Considering the way he treated his “girlfriend” in South Africa, Lucy should count her blessings.

Is The Exorcism of Emily Rose a True Story? Jennifer Carpenter’s 20-Year-Old Horror Movie, Explained
Image
There’s always something extra creepy about horror movies that claim to be “based on a true story”. And that’s what made the 20-year-old movie, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, so chilling. Released in 2005, starring Jennifer Carpenter, the movie opened with the same message, suggesting that it’s inspired by a real case from the 1970s.

Although it was loosely based on the possession of Anneliese Michel and the trials of her parents in the aftermath of her demise, not every scene matched what truly happened. Some of the scenes were added just for commercial purposes. Yet, the fact that it draws from real-life events made it all the more disturbing.

Unlike the 2022 Taiwanese movie, Incantation, where the filmmaker openly admitted that the “based on real events” warning was added just to make the film more spooky for the audience, The Exorcism of Emily Rose does no such shenanigans.

Freakier Friday Borrows One Of Netflix's Best Rom-Com Stars For A Fun Supporting Role
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Freakier Friday."

While rom-coms have been enjoying a remarkable resurgence on streaming lately, they've only barely started returning to theaters after years of being seemingly banished to your living room only. Jodie Foster's $223M Thriller Flightplan Soars on Netflix 20 Years Later
Image
Jodie Foster's psychological thriller is a Netflix streaming hit 20 years after release, when it grossed $223 million at the worldwide box office.

Foster won an Oscar for the 1988 legal drama The Accused, then won a second for 1991’s psychological horror thriller Silence of the Lambs. The star followed up those twin triumphs by spending the 1990s taking multiple different genres for a spin.

There was the costume drama Sommersby, teaming Foster with Richard Gere. She did Western-comedy alongside Mel Gibson in Maverick, then played a scientist in the sci-fi drama Contact. She wound up the decade in another costume film, playing one of the two title characters in Anna and the King of Siam.

Foster’s 1990s genre tour interestingly saw her avoiding thrillers, perhaps because she was hesitant to play another character similar to Lambs’ Clarice Starling. But her thriller-aversion went away in 2002, when she took the lead in David Fincher’s Panic Room,...

Freakier Friday
Image
As a sweet and silly teen comedy with a big heart and outrageously good original songs, Freaky Friday has endured over decades. Its special sauce came courtesy of a then-teenage Lindsay Lohan and parental Jamie Lee Curtis, whose combined chemistry and knack for physical comedy worked wonders for the film’s body-swapping premise. It was a sparky partnership that welcomed a reunion, albeit under just the right circumstances.

Set in the modern day, Freakier Friday has the advantage of being set some 20 years after its predecessor, when a new generation has arrived at teenagedom. As we learn via a scrapbook-style montage, that new generation is represented by Harper (Julia Butters), the surfing, beanie-sporting daughter of Lohan’s single parent Anna. It’s a fun set-up that allows for Curtis’ cool therapist grandma, Tess, to inevitably overstep boundaries as she bonds with Harper at Anna’s behest. Their wonky dynamic, which...

Image
Liam Neeson, best known for his dramatic and action roles, is currently earning rave reviews for his turn as the bumbling L.A. detective Frank Drebin Jr. in The Naked Gun. Canadian Genre Filmmaking Sharpens its Edge, Cutting Deep Across Programming Strands at Fantasia’s 29th Edition
Image
While the oeuvre of Toronto director David Cronenberg, the maestro of body horror, has inspired generations of Canadian filmmakers (including his progeny) and continues to do, Montreal’s Fantasia Festival and its Frontières Market event put them face-to-face with the global genre community – not to mention rabid local audiences – in a red-carpet-free cinema hotzone.

10 years in the making, Félix Dufour-Laperrière’s “Death Does Not Exist” (“La mort n’existe pas”), his third animated film and the only Canadian feature to world-premiere at Cannes this year, receives its North American and local premiere July 17.

Dufour-Laperrière has made all his animated films with the same small team out of the Montreal studio he runs with his brother Nicolas. “We’re coming from the Quebec film scene, which has a strong relationship with documentary, animation, alternative fiction, alternative means of production,” he told Variety.

“The subject matter [of ‘Death Does Not Exist’] might be difficult, but it is made with total honesty,...

'Fantastic Four: First Steps' Julia Garner Addresses Silver Surfer Genderswap
Image
Julia Garner is surfing cosmic waves and heralding the arrival of Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds, in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Garner takes up the mantle of the beloved comic book character known as the Silver Surfer, who is appearing in the MCU for the first time on the big screen. However, there was an inexplicably negative reaction to the idea that Garner might be portraying a "genderswapped" version of Norrin Radd, a.k.a. the Silver Surfer, who first appeared in the pages of Fantastic Four No. 48 (1965). The actress didn’t pay the critics any attention, though, and Garner explained how she dealt with the backlash while appearing on the red carpet for First Steps’ London premiere by saying:

"I was like, 'I'm just going to still do my job.' And also, it's Shalla-Bal, so it’s different […] I was just happy that people are resonating with it,...

Anna by Mia Oberländer
Image
Books that are obvious metaphors can be tricky. Especially if you’re not quite sure exactly what they’re a metaphor for.

I think Anna is Mia Oberländer’s first major graphic novel – it says it was created as part of her thesis in illustration at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences – so I don’t have any prior work to check, to see what her usual method of working is.

In the German mountain town of Bad Hohenheim, we see three generations of women, all named Anna. Perhaps for clarity, the grandmother is Anna1, her daughter Anna2, and our blonde narrator Anna3. And we immediately think that this will not be a naturalistic,...

I Can’t Watch Julia Garner’s Netflix Series Without Thinking Of That Jennifer Lopez Film
Image
Watching Julia Garner’s Inventing Anna (2022) on Netflix, it is hard not to think of Jennifer Lopez’s Hustlers (2019). Both based on true stories and sharing themes, the series and the film also share a connection that many people are unaware of.

Both projects are actually rooted in journalist Jessica Pressler’s work, sharing stories of deception and ambition. Pressler, a longtime New York magazine journalist, covered both stories extensively, leading to both of her articles later being adapted into Hollywood projects.

The Jessica Pressler Connection: From Hustlers to Inventing Anna Hustlers | Credits: STX Entertainment

Jessica Pressler, a contributing editor at New York magazine, is the journalist who penned two articles that birthed both Jennifer Lopez‘s Hustlers and Julia Garner‘s Netflix series, Inventing Anna.

Her 2015 piece, The Hustlers at Scores, detailed how a crew of strippers in New York City schemed to drug and rob high-end clients, running up their credit cards.

‘Gh’ Spoilers Wednesday, June 25: Parental Talks, Following Orders, Bad News!
Image
General Hospital spoilers and updates for Wednesday, June 25 tease parental talks, following orders, and bad news!

Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna) and Brook Lynn Quartermaine Chase (Amanda Setton) have a parental talk, Cody Bell (Josh Kelly) follows orders, and Martin Grey (Michael E. Knight) gets bad news.

Parental Talks

Brook Lynn and Dante finally talk, and they discuss their grown son Gio Palmieri (Giovanni Mazza).

Gio’s not been buying what either one of them have been selling about relationships with them, he’s pretty much cut everyone off. Dante tells Brook Lynn to reach Gio, he and she are going to have to work together.

That will be easier said then done, because Gio has obviously inherited Dante’s temper and both his and Brook Lynn’s stubbornness!

At least Dante has realized he has to lay aside his anger at Brook Lynn for not telling him they had a son years ago.

Jennifer Blasts Chad While Kate Vows Revenge on the June 6 Days
Image
Oh, Jennifer was mad as heck in the Friday, June 6 episode of Days of Our Lives. Her targets: Cat and, to a lesser extent, Chad. Also, Kate vowed to get revenge on Xander for what he did to Philip. Sophia, Tate, and Mrs. Choi took a tour of the labor & delivery set-up at the hospital. And Anna returned for John’s funeral. She reunited with Marlena and Carrie.

Jennifer’s Wrath

Since Jennifer (Melissa Reeves) and Jack (Matthew Ashford) haven’t been in Salem, Jennifer hasn’t had the chance to work out her anger issues over Cat (AnnaLynne McCord), the impostor. She pretended to be Abigail, and while she had reasons for what she did, that didn’t stop the pain from overwhelming Chad (Billy Flynn), Jack, Jennifer, and the rest of Salem, who believed Cat was Abby.
