The Cave was shortlisted for the Documentary Feature Oscar, but director Feras Fayyad was denied a visa to the United States to attend events to promote his film.
One of the reasons why Feras Fayyad wanted to make the film was because he felt the need to have documentary evidence of the war crimes inflicted on the Syrian people by their own government.
The film won 2 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Cinematography for a Nonfiction Program and Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking.
After six years working in the underground hospital depicted in the film, Amani Ballour was forcibly displaced from her home in Syria. She currently resides in Turkey.
Premiered at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival.
