Welcome to paradise, Green Day fans. The punk icons are producing a comedy movie inspired by their time living in a tour van during their early days as a rock trio.
The film is called “New Years Rev,” it’s a comedy written and directed by Lee Kirk (“Ordinary World”), and it is already in production in Oklahoma. Let’s hope this movie about the early days of a musical icon is more successful than the scrapped one based on Pharrell Williams’ childhood.
Here’s the official synopsis: “New Years Rev” is a coming-of-age story about three friends — played by Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust — who journey to Los Angeles, mistakenly believing that their band is opening for Green Day on New Years Eve. Their roadtrip is a rowdy and mischievous jaunt across the country filled with adventures, based on the exploits of Green Day and their years...

At least one in ten people experience some form of chronic pain. But not all of them have fibromyalgia. Figures like Lady Gaga, Sinead O’Connor and Morgan Freeman have used their fame to bring much-needed visibility to this condition. Yet, despite increased eyeballs and attention, fibromyalgia still remains largely misunderstood.
While chronic pain can take many-a-form, fibromyalgia is deceptively different. Characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, and cognitive difficulties, it tends to affect nearly every aspect of day to day life.
Lady Gaga in Gaga: Five Foot Two | Credits: Netflix
More than seven years ago, Lady Gaga’s Netflix documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two intrigued her fans (and also ones afflicted by the condition) on multiple levels. While the film provided insight into the singer’s personal life, career, and struggles, it also shed light on her battle with fibromyalgia.
What is Fibromyalgia and what causes it?
Fibromyalgia is not just musculoskeletal pain.

Before tuning into Cypher for the first time under the impression it's simply a documentary about a rapper's rise to fame, perhaps take the following statement from the director to heart: "It plays more like horror." The man behind Me at the Zoo and Netflix's Gaga: Five Foot Two, Chris Moukarbel wrote and directed the chilling new hybrid documentary Cypher, about another famed musician, Grammy-nominated rapper Tierra Whack. Dating back to 2011, Whack has been all over the music scene and finally has her own studio album dropping next year, six years after her first LP, the 15-minute Whack World.
In the meantime, her acclaimed new film Cypher should be embraced by music and conspiracy-lovers everywhere. We recently caught up with Moukarbel to learn more about how he got Whack to sign on to such an alternative, mind-blogging feature. Don't miss it, and check out more from our exclusive interview below.

"Fame is whack," reads the tagline of Cypher, a groundbreaking new film about Grammy-nominated rapper Tierra Whack from writer-director Chris Moukarbel. The adjective "whack" here is appropriate for a number of reasons, as you'll learn upon watching the new Hulu offering in its entirety. If you believe the 1969 moon-landing was fake, that JFK was assassinated by his own family, and that Paul McCartney actually died all those years ago, you might find the outrageous theories woven into Cypher at least a tad intriguing.
Eminem's throwback classic song gave rise to the term "Stan," often used in contemporary times to describe obsessed fans of certain musicians. Cypher centers on a couple of different Stans who involve themselves in Tierra Whack's life as she navigates fame, success, and more in the music biz. Much of the narrative story elements here may be fiction at the end of the day, but...

When you see a documentary about a game-changing pop star, you assume you’re going to get the story of the music, and also a good look at the life, and that there’ll be enough (on both counts) to go around. I was eager to see “Let the Canary Sing,” a documentary portrait of Cyndi Lauper, because it’s directed by Alison Ellwood, who made “The Go-Go’s” a few years back, and that movie had everything: the drama, the trauma, the saga of a total pop-music reset, as we watched the Go-Go’s bust down doors that had been too tightly shut for too long. Cyndi Lauper was no less revolutionary a figure, arriving in the early ’80s, along with Madonna, to announce that we were in the midst of a seismic new definition of what it meant to be a female pop star. The definition was: a star...

In the last few years, I’ve happily watched and reviewed documentaries about Lady Gaga and Billie Eilish, both of which were presented on major streaming services and made with the full cooperation of the artists in question. So it wouldn’t have been shocking if either of those films turned out to be a glorified promotional tool. On the other hand, “Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free,” which premiered today at SXSW, is built around a trove of 16mm footage discovered in 2020 in the Tom Petty archive. The film was shot by Petty’s filmographer Martyn Atkins while Petty was recording his second solo album, “Wildflowers” (1994), and performing on the concert tour that followed its release.
In 2021, just saying the phrase “16mm” can give you a tingle. It sounds so raw and private, so home-movie analog. But here’s an irony for you. Both the Lady Gaga and Billie Eilish docs are,...

System of a Down is a renowned, Grammy-winning hard rock band, but the new Garin Hovannisian-directed documentary Truth To Power at Oscilloscope Laboratories shows a different side of them — specifically putting the spotlight on the band’s frontman, Serj Tankian.
Opening in virtual theaters today, Truth to Power brings audiences into the world of Tankian. Through exclusive interviews and original footage personally filmed by the international rock star, the docu pulls the curtain back as we see his revolutionary music career, his work in social justice and how he uses his platform for political change. His decades-long campaign for formal U.S. recognition of the Armenian Genocide was finally approved by Congress in 2019. He’s loved by his fans but has a very divisive relationship with the government.

Just One Film is a series that recommends individual films from festivals around the world—the movies you otherwise might have missed that deserve to be discovered. When American folk singer and guitarist Karen Dalton died in 1993 of an AIDS-related illness at age 55, there were few film recordings or other traces of her as an artist left behind. Her raw, idiosyncratic renditions quickly won admirers like Bob Dylan when she hit New York’s Greenwich Village scene in the ‘60s, but she had a disdain for ingratiating herself to starmakers keen to engineer her image for public consumption that contributed to her existence on the margins of mainstream fame. During her on-off engagement with the business she made only two studio albums, It's So Hard to Tell Who's Going to Love You the Best (1969) and In My Own Time (1971), but her cult influence (inspiring artists such as Nick Cave and Joanna Newsom) has only grown.

What’s it like to be universally beloved? “Shawn Mendes: In Wonder,” from Netflix that documents a year in the life of the 22-year-old Canadian pop sensation, doesn’t know the answer, but sure tries to capture the experience. With more than 17 million record sales, nearly 26 million Twitter followers, and twice that many on Instagram, Mendes has an immeasurable fan base the world over and, at least according to Grant Singer’s new film, he appears to handle his status as contemporary pop’s infallible dreamboat well. He’s such a walking, beaming ray of positivity despite the onus of fandom that it’s almost amazing, and at times exhausting. While “In Wonder” lacks the drama and revelation of other recent pop-music X-rays like “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” “Gaga: Five Foot Two,” and “Taylor Swift: Miss Americana,” it could provide a sweet salve for viewers beaten down by the year from hell.

Fly-on-the-wall portraits of pop-music stars used to be dominated by, you know, pop music. The life and personality and woe-is-me-i’m-caught-in-the-media-fishbowl spectacle of the star herself was part of the equation, yet all that stuff had a way of dancing around the edges. Now, though, it’s front and center. In “Taylor Swift: Miss Americana,” we catch glimpses of the 30-year-old pop supernova as she struts onstage in fire-engine-red lipstick and outfits that seem to have been carved out of glitter. We see her as she greets weeping fans in Tokyo, and in the studio with the producer Joel Little, where she noodles away at the piano and nails down the hook of a song like “Me!”
Yet in “Miss Americana,” it’s the verité psychodrama of the personal and private Taylor Swift, cuddling up to the piano with her cat, that dominates. The way to make a movie...

Lady Gaga won a bunch of MTV Video Music Awards for “Bad Romance,” so it stands to reason that she’ll win again for another bad romance, right? She’s nominated twice (Song of the Year and Best Collaboration) for “Shallow,” her duet with Bradley Cooper as doomed lovers in “A Star is Born” (watch it above). But “Shallow” isn’t the front-runner in either of its categories. Are we underestimating it?
Altogether Lady Gaga has won 13 Moonmen out of 28 nominations, which makes her one of the most awarded artists in the history of the VMAs. By far her biggest success came in 2010 when she received a record 13 nominations and won 8 of them, including Video of the Year for “Bad Romance.” That video alone won seven prizes, which makes it the second most awarded video of all time, behind Peter Gabriel‘s iconic “Sledgehammer,” which won nine times in 1987.

Netflix has become a destination for television visionaries like Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy, with deals worth $100 million and $250 million, respectively, and top comedians like Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle. The streaming giant, which just announced it’s added nearly 10 million subscribers in Q1, is honing in on music, too, landing a three-project deal with Beyonce worth a whopping $60 million, sources tell Variety.
The first of the three specials is “Homecoming,” the behind-the-scenes documentary chronicling her 2018 Coachella performance — a massive spectacle of dance, visuals and music that reaffirmed Beyonce’s moniker of Queen Bey — which premiered on April 17. The price tag on this installment, for which Beyonce Knowles-Carter is credited as executive producer, writer and director, hovers around $20 million. Beyonce’s rep did not respond to Variety’s requests for comment; Netflix declined comment for this story, although a source at the company disputed the financial terms of the deal.

Lady Gaga came away a winner on Sunday night, but she lost something much more dear.
Shortly after she won the award (in a tie with Glenn Close) for Best Actress at the Critics’ Choice Awards, Gaga shared an Instagram post saying that she was rushing to “say goodbye” to her dying horse, named Arabella.
“She is and was a beautiful horse,” the “A Star is Born” actress wrote. “Our souls and spirits were one. When she was in pain, so was I. I will never forget the moments we shared.”
Along with her brief eulogy, Gaga shared a photo of her riding Arabella during a Vanity Fair photo shoot in Italy.

Last Year’s Winner: “13th”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: After earning its first nomination in 2014, Netflix is riding a two-year win streak with “What Happened, Miss Simone?” (2016) and “13th” (2017).
Fun Fact: Since the category morphed from Outstanding Informational Special in 1998, HBO has won eight of the 20 trophies and landed multiple nominations 11 times.
In recent years, documentaries with a little extra buzz have done well for themselves in this category. Both “What Happened, Miss Simone?” and “13th” benefitted from earning Oscar nominations. That bodes well for “Icarus,” which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature earlier this year. No other contenders were Film Academy nominees, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t docs or nonfiction specials with lots of buzz.
HBO has a slew of contenders, all of which have caused a stir in and outside the industry. “Andre the Giant” has big-name subjects supporting the doc on the famous wrestler-turned-actor,...

Damn. it was a good year for music.
It didn’t always feel that way, though. While Kendrick Lamar’s aforementioned fourth studio album -- which hit like a meteor on the Friday before the rapper’s monster set to close out Coachella -- much of 2017 was defined by growers rather than out of the gate jams and much of the summer passed without a bona fide “Song of” said season. (Barely. More on that in a second.)
Really, it's only on looking back at the cavalcade of "Best Of" lists that footnote every year that you realize how full of noteworthy sounds 2017 in particular was. And now, with the nearly ubiquitous acceptance of streaming as the primary method of song consumption, not only is the roster of artists who find both large audiences and critical acclaim more diverse and democratized than ever, but the entire idea of a publication-determined "Best Music of the Year" feels almost silly. “Meredith,” the singer continued. “I’m so sorry that you got hit in the face and that you’re bleeding.

This month, Netflix released a new documentary that offers a look inside the life of one of the world's most prolific pop stars. The film, called Gaga: Five Foot Two, captures a tumultuous year in the life of Mother Monster. We learn that Gaga suffers from fibromyalgia and endures chronic pain that stems from an old hip injury. We got a behind-the-scenes look at her incredible Super Bowl Halftime Show performance. We got a glimpse of her work on American Horror Story. And, most shocking of all, we find out she still feels a bit raw about her feud with Madonna. In order to add proper context to the deeply personal moment, we decided to do little research and recount the entire history of their rivalry. Strap in.

Lady Gaga can be a great musician, it’s true. But the new documentary about her, Gaga: Five Foot Two, would make anybody unfamiliar with her question why. The film follows a year with the singer as she records her latest album, Joanne (admission: I’m not a fan), and prepares for the big stage of the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Yet something about this film lingers as ever so slightly off.
Part of the problem with Chris Moukarbel’s film is that it’s never quite verite. The camera is never just a fly on the wall to Gaga’s world, but instead a witness to events that lack authenticity...
