Bryan Cranston's Your Honor: Fourth Remake Deal Penned This Year
Image
A divisive crime drama series that starred Bryan Cranston has penned a fourth remake deal so far this year. A highly successful television genre, crime dramas are becoming even more popular. On top of long-lasting shows like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, some newer crime dramas include Mobland, Tulsa King, and On Call.

Since Cranston will forever be known for headlining Breaking Bad's cast of characters, some of the actor's other shows and movies don't get as much attention. For example, some may not know that his recent movie, Everything's Going to Be Great, got great reviews. Despite Cranston's obvious talents, some of his projects haven't been as well-received.

“There has to be a good reason”: Bryan Cranston Said Goodbye to Breaking Bad but Still Has Certain Conditions to Return to His Other Fan-Favorite Series
Image
Bryan Cranston has always had a soft spot for shunned and damaged characters. Whether it be the terminally ill and morally evil Walter White or the despairing and ethically bankrupt Michael Desiato, Cranston’s roles speak volumes even without the actor having to utter a single word.

Your Honor [Credit: Showtime]

Such a powerful performance, of course, is not simply the credit of an actor but the script, dialogue, character arc, and plot building as well. While Breaking Bad presented a perfect score on each of those traits of the story, one other series also managed to snag Cranston’s attention for its attention to detail – Your Honor.

Showtime Hit ‘Your Honor’ Gets Spanish Remake from Atresmedia, ‘Hierro’ Producer Portocabo (Exclusive)
Image
Spanish media giant Atresmedia is joining forces with Portocabo, the production outfit behind Movistar Plus hit series “Hierro,” for a remake of Showtime drama “Your Honor,” starring Bryan Cranston.

The Spanish redo is currently at the script stage and initiating casting.

With an undisclosed number of episodes, the project production is scheduled to kick off this year.

The TV series release date is still unknown. But it would be logical for it to launch on platform Atresplayer Premium before airing on Atresmedia’s free-to-air channel Antena 3 primetime, a windowing strategy usually followed by the group with its new fiction releases since Atresplayer Premium bowed in 2019.

“Your Honor” is based on the Israeli TV drama “Kvodo,” created by Ron Ninio and Shlomo Mashiach, and aired first on Israel’s paybox Yes TV.

The U.S. version was developed by Peter Moffat for Showtime and stars “Breaking Bad’s” Bryan Cranston,...

Women Battle Against Male Domination in Drama Shows
Image
In her entertaining Mipcom fresh content presentation on Tuesday, Virginia Mouseler, CEO and co-founder of the Geneva-based TV think tank The Wit, put the focus on hit new shows powered by a cast of angry women.

“‘The Squid Game’ inspired our theme for today, which is fiction against domination,” she said. “In our selection, it will be mostly women against the domination of men. The domination of the system.”

Mouseler’s selection of fresh TV began with the BBC’s crime thriller “Vigil,” which revolves around a lesbian cop sent to investigate a murder on a submarine. “The deeper you go, the darker it gets,” runs the tag line.

“What I thought was interesting was the evolution of the female cop character,” she said. “She’s a lesbian and she’s sent to a men’s world and has to deal with her own vulnerability.”

The series is written by...

“Your Honor” has been renewed for Season 2 at Showtime, Variety has learned.

Originally set up as a limited series, Season 2 will see Bryan Cranston return as respected New Orleans judge Michael Desiato. In Season 1, Desiato’s son is involved in a hit-and-run that leads to a high-stakes game of lies, deceit and impossible choices. Peter Moffat will also return as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Season 2, which will consist of 10 episodes, will begin filming next year for a 2022 debut.

“We were blown away by ‘Your Honor’ … by the power of Peter’s storytelling, by the depth of Bryan’s performance, and by the overwhelming reaction from our subscribers who watched in record numbers,” said Gary Levine, co-president of entertainment for Showtime. “Imagine our delight when we learned that Peter believed he had more story to tell and Bryan felt he had more depths to plumb. It Starts On The Page: Read The Script For “Part One” Of ‘Your Honor’ Penned By Peter Moffat
Image
In December, Showtime debuted Your Honor, a harrowing crime drama starring Bryan Cranston in a role that brought the actor his eighth Golden Globe nomination.

The 10-part series, executive produced by The Good Fight’s Robert and Michelle King and The Night Of’s Peter Moffat, centers on Michael Desiato (Cranston), a prominent New Orleans judge whose son Adam (Hunter Doohan) accidently kills another teenager in a hit-and-run collision.

When Desiato finds out what has happened, he immediately urges his son to turn himself into the police. He changes his mind, however, when he learns the victim of the hit-and-run was the son of local mob moss, Jimmy Baxter (Michael Stuhlbarg). The revelation leads him to dispose of evidence incriminating Adam. Naturally, the judge’s actions have tragic consequences.

Your Honor’s first episode sets the stage for violent conflict between Desiato, Adam and the Baxter family. Edward Berger directed...

Volker Bertelmann (‘Your Honor’ composer) on eliciting the uncomfortable feelings of dread and tension with music [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
Showtime’s legal thriller “Your Honor” opens with intense extended sequence that culminates in a horrifying car crash. It is not only one of the most visually arresting sequences on any series this season, but it was also aurally confronting, due in large part to Oscar-nominated composer Volker Bertelmann‘s hauntingly melancholy score.

For Bertelmann (otherwise known as Hauschka), “it was not ‘thriller’ music all the way through,” he explains. His priority was for the music to focus on the characters’ “inner tension,” which he says inspired many of the tracks he wrote for the show that endeavor to elicit feelings of dread and tension with the audience. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

TV Ratings: Showtime’s ‘Your Honor’ Marks Biggest Debut Season in Network’s History (Exclusive)
Image
“Your Honor,” Showtime’s latest legal crime thriller (with a twinge of horror) starring Bryan Cranston and executive produced by showrunner Peter Moffat, concluded this past Sunday with record-breaking highs for the ViacomCBS-owned television network. The 10-episode miniseries is on track to be the biggest debut season in Showtime Networks’ history, Variety confirmed in an exclusive interview with Kim Lemon, executive vice president of research, program planning & scheduling.

The show’s tragic Shakespearian conclusion, which aired on Feb. 14, has so far been seen by about 1.7 million viewers across platforms, a substantial increase of 29% compared to its penultimate episode (1.35 million viewers), which aired on Super Bowl Sunday. For Showtime, this marked the most-watched total night since the eighth-season wrap-up and series finale of “Homeland” last April.

“It was the best Sunday night of the season,” Lemon said. Per Lemon, the audience (broadly viewers ages 35+) for “Your Honor” has surged since its debut on Dec.

Bryan Cranston: As actors, our roots are rather shallow
Image
Hollywood veteran Bryan Cranston feels his popular show, Breaking Bad, has had a deep impact on his life as well as his career, and says his goal now is to do good work and tell stories that resonate with audiences.

"For an actor, our roots are rather shallow. We plant our tree somewhere in the rows for seven years, and then you lift it up and put it somewhere else," Cranston told Ians when asked about his life after the hit show.

"But for that period of time, it gets very intense. It is a very intense relationship. I try not to think of similarities of characters. I try to find the differences between them. The more you work, the harder it is to be able to define distinction between your characters," he added.

Talking about his learnings post the show, the Emmy award winning star said, "All I've learned...

‘Your Honor’ Debut Verdict Finds Bryan Cranston Starrer Guilty Of Breaking Showtime Viewership Records
Image
Bryan Cranston may be best known for Breaking Bad, but now he’s gaining bragging rights too for breaking viewership records with Your Honor.

With the multiple Emmy winner starring as an increasingly compromised Nola judge, the Showtime legal thriller premiered on December 6 to approximately 770,000 viewers across the various platforms of the ViacomCBS premium cabler.

That is the largest audience in Showtime’s history for limited drama series premiere. In fact, the Peter Moffat-showrun Your Honor topped the previous record holder of Night 1 of The Comey Rule by just over 8% in viewers for its initial 10 Pm airing on Sunday.

According to Nielsen, that first episode of the 10-episode run snagged 449,000 sets of eyeballs in contrast to the 415,000 who watched the Bill Ray written and directed political thriller on September 27.

The one-hour Your Honor opener went up to 570,000 viewers when replays are added in. Another 200,000 jumped into the mix on December 6 via streaming and on-demand.

Bryan Cranston (‘Your Honor’): Will another dark role scare up winter awards nominations?
Image
Leaning into dark characters has paid off for Bryan Cranston. After he spent seven seasons on a network sitcom, “Breaking Bad” minted the actor as one of the most decorated of the past two decades with four Emmy Awards, five SAG trophies and a Golden Globe. Cranston returns to TV to plumb the depths of morally gray areas again in the new Showtime miniseries “Your Honor,” which premieres Sunday.

Inspired by the Israeli show “Kvodo,” “Your Honor” finds Cranston’s New Orleans judge Michael Desiato compromising his ethics to save his son Adam (Hunter Doohan) after he’s involved in a hit-and-run that kills the son of a local crime boss (Michael Stuhlbarg). Hailing from writer Peter Moffat, director Edward Berger, and executive producers Michelle King and Robert King, “Your Honor” explores the lengths to which Cranston’s father will stretch his morals and the lengths the system will allow him to do so.

‘Your Honor’ reviews: A ‘never less than watchable’ Bryan Cranston leads an ‘oppressively grim’ miniseries
Image
After a seven-year absence from a series-lead role, Bryan Cranston returns to TV in the new Showtime miniseries “Your Honor,” which begins its 10-episode run on Sunday, Dec. 6. Based on the Israeli series “Kvodo,” “Your Honor” boasts a creative team of writer Peter Moffat — he penned the British series “Criminal Justice” that inspired HBO’s “The Night Of” — director Edward Berger, and executive producers Michelle King and Robert King.

Cranston plays widowed New Orleans judge Michael Desiato, who unexpectedly compromises his ethics to protect his son Adam (Hunter Doohan) after he accidentally kills the son of a local crime family in a hit-and-run. Fearful of the deceased’s parents Jimmy (Michael Stuhlbarg) and Gina’s (Hope Davis) wrath, Michael turns to friends and acquaintances in law enforcement and politics, like Isiah Whitlock Jr.’s Charlie, to help clean up Adam’s mess, inflicting much seen and unseen harm in his wake.

Showtime’s ‘Your Honor’ Throws Bryan Cranston Into a Messy Moral Conflict: TV Review
Image
The opening of “Your Honor” is a full horror movie in and of itself. Over 15 tense and terrible minutes, director Edward Berger traces the growing unease of one chilly New Orleans morning with ominous patience. A teenager (Hunter Doohan) wakes up in bed with his girlfriend (Sofia Black-d’Elia), kisses her goodbye and heads out for the day with his inhaler, some flowers and a photo of his dead mother resting on the passenger seat of his car. Across town, a richer teenager gets on his new motorcycle, hugs his doting parents (Michael Stuhlbarg and Hope Davis) and hits the road. Meanwhile, a determined man jogs through streets and graveyards with equal urgency, barely taking a breath as sweat seeps through his shirt. If it weren’t for the fraught music steadily creeping from the background into the foreground, nothing about any of this would seem particularly noteworthy. But it’s...

‘Your Honor’: Bryan Cranston Is a Judge Who Breaks Bad
Image
The great Bryan Cranston is both an enormous help to the new Showtime miniseries Your Honor, and, through no fault of his own, a pretty big hindrance. Cranston’s talent and fundamental gravitas are essential to generating any emotional investment in this convoluted tale of a New Orleans judge repeatedly breaking the law to cover up his teenage son’s crime. But his mere presence can’t help but to invite unflattering comparisons to another cable drama about an ordinary man who becomes a criminal for the sake of his family (or so he claims,...
