Once considered an obscure hobby with a very moderate following in the West, anime has boomed into a global phenomenon over the past few decades. Nowadays, Japanese media is accessible and sought-after by American audiences, its place in pop culture being prominent and esteemed. While anime remains much bigger domestically than internationally, fans’ tastes across cultures remain mostly consistent.
The anime series that make it big in Japan, like One Piece, Demon Slayer, Spy x Family, are the same fans adore in America. Some shows that take off domestically and become adored fan favorites end up with a much different reputation overseas, ending up misunderstood and forgotten at best and hated at worst. These anime series and franchises might have an enormous following in Japan, yet American audiences fail to see their appeal.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, so in between present wrapping and chestnut roasting why not watch some anime? Despite Christmas having a markedly different cultural role in Japan compared to many Western countries there are a lot of shows that use it as a jumping off point. It’s a good opportunity for some heartwarming character moments, be they romance or friendship, and maybe a few antics involving presents or Santa costumes. So, for the twelve days of Christmas here are 12(ish) episodes from that are fun little additions to the season.
This is just Christmas episodes of anime series. This is because we all know that the ultimate Christmas anime movie is Satoshi Kon’s Tokyo Godfathers which should be immediately watched if not seen.

There are many popular anime titles across demographics and genre, and they certainly earn their praise. But with so many wonderful new anime titles gaining recognition and a wide viewership, there are some amazing series that get a little lost in the shuffle. These titles may be B-side titles, but real fans of their genre will see them as diamonds in the rough.
Stories like The Saint's Magic Power Is Omnipotent have cross-genre appeal, but that may make it somewhat hard to market. Cozy, comforting shows like Laid-Back Camp were really popular at the start, but fanfare has quieted down, even with the release of newer seasons that are just as good as the first.

Anime history is full of excellent fantasy series, from gritty sagas like Berserk to exciting magic-laden isekai adventures like Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. Due to the genre's immense depth, many great fantasy shows have slipped through the cracks, being overshadowed by titles with more advertising or pre-release hype. One example of this is Claymore, as despite being an excellent dark fantasy tale, it often gets overlooked when fans talk about the genre.
Claymore is based on the manga written and illustrated by Norihiro Yagi, the artist who also created Angel Densetsu and the long-running Ariadne in the Blue Sky. Serialized in Monthly Shnen Jump, the series debuted in June 2001. Claymore was one of the series running when Monthly Shnen Jump shut down in 2007, forcing the series to move to Shueisha's Jump Square magazine until the story concluded in late 2014. With an extended flashback narrated by Aoi, Laid-Back Camp breaks its usual formula for a dynamic and imaginative twist. The change in storytelling style allows for fresh visuals and a more humorous experience for viewers, departing from the traditional travelogue. Episode #7 of season 3 offers a well-timed and entertaining change of pace from the previous episodes, injecting new energy into the series.
With its third season underway, Laid-Back Camp uses a hilarious flashback to tell its latest camping trip. Thanks to Aoi's boisterous attitude and the constant interjections, an attempt to relay an older camping trip also becomes a wildly imaginative tale. It serves as a great change of pace from the previous, more traditional trip that hews close to the anime's usual style of travelogue.

Only new shows, so no Black Butler: Public School Arc, My Hero Academia season 7, Laid Back Camp season 3, etc. as if you're already a fan you'll be watching them anyway and if you're curious about any of them I would recommend you start at the very beginning, I hear it's a very good place to start.

"So Precious" by Asaka embodies the essence of Laid-Back Camp: focusing on the little things. "1 Nichi wa 25 Jikan" by Anna Tsurushima reflects the teamwork of the Jelee group in Jellyfish Can't Swim In the Night, and the struggles of being a creative. "fam!" by CHiCO captures the comedic energy and colorful style of Mission: Yokazura Family.
Something that anime fans always get excited about during each season is when new shows unveil their opening and ending themes. Despite being far less recognizable compared to opening themes, ending themes are used as bookends for episodes, and will oftentimes carry more emotional, character, or plot related elements. While this isn't always the case, it's still a crucial part of producing an anime that deserves far more recognition.

It’s already been a good 2024 for anime. Most notably, you have “The Boy and the Heron” winning Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, making for the first anime film to win the prize since another Hayao Miyazaki classic, “Spirited Away,” did so back in 2002. But outside of that big accomplishment, the year has also birthed a ton of great shows already, with a strong winter 2024 season that included great new shows like “Delicious in Dungeon,” “Bucchigiri,” and “Sengoku Youko.”
If Winter 2024 was a great start, Spring 2024 promises to be even more packed. That’s mainly because two of the biggest series currently ongoing are debuting their new seasons this April, the type of blockbuster series even non-anime fans might have heard of. Premiering its seventh season and 139th episode, “My Hero Academia” — an action series about the exploits of students at an academy for superheroes — will release on...

Mono introduces a comedy-focused story with a tangible long-term goal for characters' actions through their interest in photography. Mono changes focus from Afro's previous work by exploring the complexities of photography, keeping slice-of-life elements while adding a new twist to its narrative. Afro's Mono provides a refreshing evolution in the slice-of-life genre with tangible stakes and goals, making it an absolute must-read manga, and setting the anime adaptation up for success.
Amid many iconic anime series in the slice-of-life anime genre, an upcoming top contender is Mono, which will be adapted by studio Soigne. While it shares similarities with one of the genre's kings, Laid-Back Camp, Mono's own strengths have given the series its own personality, and, more importantly, a structure that may improve upon what Laid-Back Camp began. Fitting, since both come from the same author, Afro.
