Few North American film markets have taken place amid such tumult as this year’s virtual AFM. If it’s not the deadly pandemic, it’s the excruciatingly tense U.S election and its fallout.
Will the industry be able to pull itself away from CNN for a minute to focus on the event? “Last week it was very challenging to focus on AFM projects,” said one market regular. “Hopefully, the election will become background noise. Market attendees are like professional athletes: extremely focused on the prize. None of us can afford to be too distracted.”
“I don’t think it will factor too much into business,” said another LA-based exec. “It’ll be a talking point on every zoom call but I think people are worn out and will welcome being able to focus on something else.”
The pandemic is the outside force having the biggest impact on the film business.

The director begins filming his second feature, the bloody journey of a Brussels subway driver, starring Antonio de la Torre and Marine Vacth. Last week began the shoot of the new film from Giordano Gederlini, screenwriter on Ladj Ly’s recent film Les Misérables, winner of the Jury Prize in Cannes and of the César award for Best Film, but also on Olivier Masset-Depasse’s Mothers’ Instinct, Best Film and Best Screenplay winner at the latest Magritte Awards, and on Above the Law by François Troukens and Jean-François Hensgens. Giordano Gederlini presents Entre la vie et la mort as a urban and contemporary thriller, with Brussels one of its characters, powerful and organic. The film follows the journey of Leo Castaneda. Leo is a Spanish man living in Brussels, where he drives the subway trains of line 6. One evening, he locks eyes with a young man standing on the platform.

Olivier Masset-Depasse’s most recent film Mothers’ Instinct is to be the subject of an American remake, also intitled Mothers’ Instinct, which is set to be directed by the Belgian filmmaker himself. Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain will be the movie’s two heroines, with the latter co-producing the film via her production company Freckle Films. Selected for the Toronto International Film Festival in the autumn of 2018, the film made a strong impression on Jessica Chastain’s agent, who immediately recommended it to the actress. Indeed, aside from the film’s aesthetic prowess, it also portrays two strong and memorable heroines, housewives caught in the chains of domesticity who slowly drift towards madness in a residential 1960s suburb. The actress was quick to voice her interest,...

Delphine Girard’s 16-minute Belgian thriller “A Sister” gave this year’s MyFrenchFilmFestival (Mfff) shorts competition a shot in the arm earlier this week, when the film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Live Action Short Film.
Shot from the backseat of an unnerving rural car ride and across the desks of an emergency call center, “A Sister” unravels for its viewers as it does for the protagonist, a late-night operator who gets what initially seems a mistaken call. On the other end is a shaky-voiced woman having half a conversation that doesn’t make much sense until small clues in her dialogue make it clear she’s in an unsafe situation, but unable to talk about it.
Despite the film’s positive critical reception and high scores across online aggregating sites, its modest festival run and lack of major competition appearances at events like Clermont-Ferrand or Cannes – common...
