    One Boring Night in October...

Right, well when I sat down to watch the 2017 movie "One Night in October", I was actually thinking that I was sitting down to watch a horror movie.

But as it turned out, then writer and director Christopher M. Carter delivered a script and a storyline that proved sluggish, boring and uneventful. And as for it being a horror movie, well that might be stretching it a bit, unless you're brand new to the horror genre. I zoned out pretty early on in the movie because the character gallery had the appeal of cardboard cut-outs, and the storyline had the appeal of wet paint. There was nothing worthwhile or particularly entertaining to be found in the narrative. And that made for a very, very boring movie to sit through.

Of course I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie, but I can't claim that I was particularly impressed with what I witnessed. Sure, the acting performances weren't among the worst of acting performances I've seen in my many years of watching movies, but there was nothing noteworthy to be seen on the screen.

Visually then you're not in for anything grand. So there was nothing to write home about here.

Would I recommend you to sit down and literally waste 104 minutes on watching "One Night in October", no I wouldn't. Not even if you are a newcomer to the horror genre. There are far better gateway horror movies out there.

My rating of writer and director Christopher M. Carter's 2017 movie "One Night in October" lands on a generous two out of ten stars.

My Review Of "One Night In October"

"One Night In October" may forego the traditional anthology format, instead choosing to expose different people's lives as they deal with specific horrors on a single night. The concept may not be original but it is clever in that I can't recall too many films in the horror genre that have done this. Usually this is a style utilized in pulp film and rom-coms. And even with a low budget and basic storytelling, Carter is able to capture the feeling that this all connected to this single night.

The acting isn't great, it is obvious this is a new experience for a lot of the cast. At times the lines are more recited than delivered, and many characters feel "acted out" in more of a workshop manner. Still enough is present to create entertaining characters and bring some life to the story. I have seen these tropes many times but I still enjoyed seeing them again. Plus I liked the turn each took towards the end.

The horror elements are on the cheaper end, which is expected given the limited budget. Still I always applaud practical effects used proficiently. There is death, blood splatter. A definite body count. For the most part it all works well enough to create a horror celebration. The sound effects and music score is iffy but the cinematography is done good enough to give the film decent atmosphere.

Overall "One Night In October" will appeal to a select indie fan base that enjoys the low budget, homemade subgenre. It could have been tweeked a bit but I still found it entertaining. There is a Samhain slasher ritual that reminded me of "Rites Of Spring", a home invasion where the tables are turned and a demoness (succubus I think) with man troubles all on Halloween.

    Why, just why?

I love a good horror movie. With October here, I love to watch a good scary movie. I have been exploring some newer movies. Today I picked this flick "One Night in October". Well, it was just awful.

It was the more than one story format that flipped from one story to the next. I had to use a note pad to remember who was in what storyline. As far as it being scary, um no. Gory? No, not really. Acting? Um, not really. I think these people were just doing a class project and decide to act out a play. The storylines were stupid and did not flow well. I was hopeful when I saw the corn stalks, but even then it fell short of a good movie. Save yourself some time and put in a classic. This should be a blopper real for a Progressive commerical.
