A Reddit short story is making the jump to the big screen. Sydney Sweeney is attached to star in I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl, an upcoming movie based on a Reddit short story by Joe Cote.

Per Deadline, Sweeney will also produce I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl through her Fifty-Fifty Films. The movie is set up at Warner Bros., with Eric Roth set to adapt Cote's Reddit short story. Roth is best known for scripting Forrest Gump (1994), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), and Denis Villeneuve's 2021 movie Dune. He also provided additional literary material for the 2024 sequel Dune: Part Two. The short story centers around a drifter who "impersonates a missing girl to rob the girl’s family — only to realize she’s made a terrible mistake."

Sweeney is currently one of Hollywood's most in-demand actors, with several projects in various stages of development.

One Battle After Another will officially slug it out with the fall’s top awards contenders. On Thursday, Warner Bros. confirmed Paul Thomas Anderson’s new movie with Leonardo DiCaprio, initially dated somewhat perplexingly for Aug. 8, will arrive in theaters on Sept. 26 — a release date that all but assures Anderson’s latest of launching at one of the significant fall festivals in Venice, Telluride, or Toronto.

Still, regardless of its calendar placement, One Battle After Another was always considered one of the year’s top potential Oscar films, sight unseen. Anderson’s movies have racked up several nominations over the last two decades, as have DiCaprio’s many acclaimed features. It’s always possible that One Battle After Another is the exception, not the rule — especially because Anderson’s last dalliance with the work of Thomas Pynchon, Inherent Vice (more on that below), didn’t connect with the Academy significantly.

Earlier this month, a rumour surfaced suggesting that Mikey Madison, fresh off her Oscar win for Anora, is being eyed for a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Boys from Brazil is a thriller novel by Ira Levin, published in 1976. It tells the story of Yakov Liebermann, a Nazi hunter who uncovers a shocking plan. Dr. Josef Mengele, a Nazi war criminal, has created clones of Adolf Hitler and placed them with families to recreate Hitler’s childhood. Liebermann must stop the plan before history repeats itself.

In 1978, The Boys from Brazil was made into a movie. It was directed by Franklin J. Schaffner and written by Ira Levin and Heywood Gould. The film starred Gregory Peck, Laurence Olivier, and James Mason. It was popular and got three Academy Award nominations.

Sean Baker’s Best Picture Oscar winner Anora will be available to stream on Hulu starting March 17. The streamer’s official Instagram account posted the news.

The film took home the most trophies last night from the 97th ceremony at the Dolby Theater, with Mike Madison winning Best Actress for her titular role and Baker winning three other Oscars — for Best Director, Best Film Editing and Best Original Screenplay. Baker tied Walt Disney’s previous record for the most Oscars won by one person in a single night.

Anora distributor Neon has a deal with the streamer, which also has Jessie Eisenberg’s Kieran Culkin-starrer A Real Pain, for which Culkin won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

“Anora’s” Sean Baker urged the Hollywood community to invest in theatrical releases and support movie theaters, especially those that are independently run, during a passionate speech following his Best Director Oscar win at the 97th annual Academy Awards on Sunday.

Baker opened his acceptance speech by thanking Quentin Tarantino, who presented him with the Best Director statuette, for casting Mikey Madison in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” He credited her role in that film to her casting in “Anora,” which was made for $6 million.

Baker, who has exclusively made indie films throughout his career, called on the industry to put support behind the communal experience of going to the theaters.

“We’re all here tonight and watching this broadcast because we love movies. Where did we fall in love with the movies? At the movie theater watching a film,” he said. “Watching a film in a theater with an audience is an experience.

Madison's Anora is a mid-20s sex worker and a second-generation Russian immigrant who stumbles into a relationship with an oligarch's son, Vanya (Mark Eydelshteyn). Her Cinderella story turns into a screwball comedy, and then leaves her right back where she started when Vanya's disapproving parents learn of the elopement.

We at /Film are big fans of "Anora," and have proudly called it the best movie of 2024. Madison's performance is a big part of why we love it so much, and her Oscar win will doubtlessly propel her career even higher. "Anora" unquestionably proves she has the screen presence and talent to keep reaching even higher heights.

“Anora” director Sean Baker has become the first person to win four Oscars in the same year for the same film.

During Sunday’s ceremony, Baker won Oscars for original screenplay, film editing, directing and best picture. With those, Baker ties another famous filmmaker: Walt Disney. But while Disney won four Oscars in the same night in 1953, it was for four different films. Disney was also nominated that year for “Ben and Me” and “Rugged Bear.”

When Baker accepted the award for best director, he thanked the Academy for recognizing an independent film in “Anora.” “We’re all here tonight and watching this broadcast because we love movies. Where did we fall in love with the movies? At the movie theater,” Baker said. He also took the opportunity to shoutout Quentin Tarantino, the category presenter, for casting Mikey Madison in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which led Baker to cast her in “Anora.

Mikey Madison, the 25-year-old actress who is at the center of “Anora,” has won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She beat out projected favorite Demi Moore, who stars in “The Substance,” as well as possible spoiler Fernanda Torres for “I’m Still Here.” By this point on Oscar night, “Anora” had already won Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing.

Madison, accepting the award from presenter Emma Stone said, “I grew up in Los Angeles, but Hollywood always felt so far away from me.” She thanked all her collaborators, in front of and behind the camera, as well as Brighton Beach “for lending us your beautiful backdrop and incredible community.”

“I want to recognize the sex worker community. I will continue to support and be an ally. All the incredible people, the women I’ve had the privilege of meeting… have been among the highlights of this entire incredible experience.

As the opening Take That needle drop in “Anora” says, this could be the greatest day for Sean Baker. The filmmaker accepted the Oscar for best director at Sunday’s ceremony, taking home the prize for helming the wild indie success. The award was presented to Baker by Quentin Tarantino.

Accepting the award, his third during the evening, Baker made a “battle cry” for movie theaters, telling filmmakers to “keep making films for the big screen. I know I will.”

“We’re all here tonight and watching this broadcast because we love movies. Where did we fall in love with the movies? At the movie theater,” Baker said. “Watching a film in the theater with an audience is an experience. We can laugh together, cry together, and, in a time in which the world can feel very divided, this is more important than ever. It’s a communal experience you don’t get at home.

The Academy saluted Hollywood — still standing despite the terrible wildfires in January — with a montage featuring some of the most magical moments from movies filmed in L.A., including two from “La La Land,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “Chinatown,” “Straight Outta Compton” and “Mulholland Drive.”

Production on Neagley began earlier this month in Toronto.

Whether an in-joke among movie fans or broad references, director Quentin Tarantino has cemented his reputation over the past 30-plus years by being a walking repository of cinema history. He's arguably more knowledgeable than many film professors. Most bounty hunters stop chasing criminals when they die, but “The Bondsman” is built different.

Vanity Fair unveiled the first look at Kevin Bacon and more from Prime Video’s action-horror-thriller series, premiering April 3.

Bacon stars as Hub Halloran, a bounty hunter who gets a second chance at life by agreeing to track down demons who’ve escaped from Hell.

“It is very violent and has a lot of blood and scares, but it also has some tongue-in-cheek aspects,” Bacon told Vanity Fair. “It’s oftentimes funny, and it also has a lot of heart.”

Jennifer Nettles (“The Righteous Gemstones”), Beth Grant (Donnie Darko), Jolene Purdy (“Under the Dome”), Damon Herriman (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and Maxwell Jenkins (“Lost in Space”) also star.

Bacon and Nettles, each accomplished musicians in their own right, wrote several songs for the show.
