Anime villains practically have their own subgenre in the community. They are so dastardly that many of them have become iconic fixtures in the anime universe. Yet, even after that, several of these superstars of evil stand out for their unconscionable wickedness. Many of these characters are so villainous that they would put any Game of Thrones villain to shame.
The evilest, most ruthless anime villains can wipe out entire cities without a second thought. They are so heartless that even the most heinous acts seem to delight them. Just as with Game of Thrones, these villains have no qualms about the pain they inflict on others. Their only concern is what they can get out of any situation through the most brutal means possible.

The horror genre is an intriguing media phenomenon that causes fans to get excited over things commonly considered repulsing, disturbing, and majorly distressing. Despite its paradoxes, nothing stimulates the viewers' senses like a brilliantly terrifying horror. Horror media, including in the anime space, has many tools to make the audience's blood run cold, from shocking jump scares to gruesome gore scenes.
However, the most unspeakable terrors are often those that lurk in the shadows of any person's soul. The subgenre of psychological horror in anime and beyond messes with the viewers' perception of good and evil, right and wrong, which can cause way more distress than any atrociously violent scene. From dark fantasies like Berserk to Made in Abyss anime has plenty of excellent psychological horror content to satisfy fans.

Not every anime needs to speed-run its ending and never give its audience a break to really soak in the story. Sometimes, it's a much more enjoyable experience when an anime takes its time to flesh-out its characters, world, and story. A slow burn story might turn some potential fans away that prefer a more speedy plot, but a lot of nuance can be lost if the plot is running at breakneck speed.
Anime that takes the time to appreciate the finer details at a slower pace can offer an escape and balance the plot with a lot of characterization and even world-building. Not every anime needs to be told at a slow pace, however, but those that offer a wholly different experience than typical shōnen or seasonal series such as a slice-of-life. Ultimately, pacing dictates everything and there are a particular few anime that have told unforgettable stories without sacrificing time.

Anime that dive into a dystopian version of Earth always have a high-stakes story that leaves viewers at the edge of their seat. Stories set in an apocalyptic environment provide a great way to explore the beautiful and ugly sides of humanity.
Normally, in dystopian settings, humanity is at the brink of extinction, and each decision a character makes can either lead to the world being saved or the death of a comrade. It's not often fans of anime see a female protagonist being the icon of an apocalyptic anime, but when they are, it offers a whole other different perspective.

There are very few horror game-to-anime adaptations out there, and none stand out like Corpse Party: Tortured Souls. The horror adventure video game was already a cult classic, but the anime took things to the next level in terms of pushing the boundaries of terror.
In under two hours, Corpse Party: Tortured Souls will make you shiver far more than the new failed Uzumaki adaptation ever will or all 12 episodes of Another.

The anime adaptation does not play around with gore and the sheer terror it wants to inflict on its audience. It’s not for the faint of heart one bit. Even fans of Made in Abyss might not be able to withstand the likes of Corpse Party: Tortured Souls.
From the sound design to the grotesque imagery, the video game-to-anime adaptation haunts the viewers even after more than a decade of its release.

Made in Abyss is excellent in unpacking some of the most unsettling themes within its plot. The series is a complete treat in terms of its spectacular animation along with its compelling storyline.
And while it has been criticized for its portrayal of abuse and violence, it captures the horrors and perils perfectly. This is especially true with Riko’s journey throughout the series. This, however, was subject to change.

Emily Rudd, the live-action actress for Nami in Netflix’s One Piece, is a hardcore anime fan who doesn’t stop watching and recommending them. Of all her co-stars from the live-action cast, the American actress seems the most devoted to it, even learning Japanese on the side. Rudd has claimed Made in Abyss is her favorite anime of all time while also loving the likes of One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen, Sailor Moon, and so on.
What’s surprising about her choice is how dark and complex the themes of Made in Abyss are. It rivals the likes of Dandadan and The Promised Neverland. The mature themes hidden behind humor and quirky designs might fool you but some of the scenes in Made in Abyss would rattle even those obsessed with gore.

While crafting an epic adventure series, one of the most important elements that needs to be addressed first is its world-building. It is true that series like One Piece, Naruto, and Hunter x Hunter have set the bar quite high in this regard. However, they still cannot outshine the breathtaking world of Made in Abyss.

Renowned anime director Kazuchika Kise, known for directing Ghost in the Shell: Arise, voiced his concerns over the growing prevalence of isekai themes in anime in a recent interview.
In the interview Kise questioned the industry’s fascination with escapist narratives and the apparent decline in more grounded storytelling.
He found the trend particularly strange given the fantastical elements often involved, citing a recent anime with character reborn as vending machine as a prime example.
“There are too many stories that make you think, ‘Does everyone hate the real world that much?’ It’s strange how there are so many stories revolving around reincarnation. Recently, there are even works where characters are reborn as vending machines… I was truly dumbfounded (laughs). When it comes to anime, it feels like there are fewer grounded stories nowadays.“
When asked about what he considers a grounded story, Kise drew comparisons to Ghost in the Shell.

Although horror anime is often defined by how successfully a show scares its viewers, how it chooses to do so is flexible, allowing authors and directors to approach the genre from numerous different angles to create vastly different experiences. While many fans are used to the blood, gore, and jumpscares often associated with horror, there is another sub-genre that can be just as frightening in a far more subtle way: psychological horror. Instead of relying on overt scare tactics, psychological horror aims to spook the audience by using their own mind and sanity against them. By testing the character's emotional boundaries alongside their physical ones, in moments of great distress, viewers are treated to mind-bending yet terrifying experiences that may make or break a character's entire psyche. Sometimes, the monster is merely just a monster, but occasionally, it's something far harder to comprehend, and it's that unpredictable threat that makes this genre so thrilling.

Though it's seemingly a cute and child-friendly series, the Made in Abyss anime is full of gut-wrenching, harrowing storytelling. This has allowed the franchise to go on for over a decade. Soon, the anime and movie versions of the franchise became very popular. Both of these adaptations are still going, as is the manga source material. There's no better time to get into the series in any of its forms. The second season of the Made in Abyss anime, titled The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, dropped in July 2022.
Made in Abyss had already captivated audiences with its beautiful art and deep world building, among other things. As a result, those who missed the bandwagon the first time around might need to do some catching-up. There are some important pieces of media to watch in order for anime viewers to watch in order to fully enjoy Made in Abyss.

Made in Abyss may appear to be a kid-friendly anime, but it quickly reveals a darker and gruesome side that would give any child nightmares. While the art and aesthetics of Made in Abyss are beautiful, they hide an ugly underbelly of intense imagery, sexual innuendo, and mature themes that are not suitable for younger viewers. Made in Abyss is not just about the grotesque body horror, but also explores deep and disturbing emotional turmoil, making it too intense and unsettling for children. Adults should watch it to appreciate the complex narrative and the mysteries it presents.

The best fantasy manga offer immersive and captivating experiences with detailed worldbuilding and intriguing premises. Fantasy is a broad genre that allows for virtually any type of story to be told, from dark ones that focus on the negativity and horrific potential of humanity to cheerful ones set in entirely fictional colorful worlds. Land of the Lustrous and Frieren: Beyond Journey's End offer unique and thought-provoking takes on the genre, exploring themes of life, death, and personal growth, while Tokyo Ghoul, Hunter x Hunter, and Berserk deliver darker and grittier fantasy stories.

Some anime adaptations surpass the greatness of their original manga by adding elements like impeccable animation or enhanced voice acting. Anime like "Hunter x Hunter" and "Made in Abyss" improve upon their source material by fixing flaws or censoring uncomfortable content. Shows like "Nichijou" and "Mob Psycho 100" take advantage of animation to elevate the comedy and action, making the anime versions superior to the manga.
When creating an adaptation it is incredibly difficult to surpass the greatness of the original work, however, some anime better than their manga source material. While the high quality of these anime doesn't detract from the greatness of the original manga that inspired them, they are often recommended as the ideal way to experience the story. While other shows may easily be enjoyed in a more passive manner, without requiring much attention, these typically require viewers to be truly invested and figure out the truth alongside the protagonists.

Everybody knows how dominant Star Wars has been in the sci-fi genre for years, and this huge franchise has inspired countless others to follow suit in exploring space, time, and beyond. While Star Wars itself is still going today having been established back in the 1970s, it does still have plenty of competition, even from sci-fi anime.
As with any genre, anime has the advantage of accentuating and exaggerating the impossible, making out-of-this-world situations even more of a spectacle in some cases. There are plenty of sci-fi anime that have established good universes and characters, but only a select few can compete with Star Wars, or in some cases surpass this storied franchise.

The cast of One Piece gushes over the opportunity to be part of the Netflix adaptation, but Emily Rudd went further to confess their meeting with Oda was a scary experience.
Rudd shared her enthusiasm for anime with the One Piece cast during a Collider interview. She was also quick to recall her experience when asked if they personally met manga creator Eiichiro Oda by any chance. Rudd didn't hold back and confessed she did but was starstruck petrified, saying, "I also was able to meet Oda Sensei and it was easily the most scared I've ever been in my whole life. He's a lovely dude, but, he's kind of like a god, you know? So, I was like, 'Oh man, I can't. Hello, it's so nice to meet you,' I'm like just shaking."

If you're an anime fan, chances are you're already invested in the world of streaming. It's never been easier to catch up on seasonal releases coming out of Japan, and given the monumental rise in popularity of both anime and manga, services like the newly-merged Crunchyroll are practically essential. A newcomer to the streaming world, however, has made a notable impact by securing a batch of significant releases from Sentai Filmworks. At a time when we're all a little strapped for cash, do we really want to invest in yet another streaming service?
This newcomer service, HiDive, originally hit the scene in 2017 but has since grown to become a surprisingly viable contender in the anime streaming space. Backed by AMC Networks, who also own the Sentai Filmworks distribution company, HiDive has grown from a humble re-brand of an existing service to what could be a potential rival against the combined libraries of Crunchyroll and Funimation.
