Solar Opposites, a new animated offering from Rick and Morty creative duo Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan, is headed to Hulu, set to showcase the story of a family of advanced extraterrestrials who have been forced to take refuge on a planet in the backwater part of the galaxy, called Earth, specifically in suburban middle America.

Brandishing obvious aesthetic similarities to the ultra-popular Adult Swim series, Solar Opposites will feature a voice cast consisting of Roiland, joined by Sean Giambrone (The Goldbergs), Mary Mack (Golan the Insatiable) and Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley).

Hulu was clearly confident in Roiland and McMahan, having given their new brainchild a two-season order back in August 2018, confirming 16-episodes overall and cementing Solar Opposites Season 2 nearly two years before the series would ultimately premiere.

Television shows can sometimes get attacked for being “random” with their storytelling or comedy, but it’s actually quite difficult to be effectively random. There’s an art to surprising your audience with a complete left turn, yet one that’s not so disconnected or weird that it will alienate viewers.

The same can be said for parodies that take established structures and turn them on their head and breathe fresh life into traditional tropes. Many programs on Adult Swim follow this formula to some degree, but last year the first season of Hot Streets proved that it was particularly special.

Seth Green and several other “Robot Chicken” writers and producers have sold an adult animated comedy pilot to Hulu, Variety has learned exclusively.

The series is titled “Crossing Swords.” When Patrick, a goodhearted young peasant with dreams of earning his knighthood and dispensing justice to evildoers, lands a coveted squire position at the royal castle, his dream job quickly turns into a nightmare. In this kingdom, corruption starts at the top, and staying true to his lofty goals will be a thornier proposition than Patrick anticipated. It’s all the sex, violence and full-frontal nudity you’d expect from a “premium fantasy soap starring pre-school toys.”

John Havartine and Tom Root will write and executive produce. Havartine joined “Robot Chicken” as an executive producer in 2012 during the show’s sixth season, while Root is the show’s head writer and executive producer. Green will also executive produce along with Matt Senreich and Eric Towner.

Brian Wysol, creator of Adult Swim’s new animated series Hot Streets wanted to bring back the days of Space Ghost and The Brak Show, with his surreal sci-fi adventure series. If you’ve been tuning in to Adult Swim as of late, you’ve probably stumbled across Wysol’s creation, which premiered during the late-night block of unusual animated and live-action programming earlier this month. That means you’ve also taken in the adventures of agents Mark Branski and Donald French, as they investigate and do battle with all sorts of weird, supernatural creatures.

Hands down, my favorite moment to come out of this interview with Brian Wysol, creator of Adult Swim's new twisted comedy series Hot Streets, was discovering that Justin Roiland of Rick and Morty fame once told him that he might have gone too far with one of his jokes.
