pick-up including Criminal Minds and has also directed episodes of Acapulco for Apple and Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale. He also directed 12 episodes of HBO’s Girls including the controversial American Bitch episode for which Matthew Rhys received an Emmy nomination.

On the feature side, he has helmed The Matador starring Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear, black comedy Dom Hemingway starring Jude Law and Richard E. Grant, Allison Williams’ The Perfection and HBO documentary I Knew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale.
