Notable film critic Roger Ebert hated Jim Carrey for his role in the 1996 film The Cable Guy, but Robin Williams was quick to defend the star in public. Finding worldwide fame with notable roles such as Ace Ventura and The Mask, Jim Carrey was on a roll when he hit his first major bump.
The Cable Guy, directed by Ben Stiller, was a disaster since it showcased Carrey in a serious and creepy role. Carrey’s character became obsessed with one particular customer, and the film’s unsettling tones felt like dark comedy rather than the slapstick one that Carrey was known for.
Roger Ebert even called out Jim Carrey for his performance and called it “creepy” and “bizarre” (via YouTube). The public had turned against Jim Carrey for having a stain on his legacy after a successful start. That’s when Robin Williams defended the star (via The Calgary...

Long before he was orchestrating Florence Pugh’s death-defying stunts for Marvel in Thunderbolts*, Jake Schreier was a commercial director with dreams of making the leap to the big screen.
He took a stroll down memory lane in Malta on Tuesday morning during a masterclass appearance at the Mediterrane Film Festival to recall how he made the difficult transition to feature films, and, in the process, he dished out some advice to aspiring auteurs in the audience.
The wide-ranging conversation — hosted at Malta’s historic Fort Ricasoli just steps away from where films like Gladiator and its sequel were shot — was moderated by filmmaker Joshua Cassar Gaspar, whose film The Theft of the Caravaggio is screening in competition at the fest. The 75-minute chat covered nearly all aspects of filmmaking as Schreier got quizzed on stunts (yes, that one), camera angles, visual effects, color grading, music selections, sound design, post-production,...

Starz has opened writers rooms for Kingmaker, set in the world of the DC Black political elite, from Al Letson and Theo Travers; Masquerade, a female-driven thriller set in Venice, from Dave Holstein; and British boxing drama Fightland, from Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s G-Unit Film & Television, which had been in development at the network since 2022.
Additionally, Plan B has come on board to produce All Fours, a series in development based on Miranda July’s buzzy novel about a woman’s journey of self-discovery and sexual awakening, which Starz acquired earlier this year.
Starz CEO Jeff Hirsch had signaled to Wall Street that standalone Starz plans to own a lot of its programming, outright or through co-productions with other studios.

Jake Schreier’s winding path to Thunderbolts* feels oddly preordained considering his two roommates at NYU, Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, are also MCU alums.
In 2012, the Berkeley native kicked off his feature directorial career with the Ford-written Sundance darling, Robot & Frank, before making the jump to the low-key studio hit, Paper Towns (2015). In between it all, he became a prolific television and music video director, helming idiosyncratic series like Kidding and Lodge 49, as well as inventive videos for artists such as Haim, Kendrick Lamar and Benny Blanco.
In 2023, he served as an EP and in-house director on Lee Sung Jin’s (aka Sonny Lee) Beef, which would later win them both an Emmy for outstanding limited or anthology series. The Steven Yeun and Ali Wong-led feud narrative brilliantly balanced dark drama and comedy, while poignantly tracking the internal struggle of each main character. Schreier starting...

The marketing for Thunderbolts* gave the impression that it's an independent production, unique from previous Marvel releases. Director Jake Schreier said that's partly true, but there's no mistaking it's very much an MCU project.
Thunderbolts* might seem like a large-scale production per the trailers, but director Jack Schreier said the film is, at its core, a story about misfits. Speaking with Radio Times, he explained why Marvel Studios hired him for the project: his knack for character-driven stories. He still clarified that Thunderbolts* is not an indie movie. The "A24 trailer" suggested otherwise, and lead star Florence Pugh has also stated it all felt like a "badass indie". "I mean, look, I don't... we had resources for sure," Schreier asserted. "We're not an independent film. It is Marvel. I know that…we get it!"
Thunderbolts* reportedly had a $180 million production budget, which falls within the range of most MCU movies.

Pharrell Williams and Michel Gondry have scrapped their movie musical “Golden” during post-production at Universal Pictures, TheWrap has learned.
The film, directed by Gondry (“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”), will not be released in any capacity after producers and the director collectively determined the film did not live up to its intended vision.
“When all of us got into the editing room we collectively decided there wasn’t a path forward to tell the version of this story that we originally envisioned,” Williams and Gondry said in a joint statement to Variety, which first reported the news. “We appreciate all the hard work of the talented cast and crew. While we’re disappointed we can’t deliver this film, we have incredible partners at Universal and will collaborate in a different capacity again soon.”

A star-studded movie musical about the childhood of Pharrell Williams has been permanently shuttered and will not see release in any capacity, Variety can report exclusively.
The project in question is “Golden,” originally titled “Atlantis,” and was directed by Michel Gondry (“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”). It was set for wide theatrical release from Universal Pictures on May 5, though sources said that date was pushed internally last year. It boasts a heavyweight cast of chart toppers and an Oscar winner, including: Kelvin Harrison Jr., Halle Bailey, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Brian Tyree Henry, Janelle Monáe, Missy Elliott, Quinta Brunson, Anderson .Paak and Jaboukie Young-White.
Universal set up and financed the effort as part of their longstanding creative partnership with Williams (who is notably a composer and performer for the blockbuster “Despicable Me” franchise). Marvel Studios recently debuted the first trailer for upcoming Disney+ animated series, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and some new promo art has now been shared online, giving us a first look at several of the show's supporting heroes and villains.
In addition to a Matt Murdock/Daredevil - who will be voiced by Charlie Cox - the art spotlights Doctor Octopus, Doctor Strange, Scorpion, another villain we assume to be a new take on Pyro, and two mysterious female characters. There's speculation that the one on the left is Screwball, but we're not sure who the other is supposed to be.
In addition, we get another look at Spidey in his classic red and blue costume, his initial homemade outfit, and the white Future Foundation-inspired costume which is reportedly known as the Oscorp suit.

Exactly one month before it premieres on Disney+, Marvel Animation has released the first full trailer and some new key art/promo images for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
The 10-episode animated series "follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming a hero, with a journey unlike we've ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots."
The teaser mostly focuses on Peter's school-life, but we do also get to see Spidey in action, as well as a first glimpse of the wall-crawling hero in his white Future Foundation-style suit, along with Norman Osborn/The Green Goblin (who will be voiced by Colman Domingo).
The cast list also confirms that Vincent D'Onofrio will voice Wilson Fisk (Charlie Cox's Daredevil was previously announced), and Agents of Atlas character Peal Pangan/Wave (voiced by Cathy Ang) will appear. It also looks like we can expect the villainous Screwball to show up.

Jim Carrey addresses his potential return as the Grinch if a sequel to How The Grinch Stole Christmas gets made. Released in 2000 and based on the 1957 Dr. Seuss book of the same name, the Ron Howard movie follows Carrey's eponymous character as he plans to ruin Christmas for the citizens of Whoville. The movie was a box office success but The Grinch 2 never materialized, though false rumors did emerge in 2023 about a follow-up with Carrey back as The Grinch.
During a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Carrey brings up the possibility of playing the Grinch once more, revealing that he would consider returning. According to the actor, CGI and motion capture would have to be used over traditional makeup and prosthetics, which made filming the 2000 film a challenge. Check out Carrey's comment below:

For the longest time, Hollywood seemed unable to adapt popular video games into successful, widely beloved movies. It's a sad state of affairs when Paul W.S. Anderson's films "Mortal Kombat" and "Resident Evil" were once considered the pinnacle of video game movies, as both of those films are clunky and arguably mediocre. Director Uwe Boll's many video game adaptations are often called some of the worst movies ever made, and even relative hits like "Lara Croft Tomb Raider" or "Silent Hill" aren't really held up as great cinema. It wasn't until somewhat recently that audiences would exit a video game movie and think to themselves that it wasn't that bad.
The tide really turned with the release of "Sonic the Hedgehog" in 2020. After a hugely negative reaction to Sonic's animated designs in the film's previews (including his creepily realistic human teeth), Paramount spent a great deal of...

Jim Carrey said in April 2022 that he was likely retiring from acting after reprising the evil Dr. Robotnik in “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” which opened in theaters the same month. It was Carrey’s second time playing the video game villain. He first starred as Robotnik in 2020’s “Sonic the Hedgehog,” which marked Carrey first major role in a studio movie since the 2014 sequel “Dumb and Dumber To.”
“Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious,” Carrey told Access Hollywood on the “Sonic 2” press tour. “It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”

Dave Holstein created the Showtime comedy “Kidding” and was a staff writer on the network’s Emmy Award-winning series “Weeds.” But nothing in Holstein’s career compared to co-writing the sequel to “Inside Out.”
“It’s like writing inside of a dishwasher while it’s on,” Holstein tells Gold Derby. “It’s like, ‘Writing a screenplay is cool. But can you do it during the spin cycle?’ It’s just a very involved process where you are editing, shooting, and writing at the same time, all the time. You’re always iterating, you’re writing multiple versions of scenes. There are so many ideas flying around Pixar and they’re all great because there are brilliant people at Pixar, right? But your job is to make sure that all these great ideas are following the same path, and it’s your job to make sure the story stays in the center lane.

It’s giving Coen Brothers, That’s the immediate vibe of “Greedy People,” a new crime comedy from director Potsy Ponciroli (the revisionist Wester “Old Henry”) and playwright and screenwriter Michael Vukadinovich (“Kidding”). Everyone wants to be the Coens at one point in their life, and sure, it’s a big goal to aspire to, and it’s ostensibly entertaining to cast Tim Blake Nelson as a familiar yokel.

It’s a practical joke to ask a screenwriter to write about anxiety.
The very nature of the occupation is to walk around constantly asking yourself: What’s the worst thing that could possibly happen in this moment? To this character? To someone the character loves? To someone I love? To me?
But there’s a special kind of anxiety that comes with writing the sequel to a beloved film like Inside Out. Aside from the many accolades bestowed on it — it’s a perfect film with an Oscar-nominated screenplay — it’s also my personal favorite Pixar movie.
It had been a dream of mine to write at Pixar. Six years ago I had interviewed with director Dan Scanlon to write Onward, but the timing didn’t work out when Showtime greenlit my Jim Carrey-starring series Kidding. Now, here I was again, passing beneath the giant Luxo lamp, getting...

VFX artists analyze a time-freeze effect in Jim Carrey's Kidding season 1, impressed with meticulous details. Most of the scene was created without CGI, requiring the editing out of physical elements that may have made production quite costly. The show features a unique balance of tragedy and comedy, with Carrey's performance engaging viewers beyond the impressive effects.
VFX artists have examined an impressive time-freeze effect found in a scene of Jim Carrey's underseen TV show Kidding, examining how the moment was meticulously crafted. The comedy-drama follows Carry's Jeff Piccirillo - who portrays a kids TV host named Mr. Pickles - enduring the tragic loss of his son while trying to balance his work after the fact. The series was met with generally positive reviews, however it was canceled by Showtime after season 2 in 2020.

The tentpole will mark Pugh’s latest appearance as the assassin Yelena Belova, a role she debuted as in “Black Widow” and reprised on the Disney+ series “Hawkeye.” The set video includes a first look at one of Yelena’s combat-ready suits in the film. Pugh is also sporting some blue eyeliner.
“Hey guys, how are you doing? I know I’ve dropped off for a little bit, but that’s partially because I was whisked off to Atlanta to shoot a movie that I’m not really supposed to talk about,” Pugh told her followers in the video. “But I can show you things, sneakily, as long as you don’t tell anyone…I can show you a sneak peek of the set.

Michel Gondry is about to make a lot of people happy, teaming with Pharrell Williams, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and recent Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph for Atlantis, a new film that is partly inspired by Williams’ upbringing.
While no plot details have been unveiled, according to Deadline, Atlantis is “a coming-of-age musical, set in 1977 Virginia Beach, which draws inspiration from Williams’ childhood growing up in the city’s Atlantis Apartments.” In addition to Gondry signed on as director, screenwriters on board are Toy Story 4’s Martin Hynes and Tick, Tick…Boom’s Steven Levenson.
Atlantis was revealed back in 2017. While Hynes was attached even as far back as then, originally Michael Mayer – who won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for Spring Awakening – was set to direct.

Lionsgate has acquired domestic rights to the Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lily James and Himesh Patel comedy “Greedy People.”
The film explores what happens when the eccentric residents of a small, picturesque island town are faced with a sensational murder and the discovery of $1 million next to the body. This sparks a series of increasingly bad decisions that do a number on the peace and tranquility of the community.
“’Greedy People’ is a hugely entertaining crime thriller in every way,” said Allison Lynch, Lionsgate’s director of acquisitions and co-productions. “Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lily James, and Himesh Patel lead an incredible cast through twists and turns that range from the hilarious to the horrific – and the movie always keeps you guessing.”

Rapper Vince Staples plays a semi-fictionalized version of himself in “The Vince Staples Show,” debuting today on Netflix. The comedy, which skewers celebrity culture and depicts Staples’ surreal adventures, comes after roles in the films “Dope” and “White Boys Can’t Jump” and series like “Insecure” and “Abbott Elementary.”
Your character’s relationship with money is an important theme of the show. Why did you want to explore that?
It’s a big part of what we deem to be celebrity, and it’s extremely subjective. You ask a lot of people who know me personally, and I’m hyper-successful and I’ve made it to the upper echelon. But most people who live in the world don’t know who Vince Staples is. I think that’s a very interesting thing as far as how we perceive success or fame.
Many of the episodes start in reality but take surreal turns.

Showtime has swung the axe on Vanessa Bayer's I Love That For You.
The comedy has been canceled after just one season on the premium cabler.
"I Love That for You has completed its run on Showtime," the network said.
"We want to thank Vanessa, Jeremy and Jessi, along with the incredible cast and crew for their hard work and wish them the best going forward."
Inspired by Bayer's own story of overcoming childhood leukemia, the comedy centered on Joanna Gold (Bayer), who dreamed of becoming a host at a home-shopping channel.
Molly Shannon starred as Jackie, the charismatic star of the network and Joanna's idol.
Jenifer Lewis played Patricia, the network's icy, enigmatic founder and CEO.

Eliza Skinner had no idea that her Disney+ series Earth to Ned would be permanently taken off the platform until a text on the show’s writer group chat in mid-May shared an article about Disney removing more than 70 films and series from its streaming services that month. Among the disappearing titles was the comedic talk show — which launched in 2020 with Skinner as head writer — centering on an alien welcoming celebrities to his spaceship.
Due to its classification as a streaming variety series, Skinner says the writers and performers weren’t receiving residuals, although the show’s team had heard rumors blaming Disney’s tax bill. But while her loss isn’t a financial one, Earth to Ned can no longer serve as a calling card to help land future gigs for Skinner, who also doesn’t own a physical copy of the show.

One of the most delightful experiences at this year’s Cannes Film Festival was Michel Gondry’s dramatic comedy The Book of Solutions, from the Directors Fortnight sidebar. The director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Be Kind Rewind stayed away from the big screen for eight long years after the painful failure of the sloppy melodrama Mood Indigo (2013) followed with his next low budget comedy Microbe & Gasoline (2015). His only project from the past few years was an incredibly witty, heartfelt TV series called "Kidding" with Jim Carrey as Mr. Pickles, a quirky riff on Mr. Rogers. Gondry's new feature film, Le Livre des Solutions, depicts the ultimate turmoil of the moviemaking process – accumulating all of his passion, frustration & fears in a lighthearted, ironic way underlined by the usual melancholic for which he is known. // Continue Reading ›...

He’s an Oscar winner for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and beloved worldwide for his uniquely lo-fi, handmade aesthetic — a highly imaginative and visual DNA that has been liberally scattered across several decades of work, from music videos (think Daft Punk’s seminal Around the World) to commercials (such as the multi-award-winning Levi’s Drugstore), short films (including One Day, in which he’s chased out of toilet cubicle by David Cross dressed as a giant turd), documentaries (the Noam Chomsky starrer Is the Man Who Is Tall Happy?) and features (the delightful Be Kind, Rewind).
Although Michel Gondry is rarely not pouring his creativity into something (he recently turned to TV with the Jim Carrey-starring Kidding), the so-called Crown Prince of Whimsy’s feature output has been considerably less prolific of late, with his last coming in 2015 (the abundantly whimsical Microbe and Gasoline). It was only a matter of time before these words ended up in a sentence together: Kim Kardashian will be joining the 12th season of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's long-running anthology, "American Horror Story." A collaboration between the man who explores fame, camp, luxury, and what captures America's attention, and the woman who has captured America's attention better than anyone else feels so natural, that it's surprising it hasn't happened sooner.
Kardashian posted a teaser promo to her Instagram account today announcing the collaboration. In the promo, you can hear the sound of children playing along with a slow, eerie rendition of "Rock-a-bye Baby." An enigmatic, slowly revealed tagline reads: "Emma Roberts and Kim Kardashian are delicate." Roberts is an "American Horror Story" veteran who played the witch Madison Montgomery in the seasons titled "Coven" and "Apocalypse," and appeared as other characters in the anthology along the way.

As development continues on the threequel, Ben Schwartz is addressing the chances of Sonic the Hedgehog 3's Jim Carrey return. The two-time Golden Globe winner has starred in the movies based on Sega's iconic video games as Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, the mad scientist initially tasked by the government to investigate Sonic's existence on Earth, only to be revealed to be keen to use his powers to take over the world. Just prior to Sonic the Hedgehog 2's release, Carrey announced he was eyeing retirement after the sequel.
While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere of the horror-comedy Renfield, Ben Schwartz opened up about Sonic the Hedgehog 3's development. When asked whether Jim Carrey will return after previously indicating he'd be retiring, Schwartz admitted the crew are still "not sure" if the iconic actor will be back to play Doctor Eggman, though shared...

Dick Van Dyke crashed his car into a gate in Malibu after it skidded in wet weather conditions, according to reports.
The Chitty Chitty Bang Bang actor, 97, lost control of the car before smashing into a gate, leaving him with a bloody nose and possible concussion. It is understood that he did not need hospital treatment.
The accident occurred on Wednesday morning (22 March) and police officers arrived at the scene to find the star behind the wheel of his Lexus Ls 500, reports TMZ.
This is not the first time Van Dyke has been involved in an incident involving a car. In 2013, the actor escaped unhurt after his car burst into flames on a motorway.
Van Dyke was pulled from the vehicle, having not realised the Jaguar was on fire on a Los Angeles highway.
He told TMZ at the time: “It just started making a noise, and I thought I had a flat at first,...

Get ready to paint some happy little trees with Bob R -- er, Carl Nargle. The latest trailer for the upcoming Owen Wilson film "Paint" just dropped, and the new movie seems to be doing for kitschy PBS painter Bob Ross what Showtime's "Kidding" did for Mr. Rogers. Namely, "Paint" centers on the behind-the-scenes turmoil in the life of a beloved, sweet public figure who played a formative role in the lives of several generations. In this case, the subject is a Ross-like character named Carl, played by Wilson in a permed wig. Armed with a paintbrush and a dulcet voice, Carl takes the world by storm with his paint-a-long programming.
"Paint" comes via IFC Films and is the narrative feature directorial debut for Brit McAdams, who also wrote the film. "Casual" actor Michaela Watkins, "Barry" supporting player Stephen Root (who's having a big day for trailers), "The Goldbergs" star Wendi McLendon-Covey,...

Paramount Global CFO Naveen Chopra signaled during an investor conference on Feb. 28 that the entertainment giant could spend less on streaming content in 2024 than previously forecast due to the integration of Paramount+ and Showtime. He also touted the opportunity to “reinvigorate the Showtime content slate” and the Paramount studio’s “killer movie slate” this year.
Speaking at the Deutsche Bank Media, Internet and Telecom Conference in Palm Beach, Fla. in a session that was webcast, he was asked about the studio lineup for the current year. “It’s a killer slate,” he said, adding that it looked even better than the one that delivered a strong 2022, led by Top Gun: Maverick. The slate includes new Mission: Impossible, Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Paw Patrol movies, as well as Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Creatives are burning with rage over Hollywood’s hottest new trend: streaming platforms’ habit of canceling finished films and TV series before they’ve aired or pulling projects from platforms and shelving them indefinitely.
The Hollywood Reporter has been asking around about the effects of consolidation, budget cuts and tax write-offs kneecapping projects like Batgirl, Snowpiercer, Scoob!: Holiday Haunt and Westworld, among others. It’s happening all over town as entertainment companies have been forced to contend with consolidation, inflation, a possible recession and a constant chase for subscribers.
“It’s been horrifying,” prolific creator Rian Johnson (Glass Onion) tells THR. “The fact that it’s becoming common practice is terrible and adds to the awfulness. In the history of the business, there has been a constant evolution of horrible things.”
Last month, THR reported that two Netflix feature films were up for grabs after the streamer opted not to distribute the films.

Paramount Global reached more than 77 million streaming subscribers worldwide as of the end of 2022, up from 67 million as of the end of September, as Paramount+ posted a record quarterly user gain, the Hollywood giant said Thursday. However, higher streaming investments were a drag on the entertainment company’s bottom line, and TV unit advertising sales dropped.
Paramount, led by CEO Bob Bakish, reported that its Paramount+ streamer hit nearly 56 million subscribers as of the end of the year, after adding a company-record 9.9 million subs compared with the 46 million recorded as of the end of September, driven by such popular content as blockbuster movie Top Gun: Maverick.
“Subscriber growth was driven by a strong content slate, including the NFL, the expansion of existing franchises like Top Gun: Maverick and 1923, the success of new franchises like Tulsa King and Smile, as well as CBS’ overall entertainment slate,” the company said. “Internationally,...

Only 10 episodes of The Gordita Chronicles were produced before HBO Max canceled the comedy last summer amid a pullback on live-action kids and family programming. But at least creator Claudia Forestieri felt good knowing that new viewers could still find the show on the streamer.
“I got several DMs from people who saw it in-flight on American Airlines, where a few episodes are still available, and they ended up finishing the season on HBO Max,” Forestieri told Deadline.
But the consolation prize of keeping the show on the platform was short-lived: less than five months after The Gordita Chronicles was canceled, all 10 episodes were removed as part of a library purge that impacted dozens of programs on HBO Max.
At least Forestieri wasn’t alone in getting the boot. In the last few months, scores of shows have been yanked from various platforms, including Westworld, Raised By Wolves, The Time Traveler’s Wife,...
