Prime Video's Adaptation of Fantasy Novel Series Gets Exciting Update (3 Years After Getting Scrapped at Netflix)

After it was first reported to be in the works in 2024, it's now been revealed that Aaron Waltke will serve as series showrunner, co-writer, and executive producer. Original Wings of Fire author Tui T. Sutherland is also co-writing the series with Waltke and will serve as an executive producer as well, alongside Marc Resteghini of Jack Tar Productions.

Image
Guillermo del Toro's Tales of Arcadia trilogy is one of the most creative and entertaining trilogies from the creator. Wizards: Tales of Arcadia managed to offer a great conclusion to the trilogy and reach a major milestone rating on Rotten Tomatoes. What makes Tales of Arcadia great is what contributed to the beloved show and has since made it unforgettable.

Netflix's miniseries Wizards: Tales of Arcadia might not be one of the service's most popular shows, but those unfamiliar with it would be surprised to know that it secured a stellar 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The series is the third installment in Guillermo del Toro's underrated Tales of Arcadia trilogy, following Trollhunters and 3Below. As an executive producer and co-creator, Del Toro's visionary influence is evident throughout Wizards, blending mythical elements with modern themes to create a compelling narrative that appeals to both younger viewers and adults.

Netflix And Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein Casts A New Monster After Andrew Garfield's Exit
Image
Back in March 2023, the news broke that filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was in the midst of casting a new film version of "Frankenstein" that he was slated to write and direct. At the time, it was said that Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth were set to star and that Andrew Garfield was to play the Monster. According to actor Doug Jones (who has worked with del Toro on several feature films), the director had long been at work on a "Frankenstein" movie that was meant to visually resemble Bernie Wrightson's "Frankenstein," a heavily illustrated printing of Mary Shelley's 1818 novel made by Marvel Comics back in 1983. At the time of Jones' comments, however, he was slated to play the Monster himself, as the actor commented on what "my look" would have been. That Wrightson-inspired version eventually evolved into the version mentioned above, which is being produced for Netflix.

Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans Review – A Finale At War With Itself
Guillermo del Toro at an event for Splice (2009)
How much of the journey is worth it when you’re scratching your head at the destination? That’s the question one must confront in Guillermo del Toro’s Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans.

Originating from the book series created by del Toro and Daniel Kaus, 2016 series Trollhunters kicked off Tales of Arcadia as part of Netflix’s quest to produce original animation for children. You don’t go into Trollhunters and its two series successors, 3Below and Wizards, expecting form-breaking storytelling for Western children’s cartoons, but each series had plenty to offer: Del Toro’s colorful realms with their own mythology, slapstick one-liners in the midst of swordplay, and colorful creatures from lovable Aaarrrgghh (Fred Tatasciore) to the paternal Blinky (Kelsey Grammar) with his teacher bravado.

All set in the sleepy town of Arcadia, Trollhunters explored the mounting responsibilities of a Chosen-One mantle held by a human boy...

Netflix’s Behind Her Eyes Cast: Where Have You Seen Tom Bateman and Eve Hewson Before?
Image
Netflix psychological thriller Behind Her Eyes, adapted from Sarah Pinborough’s hit novel of the same name, sets its cast an unenviably tough task (and not just because almost everyone’s having to do a regional accent). Through subtleties and shifts in their performances, Eve Hewson, Tom Bateman, Simona Brown and Robert Aramayo need to keep the audience invested while keeping us guessing. What is it we’re watching? Is this six-part series the tale of Adele and David’s brittle marriage and the secrets that bind them? Or the story of single-mother Louise (Simona Brown) getting in over her head with this glamorous new couple? Could it be something else entirely?

While you’re asking yourself those questions, you’ll likely be asking another: where have I seen that guy before? While we can’t help with the former and stay spoiler-free, we can answer that one…

Will John Rhys-Davies Return as Sallah in Indiana Jones 5?
Image
If Indiana Jones 5 starts shooting in May as planned, original star John Rhys-Davies is on board to return as Sallah is he gets the call. After years of gestating in development hell, Indiana Jones 5 finally appears to be on track with James Mangold in the director's chair. Last month, Disney confirmed that the plan was to begin filming the sequel this spring and release the movie in 2022.

In 1981, John Rhys-Davies appeared as Sallah in the original Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, where he becomes a close friend to Indy. He reprised the role in 1989 for the third installment of the series, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Though Rhys-Davies isn't as confident as Disney that production will start in May, he recently regaled to ComingSoon.net that he'd be available to return if needed.

‘Wizards’ VFX Pros Share How They Created the Magic in Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix Series
Image
“Wizards,” premiering Aug. 7 on Netflix, marks the culmination of Guillermo del Toro’s animated “Tales of Arcadia” triptych of TV series that includes “Trollhunters” and “3Below.” The DreamWorks Animation production follows wizard trainee Douxie, voiced by Colin O’ Donaghue, on an epic adventure that sees him and friends Jim (Emile Hirsch), Claire (Lexi Medrano) and Steve (Steven Yeun) travel in time to Camelot, among other wondrous worlds.

“Wizards” introduces the domain of magic makers, complete with a flying castle, even as it includes the realms of aliens and trolls. The first episode alone required more than 1,000 VFX shots. “We are ambitious here and push well beyond the limits of daytime TV animation in certain areas,” del Toro says. “We were trying to keep the entire world visually cohesive, and VFX was crucial to take the scale jump.”

Visual effects supervisor Greg Lev and compositing supervisor Brandon Tyra, who worked on all three series,...

Wizards is the final installment of #TalesofArcadia…unless we can heckle @Netflix and @Dreamworks into more. https://t.co/w7XLgdPBR3

And just under 24 hours later, both corporate entities caved! Dreamworks and Netflix announced today that the Tales of Arcadia saga is getting a grand movie finale. Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans is set to premiere sometime in 2021.

“Team Trollhunters committed, about a decade ago, to try and push the boundaries of 3D CGI animation made for TV. We outlined a vast trilogy of interconnecting mythology and characters that we always hoped could culminate with a massive ‘all-stars reunion’,” creator and executive producer Guillermo del Toro said in a statement.

Chasseurs de Trolls (2016)
How Wizards: Tales of Arcadia Finishes What Trollhunters Started
Chasseurs de Trolls (2016)
In the nearly four years since Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia debuted on Netflix, the animated series created by Guillermo del Toro, and produced by Dreamworks, has introduced viewers to Arcadia Oaks, reluctant heroes, and a society of trolls over the course of three seasons. Then, the adventures continued with two seasons of 3Below, featuring humanoid aliens who crash land on earth whilst escaping a civil war. Now, the final chapter of the Tales of Arcadia franchise, Wizards, debuts on August 7 with a time-traveling fantasy epic that spans Camelot and the suburbs.

In addition to introducing new characters, and re-introducing previous ones, Wizards also seeks to pull the threads together of the entire trilogy, and fill in the blanks on events only previously referenced.

Set immediately following the events of 3Below’s second season, Wizards picks up with Merlin’s apprentice Douxie (voiced by Colin O’Donoghue), and a magical war across...

Diego Luna on ‘Pan y Circo,’ His New Dinner-Discussion Series with Amazon Prime Video
Image
Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal’s La Corriente del Golfo has teamed with Amazon Prime Video on a new issue-driven conversation series “Pan y Circo” (Bread and Circus), which will launch globally on the platform on Friday (Aug. 7).

Using an innovative new format of Luna’s own design, the series seats a group of different personalities with unique perspectives on a common subject around a table for a meal (the “pan”) and discussion (the “circo”). The table-centric model has hints of Facebook’s Jada Pinkett Smith-hosted “Red Table Talk,” though Luna has been developing this series for several years and the differences in the programs are perhaps more pronounced.

In “Pan y Circo” the meal share equal billing with the conversation, and each episode starts in the kitchen where Luna and that dinner’s chef kick off discussions about the topic and soup du jour. After the final course the meal is served,...

Chasseurs de Trolls (2016)
Guillermo del Toro Originally Pitched ‘Trollhunters’ As a Live-Action Drama Like ‘Stranger Things’
Chasseurs de Trolls (2016)
It may seem like Guillermo del Toro is up to a lot of different things at once. But while his current projects may seem to verge wildly at the moment, from the award-nominated fantasy film “The Shape of Water” to the Netflix/Dreamworks Animation series “Trollhunters,” there is one common element — one which unites those projects as well as much of his past work.

“I’m a guy that’s been doing fairy tales all his life,” del Toro told IndieWire. “It can be ‘Shape of Water,’ it can be ‘Pacific Rim,’ it can be [‘Trollhunters’]. It can be Pan’s Labyrinth. There is that thruline.”

While the intention might be the same, we do see variations in del Toro’s approach to making film and television. For example, the second season of “Trollhunters,” which premieres Friday on Netflix, is far less adult than some of his other work, even though...

DreamWorks and Netflix Expand Their Animation with Six New Series
That “Kids” tab on that you get before the welcome screen on your Netflix is about to get more use as they are adding six new series for your kids and some of us adults to watch.

Film success seems to be the contributing factor for some of these series as they are continuations from those films. But some of these are just great series and continuing them is kind of a no brainer.

DreamWorks Trolls: The Beat Goes On!

A 344-million-dollar profit at the box office will see Trolls continuing with a new series. With that if you’re expecting Justin Timberlake, Ana Kendrick, or anyone else returning from the movie think again. Skylar Astin (Pitch Perfect 1 and 2) and Amanda Leighton (This Is Us, The Fosters) will be filling the roles of Branch and Poppy with original songs written by Alana Da Fonseca (Pitch Perfect 3). Although I...

She-ra is Making an Animated Comeback on Netflix!
Netflix and Dreamworks Animation have announced that they have a new slate of animated series projects in development that are set to launch next year. One of the most exciting projects that came with the announcement includes a revival of the classic 80s series She-Ra: Princess of Power!

I hope that the series turns out to be good. I think it's something that my girls are going to love. I'm sure most of you are familiar with She-Ra, but if not, she is also known as Princess Adora and is the twin sister of Prince Adam a.k.a. He-Man. She was kidnapped as a baby by the Horde's leader Hordak. She is eventually given the Sword of Protection, which parallels He-Man's Sword of Power, gaining the power to transform into She-Ra.

The series is being developed by showrunner Noelle Stevenson, who is the Eisner-winning co-creator of Lumberjanes. Here’s...
