Mad Solutions to Launch Global Sales Company Mad World For Arab Cinema in Cannes
Image
Pan-Arab distributor Mad Solutions is expanding operations by setting up Mad World, a Dubai-based company dedicated to selling Arab movies internationally that will officially launch in Cannes.

Touted as Arab cinema’s first global sales outfit, Mad World segues from Mad Solution’s first foray in the international distribution arena last year with Sudanese director Mohamed Kordofani’s “Goodbye Julia” which they sold widely after it’s splashy launch from Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section.

In addition to acquiring global rights to an increasing number of international co-productions, the Cairo-based studio has been stepping up its involvement in packaging Arabic projects with global market potential.

Besides fresh product, Mad World will be handling sales on an extensive library of recent festival award-winners, including shorts, and a back-catalog of titles comprising regional theatrical and streaming titles, many of which have not reached audiences outside the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region.

‘Hunting for the Hag’ Review
Image
Stars: Jasmine Williams, Daniel Roebuck, Alexa Maris, Sierra Renfro, Nathan Brandon Gaik | Written by Paul A. Brooks, Sierra Renfro | Directed by Paul A. Brooks

Hunting for the Hag begins with Tara sitting across the table from a rather sceptical lawyer who keeps telling her the footage on her laptop won’t help her out of the mess she’s in. She reminds him that he was the one who contacted her, and if he doesn’t actually watch the footage, or she’s leaving.

The footage also begins with Tara, noticeably lacking the facial scar she had in the opening scenes, introducing herself as we find out that she, along with her friends Beth and Candy are setting out to get footage of the entity known as The Hawthorne Hag (Nathan Brandon Gaik; Dead Bodies Everywhere).

You might be thinking that it sounds like, director Paul A. Brooks and co-writer...

Image
Nicolas Coster, the British-American actor who played an evasive lawyer in All the President’s Men, a fiendish kidnapper in All My Children, zany businessman Lionel Lockridge on Santa Barbara, and the father of Lisa Whelchel’s Blair Warner in The Facts of Life, died Monday at a hospital in Florida. He was 89.

His death was announced by his daughter Dinneen Coster on social media. “There is great sadness in my heart this evening, my father actor Nicolas Coster has passed on in Florida at 9:01 pm in the hospital,” Dinneen Coster wrote on Facebook. “Please be inspired by his artistic achievements and know he was a real actor’s actor!”

‘Death Rider in the House of Vampires’ Review
Image
Stars: Devon Sawa, Tasha Reign, Danny Trejo, Julian Sands, Ashley Wisdom, Kim Director, Sean Waltman, Lee Ving, Eli Roth, James Cullen Bressack, Jen Soska, Sylvia Soska | Written and Directed by Glenn Danzig

I’m not sure what’s more surprising, that I’m reviewing a movie called Death Rider in the House of Vampires or that, after Verotika, somebody put up money for Glenn Danzig to make another movie. But here we are.

As the film opens Death Rider is riding through a desert filled with warning signs and crucified bodies. He leads another horse, with a bound, topless woman on it. She is his entrance fee to Sanctuary, one female virgin. She looks like she probably couldn’t remember when she actually was a virgin but that’s besides the point.

After riding for what seems to be hours and running into some trouble from Bela Latigo he arrives...

’86 Melrose Avenue’ Review
Image
Stars: Dade Elza, Kambra Potter, Jake Red, Anastasia Antonia, Anastasia Antonia, Gary Sturm, Jim O’Heir, Terri Ivens | Written and Directed by Lili Matta

A bloodied man makes his way down a Los Angeles street while a police helicopter flies overhead looking for him. This is Travis (Dade Elza; You Can’t Have It) he’s armed, dangerous and heading towards Melrose Avenue. Which is where he ducks into the first open building he finds, the art gallery at 86 Melrose Avenue and takes everyone hostage. And then the flashbacks begin.

We get a quick scene of the gallery’s two very obviously gay owners bickering over the company’s finances. Then we go to Travis’ house where his wife Madeline is having dinner with an old friend, Dallas (Jake Red; Devil’s Junction: Handy Dandy’s Revenge). An argument between the two men turns deadly and Travis goes on the run.

‘The Last Exorcist’ Review
Image
Stars: Danny Trejo, Rachele Brooke Smith, Terri Ivens, Nicolas Coster, Leah Ann Cevoli, Branden Smith, Adam Horner, Melanie Brooke Sweeney, Dennis Lavalle | Written by Robin Bain, Amy Brown Carver, Lizzie Gordon | Directed by Robin Bain

I have watched too many Danny Trejo movies to know that just by having his name on the poster and physical media artwork does not guarantee a good movie. Of course, he’s been in some movies I absolutely love but his name is often used when he features for little more than seconds in a movie and I thought that would probably be the case with The Last Exorcist.

I wasn’t far wrong, to be honest but Danny Trejo’s role here could be called a little bit more than a cameo. In The Last Exorcist, we follow two sisters who have had a difficult upbringing and have neither of their parents still with them.

Watch: Danny Trejo’s A Demon-Hunting Priest In The Last Exorcist Trailer
Image
Movies about demonic possession are such a popular subgenre that it can sometimes be difficult to tell them apart, especially since they most often reference exorcism in their title. The latest such offering, The Last Exorcist, is a perfect example of this and has now had a new trailer released.

The story sees a terrorist attack take out all of the world’s priests trained in performing exorcisms, leading to humanity becoming unprecedentedly vulnerable to the actions of demons. Soon after, a young woman named Terri is possessed, leading to her sister Jo seeking help from Marco, who wasn’t killed in the attack for reasons not specified – possibly for being barred from performing the ritual and so wasn’t present when the other exorcists were killed – and the pair of them attempt to save Terri.

With its familiar setup, the movie might have remained in relative obscurity were it not for another factor,...

We're back with another edition of Horror Highlights! In today's installment, watch the short film Insecticide, learn more about the new comic book series Black of Heart, watch the trailer for The Last Exorcist, and read an interview with the director of Cruiser!

Watch the Short Film Insecticide: "I made a short horror film during lockdown with my wife that I thought might be of interest - we both suffer from Anxiety Disorder so our mental health during this new paranoid way of living has reached new and old heights - it's the first time I've properly picked up my old Dslr in 3 years.

I wanted to channel what I was feeling and inject the anxious, paranoiac claustrophobia of right now into a short work by setting myself ground rules - That constant nervous energy must be present even behind the camera in every aspect of making this, so...
