Mild who dunnit

After reading somewhere that there where 8 episodes, I was watching tonight with a sense of thank "God that's done and also, oh I am actually going to miss this." However it turns out that there are more than 8. So far I have really enjoyed it. At first I did think it was a bit weird with the age thing but I think it was made clear in an episode (where they stayed away and harry said he slept on the terrace or wherever, but basically not with her) made me feel like yeah actually this is a rare story of actual love not lust. I think it has been a slow burner that normally I would have given up on by now but it seems to keep drawing me in. It has spent a lot of time on one person that could have done it, However, It may be late in the day but now you start looking at everyone in a different way. So yes I do recommend this as a mild "who done it" . Wouldn't rave about it, but I'm intrigued and am looking forward to finding out the truth. As for the comments on the make-up and ageing, (the first episode I did think it was a bit unrealistic) who cares, after watching it for it's worth, make-up and hair is not something I have been paying attention to.

Good show, bad acting

The story is interesting, that's why I've kept watching it. I think of the whole cast, the only one able to pull a decent enough peformance is Patrick Dempsey, everyone else's acting is uncomfortable to watch. Seriously, you have to actively concentrate on the plot or else the over-the-top acting will distract you. It's strange because I've seen most of the cast in other things here and there and they were fine so I'm guessing the strange over-acting is something that was asked of them? I don't know, it's just weird. The make up is also terrible, so that is quite distracting as well. That being said, if you hang in there, the plot will pull you along. It's a fun little thriller show to watch on a lazy Sunday, just don't expect Oscar worthy performances.

Great show

People who judge a show when 'watching a bit' or after just one episode are pathetic and should not waste their time writing useless and utterly stupid reviews if they can't be bothered to watch the whole thing. In my opinion.

I can't wait too see how it all ends. This show is surely not predictable - you just have to keep watching.

Watch it all before you decide

This is actually a very good who dunnit rather than a story about an affair. A lot of negative reviews were based on the first 2 or 3 episodes. Let me tell you, it gets better and better as it goes on. Not to spoil anything, but there are a lot of twists and turns and you do not know what really happens until the end. Like I said, watch it all and you will enjoy it. It is a ride.

Fantastic! If you haven't read the book, your in for a few more surprises yet!!!

On episode 4 in U.K. and had to buy the book to find out what happens! A real page turner with twists and turns! The tv series really does credit to the book I think! Still look forward to the tv show every week even though I know what happens! Best thing I've watched in ages and the best book too!

Entertaining, but three episodes too long

The first three episodes were great, and overall I liked the rest of the series; however, by the time it reaches the end, there have been so many people accused of the crime that I did find myself not caring anymore. I think maybe three episodes less and four suspects less it would have actually been much stronger.

Great show

Granted, Dempseys make up isnt great, but the show had me sucked in from the get go. The acting is good and Dempsey and his 'prodigy' are believable as their characters. No complaints here!

Interesting and suspenseful series filled with tension, thrills, and lots of twists and turns

Based on the homonymous novel written by Joel Dicker, this series in 10 episodes concerns a writer called Marcus : Ben Schnezer who due to a writing's block pays a visit to his professor and mentor Harry. As Marcus becomes lnvolved into a twisted intrigue when his mentor professor/writer Harry Quebert : Patrick Dempsey is arrested and accused for killing. As a crime has been committed , and the corpse of a young girl has appeared buried on his land after her missing decades ago. The previous student and nowadays writer set out in investigating the events by attempting to prove the innocence of the suspect professor.

Tense, interesting series with intrigue, tension, suspense, exciting scenes and plot twists. This is an enjoyable series, though relies heavily on the lovely relationship between Harry Quebert/Patrick Dempsey and Nola/Kristine Froseth, as well as excessive and overwhelming twists and turns. Stars actor/producer Patrick Dempsey who gives a nice acting as a writer who gets caught in an accusation of murder, while his pupil Ben Schnetzer is fine as the student/writer who tries to prove he didn't commit and discovers his mentor was having an affair with a teenager well played by Kristine Froseth. Others actors appearing are the following ones : Damon Wayans Jr as an obstinate police inspector who befriends Marcus and both of whom carry out a hard investigation to find out the true killer, Kurt Fuller as an old cop who holds dark secrets, Matt Frewer as the stiff-upper-lip reverend father of the murdered and allegedly mistreated girl, Colm Feore as a wealthy owner and his suspect and scarred chauffer Luther Caleb finely interpreted by Joshua Close, and Victoria Clark and Tessa Mossey perform respectively the adult Jenny Quinn and young Jenny of the diner where develops partially the action , along with Viginia Madsen as Jenny's mother , Ron Perlman as chief publisher, Wayne Knight as a journalist, Vlasta Vrana, among others.

It displays a luxurious and glamorous cinematography by Jean Maria Dreujou, shot on various locations in Forestville, Quebec , Montreal, Canada. As well as as adequate and moving musical score by Simon Franglen. This splendid series was well directed by the prestigious director Jean Jacques Annaud in his only Television work, and filmed during the 2017 summer . This notable French filmmaker has made successful pictures, such as : Black Gold, Enemy of the Gates, The Name of the Rose, Seven Years in Tibet, The Bear, The Lover, Quest of Fire and many others. Rating : 7/10. Better than average. The series will appeal to thriller enthusiasts and Patrick Dempsey fans.

Red Herrings R Us

If at any point you begin to think you've seen one too many red herrings, just cut your losses and stop watching this series. It doesn't get any better. The red herrings grow and multiply exponentially as the episodes progresses. By the finale it was simply ridiculous.

I never give a ten rating

I came into this series with quite low expectations, after reading some early reviews, it was the fact that Ben Schnetzer was in it that drew me in. I never give a ten rating usually, but I can't find anything I don't like about this programme. The acting is great, even the minor characters are well cast. I haven't read the book it's based on, so I can't comment on how it translates. However in my opinion, the story is completely absorbing and well written. Special mention for the cinematography, beautiful and so many subtle touches that add to how the ongoing story unfolds. I have recommended this series to all my friends and they have not been disappointed. I can't remember when I have enjoyed a programme as much as this one. PS Ben Schnetzer is brilliant of course and I am not his mother btw!

Many turningpoints! Recommend!!

An exciting series, with many turning points that are impossible to predict!! Exciting, nice and you have to catch everything that is said, otherwise you can miss important information. Recommended for anyone who likes series with turning points and good actors, as well as roles.

I'm I the only one uncomfortable?

I can't be the only one who is disgusted by this grown man lusting after a 15 year old?! I'm trying to keep an open mind, but it's episode 3 and all I can focus on is how the author/filmmakers are trying to justify the relationship between Harry and Nola. This is making it very uncomfortable to watch. It's disturbing in this day and age to find a drama that's main focus is Pedophilia.

Involving but also a bit disappointing.

A few years ago I read the book, on the one hand I thought it a real page-turner, but also a bit shallow and rather poorly written. I had the same feelings about this series. You keep watching because there are so many twists and turns and every episode ends with yet another unexpected cliffhanger. But as to the core of the story, i.e. the fatal love between young and (not so) innocent Nola and much older, handsome Harry Quebert, it impressed me as if that part of the screenplay was written by a teenage girl with some overwrought romantic fantasies: the way these two rather improbable lovers act and talk when they're together is so cloyingly sweet it makes your teeth ache. In fact, the whole story is made up of improbabilities, coincidences, and almost gothic circumstances, like mysterious disfigured men, multiple personality disorders, corrupt and murderous policemen, arson, etcetera, it's frankly a bit too much of everything.

Most of the acting is fine, with Patrick Dempsey as the main character, although in my opinion he didn't get enough room to really shine. Kristine Froseth made Nola more annoying than sweet. My favorite actor was Ben Schnetzer, I didn't know him before, he's very natural and convincing (and looks really awesome!).

All in all: involving but also a bit disappointing.

I love how Dempsey takes his part. He's pretty good at drama. Makeup its pretty bad tho. Hope to see more suspense scenes involving more of Dempsey's skills.

Disappointing ending

This series was intriguing and original... until ep 7.

The series takes a dive around episode 7 and just becomes silly. Apparently defamation laws don't exist in Sommerdale, Maine. The following episodes are just as silly.

I haven't read the book, however the writing in this series is quite sloppy. The narrative is presented well (save for gaping plot holes) but the final four episodes leave the viewer shaking their head in total disbelief at the sheer dumb things the characters say and do (or don't do).

If you're able to suspend your reality, don't expect too much, and don't try to work out what happened (because it's pretty obvious from around halfway through), you might enjoy this.

Kudos to Patrick Dempsey. He played a deeply flawed character very well. Kristine Froseth, who plays Nola, is definitely someone to watch out for in the future.

Good concept no attention to detail

It's a shame the acting isn't great and attention to detail is lacking because the storyline is pretty good. To explain the lack of detail the following stands out. Evidence is handled without gloves, dodgy wigs to make someone look older, dodgy makeup to my someone look older and croakey voices to sound old. As stated it's a good story but the lack of detail and quality drags it down to an average show hence my rating of five out of ten.

Gripping to the end

What a great story! It plays with so many of our instincts and emotions...good and bad. I can't recommend this series enough.
