The screenplay was written during Covid-19 lock-down in June 2020 and the film went into production soon after, during a fortuitous break in restrictions, with principal photography taking place April through May 2021. Soon after, Australia was sent into another lock-down that lasted for three months. In this time, the film was put through post-production and released to festivals in October 2021.
The plot was loosely inspired by a sex tape scandal involving British comedian Joel Dommett . Other plot elements, namely online harassment culture and targeted bullying, were inspired by the experiences of author and Youtuber Lindsay Ellis and video game developer Zoë Quinn . Some citations were lifted from the works of Alain de Botton and his organization "The School of Life", to further develop the educational, philosophical and psychological elements of the film.
