Auggie is at its best when Felix is vulnerable. The same goes for the actor playing Felix. Kind hasn’t been this good since A Serious Man.

It doesn’t have enough substance to fill its runtime, but it explores some intriguingly thorny ideas along the way.

Even with the short running time, writer-director Matt Kane and cowriter Marc Underhill exhaust most of their ideas early. But Kind is touching throughout, as a man who just needs to feel wanted.

Auggie isn’t “Her,” but it’s short enough to hold our interest, even if it’s not engrossing enough to manage anything more.

Auggie is purposefully grim in style and execution, moving at a snail's pace and seemingly photographed in drab shades of gray. Although its running time is a mere 81 minutes, the pic seems to last forever.
