While the oeuvre of Toronto director David Cronenberg, the maestro of body horror, has inspired generations of Canadian filmmakers (including his progeny) and continues to do, Montreal’s Fantasia Festival and its Frontières Market event put them face-to-face with the global genre community – not to mention rabid local audiences – in a red-carpet-free cinema hotzone.
10 years in the making, Félix Dufour-Laperrière’s “Death Does Not Exist” (“La mort n’existe pas”), his third animated film and the only Canadian feature to world-premiere at Cannes this year, receives its North American and local premiere July 17.
Dufour-Laperrière has made all his animated films with the same small team out of the Montreal studio he runs with his brother Nicolas. “We’re coming from the Quebec film scene, which has a strong relationship with documentary, animation, alternative fiction, alternative means of production,” he told Variety.

Julia Garner is surfing cosmic waves and heralding the arrival of Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds, in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Garner takes up the mantle of the beloved comic book character known as the Silver Surfer, who is appearing in the MCU for the first time on the big screen. However, there was an inexplicably negative reaction to the idea that Garner might be portraying a "genderswapped" version of Norrin Radd, a.k.a. the Silver Surfer, who first appeared in the pages of Fantastic Four No. 48 (1965). The actress didn’t pay the critics any attention, though, and Garner explained how she dealt with the backlash while appearing on the red carpet for First Steps’ London premiere by saying:
"I was like, 'I'm just going to still do my job.' And also, it's Shalla-Bal, so it’s different […] I was just happy that people are resonating with it,...

Books that are obvious metaphors can be tricky. Especially if you’re not quite sure exactly what they’re a metaphor for.
I think Anna is Mia Oberländer’s first major graphic novel – it says it was created as part of her thesis in illustration at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences – so I don’t have any prior work to check, to see what her usual method of working is.
In the German mountain town of Bad Hohenheim, we see three generations of women, all named Anna. Perhaps for clarity, the grandmother is Anna1, her daughter Anna2, and our blonde narrator Anna3. And we immediately think that this will not be a naturalistic, straightforward story.
Anna2, and eventually Anna3, are exceptionally tall. Extraordinarily tall, strikingly tall, unusually tall, remarkably tall, uncomfortably tall. They have gangly super-long legs and torsos maybe a bit longer than normal. They tower over all...

Watching Julia Garner’s Inventing Anna (2022) on Netflix, it is hard not to think of Jennifer Lopez’s Hustlers (2019). Both based on true stories and sharing themes, the series and the film also share a connection that many people are unaware of.
Both projects are actually rooted in journalist Jessica Pressler’s work, sharing stories of deception and ambition. Pressler, a longtime New York magazine journalist, covered both stories extensively, leading to both of her articles later being adapted into Hollywood projects.

Jessica Pressler, a contributing editor at New York magazine, is the journalist who penned two articles that birthed both Jennifer Lopez‘s Hustlers and Julia Garner‘s Netflix series, Inventing Anna.
Her 2015 piece, The Hustlers at Scores, detailed how a crew of strippers in New York City schemed to drug and rob high-end clients, running up their credit cards.

General Hospital spoilers and updates for Wednesday, June 25 tease parental talks, following orders, and bad news!
Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna) and Brook Lynn Quartermaine Chase (Amanda Setton) have a parental talk, Cody Bell (Josh Kelly) follows orders, and Martin Grey (Michael E. Knight) gets bad news.
Parental Talks
Brook Lynn and Dante finally talk, and they discuss their grown son Gio Palmieri (Giovanni Mazza).
Gio’s not been buying what either one of them have been selling about relationships with them, he’s pretty much cut everyone off. Dante tells Brook Lynn to reach Gio, he and she are going to have to work together.
That will be easier said then done, because Gio has obviously inherited Dante’s temper and both his and Brook Lynn’s stubbornness!
At least Dante has realized he has to lay aside his anger at Brook Lynn for not telling him they had a son years ago.

While current topics tend to occupy our attention and drain the creative juices of the filmmakers trying to stay on top of the trends, others, more universal ones, often get neglected for a period of time. Sometimes, only sometimes, the most authentic and universal things remain hidden in plain sight, often behind a generic title. Both of the claims from previous sentences stand firmly in the only Israeli-led co-production at this year’s Cannes, Mama, which premiered in Cannes Special programme.
For her first fiction feature, Or Sinai reunites with Evgenia Dodina, the lead actress of her award-winning short Anna (2015). Dodina steps in the titular role of Mila, the main breadwinner for her Polish family. We meet her in Israel, where she works for a wealthy couple, Yaffa (Cheli Goldenberg) and Gideon (Meir Swisa), as a housekeeper. At the moment, she is also having a clumsy, but gentle fling with.

Anna Kendrick has played many iconic characters over the years. From starring in the Pitch Perfect films to working alongside Blake Lively in A Simple Favor and most recently starring in the critically acclaimed masterpiece that was Woman of the Hour, she has done it all. While all of these roles have gotten her great fame and acclaim, they cannot top the iconic impact that she had in The Twilight Saga.
Embodying the awkwardness of the franchise as a whole, her acting was something else entirely in these films. Jessica Stanley’s character stands as one of the most memorable characters from the series, and the reasons are endless. While on the surface, she is meant to be a traditional “mean girl’, Kendrick’s acting turned her into something so much more.
However, it would seem that the original intention of her character wasn’t to make her this complicatedly funny.

Lera Abova made quite a buzz when her role in the One Piece live-action was announced. The news spotlighted her previous roles in various films and showcased her diversity as an actor. From Anna to Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin, she has dabbled in various genres of movies.
Other than that, Abova has modelled for Gucci, Ysl, Dior, Chanel, and Prada. She is a multitalented artist. When it comes to acting, though, it seems she has luck on her side. Her recent thriller movie Extraterritorial has topped the charts, but hold up! It dethroned a movie starring a top-shelf actor.
Tom Hardy’s Havoc was surpassed by the thriller movie, and it is an impressive feat. The trailer seemed so promising, and so did Abova’s acting, which makes one thing certain. Her role in the upcoming One Piece live-action is highly favorable for the franchise, and here’s why.

Kjersti Flaa earlier shared in a video about an interview with Blake Lively, claiming that it almost made her quit her job. Flaa has since doubled down on her take about the star, almost making it her mission to expose Lively. During her most recent video, Flaa tried to prove that Lively allegedly took over the creative in her recent film, Another Simple Favor.
Flaa brought with her a THR interview with the film’s co-writer Jessica Sharzer, which allegedly proved that Lively had more creative powers. Flaa pointed out how Sharzer unintentionally revealed how much influence the It Ends With Us star had on the set of the Paul Feig film.

The Fantastic Four are finally making their MCU debut in a manner befitting their comic royalty status. The ‘60s set film will revive the Silver Surfer, this time played by Emmy award-winning actor, Julia Garner. Her casting as the Galactus herald caused many to question the role, including Garner. She spoke toEntertainment Weekly about how the role came about for her.
“I knew the basics of certain comic book characters, [and that] there was the Marvel world and the DC world, and they're very different. I knew about some of the famous comic book characters, some of them I didn't know. So when I got presented with this opportunity, I was like, 'Wait, what? Me?' In the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps, some fans have assumed that Marvel Studios has decided to take creative license by casting acclaimed actress Julia Garner as a female Silver Surfer (Shalla-Bal) versus the male Silver Surfer (Norrin Radd). In the Marvel comics' prime timeline, Norrin Radd is Shalla-Bal’s love interest, who becomes the Silver Surfer as the herald of Galactus - in a selfless act to save his home world, Zenn-la. However, there has been Marvel Comics source material to affirm that Shalla-Bal has become the Silver Surfer, while facing similar dire consequences.
Reimaging the role of Silver Surfer with Garner should bring a fresh take on a classic Marvel character created by writer/artist Jack Kirby and further developed by Stan Lee. There have been previous comic book interpretations of Shalla-Bal becoming Silver Surfer in an alternate timeline in the Marvel Comic “Earth X” issue #12 (2000). Despite...

Netflix horror fans are in for a cruel twist this April. The clock is ticking, and some spine-chilling fan favorites are vanishing from the platform faster than you can say “Ghostface.”
At the top of the Netflix chopping block lies Scream (2022), a slick, blood-soaked reboot-meets-sequel that carved its way back into the genre with a vengeance but come April 11, it’s saying its final goodbye.
Horror Titles on the Chopping Block
Directed by Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, the minds behind Ready or Not and V/H/S, this modern Scream ushered in a fresh generation of scream queens and suspects, while still tipping the mask to the franchise’s origins.

Netflix Threads Remake Poster (Photo Credit – Instagram)
The creative minds behind Adolescence, Netflix’s chilling sensation that shot straight into the platform’s top ten most-watched English-language series, are diving back into the shadows, and this time, they’re pulling one of the most haunting tales in cinematic history into the modern spotlight.

Warp Films, the same production powerhouse behind Adolescence, has now announced their boldest move yet – reimagining Threads, the grim 1984 nuclear war film so psychologically jarring that it’s barely seen airtime in the last four decades.

Will The Events Of Daredevil: Born Again Impact Spider-Man 4? ( Photo Credit – YouTube; Instagram )
It looks like Marvel’s cooking up a crossover stew and the seasoning with Daredevil: Born Again. While fans were busy theorizing about Devil’s Reign and dreaming of gritty rooftop battles, Born Again might’ve sneakily planted the perfect setup for Spider-Man 4, and it’s not what anyone had on their bingo card.
With Wilson Fisk now flexing his political muscles as Mayor of NYC, things are about to get delightfully messy for our friendly neighborhood boy, Peter Parker. Forget space aliens and multiverse mayhem. This next Spider-Man flick swings back down to the street level, where the villains wear suits, and the chaos is disturbingly legal.
And let’s not ignore that this is the first film in Spidey’s new trilogy, dropping just two months after Avengers: Doomsday. So while everyone else...

Léon: The Professionalstar Gary Oldman reveals that his iconic "Everyone!" line delivery was never intended to make the final cut of the movie. Released in 1994, director Luc Besson's action thriller stars Jean Reno as Léon, an assassin who takes the 12-year-old Mathilda (Natalie Portman) under his wing after her family is murdered. Oldman plays Léon: The Professional's main villain, Stansfield, a corrupt and violent DEA agent. One of the most iconic lines of Oldman's career comes when he demands that a subordinate bring him "everyone" as backup before he then repeats the word in an exaggerated yell.
During a recent interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Oldman reveals that his shouting delivery of the word "everyone" was actually intended as a joke for Besson. The actor recalls wanting to make the director laugh on one particular take, but then the moment ended up in the final cut of the movie.

Seven Little Johnstons fans are not enjoying Season 15 because Anna Johnston is being pushed aside by the family and she’s getting dissed on social media. Emma Johnston seems to think she’s at a “Mean Girls’ convention,” one social media commenter suggested on March 13.
The Ugly Side Of Reality TV
Emma Johnston has been very vocal about her sister, and this week, she and her brother Alex went live. According to her, the estrangement is all Anna Johnston’s fault because of her boyfriend. Then again, she also claimed that she’d never met him. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that drama would come with him, and TLC fans called it long ago because he’s a person of color.
Allegedly, the 7 Little Johnstons’ family is dealing with Anna’s boyfriend through tough love as rumors spread that the boyfriend might be abusive. However, many...

Netflix’s Colombian crime drama, Medusa, focuses on the dastardly shenanigans of Barranquilla city’s most influential, powerful aristocrats, the Hidalgo family—and if the reference to the mythological figure in the title wasn’t indicative enough, the family in question is indeed comparable to the Greek pantheon of gods when it comes to hiding heinous, despicable secrets. With the exception of Maya and possibly Esperanza Hidalgo, every single character in the series is presented as a twisted, wicked individual with a broken moral compass who can go to any length to survive in the power struggle or get what they want. The characterization, despite being somewhat stereotyped, allows scope for discussion regarding emotional tribulations, redemption, and second chances.
