Skinamarink, Late Night With The Devil and more join Shudder’s new “A Decade of Fearless” Blu-Ray Set
Image
If you’re a horror fan than there’s nothing better than Shudder’s streaming service. They’ve had quite the collection of curated titles as well as great exclusives over the years. Now, they’re celebrating 10 years of Shudder with a Blu-Ray set that features Shudder’s must iconic films. I went on a bit of a Shudder buying spree earlier this year and somehow didn’t pick up any of the titles included in the collection. Although, someone would probably have to pay me to actually put In A Violent Nature anywhere near my precious collection. But it seems like there’s a little bit of something in there for everybody.

Exclusive interview: Demián Rugna on ‘When Evil Lurks’
Image
Few horror films in recent years have hit with the ferocity, imagination and existential dread of When Evil Lurks. Written and directed by Argentina’s Demián Rugna (Terrified), the 2023 film blends supernatural terror with razor-sharp social commentary, delivering a story where demonic possession is not only contagious, but also unstoppable once the system decides it’s someone else’s problem. The result is a furious, violent descent into hellish horror and one that left genre fans reeling and critics hailing Rugna as one of the boldest voices in modern horror.

Now, When Evil Lurks is getting the prestige treatment it deserves, with a stunning new 4K and limited edition Blu-ray release from Second Sight Films. In our latest video interview, Rugna sits down with Erica Vilkus from Love Horror to talk about the new edition and the passion that went into curating it, including his appreciation for the respect Second Sight...

‘When Evil Lurks’ Limited Edition 4K/Blu-ray Review (Second Sight)
Image
Stars: Ezequiel Rodriguez, Demian Salomon, Luis Ziembrowski, Silvina Sabater | Written and Directed by Demián Rugna

When Evil Lurks (Cuando Acecha la Maldad) is the new feature film from Argentinian director Demián Rugna. Rugna assured himself a place in horror history with his film Terrified in 2017 and then vanished off the scene until his segment in last year’s Satanic Hispanics. Thankfully he didn’t make us wait another five years for something new, and When Evil Lurks premiered this year at TIFF as part of its Midnight Madness program.

Appropriately enough the film starts somewhere around midnight when Pedro and his brother Jimmy are awakened by the sound of gunshots somewhere in the woods. Going to investigate the next morning they find a body, or half of one anyway, with a strange device nearby and a notebook in a language the brothers don’t recognize nearby.

As it turns out...

When the latter falls from a yacht during a bender and is declared dead, doctors mistakenly harvest his organs. Omin rallies vampire bounty hunters from around the world to track down his missing parts.

When Evil Lurks Director Demián Rugna Developing New Vampire Horror Comedy Along With Sequel
Image
When Evil Lurks Director Demián Rugna eyes a sequel along with a new vampire horror-comedy film.

Per Bloody Disgusting, Rugna has set his sights on developing two new films in the coming years. The first will be a sequel to the breakout horror hit When Evil Lurks, while the second, Felix: A Complex Puzzle, will be a vampire horror-comedy revolving around Omin, a vampire who loses several key pieces of himself, and Felix, a hypochondriac who is unwittingly drawn into the film's sprawling story.

Per the official synopsis for Felix: A Complex Puzzle, "Omin, a hard-partying vampire playboy and leader of the notorious ‘Blood-Suckers’ clan. After falling into a river during a wild yacht bender, Omin is presumed dead and sent to the morgue, where doctors mistakenly harvest all his organs, including a lung. When Evil Lurks (2023)
‘When Evil Lurks’ Director Developing Vampire Comedy ‘Felix: A Complex Puzzle’
When Evil Lurks (2023)
Writer/Director Demián Rugna is keeping busy. The filmmaker is not only developing a sequel to When Evil Lurks but a new vampire horror-comedy, Felix: A Complex Puzzle, too, per a new press release.

Not only does Felix sound like a break from tone from Rugna, but it also sounds like a break from standard vampire fare: the vampire will be hunting down his own body parts this time.

The film follows “Omin, a hard-partying vampire playboy and leader of the notorious ‘Blood-Suckers’ clan. After falling into a river during a wild yacht bender, Omin is presumed dead and sent to the morgue, where doctors mistakenly harvest all his organs, including a lung. Waking up the next morning, disoriented and dismembered, Omin rallies vampire bounty hunters from across the globe—from Romania to Indigenous American clans—to track down his missing body parts. Meanwhile, in the Big City, we meet Felix,...

Exclusive: ‘When Evil Lurks’ Director Demian Rugna Developing Vampire Horror Movie ‘Felix,’ Inspired by ‘Fright Night’ and ‘The Lost Boys’
Image
After terrifying the entire world with last year’s When Evil Lurks, which I gave four stars straight out of its shocking TIFF Midnight Madness world premiere, Argentine filmmaker Demian Rugna is set to return with something completely different. Last month, we landed the exclusive first update and its full premise out of the Cannes 2025 international market. Read all of the grisly details below.

Currently in development with Buenos Aires–based production, financing, and sales label FilmSharks, Rugna’s upcoming project, Felix: A Complex Puzzle, is set to shake up the horror landscape in a whole new way. This time, it’s with a heavy dose of blood, absurdity, and fangs.

The project is said to contain the humor-and-genre combo punch of recent horror-comedy classic Zombieland. Its script concerns a legendary ancient vampire who wakes up in a morgue after a night of debauchery to find his vital organs have been harvested and donated nationwide.

This Bone Chilling 96% Rotten Tomatoes Spanish Horror Film Is Getting a Sequel
Image
2023’s supernatural horror When Evil Lurks, gave fans a nightmare for days. Directed by Demián Rugna, the possession horror flick garnered praises from audiences and critics alike for its violence, jump scares, and thematic concerns. From beginning to end, the movie is full of thrilling plot points, and lingering effects of the violence. In a new interview, Rugna revealed that a sequel is on the way.

Speaking during an episode of La Broma Infinita from the Argentine streaming channel Gelantina (via Bloody Disgusting), Rugna reveled the status of the script and the fact that it has found the funding to start filming, he said, “We have part two written, yes, and we’re just waiting for the funding to come through. We have to make some script modifications to make it perfect, but the studio that wants to make it is already there.” While Rugna doesn’t reveal the studio backing the project,...

Marvel Rivals Fans Demand Removal of ‘Horrible’ Potentially Pay-To-Win Feature
Image
The one-year anniversary of Marvel Rivals‘ alpha test should be a time of celebration, but NetEase Games has managed to turn it into a controversy that’s tearing through the community, and fast.

As part of the new Galacta’s Gift event launching today, the developer introduced “Chrono Shield Cards”—consumable items that prevent players from losing rank points after a competitive match defeat.

While the game has featured a similar mechanic since launch with Chrono Shield Tokens (automatically granted after four losses to protect you from the fifth), these new cards take things to another level.

A feature nobody asked for in Marvel Rivals

Marvel Rivals players can earn up to eight of these new Chrono Shield Cards during the event and hold a maximum of twenty at once, using them whenever they please to avoid the sting of defeat. It’s this “on-demand” rank protection that has the...

Justina’s Favorites of 2024
Image
In 2024, I was excited to see horror expand in several ways, from original concept horror films (The Coffee Table) to media preserving horror history (El Vamprio box set) to anniversaries of significant horror films (Mahal). I also had amazing opportunities this year to have memorable horror experiences that included Dracula, Chucky, and Wednesday Addams. And without further ado, here are my favorites of 2024.

10. Stranger Sings

Confession. I’ve never seen Stranger Things. However, as a big fan of musicals, when I learned about this musical horror comedy parody, I had to watch it. Stranger Sings follows the beloved Hawkins residents during the disappearance of young Will. It’s so silly and fun. I enjoyed it. This was a great introduction to the Stranger Things universe for someone like me, who can’t tell the difference between a Demogorgon and an Eggo waffle.

9. Late Night with the Devil

Proof that we...

Dune: Prophecy Accidentally Steals a Dark Plot Point From HBO's Other Huge 2024 Series

Quick Links What Did Mark Strong's Carmine Falcone Do in The Penguin? How Does Mark Strong Get a Similar Role in Dune: Prophecy?

The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 5, "In Blood, Truth," which premiered Sunday, Dec. 15 on HBO.

One of the major themes of Dune: Prophecy is corrupt politics. With five episodes down, it's not just about the Imperium. The drama is on a granular level, too. It's very obvious with Emperor Javicco and House Corrino.

In this case, it's a Game of Thrones-like story unfolding, as Ynez (the princess) thinks she is supposed to attain the throne. However, this tale of the Corrino crown leads to Javicco's actor, Mark Strong, getting a similar arc to his role in The Penguin, another massive HBO series.

Les Ordres du mal (2023)
Top 10 Horror Movies to Watch on Halloween
Les Ordres du mal (2023)
This Halloween, the OTTs are packed with malevolence and horror, as they all have a lot to offer. In this article, we have selected the top 10 films from Netflix, Prime Video, Shudder, Hulu, and HBO Max for you so that you don’t have to go through ratings and Metacritic reviews. These films have put their names as the top contenders in this genre in recent times. So, without further ado, let’s jump into the listicle, shall we?

Sister Death (2023)

Sister Death emerges as Netflix’s eerie Halloween offering, diverging from typical jumpscare horror. This visually arresting film navigates the realm of faith, intertwining sinister elements. However, its downfall lies in a disjointed narrative structure, akin to a fragile house of cards collapsing under scattered plot reveals.

Contrary to the acclaimed 2017 Spanish horror, Verónica, Sister Death struggles to meet elevated expectations as a prequel. Verónica stands as one of Netflix’s premier horror films,...

These Free Streamers Have Better Horror Movies than Netflix
Image
At The Streamable, we love watching movies and TV for free, especially if we don’t have to sit through ads. Tubi is great, but seeing an ad for car insurance in the middle of your movie tends to kill the vibe. As we race to Halloween, we looked up all the best scary movies and found that a huge number were streaming ad-free on Kanopy, which is free if your library participates. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Hoopla is another free streamer that just added a major horror partner.

Your library probably partners with either Kanopy or Hoopla (or both!), giving you an unexpectedly great package of ad-free entertainment.

Use Kanopy for the Best Horror Selection

My jaw dropped when I saw how many A+ horror movies were available ad-free on Kanopy. You can see 48(!) of Metacritic’s best-reviewed horror films.

Kanopy gives you recent horror masterpieces like “Hereditary,...

Out Come The Wolves Review: A Taut Survival Horror Flick That Takes A Bite Out Of Toxic Masculinity

Like the best hunters, Out Come the Wolves (2024) excels because of its restraint. Directed and co-written by Adam MacDonald (Slasher), the survival-horror film is a tight 87 minutes, but economy of runtime isnt its only strength. The cast features just three characters: Missy Peregrym (FBI), who collaborated with MacDonald on Backcountry, plays Sophie, a woman who comes from a family of hunters, while Damon Runyan (Star Trek: Discovery) plays Nolan, Sophies fianc whos never fired a weapon. Kyle (Reachers Joris Jarsky), a skilled hunter who grew up with Sophie, rounds out the trio and the love triangle.

‘Impractical Joker’ Sal Vulcano Has Always Been the Class Clown
Image
Sal Vulcano, the stand-up comedian who many fans know from his long-running prank show Impractical Jokers, is scared. Or at least, that’s what his jokes tell us. “A lot of my material is fear-based stuff, stories from my adult life and childhood,” he explains. Hence the name of his new comedy special, Terrified.

As Terrified cracks one million views on YouTube, Vulcano is back on his solo tour doing the comedy he loves. He recently talked to Cracked about his sitcom influences, the pros and cons of the comedy boom and the epic pranks he pulled as a seven-year-old.

“I was like the class clown guy. That’s what I was, I was voted Class Clown.”

“When I was young, my favorite show was The Jeffersons. I used to watch it with my grandparents, and I loved it so much. I used to memorize it. I remember in the third grade,...

Paul Tremblay on His Haunted New Novel ‘Horror Movie’ and the Joy of Having Robert Downey Jr. and M. Night Shyamalan Adapt His Books
Image
Horror author Paul Tremblay developed a deep love of spooky stories early on, and he tackles the haunted films genre with his newest novel, “Horror Movie” (out Tuesday via William Morrow and Company). The plot concerns a ’90s cult classic horror movie which left all but one cast member dead and the dark stories that are dredged up as a remake comes closer to reality.

Professionally, Tremblay is no stranger to scary movies, as his 2019 novel “The Cabin at the End of the World” was adapted into M. Night Shyamalan’s 2023 film “Knock at the Cabin.” Next up is an adaptation of his 2015 book “A Head Full of Ghosts,” which is set to be produced by Robert Downey Jr. and directed by Austrian filmmakers Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, who also helmed dark horror films like “Goodnight Mommy” and “The Lodge.”

Tremblay spoke with Variety about horror movies both real and imagined,...

Handling The Undead Interview: Director Thea Hvistendahl

The dramatic horror film Handling The Undead goes into a wider release this coming Friday. We had the opportunity to speak with the director and co-writer, Norwegian filmmaker Thea Hvistendahl about their debut feature film.    We talk about themes in the film such as second chances and sorrow, adpating John Ajvide Lindqvist's novel to screen, and what it meant to premiere at Sundance.   And do not worry horror nerds because at the end we did go into what it took to create the recently deceased son of Renate Reinsve's character, Anna. It's one of the best child puppets I've seen since Demian Rugna's Terrified. Even better because this time a whole crew was involved in making it animated.    Check out the interview...

Rashmika Mandanna Reacts To Criticism Over Her ‘Unclear’ Dialogue In Animal (Photo Credit – IMDb)

Animal emerged as a huge success at the box office, but it also had its share of controversies. Apart from the controversial row, the film faced trolls due to several reasons and one of those was Rashmika Mandanna’s dialogue, which was also included in the trailer. Brutal Beauty: Mario Bava’s ‘Blood and Black Lace’ at 60
Image
It’s no secret that horror too often elicits kneejerk reactions from narrow-minded critics who, for some reason or another, aren’t willing to give its particular brand of storytelling a fair shake. There are countless examples of films that have received lukewarm to scathing critiques from reviewers upon their release only to be embraced as classics years later, sometimes even by the same writers that originally did them dirty. Last House on the Left (1972), The Shining (1980) and, perhaps most famously, The Thing (1982) were all savaged for various reasons during their initial runs but are now not only thought of as staples of their genre but of cinema as a whole.

This was also the case for Mario Bava’s Blood and Black Lace (1964). Barely making a splash with audiences and critics alike when it was released in Italy 60 years ago this month, the picture’s impact would soon be gargantuan.

5 Unconventional Demonic Possession Horror Movies to Stream This Week
Image
At its most basic, possession horror exploits the primal fear of losing control over your own person, usually due to a demonic entity. Victims in a possession movie are rendered mere passengers in their bodies as a sinister force takes over and destroys them from the inside. That potent combination of body horror and a complete lack of free will makes for inherently terrifying and fertile ground for exploration. While possession horror is often tied to biblical battles of good versus evil, that’s not always the case.

This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to demonic possession horror titles that leave conventional depictions of faith and exorcisms behind for new terrain and metaphors.

Here’s where you can stream them this week.

When Evil Lurks: A Possession Horror Movie for People Sick of Possession Movies
Image
When Evil Lurks offers a new take on the possession trope, forcing viewers to forget everything they thought they knew about such a recurring theme in horror movies. Distributed by Shudder, the leading platform for horror movies, the movie was the streaming service's pick for 2023's Halloween, shocking audiences with a truly mean-spirited narrative that rejects any moral principles.

Demián Rugna, best known for the popular supernatural horror Aterrados, or Terrified, is the Argentinian director behind the film, and who is interested in making movies for horror fans, not the wider audience (per Bloody Disgusting). When Evil Lurks follows two brothers forced to leave their remote village after a demon-infected man unleashes an indomitable evil dangerously close to their home, unaware that by fleeing they are only leading the demon straight to their family.

Here's how When Evil Lurks is the perfect possession horror movie for those who are sick of possession horror movies.

Greg Nicotero Talks Romero, Zombies, Practical Effects and More at Rhode Island Comic Con [Event Report]
Image
This year’s Rhode Island Comic Con guest list boasted big names like Anthony Daniels, Carl Weathers, Carrie-Anne Moss, Christina Ricci, Evangeline Lilly, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Linda Hamilton, and Marissa Tomei, to name a few, alongside hundreds of vendors and artists.

A highlight of the weekend was an intimate panel with legendary special effects artist-turned-director Greg Nicotero, who shared his reflections on The Walking Dead now that it has come to an end, in addition to insight from nearly 40 years in the industry.

Nicotero’s fascination with the horror genre stems from his childhood. “I grew up in Pittsburgh, and there was a TV show called Chiller Theater on every Saturday night. The host was a guy called Bill Cardille, who plays the reporter in Night of the Living Dead. I would stay up every Saturday to watch it. July was classic horror month, so they would show Frankenstein,...

‘When Evil Lurks’ (2023) Review: Is It Really The Scariest Film of The Year?
Image
When brothers in a rural Argentinian town discover a possessed man, they decide to move him away with the help of some townspeople in the hopes of saving the town from being “infected”. What follows is the consequence of their arrogance, which may lead to the birth of true evil. When Evil Lurks is a Spanish-language Argentinian film directed by Demian Rugna (Terrified), starring Ezequiel Rodríguez and Demián Salomón in lead roles. I’d say that as a horror enthusiast, I’ve seen quite a few questionable films in my time, but this one has to take the cake for the most anxiety-inducing one. I could say this film is deliciously evil, at least for those who like to dabble in the world of horror, but it would be a disservice to how grotesque the whole thing is. When Evil Lurks is unlike anything I’ve seen before. It’s...

What to watch October 27, 2023: Movie awards contenders
Image
We probably won’t see this week’s streaming debuts on the Oscars’ nomination roster come January, but they offer a variety of genres that will satisfy whatever mood you find yourself in this weekend.

The contender to watch this week: “Pain Hustlers“

The opioid epidemic has fueled a wave of movie and TV shows in the last few years, from “Dopesick” and “Ben Is Back” to the gorgeous Oscar-nominated documentary “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed.” Hollywood’s latest Big Pharma indictment is a star-studded dramedy directed by “Harry Potter” alum David Yates. Based on a book by journalist Evan Hughes, “Pain Hustlers” features Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, Catherine O’Hara, and Andy Garcia in a crime saga revolving around a pharmaceutical start-up whose founder served two years in prison. Reviews have been tepid, but “Hustlers” is now streaming on Netflix following a limited theatrical release.

Other contenders:

When Evil Lurks Review | Thrilling Possession-Horror Entry Turns Shockingly Grotesque
Image
When Evil Lurks is a Spanish-language horror film that tackles the terrifying concept of demonic possession, offering a truly spine-chilling experience. The film features stunning cinematography and authentic production value, creating a visually appealing and immersive atmosphere. The makeup and special effects in When Evil Lurks are incredibly well-done, resulting in grotesque and nightmarish characters that will haunt your dreams.

The new Exorcist film may have been a box-office disappointment, but that doesn't mean demonic-possession movies are dead (no pun intended). From the supernatural series to anime, big-screen scares come in all shapes and sizes, it seems, but if done correctly, films that specifically tackle the crazed notion of demons taking hold of human bodies and minds are perhaps the scariest. Enter When Evil Lurks, a new Spanish-language feature from acclaimed writer-director Demián Rugna (Terrified). It's an excellent new addition to the nightmare-inducing subgenre of cinema, arriving just in time for Halloween.

Blink-182 Release Reunion Album One More Time…: Stream
Image
Blink-182 have officially released One More Time…, the first album to feature Tom DeLonge alongside Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker in over a decade. Check it out below via Apple Music and Spotify.

DeLonge left Blink in 2014, as the band was preparing to record the follow-up to their 2011 album Neighborhoods. Hoppus and Barker released two albums, California and Nine, with the singer-guitarist’s replacement, Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio. The pop-punk veterans announced the return of DeLonge last year with the single “Edging,” then recorded One More Time… during their reunion tour. Given their history, it makes sense that the group said the record covers “themes of tragedy, triumph, and most importantly, brotherhood.”

Produced by Barker, One More Time… also features the singles “More Than You Know,” “Dance with Me,” and “Fell in Love,” as well as its title track.

In the lead up to the album’s release, Hoppus...

'Terrified' Offers Brutal, Unforgiving Horror From the Director of 'When Evil Lurks'
Image
With Halloween right around the corner, many are searching for hidden gems to get their fix of frights for the spooky season. Scares come in many different packages, but there is one resource that is close to omnipresent across all horror, one that has been overused and cheapened to a point where it's more of a crutch than a crown jewel of the genre: The jump scare. Although the jump scare is generally considered a tactless resource whose overuse is found mainly in lower quality horror films, there is an underrated beast of a horror flick that nails the art of scaring and startling, and shows us how haunting a jump scare can be if done right: Demián Rugna's brutal and unforgiving 2017 horror film Terrified.

‘Dicks: The Musical’ Joins Festival Fare ‘She Came To Me’, ‘The Royal Hotel’, ‘Strange Way Of Life’ & More In Lively Indie Weekend – Specialty Preview
Image
A wacky film based on a stage show by comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, Dicks: The Musical – a riff on The Parent Trap with two adult men as the starring twins — opens in seven theaters in NY, LA and San Francisco on a crowded specialty weekend as theatrical releases of fall film festival titles accelerates.

Dicks, from A24, developed by Chernin Entertainment, is, according to press notes, a first “adult musical comedy” for both. (It’s Chernin’s second musical after hit The Greatest Showman.) Directed by Larry Charles, it stars the two creators Jackson and Sharp as self-obsessed businessmen who discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents. They’re joined by an A-list roster of Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Bowen Yang and Megan Thee Stallion.

When Evil Lurks Review
Image
Evil does a lot more than lurk in Argentinean writer-director Demián Rugna's intense and terrifying horror film When Evil Lurks. Demonic possession is a constant background threat in When Evil Lurks, set in what appears to be a world where such occurrences are commonly accepted as an everyday risk. Rugna drops the audience in the middle of that world without explanation, and his matter-of-fact approach to the subject amplifies the horror. Gruesome acts of violence often arise without warning for both the characters and the audience. Rugna keeps viewers on edge from the moment When Evil Lurks begins until the final shot.

That beginning offers only a moment of tranquility for brothers Pedro (Ezequiel Rodriguez) and Jimmy (Demián Salomon), who live together on a farm in rural Argentina. One night, they hear shots fired nearby, possibly on the land of their neighbor Ruiz (Luis Ziembrowski). The next day, they...

‘When Evil Lurks’ Review: Demonic Doings Spread Like Wildfire in an Unpredictable Thriller
Image
The other demonic possession movie opening this week, “When Evil Lurks” is unlikely to steal major box-office thunder from “The Exorcist: Believer.” But Argentine genre specialist Demian Rugna’s latest is no mere opportunistic cash-in, either, with its own distinctive and non-formulaic take on the notion of an evil spirit that strikes like a malignant disease. IFC Films is releasing this uneven but engrossing, sometimes startling horror thriller to several hundred U.S. theaters on October 6. Shudder’s first Spanish-language original production begins streaming on that platform October 27.

Rugna had an international breakout five years ago with his third feature “Terrified” (aka “Aterrados”), about a fantastical, lethal infestation in a couple of middle-class Buenos Aires households. A Guillermo del Toro-produced English-language remake was announced, as well as “Terrified 2,” though neither has yet come to pass. Instead, we have this new “contagion” thriller, which trades its predecessor’s supposedly scientifically-explicable menace for a supernatural one,...

‘When Evil Lurks’ – Demián Rugna Makes Movies for Horror Fans, Not for the Wider Audience [Interview]
Image
Writer/Director Demián Rugna broke onto the horror scene with 2017’s aptly titled Terrified (Aterrados), a paranormal tour de force of shocking imagery and genuine scares. Rugna shifts from ghosts to demonic possession for his latest, When Evil Lurks, breaking all the rules along the way.

Shudder and IFC Films will be presenting When Evil Lurks in theaters on October 6, followed by the film’s Shudder premiere on October 27.

In the film, “a pair of brothers find a mutilated corpse near their property and convene with the locals to suss it out. They soon learn that the odd happenings in their village are the cause of a spirit that’s found its way into a local man waiting for the proper protocols to rid his body of the festering demon. An escape attempt ensues as the film keeps its protagonists on edge, racing against imminent danger to shake the spirit’s relentless clutches.
