Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers from Episode 7 of The Last of UsWhen HBO's blockbuster fantasy drama Game of Thrones was hitting its prime right around Seasons 5 and 6, and epic events like "The Battle of the Bastards," the recruitment of the Wildlings at Hardhome, and House Stark pushing to unseat House Bolton as Wardens of the North, we were introduced to a myriad of new and interesting characters — Perhaps none more than young Lady Lyanna Mormont of Bear Island who is played by current The Last of Us star, Bella Ramsey. From the moment she first appeared in "The Broken Man" episode of Season 6, audiences started asking, "Who is that rambunctious and powerful young woman who is holding her own among the much older actors in her scenes?" When she was introduced at a council meeting of the houses representing House Mormont of Bear Island, she immediately stood out because...

Twenty-three years ago, Hollywood was introduced to the glorious cast of characters known as the X-Men, and it hasn’t looked back since. The past two decades has seen a whopping 13 movies based on Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s beloved comic series, which range from films about the whole X-Men clan to origin stories for individual characters, like Wolverine and Deadpool.
What’s so great about the X-Men movies is that they all stand pretty well on their own. But, like most franchises, (especially within the MCU), there are also a ton of sneaky little threads that hold them all together and make the X-universe a fairly cohesive one.
Though you really can watch these movies in any order, there is a way to watch the X-Men movies in chronological order. You can witness the characters evolve from when the gang first banded together during the Cold War (“X-Men: First Class...

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers from Episode 7 of The Last of Us.Who's calling Episode 7 of The Last of Us entitled, "Left Behind" a filler? Not us! It is a gripping and essential part of Ellie's backstory and the reveal of a new character, Riley (Storm Reid). The episode picks up with a wounded Joel (Pedro Pascal) desperately telling Ellie to go on and leave him behind to die, and she begrudgingly does. But then we get to see what Ellie (Bella Ramsey) was doing prior to being introduced in the show's first episode where she is being held captive at the Boston Q.Z. by Marlene (Merle Dandridge) and the rest of the Fireflies. She is in a Fedra training school for girls where she is already showing signs of being a bit of a troublemaker and free spirit. After getting into a disagreement with the class bully,...

This post contains spoilers for HBO's "The Last of Us" and the video game series of the same name.
In true "The Last of Us" tradition, the latest episode of the HBO series delivers yet another emotional gut-punch by centering the story around Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and her best friend/crush Riley (Storm Reid). The previous episode ended on a cliffhanger, where Joel (Pedro Pascal) seemed to be on the verge of death after getting stabbed and losing a ton of blood. "I can't do this without you, Joel," Ellie pleads desperately, as she is stranded in the middle of nowhere and does not have the resources or know-how to save Joel's life. Pushed into an extreme situation like never before, Ellie relives the incident that marked the beginning of the end: An unforgettable night at the mall with her best friend, Riley, whom she loved, and lost too soon.

Warning! This article contains spoilers for both The Last of Us episode 4 and the original game. The Last of Us episode 4 featured a brand-new faction of enemies for Joel and Ellie to face in the Hunters, a group that will be important going forward. After tragically finding Bill and Frank dead in The Last of Us episode 3, Joel and Ellie continued their journey toward Wyoming to find Joel's brother Tommy. Their journey, greatly aided by Bill's supplies obtained from Lincoln, took the duo past Kansas City, with the highway being blocked forcing them to reroute through the city's heart.
While driving through Kansas City's downtown area, Joel and Ellie encounter an injured man whom Joel deduces is not injured at all. Their truck is then damaged in an ambush set up by the man, kickstarting Joel and Ellie's conflict with the Hunters after their significantly less dangerous outing in the...

Warning! This article contains major spoilers for both The Last of Us episode 3 and the original game.
The Last of Us episode 3 makes a change from the game's canon, but the storytelling decision perfectly complements its adaptation into a prestige TV show. Only three episodes into its season 1 run, The Last of Us has been a significant success for HBO, working a balance between being accessible enough for new viewers and appeasing fans of the game. However, while remaining largely faithful to the source material, there have been some tweaks to the canon, including the Fireflies killing Robert's gang after an exchange gone wrong instead of Joel and Tess doing so single-handedly in the game.
The most notable change to canon so far occurs in episode 3, "Long, Long Time," specifically around The Last of Us' Frank and Bill. The game heavily implies that Bill and Frank are lovers, as in The Last of Us show.

HBO's The Last of Us co-creator explains why Nick Offerman was cast as Bill, despite having a more comedic background. While The Last of Us generally follows the journey of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they desperately try to find the Fireflies, who are waiting across the post-apocalyptic United States, episode 3 featured a significant departure from Joel and Ellie. Instead, the narrative focused on Bill and Frank (Murray Bartlett), two men who meet years after the outbreak and fall in love in the meantime.
While Offerman played his role brilliantly, there was a question of why such a comedy-focused actor – who first came into prominence through Parks and Recreation – would be cast for such a dramatic and heavy role that might even lead to a potential The Last of Us spin-off

DreamWorks and their villains would be a perfect fit for the world of Dungeons and Dragons. They've had dozens of villains grace theater screens, from the dulcet tones of the Fairy Godmother to the most recent sinister slashings of the bounty-hunting Wolf. The characters are larger than life, and it's for that reason that they're so beloved. They would make for a diverse and vicious bunch of characters to wreak havoc on the tabletop. DreamWorks tends to have a fondness for these over-the-top villains, and even the most stoic of them will end up bloodthirsty sooner or later, fitting the mood shifts of an average Dungeons and Dragons game.
All of the bizarre classes that any Dungeons and Dragons party is bound to have would fit right into the elaborate worlds of a DreamWorks movie. These classes are fun because they allow players to create unique characters and explore imaginative worlds,...

HBO’s “The Last of Us” continues to be a ratings juggernaut, with the viewership increasing steadily from week-to-week. The first episode debuted to 4.7 million day-one viewers, while the second episode rocketed up to 5.7 million day-one viewers. This past Sunday night’s beautifully heartbreaking third episode, we’ve learned, hit 6.4 million day-one viewers!
This number represents the Sunday night total between HBO and HBO Max, and Sunday night viewership only represents 20-40 of a show’s total gross audience per episode.
For example, the first two episodes are averaging 21 million viewers in total!
For the sake of comparison, AMC’s “The Walking Dead” posted similar live viewer numbers in its debut season, with Season 1 viewership ranging from 4.71 million to a high of 5.97 million.
“The Last of Us” Season 2, in case you missed the news, has already been ordered.

Warning! This post contains Spoilers for The Last of Us episode 3
HBO's The Last of Us episode 3 has the biggest deviation from the games yet, featuring several new reveals about Bill's partner Frank. In the new live-action series, Frank plays a much larger role than he does in the original game. Rather than already being dead by the time players discover him, audiences get to see how Bill (Nick Offerman) met Frank as well as their deeper relationship made for the series. As such, there's a lot more to discover with this incredibly dynamic character played by Murray Bartlett.
In The Last of Us episode 3, Joel and Ellie are headed for Bill and Frank's fortified town of Lincoln, Massachusetts. Before they arrive, audiences are taken back to 2007, four years after the initial outbreak. This is when Bill inadvertently caught Frank in one of his traps, taking him in and offering him a meal.

Interest in The Last of Us games has spiked following the premiere of the HBO series, but with both The Last of Us Remastered and the Tlou: Part 1 to choose from, it can be tricky to know where to start. The first Tlou has three different versions, each with various features, so it’s reasonable to be confused about where to begin. Thankfully, there is a pretty straightforward answer for which version of The Last of Us new fans should pick up.
The Last of Us was first released midway through 2013 as a PlayStation 3 exclusive title. However, the PlayStation 4 would launch just a few months later in the holiday of the same year. Even though The Last of Us on PS3 looked incredible and played very well, the PS4’s tech allowed for improvement. Just over a year after its initial release, The Last of Us Remastered launched as a PS4 exclusive.

Both Andor and Star Wars: The Last Jedi had the difficult task of following up a successful Star Wars movie, and both took risks by changing the Star Wars’ mold, but only one truly succeeded. Despite both displaying creativity in shaking up the traditional Star Wars format, only one of them was lauded for its bravery—while the other was hated for it. With The Last Jedi, fans looked to Rian Johnson to expand on the elements they loved about Star Wars: The Force Awakens, while also introducing something new to Star Wars universe. And with Andor, fans looked for something akin to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story that still provided a thrilling watch.
There is something to say about the different expectations for these two projects. Andor was meant to explain Cassian Andor’s character and history leading up to Rogue One. But it is—in every respect—a prequel.

Warning! Spoilers for The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part Iihbo's The Last of Us has already introduced a detail that is extremely important to Ellie's character, effectively ruining one of her big moments in The Last of Us season 2. Ellie is arguably the most importance character in both The Last of Us games, with her being the focus of the series' most emotional moments. However, one of these emotional moments may not work anymore, as The Last of Us has potentially mishandled a musical element that was previously essential Ellie's character arc.
After only a few episodes of HBO's popular adaptation, The Last of Us season 2 has already been announced. Although not many details came with the announcement of the show's renewal, The Last of Us season 2 is expected to follow the story of The Last of Us Part II, the 2020 sequel to the original game.

The Last of Us' Cordyceps infection is broken down by a real fungi expert. The video game-based HBO show takes apocalyptic fiction to new heights by depicting an infection caused by the fungus referred to as cordyceps, which brings down civilization in staggering fashion. Warning: Contains minor spoilers for The Last of Us video game.
When deciding who should play Frank in The Last of Us HBO went with a pretty big name for the video game character. In the original video game, Frank is a fairly minor character, and his mere presence in HBO's The Last of Us could be a surprise for viewers who have played the game. The Last of Us' Frank might look familiar, but that's not a surprise when this isn't even his first HBO show.
In the first The Last of Us Game, Frank is never actually seen alive. Frank's body can be found when Joel and Ellie go to Bill's town, with Frank having already taken his own life after becoming infected. From reading notes that can be found throughout the game, it is heavily implied that Frank and Bill were a romantic couple.

The official backstory for the Star Wars character General Hux has revealed the true reason why he betrayed the First Order in Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker. Disney's Star Wars sequel trilogy introduced a variety of interesting new characters in the newest iteration of the galaxy's Empire, the First Order. Kylo Ren in particular has garnered interest for his arc and the way he was portrayed by Adam Driver. However, one character who tends to get looked over more than anyone is General Armitage Hux. Played by Domhnall Gleeson in the films, he's essentially the right-hand man to Kylo Ren as he leads the first firing from the First Order's massive battle station, Starkiller Base. Hux had a lot of potential for who he would become following Snoke's death in Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi...that is, until a startling reveal in the following film.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for both HBO's The Last of Us and the original game!HBO's The Last of Us initially had an origin story for Tess that would have made one specific death later in the show much darker. Creators of The Last of Us, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, initially conceived of an origin story for Tess that would have detailed her life both before and during the Cordyceps outbreak. Mazin revealed that the origin story was written but was never shot by The Last of Us' crew.
However, one thing that was shot was a cold open the team initially intended to use as foreshadowing for Tess' origin, which was cut due to the decision not to include the story. The story involved Tess' time before the outbreak, revealing she had a husband and son who both became infected with The Last of Us' Cordyceps infection.

Who is Rey? It’s a question that become one of the defining talking points of the most recent “Star Wars” trilogy. The answer is simple (she’s Emperor Palpatine’s granddaughter), but the road to get there was anything but.
Rey’s parentage was kept a mystery in “The Force Awakens,” which ignited fan theories debating if the character was the offspring of a Skywalker, or a Kenobi, or so on. “The Last Jedi” rejected those theories by revealing Rey was no one, an orphan whose parents were not tied to the lore of “Star Wars.” “The Rise of Skywalker” then backtracked, revealing Rey as the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine after all.
Given the hugely divisive response to “The Last Jedi,” many people felt “The Rise of Skywalker” retconning Rey’s “no one” parentage and tying her lineage back to Palpatine was a deliberate choice made by Lucasfilm to satisfy the fandom.

Daisy Ridley, the star of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, has weighed in on the controversy over Rey's parentage. With Star Wars: The Force Awakens opening the door to questions concerning the orphaned Rey's true heritage, the entirety of the sequel trilogy offers different explanations for who her parents could be. Is she a secret lost Skywalker, the daughter of two nobodies who rose to become a skilled Force user, or truly the relative of the notorious Emperor Palpatine? In the end, it is revealed that the Palpatine theory is an accurate explanation.
The reality that Rey is related to Emperor Palpatine drew heavy criticism, as the Rey parentage reveal makes the sequel trilogy worse, as it comes so late in the trilogy that another explanation entirely — that Rey is nobody — had already become widely publicly accepted. While the trilogy focuses heavily on the question, Ridley doesn't have the authority...

“This is a very serious and deep question,” says Rm, the 26-year-old leader of the world’s biggest band. He pauses to think. We’re talking about utopian and dystopian futures, about how the boundary-smashing, hegemony-overturning global success of his group, the wildly talented seven-member South Korean juggernaut BTS, feels like a glimpse of a new and better world, of an interconnected 21st century actually living up to its promise.

This Star Wars: The Mandalorian article contains spoilers.
Now that the smoke has cleared and all those dark troopers have felt the heat from Luke’s green blade, we can finally reflect on the legendary Jedi’s debut on The Mandalorian. As exciting as the finale’s biggest moment was, Luke’s cameo proved to be a divisive one among Star Wars fans despite it hardly being all that surprising.
Some fans felt that the cameo was designed to appease toxic fans still angry over the character’s portrayal in The Last Jedi, a move some said resembled the “over correction” in The Rise of Skywalker. In fact, the more toxic corner of the fandom actually believes that Luke’s appearance in The Mandalorian was a personal apology to them for whatever it is they’re mad about.
But, when you cut through all of the discourse, it’s easy...

It’s been a weird and often devastating year, and our social media has reflected that. Tumblr has just released its top fandoms of 2020 and it’s fascinating to see how a year of pandemic and quarantine has affected transformative fandom and broader cultural trends. In a year when almost everyone spent a lot more time at home, Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the most blogged about topic on the social media platform, followed by animated dramedy Steven Universe, Belgian Skam adaptation WtFOCK, K-pop supergroup BTS, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. We talked to Tumblr’s Trend Expert Amanda Brennan about how she interpreted the biggest trends of the year, how this was a big year for animation and international media, and why 2020 was the year everyone stopped worrying about what was cool and just embraced what they love. But, first, some 2020 Tumblr statistics:

It was 30 years ago that Billy Crystal hosted the Academy Awards for the first time. And he hit it out of the park. He would go on to host the show eight times, most recently in 2012. He’s arguably the greatest living former Oscar emcee. And I hope that he returns someday. When I watch the show on Sunday, I’ll be thinking of the jokes that Crystal might have made.
Predict the Oscars now; change them until February 9
And here they are.
1. Good evening and welcome to the Academy Awards. A three-and-a-half-hour TV event with Hollywood’s biggest stars – all dressed up and trying to look decades younger than they really are. It’s like “The Irishman,” only on ABC instead of Netflix.

British producer Jeremy Thomas, whose credits include “The Last Emperor,” “Crash” and “Sexy Beast,” is attending the Marrakech Film Festival where he was interviewed onstage by U.K. film critic Jason Solomons, who introduced him as “the Last Emperor of independent cinema.”
Interviewed by Variety, Thomas talked about Matteo Garrone’s “Pinocchio,” starring Roberto Benigni, which will be released on 600 screens in Italy on Dec. 19 and will be released in Germany, Russia and other European territories on March 20. He is still negotiating English-language world rights.
Garrone is essentially known for his dark films, such as gritty crime movie “Gomorrah,” but has dreamt of adapting Carlo Collodi’s “Pinocchio” since he was a child.
Thomas has previously produced Garrone’s English-language picture “Tale of Tales” (2015), and his crime drama “Dogman,” which competed for the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.

If directing Star Wars movies were like a relay race, J.J. Dominican-American superstar Romeo Santos has a peculiar sense of humor. Latinx social media was abuzz in late March, when Santos announced that he would become a new father twofold in 2019. “Mis Dos Nuevos Bebés Año (My two new babies this year),” wrote Santos on Instagram, beneath a black and white photo he posted of his newborn baby boy’s feet, perched atop the blurred-out cover of his surprise new album — released at midnight this Friday — titled Utopia. In August 2018, Jakiw Palij — a former concentration camp guard identified as “the last known World War II Nazi living in the U.S.” — was deported to his homeland, fully 15 years after a federal court had stripped him of his citizenship. No country, not even Germany, wanted to accept him, and so he remained in America until Trump booted him out last year.
But was Palij, who died in January, really the last of his kind? What if there were others? What if it turned out that there was a Nazi living undetected in your own family? These are but some of the head-scratching questions in Jeff Lipsky’s “The Last,” the latest wall-to-wall talkathon from the hyper-literate writer-director, a former independent film distributor who began his career as an advocate for other tough-sell voices and has become somewhat prolific making a frustratingly amateurish kind of low-budget feature.

When it comes to horror franchises, the promise of finality is too much for fans and studios alike to bear. Regardless of how many times we see horror sequels burdened with subtitles that claim “The Final Chapter,” “The End” or “The Last,” these properties have often clawed their way back. But recently, many of these franchises found themselves lying dormant for far longer than expected, leaving a void within the genre.
