January 2025 could mark a bleak month for very specific reasons, but in that month one can watch a nicely curated collection of David Bowie’s best performances. Nearly a decade since he passed, the iconic actor (who had some other trades) is celebrated with The Man Who Fell to Earth, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Linguini Incident, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, and Basquiat. (Note: watch The Missing Pieces under Fire Walk with Me‘s Criterion edition for about three times as much Phillip Jeffries.) It’s a retrospective-heavy month: Nicole Kidman, Cameron Crowe, Ethan Hawke, Paulin Soumanou Vieyra, Paolo Sorrentino, and Sean Baker are given spotlights; the first and last bring with them To Die For and Take Out‘s Criterion Editions, joining Still Walking, Hunger, and A Face in the Crowd.

Among the myriad reasons we could call the Criterion Channel the single greatest streaming service is its leveling of cinematic snobbery. Where a new World Cinema Project restoration plays, so too does Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight. I think about this looking at November’s lineup and being happiest about two new additions: a nine-film Robert Bresson retro including L’argent and The Devil, Probably; and a one-film Hype Williams retro including Belly and only Belly, but bringing as a bonus the direct-to-video Belly 2: Millionaire Boyz Club. Until recently such curation seemed impossible.
November will also feature a 20-film noir series boasting the obvious and the not. Maybe the single tightest collection is “Women of the West,” with Johnny Guitar and The Beguiled and Rancho Notorious and The Furies only half of it. Lynch/Oz, Irradiated, and My Two Voices make streaming premieres; Drylongso gets a Criterion Edition; and joining...

While we continue to wait to hear if The Purge franchise creator James DeMonaco is going to have the opportunity to make The Purge 6 (last we heard, he was sounding confident that the sequel is going to happen), DeMonaco has been hard at work on another horror project, The Home. First discussed in 2021, that film stars Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live) – and the Motion Picture Association ratings board has just revealed that The Home has earned an R rating for strong bloody violence and gore, language and some sexual content.
The film doesn’t have a release date yet, but now that it has a rating its release shouldn’t be too far off.
Scripted by DeMonaco and Adam Canto, The Home sees Davidson taking on the role of Max, a troubled man who starts working at a retirement home and realizes its residents and caretakers harbor sinister secrets. As...

Madelyn Cline has had smaller roles in various TV shows and movies before her breakout role in Outer Banks, but even those supporting roles have exposed her to a wide audience. Cline's role in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery allowed her to branch out from high school teen roles and showcase her comedic talent. Outer Banks is Cline's most significant role to date, where she handles romance, action, mystery, and comedy with equal measure, solidifying her as a standout performer in the series.
Outer Banks' Madelyn Cline has become a breakout star thanks to her lead role in the Netflix hit drama adding to her already impressive list of movies and TV shows. However, Outer Banks is far from Madelyn Cline’s first gig. Her first role was the 2009 short Milites Christi, and she made her feature film debut two years later in 23rd Psalm: Redemption. The Purge franchise creator James DeMonaco is hoping to make The Purge 6 – and he’s sounding confident that the sequel is going to happen. But before that project goes into production, DeMonaco is wrapping up work on a different horror project, The Home. First discussed in 2021, that film stars Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live) – and during an interview with Variety, DeMonaco said that the actor, best known for his comedic performances, is not funny in their horror thriller collaboration.
DeMonaco said, “He’s not funny in it, to be quite honest. This is a very, very dramatic, straightforward role. He’s the straight man while chaos is happening all around him and he’s reacting to it. But he just came in knowing what he had to do and he stepped up completely.“

Disney's remake of The Little Mermaid has washed ashore with its premiere in movie theaters, putting a spin on the original animated version by reimagining its story in live-action. Along with Halle Bailey as Ariel, the film stars Jonah Hauer-King in the role of Eric. Those familiar with the story will know that Eric is a human prince whom Ariel falls in love with after she saves him from drowning. While Hauer-King has made his mark in film with roles in movies like Old Boys and This Is the Night, Prince Eric may be his biggest role yet.
Portraying the live-action Eric certainly came with some pressure, as the actor had to find out how to transition the character from the world of animation to reality. Speaking about his casting with The Hollywood Reporter, Hauer-King addressed how he wanted to bring "three dimensionality" to the role while touching on the...

The Purge franchise started out as a uniquely conceptual suspense-filled horror thriller that was a scaled down, home invasion flick. Then, the sequels started exploring more and more of the concepts that surrounded a dark holiday in which people can act out their darkest desires without legal repercussions. The star of the sequels, and action movie journeyman, Frank Grillo, was kind enough to speak to JoBlo for his latest film, Little Dixie, where he spoke about the possibility of closing out the series.

A veteran screenwriter and, more recently, an accomplished director, James DeMonaco has had a prolific career most commonly associated with The Purge franchise. Spanning five films and a television series, The Purge marked DeMonaco’s sophomore directorial outing and, aided by the upstart production company, Blumhouse, saw the filmmaker’s first box-office hit. DeMonaco, who also directed the second and third entries in the series, continues with the franchise, as a screenwriter, to this day (a rumored sixth installment is currently in the works). However, ties to his hometown of Staten Island remain at the forefront of DeMonaco’s creative endeavours, and his […]

Rocky Balboa is a God in writer/director James DeMonaco's new film "This is the Night." The coming-of-age story focuses on a landmark event in (movie) history: the opening day of "Rocky III." The kids, the parents, and everyone on Staten Island was ready for it. People leave the film inspired and ready to take on the world, which kicks off a night of ups and downs in DeMonaco's film.
For DeMonaco, though, "Rocky III" is also a stand-in for any great film that leaves someone walking out of a theater on a high. DeMonaco, who's known best for creating the "Purge" series...

James DeMonaco (“The Purge“) has mostly lived in the horror genre throughout his career. He gained notoriety throughout his involvement in the topical ‘Purge’ films, directing the first three films and producing “The First Purge” and “The Forever Purge.” That franchises’ profitability under the Blumhouse banner has given the director the freedom to work on something new. And DeMonaco is taking a wildly different turn with his next production.

Exclusive: The Purge franchise architect James DeMonaco has crafted a personal film, which is an ode to cinema, based in his hometown of Staten Island, entitled This Is the Night and the Blumhouse release has a one-week theatrical run starting this Friday, Sept. 17 at Angelika’s Village East in New York City before hitting PVOD on Sept. 21 via Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
“I conceived this film as a love-letter to cinema. This is the Night is a passion project I’ve been waiting to make. A story based in my hometown of Staten Island, the film serves as a PSA: Movies bring us–people, families–together. There’s no time like the present to celebrate movies and how they inspire us,” DeMonaco tells Deadline.

Executive producing with Murphy and Brennan are Eric Newman (Narcos), Bryan Unkeless as well as Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (Catfish). Filming is set to begin in the fall.

If you're not a fan of comedic action movies, then don't bother reading any further. Boss Level isn't for you.
Similarly, if you're sick of Groundhog Day-type stories in which the same day is replayed over and over, look away, my friend.
But if you enjoy any or all of the above, then Boss Level will be more fun than you've had all year.
Frank Grillo stars in this film directed by Joe Carnahan under the production company WarParty Films, which they founded. They've worked together in the past on films such as The Grey in 2011, and they have a beautifully symbiotic relationship.
According to Variety, WarParty Films pitches efficient and reasonably prices big-set action pics that have gone missing in the wake of the superhero genre of which Grillo was a part with his role as Brock Rumlow in the Avengers series.
If that's their goal, then Boss Level delivers.

The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history. It was often said that women wanted to be with Cary Grant and men wanted to be Cary Grant, but perhaps no one was more consumed by the perception of Cary Grant—the handsome, unremittingly suave and stylish movie star—than Grant himself. “Even I want to be Cary Grant,” the actor once mused. Indeed, Grant’s public and on-screen persona was a carefully crafted, meticulously honed, and ultimately triumphant development, as much to suit the needs of his ascending celebrity as it was to shroud an unhappy childhood, a series of romantic passions and disappointments, and a latent dark side fostered by uncertainty and doubt. It was, however, and in any and all cases, resoundingly successful. Grant was the epitome of the movie star, a Hollywood icon and one of its most entertaining,...

Frank Grillo and Jake Allyn will play father-and-son Texas ranchers in “No Man’s Land,” a modern Western drama from director Conor Allyn.
Allyn and David Barraza Ibañez penned the script, which is inspired by the real-life “no man’s land” between the U.S.- Mexico border on the Rio Grande and the U.S. “hard border” fences to the north.
At the center of the story is a father-son vigilante patrol, which is thrust into chaos after Jackson Greer (Allyn) accidentally kills an immigrant boy. When his father (Grillo) tries to take the blame, Jackson flees south on horseback, becoming a gringo “illegal alien” in Mexico. Chased by Texas Rangers and Mexican federales, Jackson embarks on a pilgrimage to seek forgiveness from the dead boy’s vengeful father (Jorge Jimenez) only to fall in love with the land he was taught to hate.

Created by Goldman and Martin and written by Goldman based on a story by her and Martin, the untitled prequel takes place thousands of years before the events of Game Of Thrones. It chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. It’s time to celebrate the moms in this week’s “Saturday Night Live”; always a charming tradition, albeit one that burns screen time that could have been used for, y’know, full-on comedy. Still, it’s more fun to watch the cast’s mothers demonstrate relative comfort with reading cue cards than get another awkward Alec Baldwin-as-Trump political cold open. But how did the rest of the night go? Below, check out our full breakdown of this week’s episode.
Host: Amy Schumer
Like all the best “SNL” hosts, Schumer makes quality moments of comedy because of how game she is; rather than be trapped in a persona, she gleefully throws herself into characters and commits to outrageous concepts. She was even able to take on the role of straight man game show host (Kenan Thompson’s bread and butter for years now) with relative ease; it was...

It’s easy to forget, but John Mulaney was never actually a ‘Saturday Night Live’ cast member. Yes, he’d make the occasional pop-in to Weekend Update as a correspondent — “Shut the door.” — and even starred on his own Lorne Michaels-produced sitcom (with former “SNL” cast members Nasim Pedrad and Martin Short) titled “Mulaney.” We try not to talk about that second part. But Mulaney was never even a featured player at any point. Instead, he was a writer for six seasons. That time ended in 2012, but not before he gave the “SNL” viewing audience such joys as Stefon (which he co-created with Bill Hader), “Family Flix: Rocket Dog” (more on that later), and “The Obama Show,” to name just a select few. He’s also performed on Broadway, no big deal.
Still, the same people who claim to be comedy experts seem to have no idea who John Mulaney is.

Host: Chadwick Boseman
First of all: Boseman’s choice of ensemble for the monologue? Good God, the man knows how to dress. He also knows how to deliver a few solid jokes and dance, and it was good to see the writers take advantage of both elements.
It was also the closest that “SNL” got to taking advantage of Boseman’s status as America’s Preeminent Black Biopic Star, referencing his past work portraying not just the King of Wakanda, but historical figures like Jackie Robinson and James Brown. The episode in general was interesting in how it chose largely to use Boseman as a utility player rather than lean into his specific characteristics for sketches, which can usually go one of two ways: Create unique opportunities for weird-ass moments, or lead to a lot of straight-down-the-middle safe bets.

Other winners at the 15th Cph:dox are Wild Relatives, Laila At The Bridge and False Confessions.
Cph:Dox’s top award, the Dox:award was presented tonight to Marcus Lindeen’s The Raft (Swe-Den-us-Ger).
The film is about a social experiment in 1973, when 11 people were brought together on a raft for three months, sailing the Atlantic Ocean, so their behaviour could be studied by a radical Mexican anthropologist.
As well as using archive footage, Lindeen reconstructed the raft and reunited the participants together again in a film studio to look back on their experiences. The replica raft was also shown as...

“Saturday Night Live” knows people will be or are drinking on St. Patrick’s Day, whether they watch the episode or not. But for those people who choose to do their St. Patrick’s Day drinking while watching NBC’s seminal sketch comedy show, it’s arguable that this episode of “SNL” is the sketch comedy equivalent of that same amount of binge drinking — nd this is coming from someone who was stone cold sober watching this episode. Bill Hader, callbacks and longtime jokes, some insane accents, Arcade Fire, and an upsetting amount of crap at the end of the night? That’s definitely some binge drinking holiday in a nutshell.
Host: Bill Hader
Monologue-wise, Bill Hader did something more “SNL” hosts should do: He explained how things work around here. Specifically, he explained how he only learned how things worked around here after he finally left, after eight seasons and 210 episodes with this cast.

It’s not saying anything new to say that Sterling K. Brown is a very charming, captivating actor. So of course seeing him on “Saturday Night Live” for the first time ever is one of those highly-anticipated moments, because you’re not quite sure what the show will be able to do with an actor like him. And vice versa, as no one could have possibly known that Sterling K. Brown was going to take his very first “SNL” hosting gig as an opportunity to let everyone know he has no problem taking a break from the tears and being weird every once in a while.
Host: Sterling K. Brown
All right, maybe he doesn’t take a true break from the tears, but weirdness still abounds from the moment Brown takes the show’s stage for his opening monologue. And surprise! It is absolutely not a musical monologue. That’s honestly pretty surprising.

A new film directed by James DeMonaco is filming in New York City. “The Night,” produced by Blumhouse Productions, is casting a young male actor for a leading role. The story centers around three friends in 1982 and an eventful, adventure-filled night they experience in Staten Island, New York. James DeMonaco is a seasoned and successful screenwriter and director of the hit franchise of “Purge” horror films. The production is casting a male actor, aged 14–18, for the role of Albie Lenza. The team is searching for talent that is Caucasian or Latino/Hispanic. Physically, Albie is squat, like “a human bulldog.” He is neither a cool kid nor a nerd, is best friends with Anthony, and happily joins him on his quest. Albie and his family are Staten Island, New York natives. Performers should have a New York or East Coast feel. An authentic accent is a plus, but not required.
