Actor Richard Chamberlain, known in part for his starring role in the original Shogun TV series, has passed away. He was 90 years old.

Per CNN, Chamberlain's publicist, Harlan Boll, confirmed that the actor died in Hawaii due to complications following a stroke. His passing happened just one day before he would have turned 91. Chamberlain's passing was further addressed by his longtime partner, Martin Rabbett.

“Our beloved Richard is with the angels now. He is free and soaring to those loved ones before us,” Rabbett said. “How blessed were we to have known such an amazing and loving soul.”

Boll's statement confirming Chamberlain's death noted that he was born in Los Angeles, California, and grew up in Beverly Hills with his parents and brother, Bill. Before getting into his acting career, he earned a bachelor's degree in arts from Pomona College. He then pursued the United States Army, serving 16 months in...

It may be December, but luckily there’s far more than holiday horror arriving on streaming this month. In addition to a plethora of repertory titles being added across your favorite platforms, December brings a solid number of new release titles that’ll get you caught up on some 2024 horror, from huge theatrical releases to indie gems.

Consisting of five segments, Southbound (2015) is a horror anthology movie that saw direction under numerous creatives: a filmmaking collective called Radio Silence directed the first segment, and the last. Filling the void was Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner, and Patrick Horvath. And within each story, talented thespians perform to their greatest extents, emitting heartfelt screams that will echo in your head long after an initial viewing.

While there are dozens of well-known examples of filmmakers making more grounded anthology films — take Jim Jarmusch with Night on Earth (1991) and Coffee and Cigarettes (2003) — most popular projects of this ilk are categorized as horror films. Just look at Tales from the Crypt (1972) and Creepshow (1982), for instance. You've undoubtedly heard of those, if you haven't seen them outright. But the same can't be said for Southbound.

The film at hand flew drastically under the public radar upon release, and its popularity has remained rather stagnant ever since.

Exclusive: Ahead of this year’s Cannes Film Festival and market, indie distributor Good Deed Entertainment (Gde) has launched an international sales division.

Gde’s Executive Vice President of Acquisitions Erik Donley will be leading the unit, alongside Executive Vice President of Production and Distribution Andy Myers and Head of Sales Marco Disilvio.

Gde says it currently has 30 films available for worldwide distribution. In addition to selling acquired titles, the company will also work with their own original productions, via their fledgling production division led by Head of Production Phil Garrett.

First on deck is filmmaker Quinn Armstrong’s Fresh Hell film series, produced by Myers and Garrett. Fresh Hell is a three-feature film anthology series from writer-director Quinn Armstrong (Survival Skills) and will be released under Gde’s genre film label, Cranked Up Films, which has included the titles Extra Ordinary and Nightmare Cinema.

“Bloodline” and “Bosé” star Mariela Garriga has signed with CAA.

Garriga is currently in production on the latest installments of the Mission: Impossible franchise, “Dead Reckoning” parts 1 and 2, starring opposite Tom Cruise.

She previously starred in Blumhouse Productions’ “Bloodline,” opposite Seann William Scott and Dale Dickey, as well as the horror anthology “Nightmare Cinema.”

In television, Garriga can be seen as a series regular in Paramount+ limited series “Bosé.” She was also a series regular on “The Last Defectors” and had recurring roles on “NCIS: Los Angeles,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “NCIS.”

Born in Havana, Cuba, Garriga began her career at 13 as a professional dancer working in theatre and TV on the prestigious “Cuban Television Ballet.” In 2009, she relocated to Italy, where she was encouraged to pursue acting and studied at Milan’s Rodgers Acting Studio.

Not so long ago, Netflix had the reputation for saving movies and TV shows. As the biggest streamer, Netflix was able to give closure to fans of "Arrested Development," "Lucifer," "Gilmore Girls," "Designated Survivor," and even "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" when their original networks couldn't (or wouldn't) bring those shows in for a landing.

In a bid to support the fast-growing Latin American genre market, an inaugural residency for screenwriters, Residencia Fantástica, will take place in Jalisco, Mexico from Oct. 17 to 21.

LevelK’s dark comedy “Samuel’s Travels” has sold to Cranked Up Films for North America and the Caribbeans following its world premiere at Fantastic Fest.

Directed by Aik Karapetian, the Latvian-Belgian movie follows Sam, a foreigner who gets lost in the remotest part of Eastern Europe, on the edges of a mythical forest, while searching for his biological father Lagzdins. A minor road accident leads to a chance meeting with a pig-farmer’s daughter whose kind hospitality is a smoke screen to capturing him and making him a slave on the farm.

The movie, which shot mostly in English, stars a mix of established and up-and-coming actors, including Kevin Janssens (“The Ardennes”), Laura Siliņa, Juris Bartkevičs (“Three fold”) and Aigars Vilims (“Piton”). Cranks Up Films is planning to release “Samuel’s Travels” next Spring. It was produced by Gints Grūbe (“Chronicles of Melanie”) at Mistrus Media.

Hong Kong- and Paris-based All Rights Entertainment has added “The Thing Behind the Door” to its pre-Cannes and Cannes Market slate of films. The picture is a female-led French horror which is currently shooting and is to be delivered by the fourth quarter of this year.

All Rights pitches the film as a “Lovecraftian creature feature.” The story follows a young widow struggling to make ends meet as World War I rages on. Crippled by grief, feeling unable to keep going without her husband, she resorts to black magic, and is guided by an ancient manuscript. She enjoys success in reviving the dead man, but at a terrible cost.

“Thing” is the feature debut of Fabrice Blin. He is teamed up with experienced producer Fabrice Lambot, whose Phase 4 Productions is behind Monia Chokri’s new film “Babysitter.”

Just in time for Halloween, Post Mortem with Mick Garris kicks off its fifth season with special guest Joe Hill!

This past Christmas I treated myself and got a subscription to Shudder the thriller and horror streaming service. Shudder has a lot of treats to offer horror fans including the hit series Creepshow and Joe Bob Briggs Last Drive-In just to name a few. The movies Shudder has to offer range from the supernatural to the slashers. One of the selling points in getting Shudder was the movie that I’m about to review called Nightmare Cinema. I’m a huge Mick Garris fan, and when I heard about this film while listening to his podcast Post Mortem, I couldn’t wait to check it out. Nightmare Cinema was the first film I watched on Shudder. Happy Monday, guys! For today’s installment of our ongoing “From Streams to Screams” series, we’re taking a moment to celebrate one of my favorite storytelling aspects in genre cinema: anthology films. The best part about horror anthologies, to me, is the fact that they often have something in them for every type of genre fan, which means that if you’re reading this, most likely there’s going to be something in this list you’ll enjoy.

One note: Nightmare Cinema doesn’t arrive on Shudder until late October, so I didn’t include it here, but you should definitely make time for it once it debuts on their service in a few weeks.

The stories themselves have a surprisingly high hit rate, but the film is let down by its poorly thought-out linking concept. The set-up is almost too simple, taking the title entirely literally. When random people walk past the well-lit-but-seemingly-abandoned Rialto cinema, they see their name appear on the marquee. Intrigued, they enter the cinema, where a creepy projectionist (Mickey Rourke as The Projectionist) shows them a film that features their death.

Writer, producer, director and horror mega-fan Mick Garris assembles a cadre of like minds to create “Nightmare Cinema.” This anthology feature is basically a two-hour, big-screen version of the several macabre TV anthology series he’s been involved with since the mid-’80s “Amazing Stories.” Comprising five directors’ tales linked by the inimitable Mickey Rourke as a diabolical projectionist, this feature falls short of Garris’ greatest effort in that vein: His all-star 2005-07 cable pet project “Masters of Horror.” Each segment here has strengths and weaknesses. If there are no outright duds, there’s no real triumph either. But the whole is certainly diverse, lively and reference-packed enough to please horror fans attracted to this kind of enterprise, which are so often (see last year’s “Tales From the Hood 2”) so, so much worse. Cranked Up Films is releasing to 25 U.S. screens and on demand June 21.

Happy Friday, everyone! It may be hard to believe, but we have officially made it to the mid-point of the year, which means summertime is practically right around the corner. Everything kicks off in a big way on June 4th, as Jordan Peele’s Us is celebrating its digital debut alongside a slew of indie horror titles, including The Cleaning Lady, The Bastards’ Fig Tree, The Odds, and Recovery. June 7th is yet another busy day, with I Am Mother hitting Netflix and the next installment of Blumhouse’s Into the Dark Series, They Come Knocking, will be available on Hulu that day as well.

Bringing memorable horror movies from the past back to life on the big screen, Cranked Up Films and Shudder are teaming up for An Evening of Nightmares screening series. To celebrate the June 21st theatrical release of the new horror anthology Nightmare Cinema (ahead of its release later this year on Shudder), the retrospective series will kick off on Friday, June 14th with screenings of Mick Garris' Sleepwalkers, Alejandro Brugués' Juan of the Dead, and Joe Dante's Piranha, followed by Q&As with the filmmakers at Los Angeles' Dynasty Typewriter at the Hayworth Theater.

Exclusive: Five notable filmmakers from the fake-blood business have united for the horror anthology film Nightmare Cinema, which reaches theaters June 21, the same day it will be available via on-demand platforms. Now three of those same filmmakers are collaborating for a tie-in screening series that will celebrate fan-favorite horror films.

Cranked Up Films, the genre-specialized distribution arm of Good Deed Entertainment, and AMC Networks’ Shudder, the premium streaming service for horror and thrillers, are launching a curated screening series that centers on filmmakers showcasing their own work and the work of their creative influences.

The series kickoff will be June 14 at the Hayworth Theater in Los Angeles with a triple feature of films followed by stage interviews with the directors of each film. The bill will be Sleepwalkers with Mick Garris, Juan of the Dead with Alejandro Brugués, and Piranha with Joe Dante.

After Jim Jarmusch’s zombie comedy “The Dead Don’t Die” enjoys a snazzy red carpet premiere as the opening night selection of the Cannes Film Festival, its next stop will bring it to diehard genre fans. The movie will make its U.S. premiere as the opening night selection of The Overlook Festival, the New Orleans horror film festival that returns to the French Quarter for the second time on May 30.

The Focus Features release finds Jarmusch bringing his distinctive deadpan approach to supernatural circumstances for the second time, following 2013’s wistful vampire tale “Only Lovers Left Alive.” For “The Dead Don’t Die,” the auteur mainstay appears to be tipping his hat to George Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead,” with the tale of small town characters facing the sudden threat of the undead. Here’s the synopsis that was shared for it:

A series of down-on-their-luck individuals enter the decrepit and spine-chilling Rialto theater, only to have their deepest and darkest fears brought to life on the silver screen by The Projectionist – a mysterious, ghostly figure who holds the nightmarish futures of all who attend his screenings. By the time our patrons realize the truth, escape is no longer an option. For once the ticket is torn, their fate is sealed at Nightmare Cinema.

We have a brand new trailer for the upcoming horror anthology movie Nightmare Cinema. Horror history is littered with great horror anthologies, such as Creepshow, Trick 'r Treat and Tales From the Hood. This one has been making the festival rounds for a bit now and it's nearly time for the project to make its way out into the world this summer. As such, the studio has decided to drop this new trailer, which features Mickey Rourke playing host to some unsuspecting victims into this twisted world. It's a lot to process.

The trailer itself sets up the connective tissue that exists between all of these segments. Former Hollywood heavyweight and Oscar-nominee Mickey Rourke is a creepy theater projectionist who is leading these poor souls through these various horrors. We get glimpses of each segment, but not enough to really totally understand what any of them individually will consist of.
