The film stars rising acting talents Lilly Englert and Francesco Leone as an actress and a sculptor who meet on a Southern Italian island.

Other cast members include Claudia Gerini, Rocco Ancarola, Ivo Romagnoli, Felix Maximillian, Tony Schiena, Fuschia Kate Sumner, Lee Levi, Nicoleta Nuca, Jerry Ying, and Marcia Sedoc.

The film marks Scolari’s first fiction feature after the award-winning documentary Paolo Rossi, The Heart of a Champion and the upcoming Romania-shot documentary The Jokers.

Netflix content executive Jennifer Breslow has joined Legendary Television as executive vice president of TV and digital media, the studio announced Thursday.

Breslow will report to Chris Albrecht, who was named head of Legendary TV back in February, when the studio moved to combine its domestic and international operations.

“Jennifer’s proven track record of identifying, developing and creating world class storytelling for global audiences makes her the ideal candidate to join Legendary as we continue to scale our television and digital media footprint,” Albrecht said in a statement. “We are excited to have her as a leader on the Legendary team.”

“I’m thrilled to join Legendary and their remarkable brand of escapist entertainment,” Breslow said. “It’s an exciting opportunity to work at a company whose stellar library of IP has global appeal for audiences and talent. Netflix is on track to open its Italian base in Rome in the second half of 2021, and is committing to doubling down on its output of local original series by 2022.

The streaming giant revealed plans to open a Rome office one year ago, just prior to the pandemic, but the crisis slowed down the opening. Now, the company has taken a lease on a large, classy neoclassic building in central Rome, called Villino Rattazzi, located near the U.S. Embassy and the iconic Via Veneto.

The Netflix Rome office will be opening in the second half of this year and will start out with a staff of 40 employees, ranging from marketing and public relations to production executives. That number is destined to grow, it said in a statement.

Netflix has ordered a new Italian original series titled “Generation 56K” from Cattleya, the Italian “Gomorrah” producer, backed by the U.K.’s ITV Studios.

The eight-episode show is made in collaboration with The Jackal, a collective of Italian comedians that launched on YouTube more than a decade ago and have since entered the mainstream having made several films and worked with public broadcaster Rai.

The series, which targets thirty-somethings, revolves around a group of teens who in the late aughts were “overwhelmed by the arrival of the internet on the threshold of adolescence,” according to promotional materials. Italian firm Indiana Production, German outfit SquareOne Productions and French company Snd (Groupe M6) have revealed details about their Italian-language mafia series L’Ora (Ink Against Bullets).

The 10-part returning mafia origin series is inspired by the real-life investigative endeavors of the Sicilian newspaper of the same name.

The series is directed by Piero Messina, best known for Netflix Original series Suburra, Ciro d’Emilio and Stefano Lorenzi. Currently in post-production, completion is scheduled for Q2, 2021. Snd and SquareOne handle international rights.

ITV is ramping up its production might post-lockdown, with CEO Carolyn McCall trumpeting the company’s progress in resuming scripted drama production.

“It is all good news on the drama front,” said McCall, during a Thursday morning earnings call. Although ITV declared revenue declines across the board in its half-year results, the chief executive was upbeat about the company’s scripted production activities. “It is looking much more positive than it was a month ago.”

With Italy gradually lifting some lockdown restrictions, local film and TV producers are busy drafting safety protocols to start shooting again, with June targeted as the start of the industry’s road map to recovery.

With close to 30,000 deaths, Italy has the second deadliest coronavirus outbreak in Europe, behind the U.K., but is now flattening the curve. On May 4, it entered its so-called “phase two” with some workplaces reopening.

Italy was not yet on lockdown, but De Angelis and Netflix Director of International Originals Felipe Tewes agreed that going ahead would have been complicated “and posed a serious health threat to the cast and crew,” whom, De Angelis points out, Netflix is now trying to support economically during the interlude until shooting restarts.

“Zero” actors, several of whom are non-professionals, are meanwhile being coached remotely, as scripts get polished in hopes that shooting can take place sometime this summer.

Netflix will relocate its Italian team from Amsterdam to Rome within the next year, according to reports in Italian newspaper Il Messaggero today (January 24).

The move is understood to have been prompted by a tax evasion investigation into Netflix by Gaetano Ruta, the vice-district attorney of Milan in 2019. Italian law requires the streaming compamny, and any other Ott operating in the territory, to have an Italian headquarters.
