BAFTA Award nominee Ruth Madeley (Don’t Take My Baby) is set to portray famed disability activist Judy Heumann in Apple Original Films’ Being Heumann, an adaptation of Heumann’s bestselling memoir from Coda Oscar winner Siân Heder.

Being Heumann follows Heumann as she leads over a hundred disabled people to take over the San Francisco Federal Building, kicking off a 28 day sit-in in 1977. The protestors quickly form a tightly bound community, refusing to leave until the government enforces section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, which required all federal spaces to become accessible.

Heumann used a wheelchair for most of her life after contracting polio at 18 months old. She encountered discrimination early, including being denied the right to attend public school because she was considered a “fire hazard,” and was galvanized by these experiences to get involved with the fight for disability rights. Natalie Dormer of Game of Thrones and Assaad Bouab of Call My Agent are set to star in the thriller series Minotaur, a six-part Welsh/French show created, written, and directed by Celyn Jones, who previously co-wrote and co-directed the 2022 psychological drama The Almond and the Seahorse, starring Rebel Wilson. Mad As Birds, the production company Jones runs with Sean Marley, is producing the series, and some episodes will be directed by Charles Sturridge (Marcella).

Unfortunately, it doesn’t like Minotaur will actually deal with the part man / part bull creature from Greek mythology that it gets its name from. Instead, the story follows Luc (Bouab), a cold-blooded killer who escapes Paris’s criminal underbelly for the more prosaic North Wales. There he meets Angel (Dormer) who lives in a struggling community she feels she can never belong to, raising her son Joe alone. Whilst fighting addiction, Angel gravitates towards the mysterious Luc.

First-look pictures have landed for Celyn Jones’s Madfabulous, a feature film inspired by the flamboyant life of the fifth Marquess of Anglesey, Henry Paget.

It’s set in the late 19th century and stars It’s A Sin’s Callum Scott Howells as rebellious aristocrat Paget, with Rocks star Ruby Stokes as the woman whose life is sparked by his arrival on the island.

Paget arrives from France to live at the family’s castle on the island of Anglesey in Wales, bringing his lavish and riotous lifestyle with him. Rupert Everett, Paul Rhys, Louis Hynes, Louise Brealey and Tom Rhys-Harries also star.

Earlier this year, a man best known for his acting and screenwriting – Celyn Jones – shifted into the director’s chair for the first time with the movie The Almond & The Seahorse (pictured). Actually, already, that’s not quite true. He shot that movie originally with co-director Tom Stern a couple of years back, then overhauled it in post-production. Co-starring with Rebel Wilson, the film notched up solid notices on its UK release.

Around the time of its release, Celyn Jones was talking about his next project as director, that was pretty much ready to go. That’d be Madfabulous, that he confirmed to Film Stories is now up and running in Wales.

The film is set in the 19th century, and it tells the story of the fifth Marquess of Anglesey.

Celyn Jones, co-writer of the upcoming Grange Hill movie, gives us an update on the state of the planned movie.

It’s been about a year now since we’ve had some solid information on the planned Grange Hill movie, that’s been in development for the last couple of years. Based on the iconic BBC children’s drama series, the film is being co-written by Sir Phil Redmond – who created the show – and Celyn Jones.

We learned a year or so ago that former cast member Sara Sugarman will be directing the movie, and Jones too also appeared on screen as Mr Green in the programme.

Jones has recently released his directorial debut, The Almond & The Seahorse, an absorbing drama that’s currently in cinemas. You can find out more about that, and book tickets, here.

Disney’s Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes topped the UK and Ireland box office with £3.2m, with warm weather possibly deterring cinemagoers.

The fourth instalment in the Planet Of The Apes reboot series, and the first of a planned trilogy, swung into 650 cinemas for a £4,923 location average and made £3.8m overall including previews.

Disney’s Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes leads the new titles at this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office, with the ape adventure starting in over 650 sites.

Directed by Wes Ball, Kingdom is the fourth film since the Planet Of The Apes series reboot in 2011; and 10thPlanet Of The Apes film overall since the series began with Franklin J. Schaffner’s 1968 classic starring Charlton Heston.

Set 300 years after the events of 2017’s War For The Planet Of The Apes, Kingdom sees a young chimpanzee hunter embark on a journey with a human woman, to a dangerous holdout ruled by an ambitious bonobo monarch.

Welsh actor, writer and director Celyn Jones has set “Madfabulous” as his next directorial venture.

The British indie is based on the true story of Henry Cyril Paget, fifth Marquess of Anglesey, who was once one of the richest men in Britain but died penniless and forgotten at the age of 29 in France.

“It’s full of pathos and humanity, it’s very much a character who wants to get the attention of his family who don’t want him and he keeps upping the ante with his spending, his flamboyance and his dancing,” Jones told Variety about the 1890s-set film. “What happens if you are a theatrical, and you are very gender fluid at a time when when people didn’t even know what that was? Universal’s “The Fall Guy” debuted atop the U.K. and Ireland box office with £3.5 million ($4.5 million), according to numbers from Comscore.

But the force was strong with Disney’s 25th anniversary rerelease of “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace,” as it debuted in second place with £1.1 million. This, when added to the £56.4 million grossed when it originally released in 1999, makes the film neck-and-neck with “Joker” at No. 30 on the all-time box office chart for the territory.

In its second weekend, Warner Bros.’ “Challengers,” headlined by Zendaya, moved down to third place with £986,885 for a total of £3.6 million. In fourth position, in its fourth weekend, Studiocanal’s “Back to Black” added £770,973 for a total of £10.5 million.

Rounding off the top five was Univeral’s “Kung Fu Panda 4,” which earned £562,704 in its sixth weekend for a total of £20.4 million.

Rebel Wilson says her contract for the “Pitch Perfect” franchise prevented her from losing weight.

The actress-writer-producer, who played Fat Amy in the 2012 musical comedy and its 2015 and 2017 sequels, told “Call Her Daddy” podcast host Alex Cooper that she could not lose or gain more than 10 pounds.

“I couldn’t lose a massive amount of weight, because it was in the contracts for that movie,” she said on Wednesday’s episode. “You can’t lose, I think it’s not more than 10 pounds or gain more than 10 pounds. You have to kind of stay at the weight that’s in your contract.”

Universal, which distributed the “Pitch Perfect” films, did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Adapting a stage play for the screen can be deceptively tricky. In the world of film, storytellers are encouraged to show rather than tell; in theater, they must be sure that even audience members in the nosebleed seats can follow along. Filmmaking can zero in on the microscopic, the unspoken: Moviegoers can see a character’s hair stand on end or track another’s nervous gaze. IFC Films has acquired North American rights to The Almond And The Seahorse starring Rebel Wilson in her first dramatic role ahead of the world premiere at Zurich Film Festival.

“Riverdale’s” Charles Melton is set to star in the next film from “Carol” director Todd Haynes, a drama titled “May December,” according to an individual with knowledge of the project.

Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore are also attached to star.

Haynes is directing the film based on a script by Samy Burch (with a story by Burch and Alex Mechanik). It’ll be the sixth time that Moore and Haynes have worked together, including on her Oscar-nominated performance in “Far From Heaven.”

IFC Films has acquired the North American rights to “The Almond and the Seahorse,” a drama that marks the first dramatic role for “Pitch Perfect” star Rebel Wilson.

“The Almond and the Seahorse” will make its world premiere at the upcoming Zurich Film Festival, and IFC Films has already set its release date for both in theaters and on demand for Dec. 16.

Celyn Jones and cinematographer Tom Stern (“American Sniper”) co-directed the film from a script by playwright Kaite O’Reilly, based on her own play.

“For Gwen (Trine Dyrholm), it’s always 1999. The face in the mirror is unfamiliar and her partner, Toni (Charlotte Gainsbourg), isn’t recognisable to her despite waking up together every day.

Exclusive: IFC Films has acquired North American rights to The Almond and the Seahorse, prior to the film making its world premiere at the Zurich Film Festival. The film stars Rebel Wilson in her first dramatic role.

Directed by BAFTA winner Celyn Jones (Six Minutes to Midnight) and BAFTA nominee Tom Stern, the film also stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Trine Dyrholm, Meera Syal and Celyn Jones. The script is by Jones and playwright Kaite O’Reilly, based on the latter’s play.

IFC Films will release the film December 16 in theaters and on-demand.

For Gwen (Dyrholm), it’s always 1999. The face in the mirror is unfamiliar, and her partner, Toni (Gainsbourg), isn’t recognizable to her despite waking up together every day. For Joe (Jones), his past is coming undone, and his partner, Sarah (Wilson), fears she will be forgotten. A doctor refuses to give up on them, determined not to let them all unravel.

The festival celebrates UK independent cinema and runs September 28 - October 2.

Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees Of Inisherin will screen at France’s Dinard Festival Of British Film (September 28 - October 2), with Sophie Hyde’s Good Luck To You, Leo Grande closing the event.

Both films will have their French premiere at the festival which is held on the coastal town of Dinard, France and celebrates independent cinema from the UK.

Actress Rebel Wilson has come forward for the first time with a story about being sexually harassed at the hands of an unnamed male co-star.

Wilson told People magazine that several years ago, this co-star called her into a room and “pulled down his pants” before asking her to perform a lewd act—all, in front of his friends.

“It was awful and disgusting, said Wilson. “And all the behavior afterwards — this was all before #MeToo — where they kind of tried to destroy me and my career. If it had happened after #MeToo, then I could have just blasted them.”

Rebel Wilson is leading the cast of the film alongside Charlotte Gainsbourg, the story follows an archaeologist and an architect as they fight to re-imagine a future after traumatic brain injury leaves them adrift from the people they love.

Bankside Films, which is handling international sales, has closed first deals for Australia and New Zealand (Transmission), Eastern Europe (HBO), Poland (Galapagos), Israel (Shoval Films), Portugal (Nos Lusomundo), Middle East (Front Row), Switzerland (Praesens), Taiwan (A Really Good Film Company), Airlines (Skeye). Picnik Entertainment is handling UK rights.

Wrexham Afc, the Welsh soccer club recently taken over by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, is to be the subject of “A League Apart,” a British romantic comedy from Mad As Birds, producers of “The Vanishing,” starring Gerard Butler.

To be directed by S.J. Evans (“Hiraeth”), the film will follow Phil, a lovable yet down-on-his-luck man obsessed with his failing Wrexham Afc soccer team. His American girlfriend, Christina, wants more out of life and love and Phil must prove that she is more important to him than his soccer team winning.

While “A League Apart” is a work of fiction, its climax is centered around the real-life 1992 Fa Cup clash between bottom of the league underdogs Wrexham and reigning Division One champions, Arsenal.

The project is in the final stages of development, with plans to begin filming in the summer of 2021.
