Vértice 360, one of Spain’s top indie production-distribution companies, is expanding operations to Latin America, Italy and Portugal, as fruit of its ambitious plan to become a reference on the international film distribution scene.

Part of the Squirrel Media group, the Madrid-based distributor is backing a first stage of its international expansion with the investment of more than 100 million in film content for distribution in the 35 territories where it already operates.

At the current Cannes Film Market, Vértice is looking for movie deals to expand its international line up.

The distributor mainly looks for blockbusters going out to independent industry and prestige projects which are liable to win international awards, but also local productions in both Spanish and English.

Vértice has already established business relationships with top independent content providers such as Millennium Media, FilmNation, A24, Studiocanal and Pathé.

Neon, the Oscar-winning studio behind “Parasite,” has acquired U.S. rights to “Mothers’ Instinct,” a psychological thriller starring Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway. It’s a pretty acclaimed group. Both actresses have Oscars of their own — Hathaway won her’s for “Les Miserables” and Chastain is a newly minted victor for her performance in last year’s “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.”

“Mothers,” which is fully financed by Anton, is a remake of the 2018 critically acclaimed Belgium film “Duelles” by director Olivier Masset-Depasse. It will begin principal photography on May 25. The project has been in the works for some time. Sales were originally launched at AFM in 2020.

Masset-Depasse will direct the English-language remake of his film. Hathaway and Chastain will serve as producers on the film. Chastain’s partner Kelly Carmichael will also produce under the pair’s Freckle Films banner.

Neon has acquired US rights to pscyhological thriller Mother’s Instict starring Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway.

The film will be a remake of the Belgium feature Duelles by Olivier Masset-Depasse which won a record-breaking nine Magritte awards from the Belgian Academy in 2020 including best film and best director.

Masset-Depasse will also direct this English-language remake. Principal photography begins May 25 in the US.

Set in the early 1960s, Chastain and Hathaway play best friends and neighbours who live a traditional idyllic lifestyle, both with successful husbands and sons of the same age.

London-based financier Anton has boarded “No Place Like Kill,” an action-packed crime thriller from Mat Newman with Sam Riley and Charles Dance attached to star. The film will be presented to international buyers by Anton at the Virtual Cannes Film Market later this month.

Set to start shooting at the end of the year in the U.K., “No Place Like Kill” will mark the directorial debut of Newman, a well-established editor who has worked with Nicolas Winding Refn on “Drive” and “Only God Forgives,” as well as Stefano Sollima’s “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” and “Without Remorse.”
