The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Three Days Of The Condor
Image
"Three Days of the Condor" is one of the most suspenseful crime thrillers that came out of '70s cinema. The New Hollywood movement was in full effect with audiences turning to gritty, low-budget films for thrills outside of the failing studio system. Sydney Pollack was one of the foremost leaders of the cinematic era, and "Three Days of the Condor" was one of the final entries into its canon. The filmmaker's 1970 film "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" earned him his first Academy Award nomination, so "Three Days" was a highly anticipated follow-up.

Robert Redford stars as Joe Turner, a code-breaker for the CIA who shows up to work one morning and finds his entire department has been killed. When he tries to find solace in his superiors, he quickly learns that the agency is in on the job. Joe is left to discover why the CIA wants him and his colleagues dead,...

'A Walk in the Woods' Almost Reunited Robert Redford and Paul Newman
Image
Unlike many stars from the New Hollywood era, Robert Redford didn’t peak in the 1960s and ‘70s. While he’s certainly best associated with films like Three Days of the Condor, Jeremiah Johnson, Downhill Racer, and The Candidate, that doesn’t mean that he hasn’t stayed active in the decades that followed. Many of Redford’s greatest roles have been in recent films such as The Old Man & The Gun and All is Lost, which prove that his star power has remained just as endearing throughout the 21st century. In fact, he surprised us big time with his role in Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Redford did some particularly heartfelt work in the underrated 2015 dramedy A Walk in the Woods, a film that nearly reunited him with his most beloved co-star: Paul Newman.

Spoilers for "Wish" follow.

The brand tends to focus on Maleficent (Eleanor Audley) from 1959's "Sleeping Beauty," Cruella de Vil (Betty Lou Gerson) from 1961's "One Hundred and One Dalmatians," Ursula the Sea Witch (Pat Caroll) from 1989's "The Little Mermaid," the Evil Queen (Lucille La Verne) from 1937's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," Captain Hook (Hans Conreid) from 1953's "Peter Pan," Hades (James Woods) from 1997's "Hercules," and Dr. Facilier (Keith David) from 2009's "The Princess and the Frog."

Occasionally, one might find Gaston (Richard White) from 1991's "Beauty and the Beast" in the mix or Chernabog from 1940's "Fantasia." These characters are all memorable for their scary designs, their misguided lust for power or destruction, their resentment, their hatred of the world,...

‘The Beasts,’ Rodrigo Sorogoyen Opens Up – a Little – from Cannes
Image
From the 100-second tracking shot to building pulse music that opens “The Realm” to the slug-fest finale of “May God Save Us,” Oscar-nominated Rodrigo Sorogoyen (“Mother”) has filmed some of the most exhilarating shots in recent Spanish cinema.

His status as a filmmaker consolidated by a series, Movistar Plus’ “Riot Police,” “The Beasts” (“As Bestas”), which plays in Cannes Premiere, rates as one of, if not the most awaited Spanish movie of 2022.

From a brief synopsis, it might look like a return to one of Sorogoyen’s central obsessions: Violence. But that is most likely a half truth. Based on real-life events, “The Beasts,” written by Sorogoyen and co-scribe Isabel Peña, follows a married couple, Vincent and Olga, (Denis Menochet and Marina Fois) who have settled in a small village in Galicia, in Spain’s verdant North-West. They grow vegetables and rehabilitate abandoned cottages.

Disrupting established village power structures, however,...

Image
José Luis López Linares’ “Goya, Carrière and the Ghost of Buñuel,” a portrait of French film great Jean-Claude Carrière, captured breaking down the paintings and personality of painter Francisco de Goya, has been acquired for international sales by Reservoir Docs.

In its earliest sales, the doc feature has closed the two biggest markets in Europe with reputed distributors, licensing France to Epicentre and Germany and Austria to Weltkino. Syldavia Cinema will distribute in Spain, Version Digital in Italy and Outsider Films in Portugal.

Launched in 2020 by Anais Clanet, Reservoir Docs will bring the documentary feature onto the market at next month’s Cannes Festival.

“Reservoir Docs has always been a key sales agent for theatrical art & culture docs and Jose Luis’ work fits perfectly,” said Clanet. “To me, Goya painted European conflicts in the late 18th and early 19th centuries but he didn’t only chronicle his times: Somehow, he was a visionary,...

Malaga Festival Director Juan Antonio Vigar on Spanish-Language Market Trends, Series, New Talent
Image
Few figures in the Spanish film industry dress as formerly, or as well, as Malaga Intl. Film Festival director Juan Antonio Vigar. But then he takes his job very seriously indeed. While many other Spanish festival directors have more or less maintained the formats of their events, Vigar has innovated constantly since taking over in 2013. The result is a bouquet of industry initiatives which only San Sebastian can equal in Spain, and which channel the key pivots in Spanish-language production at large: The gathering sense of one common production market in Spain and Latin America; the two-way street with drama series production; the primacy of talent.

Variety talked to Vigar in the run-up to its 2020 Spanish Screenings:

The key direction in which you’ve taken Malaga is “apertura,” an opening up, whether in its geographical ambit or types of titles….

Cultural initiatives must be reset from time to time, to allow them to breathe,...

When the Present is the Past: Carina Round Talks the World of Puscifer and Existential Reckoning
Image
As the colossal disaster that is 2020 starts to wind down, frantic members of the public gather in socially distanced huddled masses, lined up to place their vote in the U.S. election as they stand under shadowy fears of doubt and uncertainty. Yet, these final months of this confusing time have a steady pipeline of great new music to help quell those worries and take our minds to a more peaceful plane of existence.

One of these treasures about to hit the market is the new album from the musical collective started by Tool’s Maynard James Keenan; Puscifer. Though originally devised more as a solo project for Keenan with a rotating cast of musicians to help pave the way, in recent years, Puscifer has become more of a trio powerhouse at its core, with Mat Mitchell and Carina Round solidifying the line-up of talented songwriters.

With the release of the new record,...

Got Election On the Brain? Here’s The Best Political Movies and Shows To Escape
Image
Photo: Robert Redford in 'The Candidate'/Warner Bros. Obsessed with staying up to date on this year’s election, but desperate for a break? Don’t worry, there are plenty of political movies and shows with just enough edge to decompress in between panic attacks. This has been one doozy of an election year. From surprise Covid diagnoses to mind-numbing debate performances featuring crazy glue-gripped flies, the 2020 election cycle has been a nonstop trainwreck that is undeniably, and unfortunately, extremely captivating. Every time it appears as though the dust is settling and the race for the White House is steadying, Bam! Trump has contracted coronavirus and Bam! Biden is suddenly selling fly swatters. Has this all really gone down in less than 2 weeks and are all the fly swatters really sold out already? It has been an absolutely tumultuous couple of months and many have fallen down the rabbit hole of political chaos,...

Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s ‘Riot Police’ Brings a Big-Screen Punch to TV Drama
Image
It is fitting in many ways that Movistar Plus’ “Riot Police” (“Antidisturbios”) saw its world premiere in a theater at one of Europe’s biggest film festivals: September’s San Sebastian in Spain.

Feted by the domestic press — “the best Spanish series of the year,” trumpeted newspaper El Mundo — the Movistar Plus original series has closed sales to France and Latin America with “partners of the highest caliber,” “Riot Police” producer Domingo Corral, Movistar head of original programming, said at San Sebastián.

Co-written — with regular writing partner Isabel Peña and Eduardo Villanueva — and directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, “Riot Police” marks just the latest entry in the seemingly unending diaspora of renowned Spanish cineastes into drama series creation. Director of the 2019 Academy Award-nominated short “Madre” and a short-lived TV director, Sorogoyen broke out as a film director with his first solo feature, 2016’s “May God Save Us,” a San Sebastian screenplay winner,...

Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas-Led ‘Official Competition’ Restarts Filming in Spain
Image
Headlined by Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, The Mediapro Studio’s “Official Competition,” one of the year’s highest-profile international Spanish productions lensing in Spain, has resumed shooting.

Compounding the difficulty of going into production for a second time, the film features an international cast including Argentine heavyweight Oscar Martínez, a former San Sebastian, Venice and Argentine Academy best actor award-winner, plus two Argentina-based directors, Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat.

They will be hoping history doesn’t repeat itself this time around. Eight days after production started in March of this year, the Covid-19 pandemic shut down filming when it became unsafe to continue. Ominously, as shooting resumes this week, parts of Spain, led by Madrid, are reintroducing stricter lockdown conditions once again, as the daily number of new cases is rising.

“Official Competition” features Banderas and Martínez as renowned actors of large talent but even bigger egos, set on...

Led by Oscar-Winning Tornasol, Production Services Outfit Cnpc Launches in Navarre (Exclusive)
Image
Five Madrid-based companies, led by leading Spanish production house Tornasol Films, producer of Oscar-winner “The Secret in Their Eyes,” are teaming to launch services consortium Centro Navarro para la Producción Cinematográfica in Navarre, Northern Spain.

Based out of the Sarrio industrial park in Berrioplano, a town near Pamplona, Cnpc will provide production services, develop R&d projects and launch industry training programs in a region of Spain that is consolidating as a film-tv hub bulwarked by tax incentives.

Since 2015, Navarre offers a competitive 35% tax credit for Spanish shoots and co-productions.

“The Cnpc aims to complete the value chain of a film’s production,” said Miguel Iturralde, manager of Cnpc, which officially starts operations in October.

“Navarre is in vogue thanks to its tax incentives, although in order to be eligible for them, production must meet a series of requirements. The main one and the most complicated: Making 40% of production spend in the region,...

Spain’s Navarre Builds as Film-tv Hub
Image
The region of Navarre, in Northern Spain, is fortifying its position as a solidly built hub for the audiovisual industry.

Despite pandemic, film and TV remains growth sectors, showing the early fruits of a building industrial fabric, part of a strategic axis in Navarre’s Plan of Smart Specialization 2030.

Driven by a 40% tax deduction for R&d and tech innovation activities, Navarre started to attract animation and post-production firms in 2015.

Nurtured by a favorable environment, four Navarre-based toon studios have already unveiled the development and production of five new feature films: Apolo Films’ adventure comedy “Dogtanian & The Three Muskehounds,” Dr. Platypus & Wombat’s “Dinogames” and “Hanna y los monstruos,” Demiranda Studios’ stop motion “Ojalá” and The Think Lab’s 3D production “Inspector Sun.”

Also, Navarre has embarked on Emotional Films, maybe its most ambitious R&d project to date. It teams a regional consortium of public and private companies and orgs -taking in Dr.
