This Overlooked Batman Animated Movie Pitted Him Against Jack The Ripper
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Where Marvel Comics has "What If...?", DC Comics has Elseworlds, which takes DC heroes and reimagines them in different time periods, different genres, etc. In Elseworlds, the Justice League can become cowboys, Superman can be raised in the Soviet Union, and Batman can fight Dracula.

Elseworlds goes back to 1989 and kicked off with "Batman: Gotham By Gaslight." Written by Brian Augustyn and drawn by Mike Mignola, "Gotham By Gaslight" throws the Dark Knight back 100 years, revealing what would happen if Bruce Wayne was Batman in the 1880s. Among other things, it turns out, he'd battle Jack the Ripper rather than Jack Napier.

The comic opens with a letter titled "From Hell," which was authored for the book by Robert Bloch and named for the letter the real Jack the Ripper sent to the chairman of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee. This...

Forget The Dark Knight, This Is Darkest Batman Movie Ever Made
Image
Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is a cesspool of villainy, misogyny, violence, and corruption. Its a brilliantly bloody film that is set in the late 19th century, in a Victorian-style Gotham, following Batmans (Bruce Greenwood) investigation of Jack the Rippers murders. Gotham by Gaslight successfully adapts the Batman universe into its grim Victorian universe, using an iconic real-world villain to bring out the best in Batman. The commentary on misogyny, as well as the great adaptation, effectively brings you into this dark reality where you believe we are both watching Batman and some Charles Dickens tale. To be clear, there are going to be massive spoilers in the final section of this article, so if you don't want to know the reveal of who Jack the Ripper really is, watch the film and come back to read just how perfect of a foil he is for Batman.

"The Bat-Zeppelin": Batman's New Vehicle Showcases Just How Obscenely Rich Bruce Wayne Actually Is
Image
WAarning: Spoilers for Batman: Gotham by Gaslight - The Kryptonian Age #5!Batman may have just taken his coolest mode of transport to date on its maiden voyage: The Bat-zeppelin. Beyond its undeniable aesthetic appeal, this mode of transport speaks volumes about just how immensely wealthy the Gotham by Gaslight Batman is. It also injects some subtle humor into the story, highlighting Bruce Wayne's flair for theatrics and the ridiculousness of his "secret" identity.

In Batman: Gotham by GaslightThe Kryptonian Age #5, Andy Diggle, Leandro Fernndez, and Matt Hollingsworth debut the Dark Knight's Bat-Zeppelin. While fans know that Brian Augustyns original Gotham by Gaslight story was set in 1889, this Zeppelin introduction situates The Kryptonian Age in the early 1900saligning with the first flight of a Zeppelin in 1900.

This timeline assumes historical accuracy applies to the narrative, though, as liberties are sometimes taken in alternate DC timelines. Regardless, its exciting to...

Superman's New Civilian Identity Justifies Every Criticism Fans Have of Clark Kent
Image
Warning: Contains Potential Spoilers for Batman: Gotham By Gaslight - The Kryptonian Age #5!A long-standing fan criticism is the sheer absurdity that no one, not even his closest acquaintances, can recognize Clark Kent as Superman, despite his flimsy disguise of glasses, a different hairstyle, and a mild-mannered attitude. And with the Man of Steel's newest civilian identity, this criticism becomes even more glaring, making it almost laughable that Clark still tries to maintain a secret identity at all.

Superman officially makes his debut in Andy Diggle, Leandro Fernndez, and Matt Hollingsworths Batman: Gotham by Gaslight - The Kryptonian Age #5. This Elseworlds series, a sequel to the 1989 classic Batman: Gotham by Gaslight by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola, reimagines fan-favorite DC characters in the 19th century.

In this world, Clark Kent remains the Kryptonian hero fans know and love, but instead of a mild-mannered investigative journalist, he's a bumbling yet beloved sheriff.

Green Lantern Gets Most Drastic Redesign to Happen in Any Continuity
Image
Warning: Contains Potential Spoilers for Batman: Gotham By Gaslight - The Kryptonian Age #5!The Green Lantern Corps is renowned for its members hailing from across the universe, creating an exceptionally visually diverse group. However, some of the most unique Emerald Knights go beyond simply being unusual alien species, falling into a subcategory that's hard to define but best described as 'other.' Recently, DC introduced the latest Green Lantern to fit this 'other' category, showcasing the most drastic design change in any continuity.

Its no surprise that DCs latest Green Lantern redesign makes its debut within the publishers Elseworlds imprint, where the rules of comic creativity are even more flexible. This creative freedom is fully realized in Andy Diggle, Leandro Fernndez, and Matt Hollingsworths Batman: Gotham by Gaslight - The Kryptonian Age #5, where they finally reveal the previously teased Green Lantern.

Titans' Cyborg Gets Horrifying New Origin Tying Him into Superman Lore
Image
Warning: Contains Potential Spoilers for Batman: Gotham By Gaslight - The Kryptonian Age #5!

Trigger Warning: Body Horror, Non-Consensual Body Modification

Cyborg receives a horrifying new origin that now officially ties him to Superman lore as the fan-favorite Titan is introduced in the sequel to the classic Elseworlds story Batman: Gotham By Gaslight. Along with this new connection to the Man of Steel, what makes this reimagining of Victor Stone even more intriguing is that it could signal the beginning of his villain era, presenting the character in an entirely unprecedented light.

The contrast with Cyborgs original origin is stark: instead of a grieving father saving his son out of love, this version presents a madman using Victor for his own twisted purposes.

The Batman's HBO Spinoff Proves Matt Reeves' Movie Should've Been Rated R
Image
Quick Links The Penguin Is Not a Typical Comic Book Show The Darkest Batman Movie Should've Been Rated R R-Rated Superhero and Comic Book Movies are the Current Trend

The following contains spoilers for The Penguin, now streaming on Max.

The Penguin might take place in the same world as 2022's The Batman, but it's certainly a different street in Gotham City. Gritty, street-level and reveling in its crime drama nature, the show is not at all a superhero series. Ironically, the extent of its bleakness actually says a lot about the rating for the movie it's a spinoff for.

The Penguin is rated TV-ma, and it more than earns this rating with how brutal it is in just its first episode. This begs the question of why The Batman wasn't rated R instead of PG-13. Not only would this have fit the vibe that director Matt Reeves was setting out to create,...

10 Greatest Batman Graphic Novels, Ranked
Image
Since the 1960s, Batman has dominated the comic book industry for DC Comics, starring in multiple titles at any given time as readers enjoy his case files and adventures. Since the industry introduced the idea of prestige-format graphic novels, the hero has topped those too, with many of the company's best-selling comics being Dark Knight-related. Even today, few comics sell as fast as an all-star Batman graphic novel.

Batman has had some of his best stories told in the graphic novel format, with these comics often appealing to mainstream audiences more than standard ongoing floppies. From gritty detective stories to supernatural horror and everything in between, one of the best ways to reel in new readers is to deliver an accessible solo adventure. Having been written and illustrated by genuine comic book legends, these graphic novels represent the best of a good Dark Knight story.

While Wonder Woman is the Princess of Themyscira, she is rarely seen working with other Amazons outside of the Wonder-Family, and even those team-ups are infrequent.
