Director Seema Desai’s film about a elderly couple in the town of perfumes, Kannauj, trying to fob off the stink of decay in their 23-year-old marriage, has everything going for it: a solid cast, for one. Ashutosh Rana and Sheeba Chadha, two durable dependables of the entertainment world, struggle hard to overcome the listlessness at the heart of the plot.
Chaddha and Rana have their moments—how can they not?! But the projection of a fractured marriage remains largely frayed and feeble right to the predictable end.
Fine young actor Pavail Gulati plays the couple’s absentee son, Yug, who returns home to cement his parents’ splintered marriage. Gulati, too, pitches in with a sincere performance but fails to lift the end product from the morass of languorousness. Yug’s workplace and his friends at work seem like caricatures moonlighting as professionals.
There is no dearth of good intention...

Is Dr. Jason Bull (Michael Weatherly) going to shut down the Trial Analysis Corporation in the series finale? It seems like Bull is leading up to that, with only a few episodes left. Following a rerun on May 5, the CBS drama returns with its final three episodes on May 12, 19, and 26. First up is “The Envelope, Please,” in which “Bull breaks from the stress he’s been under for months when a mysterious delivery causes him to blackout for hours, leaving him with no memory of his movements,” according to CBS. CBS While no information is out yet about the May 19 episode, the logline for the May 26 series finale teases that “Bull and the Trial Analysis Corporation team head to court one last time to finalize a negligent homicide defense that will change the nature of their company and their lives forever.” It is aptly titled “Goodbye.” That “one last time...

Netflix has acquired global rights to Ace Entertainment’s YA romance, The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, starring Haley Lu Richardson (Unpregnant), Ben Hardy (6 Underground), Jameela Jamil (The Good Place), Rob Delaney (Catastrophe), Dexter Fletcher and Sally Phillips (Bridget Jones’s Diary).
The film from director Vanessa Caswill (PBS’ Little Women miniseries) and the producers of the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before franchise is based on the novel of the same name by Jennifer E. Smith. It watches as strangers Hadley (Richardson) and Oliver (Hardy) begin to fall for each other on their flight from New York to London. But is it misfortune or fate that separates them when they land? The probability of ever finding each other again seems impossible, but love — and London — may have a way of defying the odds.

The conclusion of a four part series by Cláudio Alves
In the cinema of Hou Hsiao-Hsien, the 21st century started with a neon dream. The camera follows Shu Qi's Vicky as she runs through a Taipei tunnel, lights flickering above. Everything happens in slow-motion, flickers turn into waves and the actress's movement makes a strange unnatural dance. She looks back at us, hair flying in a cloud of black tendrils, her eyes asking us to follow her down the tunnel, like Alice down the rabbit hole. It's a hypnotic sight, made more seductive by the music of Lim Giong, house beats and techno dronings that transform the screen into a pulsing heart.
2001's Millennium Mambo fulfills the formalistic promise of Daughter of the Nile, transcending Goodbye South, Goodbye's tethering to material truth. Like its protagonist, the film looks back at its director's history while moving forward to an unknown future.

In the heyday of big-screen entertainment Thailand was home to some 700 standalone single-screen theaters. By 2019 only one of them survived in Bangkok. It was the Scala, a thousand-seat cinema that opened its doors on New Year’s Eve 1969 and closed them 51 years later, in July 2020, when it was shut, razed to the ground, and turned into a shopping mall. Scala, Ananta Thitanat’s heart-shaking documentary, is a chronicle of its demolition, but also a tribute to the mystical power it held over generations of patrons, told by the people who worked there and were eventually hired to dismantle it. Few films since Tsai Ming-liang’s Goodbye, Dragon Inn have captured the magic of a movie theater with the same awe Thitanat pours into Scala. Her feature debut, truly one of the finest premieres at this year’s Berlinale, is an engrossing obituary that feels joltingly alive in its struggle to rescue a place from oblivion,...

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Goodbye, Dragon Inn (Tsai Ming-liang)
Though far better known by its English title, the appropriately elegiac Goodbye, Dragon Inn, Tsai Ming-liang’s 2003 masterpiece bears a rather different name in Mandarin (rendered here via pinyin): Bú sàn, which roughly translates to “never leaving,” or—if one prefers the Sartre connotation—“no exit.” It forms the root of two distinctly contradictory Chinese idioms, which perfectly encapsulate the lamentation and beauty of Tsai’s film: Tiān xià méi yǒu bù sàn de yán xí, the infamous “all good things must come to an end,” and Bù jiàn bù sàn, which more or less means “even if we don’t see each other, don’t give up and leave,” or “I’m not leaving until I see you.

One of the biggest surprises on Emmy nominations morning popped up in an unexpected category, when two CBS multi-camera sitcoms landed nominations for Comedy Directing. Freshman series “B Positive” earned a spot for its pilot episode directed by James Burrows, while concluding series “Mom” also nabbed a nomination for its long-time director James Widdoes, the first time the eight-season show received recognition in this category.
Even more surprising than seeing both of these Chuck Lorre shows get nominated is how long it’s been since two multi-cam sitcoms have received citations from the Emmys for directing in the same season: a whopping 16 years. The last duo to pull off this feat was “Everybody Loves Raymond” and “Will & Grace” back in 2005, with the latter directed by Burrows. Both lost to the first episode of “Desperate Housewives,” which kicked off an unbroken trend of non-studio-audience shows running the table in this category.

Big World Pictures has acquired all U.S. and Canadian rights to “A Man of Integrity,” the 2017 feature from Iranian auteur Mohammad Rasoulof that won the top prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film, the writer-director’s sixth, tells the story of a goldfish farmer with a keen sense of moral integrity named Reza, who moves to a remote village in the countryside of Northern Iran to live a simple life with his wife and young son. Those plans go awry, however, as he becomes tangled up in webs of trouble wrought by local corruption and a mysterious, powerful company that has its grips on their village.
Variety‘s review called the movie “a tense, enraging drama about corruption and injustice” that “provides a scathing critique of contemporary Iranian society.”
Rasoulof has frequently run into trouble with the Iranian government due to his work.

A new remaster of George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass highlights why it was such an important record. Not just as an album, but of the time it was made. Besides the lead guitarist for the biggest act in showbiz history, it boasted players and a producer who each made an impact on the course of modern music. It’s been celebrating its 50th anniversary for a while now and it’s earned it. It was the first triple album by a single artist in rock history, and set the standard for longer long-playing albums.
Harrison set quite a few standards, including the first rock benefit project, The Concert for Bangladesh. As the Beatles guitarist, he demonstrated melodic and harmonic possibilities which hadn’t been explored in rock and roll, often changing the entire feel of songs with a single riff. As their in-house tonal experimentalist, his sitar-led songs...

Alice in Chains guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell has released the first single, “Atone,” from his upcoming solo album, Brighten, out October 29th.
“Atone” is a heavy track, although it’s undergirded by a sinister twang while the guitar riffs hit with grit and menace, as well as a bit of psychedelic unease. “Running out of time,” Cantrell wails right before the hook, “Gotta find a way to atone/Gotta find a way to atone/Trying to find a way to atone.”

The Mumbai film industry is on de facto lockdown after the local government mandated that all film and TV shoots be paused until at least May 1 due to spiraling Covid-19 cases in the country.
Uddhav Thackeray, Chief Minister of the Maharashtra region, announced the decision on Wednesday evening (April 14). He stopped short of referring to the action as an official ‘lockdown’ but the measures do restrict anyone from being in a public place without a valid reason. Cinemas are also once again closed.
The restrictions have put the blockers on Bollywood, with a string of high-profile productions shuttered temporarily.
Of the numerous shoots currently underway in Mumbai, Deadline has confirmed that Ram Setu, Amazon’s first Indian co-production starring Akshay Kumar and produced by Abundantia Entertainment, has been delayed further by this week’s news. The film had already been put on hiatus after its star and 45 crew members all contracted Covid.

You can be excused if you don’t know the name Fancy Hagood. In 2015, when the singer-songwriter released his debut single “Goodbye,” he did so under a mysterious and clumsy moniker — Who Is Fancy. Hagood didn’t even appear in the music video for the pop song; instead, his voice was seen coming from a Bieber-lookalike actor. It was meant to sell an air of mystery, but the marketing strategy left Hagood feeling stuck in the shadows and questioning his sense of identity. Even a follow-up with Meghan Trainor and Ariana Grande,...

CoronavirusWith several stars and crew members testing positive for the coronavirus, many shoots have been halted.PTIFacebook / PTIWith the release of films like Sooryavanshi being pushed indefinitely and top stars Akshay Kumar, Vicky Kaushal and Bhumi Pednekar testing positive for the coronavirus, the danger of halting ongoing shootings of the projects looms large and so does the fear of many daily wage earners losing employment amid the surge in coronavirus cases in Maharashtra. As year 2021 appears to be a repeat of 2020, industry insiders say they are amping up safety measures, including regular Rtpcr tests, to control the spread of Covid-19 on the sets of the on-ground productions as they cannot afford to suspend filming activities. Not just Kumar, who was shooting for Ram Setu, as many as 45 members of the film's crew have also tested positive. As a precautionary measure, the actor was admitted to a city hospital on Monday.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.
The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.
This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

Only scripts written under the WGA guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for the Writers Guild of America Awards. This limited eligibility means that these precursor prizes, which reveals its roster for the 2021 WGA Awards on February 16, are not the most reliable barometer of the eventual Oscar nominees and winners. Indeed, in the past 11 years only 73 of the Writers Guild of America Awards nominees have numbered among the 110 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids.
Among those ineligible for consideration this year are some of the leading Oscar contenders, including the original screenplays for “Mank” and “Minari” and the adapted screenplays for “The Father,” “The Life Ahead” and “Nomadland.”
