Exclusive: Two shows are being lined up to replace Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella musical which closes after a disappointing, short-lived run in London’s West End.
News of Cinderella’s closure became a contentious affair, causing members of the actors union Equity to picket outside the Gillian Lynne Theatre. Cast, crew, musicians and those working backstage were angered with management because many heard about the show’s demise via social media.
However, no time has been wasted in finding new tenants for the Gillian Lynne. Producers stampeded the place in almost impolite haste.
Tickets for the show that immediately follows Cinderella into the theater in London’s Covent Garden will be on sale by the end of next week.
Deadline has learned that it will be the much trumpeted Elliott & Harper, Catherine Schreiber and Leeds Playhouse production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, adapted from C.S.

Regina King has built her award-winning acting career on a rock-solid foundation of memorable roles, and, after a host of small screen directing gigs on shows like Southland, This Is Us and Insecure, her smash directorial feature debut, One Night in Miami—which made its virtual premiere on King’s 50th birthday—shows she’s building just as sturdy a big screen directing career too. The film, adapted from Kemp Powers’ stage play, reimagines a night in which four icons meet—Cassius Clay, Jim Brown, Sam Cooke and Malcolm X—and discuss their roles in much-needed societal change.
Deadline: The film opens not in Miami, but at Wembley Stadium, for the bout with Henry Cooper. It’s how we are introduced to Muhammed Ali, as Cassius Clay, before meeting the others. How did these scenes help you to begin telling this story?

Time and time again during this year’s pandemic, movie studios have had to make the best of a bad situation. HBO Max’s list of new releases for December 2020 comes along with the most extreme example yet.
WarnerMedia undoubtedly had big plans for Wonder Woman 1984 when it scheduled it for a holiday release last year. After moving it to the summer, however, the conglomerate had to delay its theatrical release time and time again. Now HBO Max is the lucky winner of the saga, as it gets to premiere the long-awaited sequel on its servers on Dec. 25.

The month plays host to a whole host of high-powered documentaries like Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults (Dec. 3), Alabama Snake (Dec. 9), and the Tiger Woods documentary Tiger (Dec.

The moment gamers have been waiting the last 12 months for has finally arrived. Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 are now in the hands – assuming you managed to get a pre-order in, of course – of those they were intended for, ushering in an all-new generation of adventures boasting unparalleled visual fidelity, performance and scope. Microsoft and Sony may be somewhat late to the party, so to speak, for those who primarily consume their games on high end PC rigs, but with the minimum bar now raised (and last-gen retired), folks from all camps can expect to see publisher and developer alike push the boundaries of what was thought possible.

Important days lay ahead for Sony. As a returning participant in next-gen gaming with the PlayStation 5, the company, like Microsoft, is doing everything it can to not only keep hold of its loyal install base, but increase that millions-strong figure even further. It’s no secret, of course, that the former has been the runaway winner this gen with the PS4, thanks largely to one of the strongest first-party lineups of any console to date.
Microsoft, on the other hand, has been forced to play catch-up from the start with the Xbox One brand, predominantly due to then-Xbox boss Don Mattrick mandating a strict set of deeply anti-consumerist restrictions for the hardware. There’s still a ways to go until the two are on an even keel once again, then, though under Mattrick’s replacement, Phil Spencer, Microsoft has pioneered a number of industry-leading initiatives, including Game Pass.

The movie follows two high school seniors ‘Vivien’ (Thorne) and Roy (Mascolo) who at first glance appear to have starkly different personalities. Vivien is a highly accomplished student, with a passion for physics and keen to get into a prestigious American university. She seems to live her own life as a mathematical formula that drives her to look at her own happiness as something to be postponed into the future. Roy, on the other hand, is a troubled and problematic young man who, due to a trauma suffered as a child, sees his desires continually hindered by a past that seems to constantly haunt him. However, mathematics too has its variables and, as always happens, life manages to weave events together...

With Lovecraft Country still providing HBO and HBO Max with its horror content through October, the streamer is looking elsewhere for its spooky season offerings. HBO Max’s new releases for October 2020 feature some truly awesome horror library titles.
Jordan Peele’s Us, John Carpenter’s The Thing, and David Fincher’s Se7en all arrive on Oct. 1. That alone should be enough to last you through spooky season. And if it doesn’t, It: Chapter Two is right there as well. In relation to the library titles, this isn’t HBO Max’s strongest month from an original perspective. But there is still plenty to like here. The West Wing election special arrives on Oct. 15. That will be followed by David Byrne...

Let me preface this by saying that it’s only September and we’ve got a long, long, long way to go before the Covid-19 delayed Oscars next April. But even at this early, speculative stage of the awards conversation, this is pretty remarkable: there could be two or more women nominated for Best Director for the first time in history. What’s more jaw-dropping is that we could also see the first two women of color ever nominated for directing.
Seetiff flashback: Oscars have looked to Toronto International Film Festival for decades
We recently opened Oscar predictions, and as of this writing about 1,000 users have already made their initial picks, and two women number among our top five. For more than 30 years, Regina King has been acting’s equivalent of the go-to player.
Whatever role directors threw at her — Detective Lydia Adams on the TNT police drama Southland, the unflappable Sharon Rivers in Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk, or an honest-to-god superhero in Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen for HBO — King has hit it out of the park.
Now with one Oscar (for If Beale Street Could Talk) and three Emmys on her shelf (and a possible fourth on the way for her performance in Watchmen), King has stepped behind the camera. One Night in Miami, her feature debut ...

Bella Thorne sure has caused a stink over her OnlyFans account. She created her own personal profile earlier this month, making over $1 million dollars on the first day. Within a week, she'd taken over $2 million from fans. She'd planned to make a documentary about the experience with indie director Sean Baker, who won acclaim for his films The Florida Project and Tangerine. Following backlash from original content creators on OnlyFans and sex workers who believe Bell Thorne is doing the app a disservice, Sean Baker has now disavowed any and all connection to Bella Thorne and her proposed OnlyFans movie.
It appears that Bella Thorne will move forward with her documentary about OnlyFans, but Sean Baker definitely won't be behind the helm. Bella Thorne has angered sex workers who rely on OnlyFans for income, especially with the nation still locked in a public health crisis. Those responsible for the backlash...

2020, as well as being an all-round garbage fire, is likely to go down as a strange year for film. Almost all of year’s biggest titles remain in limbo, waiting for cinemas to be able to safely reopen. That said, more than half way through the year, we have now seen a lot of excellent films getting released. Some managed to sneak in to cinemas in ‘the time before’, but many have made their debuts via streaming or paid VOD.
Even with a much reduced slate, there are still great films out there that have either got lost in the shuffle or might not have had the mainstream appeal to connect with an audience as wide as they deserve. Here, we’ve got several of the Hey U Guys staff together to pick some of their favourites of 2020 so far that you might not have caught up with yet.
