A Reddit short story is making the jump to the big screen. Sydney Sweeney is attached to star in I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl, an upcoming movie based on a Reddit short story by Joe Cote.
Per Deadline, Sweeney will also produce I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl through her Fifty-Fifty Films. The movie is set up at Warner Bros., with Eric Roth set to adapt Cote's Reddit short story. Roth is best known for scripting Forrest Gump (1994), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), and Denis Villeneuve's 2021 movie Dune. He also provided additional literary material for the 2024 sequel Dune: Part Two. The short story centers around a drifter who "impersonates a missing girl to rob the girl’s family — only to realize she’s made a terrible mistake."
Sweeney is currently one of Hollywood's most in-demand actors, with several projects in various stages of development.

One Battle After Another will officially slug it out with the fall’s top awards contenders. On Thursday, Warner Bros. confirmed Paul Thomas Anderson’s new movie with Leonardo DiCaprio, initially dated somewhat perplexingly for Aug. 8, will arrive in theaters on Sept. 26 — a release date that all but assures Anderson’s latest of launching at one of the significant fall festivals in Venice, Telluride, or Toronto.
Still, regardless of its calendar placement, One Battle After Another was always considered one of the year’s top potential Oscar films, sight unseen. Anderson’s movies have racked up several nominations over the last two decades, as have DiCaprio’s many acclaimed features. It’s always possible that One Battle After Another is the exception, not the rule — especially because Anderson’s last dalliance with the work of Thomas Pynchon, Inherent Vice (more on that below), didn’t connect with the Academy significantly.

Paul Thomas Anderson and Leonardo DiCaprio are ready to go to war.
On Thursday, Warner Bros. released the first teaser trailer for One Battle After Another, the acclaimed filmmaker and star's first-ever collaboration. According to the studio, the full trailer will arrive next week.
Little is officially known about One Battle After Another – so much so that its title wasn’t revealed until Wednesday night when it was reported the studio had shifted the project's release date from August to the fall (more on that below). However, online scuttlebutt suggests the project, Anderson’s most expensive ever, is at least inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland. That novel — set in 1984 but with flashbacks to the 1960s to contextualize the cultural clash in America during those decades — focuses on a former hippie named Zoyd Wheeler and his 14-year-old daughter as they attempt to stay ahead of a villainous federal official. Leonardo DiCaprio is one of Hollywood's most prominent icons, emerging from a child star to a heartthrob, and evolving into a gifted and talented actor who still commands box-office success. Following global superstardom in James Cameron's Titanic, he reinvented himself as a versatile and interesting leading man, and so far, DiCaprio has made six feature films with legendary director Martin Scorsese. Awards success followed, with DiCaprio winning numerous accolades throughout his acting career, including three Golden Globes from seventeen nominations, and a BAFTA Award.
However, despite several prominent Oscar snubs for DiCaprio, he has enjoyed success at the Academy Awards, where he has enjoyed six acting nominations; Best Supporting Actor for What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, and Best Actor for Blood Diamond, The Aviator, The Wolf of Wall Street, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and The Revenant, finally winning for The Revenant in 2016. On Mar. 12, 2025, it was announced that Stranger Things star Sadie Sink had joined the cast of the highly anticipated Spider-Man 4. This news was shocking because Sink was previously rumored to be Marvel Studios' top choice to play Jean Grey in the McU's upcoming X-Men reboot. It isn't unheard of for an actor to be considered for one role only to end up with another, and there certainly is precedent for it between X-Men and Spider-Man properties, like in 2010 when Michael Fassbender was being eyed to play both Magneto in X-Men: First Class and Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man, with him accepting the former.
Yet the fact that the news of Sink's casting for Spider-Man 4 did not mention a character and Sink's previous status as the top contender to play Jean Grey might suggest big plans for the upcoming Spider-Man movie. While there are...

The first images from Mortal Kombat 2, debuted by EW, reveal “The Boys” star Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, a fan-favorite character from the video game franchise.
The photos also show Adeline Rudolph (“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) as Kitana, Hiroyuki Sanada returning as Scorpion, and bodybuilder Martyn Ford (“The Sandman”) as antagonist Shao Kahn.
“You finally get to see Johnny Cage,” Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon tells EW. “His integration into the Mortal Kombat story and universe is a big part of what this movie explores. He’s a washed-up Hollywood guy thrown into this magical, ultra-violent thing.
“Karl, his depiction of Johnny Cage is different than our games in some ways. He’s adding his own flare to it, but I think it’ll feel fresh. There’s like a novelty factor in there.”

These days, it seems like all anyone can talk about in Hollywood are "nepo babies." Originating in the early 2020s, "nepo baby" describes individuals whose success can be attributed to a parent or relative's previous success in the same industry due to nepotism. Plenty of celebrities have achieved accolades without fans knowing about their famously talented families. Some of the most iconic A-listers in film and TV owe their successes to extreme privilege, such as people like Ben Stiller, or Zoë Kravitz.
Most of the time, nepo babies are forced to wear their privilege on their sleeves just by virtue of their names, as Allison Williams (daughter of former NBC anchor Brian Williams) told Wired, "It doesn't feel like a loss to admit it ... If you trust your own skill, I think it becomes very simple to acknowledge." Others, like Jamie Lee Curtis, have spoken out against the ridicule towards nepotism babies in pop culture.

There's no one in our modern film landscape like Sydney Sweeney. In a culture where looks tend to dominate your level of success, Sweeney has devoured stereotypes -- because let's face it, she's stunning -- and ultimately has made a name for herself with the quality of her work both on and offscreen. Though she did her first TV and film stints way back in 2009, her career didn't truly start to pick up until nearly a decade later in 2018. Since then, she has completely taken the industry by storm as a performer and, even more recently, as a dedicated producer.
Sweeney doesn't have a ton of noteworthy credits to her name at this point in her career, but there's no denying she's already done some extremely memorable top-notch work, and there's even more in the pipeline with her upcoming turn as boxer Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic. From dramas to rom-coms,...

Earlier this month, a rumour surfaced suggesting that Mikey Madison, fresh off her Oscar win for Anora, is being eyed for a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Madison was best known for supporting turns in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Scream before the actor's breakthrough performance in Anora earned her several accolades, including the aforementioned Academy Award.
Today, gossip website Deuxmoi claims that Marvel Studios wants Madison for the upcoming X-Men reboot. They don't expect her to say yes but who the 25-year-old could play is undeniably intriguing.
Jean Grey, perhaps? Characters like Rogue, Mystique, and Emma Frost would also be a great fit.
Rumours continue to swirl about the X-Men cast. Sadie Sink was the reported frontrunner to play Jean, though her Spider-Man 4 casting has seemingly debunked the notion. Jack Champion and Harris Dickinson, meanwhile, have been eyed for Cyclops.

“I should have been dead at the end of that!”
Those were comedian Marc Maron’s first words following the premiere of the feature documentary about him, “Are We Good?,” at the SXSW Film & TV Festival on Tuesday. The film, directed by Steven Feinartz, covers the full breadth of Maron’s career, from his start in the 1980s as a cocaine-fueled acolyte of stand-up Sam Kinison through the rapid success of his comedy podcast “Wtf.”
“I thought, it’s amazing this guy is still alive,” Maron joked as he took to the stage of the Zach Theater in Austin following the premiere. “Because usually that’s a movie about a guy that died already.”
Death was understandably on Maron’s mind: The majority of “Are We Good?” focuses on how he’s processed his grief after his girlfriend, filmmaker Lynn Shelton, died suddenly of an undiagnosed blood disease in May 2020. Picking up a year later,...

Hollywood is a marketing game, which means that public images of actors and other creatives are paramount. Morality clauses are an integral part of any contract that is signed between production companies and actors, giving the company (and the industry) the right to remove the actor and disengage with them.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is always looking to recruit fresh new talent to join its sprawling superhero universe. Fresh off her Academy Award win for Anora, Mikey Madison seems like the exact kind of actress that Marvel would be looking to hire for some of its upcoming projects. Moreover, Madison may be searching for her next big role after his Oscar win, perhaps joining a major franchise like the MCU.
Having appeared in several major films including Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Scream (2022), Mikey Madison has proven herself a versatile actress with enough skill to tackle even the most difficult roles. As such, there is a wide variety of characters who would benefit greatly from Madison's portrayal. From conniving supervillains to major superheroes and even a few mutants, these are just a few of the Marvel characters that Mikey Madison could play in the MCU.

True crime documentaries and docuseries continue to thrive, especially on Netflix. While the subjects and topics at hand may be different, almost all of these docs share a familiar formula: there will be talking head interviews cut in between both archival news footage and stylish dramatic recreations of events. More often than not, these recreations also follow a familiar formula: the faces of the actors portraying real figures are usually obscured, and their movements often happen in slow motion for extra effect.
If you've ever wondered why so much true crime material sticks to this familiar approach, the answer can be traced back to Errol Morris' groundbreaking 1988 documentary "The Thin Blue Line." Morris' film followed the story of Randall Dale Adams, a man convicted of murdering a Dallas police officer. Morris' film made it clear that Adams was innocent of the crime, and the documentary was so effective it actually...

For the past few months, there have been reports suggesting their rekindled romance. After parting ways with each other, Garner has been in a relationship with John Miller, and the Batman actor got married to his old love Jennifer Lopez. Mikey Madison In Anora (Photo Credit – Instagram)
The 2025 Academy Awards concluded with a flourish, etching legacies aplenty, yet none rang out as resoundingly as the glistening indie romantic comedy-drama Anora, which commandeered five statuettes — Best Picture to Best Director, the night’s most vaunted haul.
Sean Baker, Anora’s multihyphenate helmsman, made history with four individual wins, a cataclysmic feat to surmount, but the spotlight also enunciated Mikey Madison taking home the Academy Award for Best Actress at 25. Madison’s outing as the salacious stripper Anora beguiled audiences, but did you know the actress first sauntered onto the big screen wielding a knife in a frenzied bid to attack Brad Pitt’s own Oscar-winning portrayal of Cliff Booth?

Sean Baker’s Best Picture Oscar winner Anora will be available to stream on Hulu starting March 17. The streamer’s official Instagram account posted the news.
The film took home the most trophies last night from the 97th ceremony at the Dolby Theater, with Mike Madison winning Best Actress for her titular role and Baker winning three other Oscars — for Best Director, Best Film Editing and Best Original Screenplay. Baker tied Walt Disney’s previous record for the most Oscars won by one person in a single night.
Anora distributor Neon has a deal with the streamer, which also has Jessie Eisenberg’s Kieran Culkin-starrer A Real Pain, for which Culkin won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

“Anora’s” Sean Baker urged the Hollywood community to invest in theatrical releases and support movie theaters, especially those that are independently run, during a passionate speech following his Best Director Oscar win at the 97th annual Academy Awards on Sunday.
Baker opened his acceptance speech by thanking Quentin Tarantino, who presented him with the Best Director statuette, for casting Mikey Madison in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” He credited her role in that film to her casting in “Anora,” which was made for $6 million.
Baker, who has exclusively made indie films throughout his career, called on the industry to put support behind the communal experience of going to the theaters.
“We’re all here tonight and watching this broadcast because we love movies. Where did we fall in love with the movies? At the movie theater watching a film,” he said. “Watching a film in a theater with an audience is an experience.

25-year old Mikey Madison is now an Oscar winner, taking home Best Actress for her lead role in "Anora" (but her character prefers "Ani"). Madison's Anora is a mid-20s sex worker and a second-generation Russian immigrant who stumbles into a relationship with an oligarch's son, Vanya (Mark Eydelshteyn). Her Cinderella story turns into a screwball comedy, and then leaves her right back where she started when Vanya's disapproving parents learn of the elopement.
We at /Film are big fans of "Anora," and have proudly called it the best movie of 2024. Madison's performance is a big part of why we love it so much, and her Oscar win will doubtlessly propel her career even higher. "Anora" unquestionably proves she has the screen presence and talent to keep reaching even higher heights.

“Anora” director Sean Baker has become the first person to win four Oscars in the same year for the same film.
During Sunday’s ceremony, Baker won Oscars for original screenplay, film editing, directing and best picture. With those, Baker ties another famous filmmaker: Walt Disney. But while Disney won four Oscars in the same night in 1953, it was for four different films. Disney was also nominated that year for “Ben and Me” and “Rugged Bear.”
When Baker accepted the award for best director, he thanked the Academy for recognizing an independent film in “Anora.” “We’re all here tonight and watching this broadcast because we love movies. Where did we fall in love with the movies? At the movie theater,” Baker said. He also took the opportunity to shoutout Quentin Tarantino, the category presenter, for casting Mikey Madison in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which led Baker to cast her in “Anora.

Mikey Madison, the 25-year-old actress who is at the center of “Anora,” has won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She beat out projected favorite Demi Moore, who stars in “The Substance,” as well as possible spoiler Fernanda Torres for “I’m Still Here.” By this point on Oscar night, “Anora” had already won Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing.
Madison, accepting the award from presenter Emma Stone said, “I grew up in Los Angeles, but Hollywood always felt so far away from me.” She thanked all her collaborators, in front of and behind the camera, as well as Brighton Beach “for lending us your beautiful backdrop and incredible community.”
“I want to recognize the sex worker community. I will continue to support and be an ally. All the incredible people, the women I’ve had the privilege of meeting… have been among the highlights of this entire incredible experience.

As the opening Take That needle drop in “Anora” says, this could be the greatest day for Sean Baker. The filmmaker accepted the Oscar for best director at Sunday’s ceremony, taking home the prize for helming the wild indie success. The award was presented to Baker by Quentin Tarantino.
Accepting the award, his third during the evening, Baker made a “battle cry” for movie theaters, telling filmmakers to “keep making films for the big screen. I know I will.”
“We’re all here tonight and watching this broadcast because we love movies. Where did we fall in love with the movies? At the movie theater,” Baker said. “Watching a film in the theater with an audience is an experience. We can laugh together, cry together, and, in a time in which the world can feel very divided, this is more important than ever. It’s a communal experience you don’t get at home.

For decades, Brad Pitt has been a Hollywood legend whose lineup of dramatic, romantic, comedic, and unique characters has become iconic and memorable. His early career films allowed him to be more quiet and pensive in his performances, showcasing his acting chops from the start.
Usually, Brad Pitt is in films with a defined genre, from heist capers and epic dramas to romances and action. Yet one particular film was an incredible and unlikely blend of genres that Hollywood hadn't seen yet. Although the silver screen has had its incredible plethora of Westerns and World War films, seeing them in one film is a hard thing to pin down due to the period and culture of cowboys being ships passing in the night.

And while these asides may allude to mainstream movies, his creative reinterpretations of other films' ideas often come with a wink and a nod to film geeks, requiring citations for those casual movie-watchers.
To call him a cinephile is an understatement. But in the eyes of one of the medium's greatest creators, Tarantino is "detestable." His harshest critic wasn’t even around to see his first film. Orson Welles predicted, or rather warned against, Tarantino’s style of movie-making. Near the end of his life, Welles observed that younger directors were "marinated" in movies to their detriment. He accurately anticipated the ascent of pop-culture-quoting meta-movies that rely on having an audience that has consumed thousands of films.

Most bounty hunters stop chasing criminals when they die, but “The Bondsman” is built different.
Vanity Fair unveiled the first look at Kevin Bacon and more from Prime Video’s action-horror-thriller series, premiering April 3.
Bacon stars as Hub Halloran, a bounty hunter who gets a second chance at life by agreeing to track down demons who’ve escaped from Hell.
“It is very violent and has a lot of blood and scares, but it also has some tongue-in-cheek aspects,” Bacon told Vanity Fair. “It’s oftentimes funny, and it also has a lot of heart.”
Jennifer Nettles (“The Righteous Gemstones”), Beth Grant (Donnie Darko), Jolene Purdy (“Under the Dome”), Damon Herriman (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and Maxwell Jenkins (“Lost in Space”) also star.
Bacon and Nettles, each accomplished musicians in their own right, wrote several songs for the show.
The series was created by Grainger David, with Erik Oleson serving as showrunner.
