Hello Kitty Movie at Warner Bros. Finally Gets Production Update After 3 Years
Image
Hello Kitty fans finally have an update on the official upcoming movie by Warner Bros., FlynnPictureCo., and Sanrio, receiving some positive production news nearly six years after its initial announcement in 2019 and three years since its previous major update.

Following years of silence, the Hello Kitty movie is still in production at Warner Bros., as revealed in a Sanrio media alert by Fortune through Afp last month. The film was first announced nearly six years ago in March 2019, with Warner's New Line Cinema (Lord of the Rings trilogy) and FlynnPictureCo. acquiring the rights to the film. The official Hello Kitty theme park in Hainan, China, is likewise on track to open next year.

Jack Paglen In Talks To Script New ‘Maze Runner’ Movie For 20th Century Studios
Image
Jack Paglen (Transcendence) is in talks to write a new Maze Runner film for 20th Century Studios, Deadline can confirm.

While details as to the plot of the film are under wraps for the moment, it’s described as a continuation of the story of the last three films, released between 2014 and 2018, rather than a direct sequel.

Based on the dystopian YA book series by James Dashner, The Maze Runner takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, where a group of young survivors must navigate deadly mazes, treacherous landscapes, and sinister organizations as they uncover the truth about their past and fight for their freedom. Wes Ball directed the original 2014 film, as well as sequels Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015) and Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018), all ahead of Disney’s acquisition of Fox. Dylan O’Brien and Kaya Scodelario starred in the films, which grossed over $948 million worldwide in total.

After producing the original trilogy,...

Why the Magic Order Can't Stop Wanted's Fraternity - Millarverse Addresses a Major Plot Hole
Image
The latest issue of Mark Millar's Big Game limited series answers another looming question about how his sprawling, shared continuity fits together, explaining why The Magic Order has not intervened to save the world from the evil Fraternity of Super Criminals, first introduced in Millar's Wanted, now let by the firmly villainous Wesley Gibson, protagonist of that series.

Big Game #3 – written by Mark Millar, with art by Pepe Larraz – features an appearance by the Magic Order, which serves to explain how the Order and the Fraternity could coexist.

While the explanation might satisfy for now, it may in fact be set up for a reversal, which could find Cordelia Moonstone, current leader of the Order, join Kick-Ass and the Millarverse's remaining heroes to defeat Wesley and the Fraternity.

"Like Creating a Universe Around Jaws": Mark Millar Calls Out Star Wars Ahead of Big Game Crossover
Image
Since the property’s sale to Disney in 2012, the Star Wars franchise has become a galvanized subject of some controversy, and its newest, and perhaps most cutting critic, writer Mark Millar, finally might be explaining why. Taking to social media, Millar put out his take on Twitter this last week on the underlying reasons the once mighty juggernaut has not quite hit its potential. As per most of Millar’s observations, there seems to be at least a glimmer of saliency to his perspective.

Millar is currently the proprietor behind Millarworld, a creator-owned comic book company now owned by Netflix for the purpose of translating Millar’s vast original intellectual property, including his evil version of Batman called Nemesis, to screen. Millar is himself currently on the eve of releasing his own crossover comic intended to knit together his comics universe, including big names such as Kick-Ass and Wanted (as...

Wilderness Reform is the follow up book to the Query Brothers’ first novel, Old Country, which was published this July by Grand Central Publishing.

Wildernesses Reform tells the story of a group of teenagers who are shipped off to a juvenile reform camp only to discover the program has a far more sinister agenda than ever imagined. Jupiter's Legacy Had a Massive $200M Budget, Making It One of Netflix's Biggest Bombs
Image
Netflix is not moving forward with Jupiter's Legacy season 2, meaning that the superhero show based on Mark Millar's comic of the same name will be a one-and-done venture. And an expensive one at that. As reports have emerged following the show's unceremonious cancelation, it has now been revealed that it came with a massive $200 million budget. In a word? Ouch.

How bad were the metrics? Jupiter's Legacy debuted May 7 on Netflix and today, with no one using the word "cancelled," the show is done. The cast is being released from their contracts. https://t.co/tb4sJaWBRY

— Borys Kit (@Borys_Kit) June 2, 2021

Jupiter's Legacy was meant to have multiple seasons and was viewed as a way for Netflix to get into the superhero game, much in the way that Amazon managed to do with The Boys. Unfortunately, that didn't pan out. As THR report Borys Kit revealed on Twitter after the news broke,...

‘Supercrooks’ Live-Action Millarworld Series Ordered By Netflix As ‘Jupiter’s Legacy’ Releases Cast
Image
Exclusive: Netflix is turning Mark Millar’s Jupiter’s Legacy series into a universe spanning an anthology franchise. The streamer has set a live-action adaptation of Supercrooks, which delves into the story of Millarworld’s super-villains, as the next installment of the Jupiter’s Legacy saga.

Meanwhile, Jupiter’s Legacy will not continue as an ongoing series. With Netflix and Millar going in a different creative direction with the IP and the talent options soon expiring, the streamer has opted to let the high-profile cast — led by Josh Duhamel, Leslie Bibb and Ben Daniels — out of their commitments to the show.

“We’re confident we’ll return to it later,” Millar said of Jupiter’s Legacy, which could come back in a different iteration, sources said.

Netflix has an anime series adaptation of Supercrooks, the superpowered heist comic about eight supervillains written by Millar and drawn by Leinil Francis Yu, which will be released later this year.

‘Magic Order’ Series Back in Development at Netflix as Mark Millar Sets New Spy Show
Image
The series adaptation of Mark Millar’s “The Magic Order” is back in development at Netflix, with Millar also announcing a new slate of projects at the streamer.

In a blog post on Thursday, Millar shared that “The Magic Order” is back on track after the streamer opted last year not to move forward with the iteration that had been in the works.

“Some time away has given us a chance to come back with a completely fresh look at the material, and we should be getting into our new writers’ room very shortly,” he wrote. “The Magic Order” was in early pre-production when it was announced in October 2020 that it would not proceed as planned. The show is based on Millar’s comic book series of the same name.

Millar also announced that “The Magic Order” Volumes 2 and 3 will be released this fall. Volume 2 by Stuart Immonen will drop in October,...

Jupiter’s Legacy Teaser Promises Vengeance
Mark Millar
Back in 2017, Netflix acquired the rights to Scottish comic writer Mark Millar’s Millarworld imprint. Since then, Netflix and Millarworld have teamed up on the comic series The Magic Order but have not brought any of Millar’s other comic creations to the live-action television realm.

Well, that will all change soon! Netflix has finally unveiled the first fruit of their Millarworld collaboration in the form of a release date and teaser for Jupiter’s Legacy. Jupiter’s Legacy is a Millar superhero comic from 2013. This adaptation will arrive on Netflix on May 7, 2021. Check out the first teaser below.

While there isn’t much substance in that teaser, that’s Ok. The people don’t need substance out of 30-second superhero show teasers, they need style…they need atmosphere. And that clip is nothing if not atmospheric.

‘The Magic Order’ Not Moving Forward; Netflix Series Was Based On Mark Millar Comic
Image
Exclusive: Netflix has opted not to proceed with The Magic Order, its upcoming series based on the Mark Millar comic published by Netflix. The project had been in early pre-production in Prague for a targeted 2021 start. It had not yet begun casting, with scripts still being written.

I hear Netflix brass continue to be high on The Magic Order IP; upon release, the comic became the highest selling new comic-book launch in almost 20 years, with additional volumes coming soon.

I hear a decision was made that the series as currently envisioned won’t move forward but the streamer hopes to revisit The Magic

Order as a TV series in the future.

The large scope of the project and the global uncertainty amid the pandemic were a factor in the decision not to go forward with the series, though not the primary one, I hear.

Netflix Announces Full Slate of Millarworld Movies and TV Shows
Netflix, the world's leading internet entertainment service, today announced its first slate of films and series based on the stories of Mark Millar. Netflix acquired Millar's company, Millarworld, last year and since then has been developing projects with Mark and Lucy Millar, including The Magic Order, which has been published as Netflix's first comic book and was the biggest selling new comic-book franchise in nearly 20 years.

Said Millar about the impending slate of new Netflix series.

"My wife Lucy and I are eleven months into our jobs at Netflix and it's everything we hoped for to the power of ten. To see a movie based on your work every couple of years is incredibly exciting, but to see them all happening at once like this and with talent this high-end is just off the scale. These are writers and directors I've privately been sending fan-mail to over the last eighteen...

Millarworld Film Adaptations in Development at Netflix With Ted Melfo, Neal Moritz
Netflix has set its first slate of films based on the stories of Mark Millar, and enlisted a number of A-list talent to develop the movies along the way.

The first three comics to get the film adaptation treatment are “Empress,” “Huck,” and “Sharkey the Bounty Hunter.”

“Empress” follows Queen Emporia, who is married to the worst dictator in the galaxy, King Morax. After escaping his palace with her children, Emporia and her family must hide from Morax and his army at all costs — even if it takes teleporting from planet to planet to avoid them. “Kingkiller Chronicle” writer Lindsey Beer is adapting the comic book into a feature film, with Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum set to produce.

Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe are producing “Huck,” with “Hidden Figures” director Ted Melfi penning the script. The story is set in a quiet seaside town, where the main character...

Netflix to Develop Series Based on Mark Millar’s ‘American Jesus,’ ‘Jupiter’s Legacy’
Netflix has put multiple projects based on properties from Mark Millar’s Millarworld into development as original series, Variety has learned.

One of those projects is “American Jesus,” based on the Millarworld comic of the same name. The series follows a twelve-year-old boy who suddenly discovers he’s returned as Jesus Christ. He can turn water into wine, make the crippled walk, and, perhaps, even raise the dead.

The series would be multi-lingual, featuring both English and Spanish. Everardo Gout and Leopoldo Gout will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers, with Everardo also directing. Everardo previously directed for the Marvel-Netflix series “Luke Cage” and has directed multiple episodes of the upcoming Facebook Watch series “Sacred Lies.” Leopolodo has produced projects like the film “Molly’s Game” and the series “Zoo” and “Instinct” for CBS. Leopoldo Gout and Everardo Gout are repped by CAA.
